1218 पांचवां धर्मयुद्ध एकर से मिस्र के लिए रवाना हुआ। एकर या एक्को इजराइल के उत्तरी जिले का तटीय मैदानी क्षेत्र में स्थित शहर है।

1276 उप्साला कैथेड्रल में मैग्नस लाडुलस को स्वीडन के राजा का ताज पहनाया गया।

1487 किंग हेनरी सातवें के विकल्प के रूप में वर्षीय लैंबर्ट सिमनेल को आयरलैंड के डबलिन स्थित क्राइस्ट चर्च कैथेड्रल में एडवर्ड छइे के नाम से भावी राजा का ताज पहनाया गया।

1543 विश्व प्रसिद्ध खगोलविद, गणितज्ञ, दार्शनिक निकोलस काॅपरनिकस का निधन पोलेंड के फ्रोमबर्क में हुआ। काॅपरनिकस ने यह सिद्धांत प्रतिपादित किया कि पृथ्वी समेत सभी ग्रह सूरज के चक्कर लगाते है और पृथ्वी अपनी धुरी पर भी घूमती है, जिससे विभिन्न मौसम आते-जाते हैं।

1544 विलियम गिल्बर्ट नामक प्रसिद्ध अंग्रेजी चिकित्सक, भौतिक विज्ञानी और प्राकृतिक दार्शनिक का जन्म लंदन में हुआ। उन्होंने प्रचलित अरिस्टोटेलियन दर्शन और विश्वविद्यालय शिक्षण की स्कोलास्टिक पद्धति दोनों को खारिज किया। उन्हें मुख्यतः उनकी पुस्तक डी मैग्नेटे (1600) के लिए याद किया जाता है।

1567 स्वीडन के राजा एरिक और उसके गार्डों ने जेल में बंद पांच स्वीडिश रईसों की हत्या कर दी।

1940 इगोर सिकोरस्की ने पहली सफल एकल-रोटर हेलीकाप्टर उड़ान का प्रदर्शन किया। इगोर इवानोविच सिकोरस्की हेलीकॉप्टर और फिक्स्ड-विंग विमान दोनों में एक रूसी अमेरिकी विमानन मामलों के अग्रणी थे। उन्होंने 1914 में दुनिया के पहले मल्टी-इंजन फिक्स्ड विंग एयरक्राफ्ट, रस्की वाइटाज और पहले एयरलैंडर, इल्या मुरोमेट्स को डिजाइन किया और उड़ाया। 24 मई 1940 को लेनिनग्राद, सोवियत संघ में इओसिफ अलेक्जेंड्रोविच ब्रोडस्की रूसी-अमेरिकी कवि और निबंधकार, नोबेल पुरस्कार विजेता का जन्म हुआ।

1952 चर्चित भारतीय विदेश सचिव रंजन मथाई का जन्म हुआ।

1954 जानी मानी भारतीय महिला पर्वतारोही बचेंद्री पाल का जन्म उत्तरकाशी, उत्तराखंड में हुआ।

1956 बौद्ध धर्म के प्रवर्तक गौतम बुद्ध की 2500 वीं जयंती धूमधाम से मनायी गयी। इसी दिन गजेटियर में दर्ज वाराणसी शहर का आधिकारिक नाम 24 मई 1956 को स्वीकारने की जानकारी सार्वजनिक की गई। इससे पहले इसे काशी, बनारस आदि कहते थे।

1959 साम्राज्य दिवस का नाम बदलकर राष्ट्रमंडल दिवस किया गया। ब्रिटेन के गुलाम रहे भारत सहित कई देश इस संगठन में शामिल हैं।

1982 खूबसूरत, बोल्ड, जानी मानी हिंदी और दक्षिण भारतीय फिल्म तथा टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री तथा माॅडल कांची कौल का जन्म श्रीनगर, जम्मू एवं कश्मीर में हुआ। जाने माने भारतीय फुटबाल खिलाड़ी मोहम्मद रफी का जन्म हुआ।

1993 मेक्सिको में मिगुएल हिडाल्गो वाई कोस्टिला गुआडालाजारा अंतर्राष्ट्रीय हवाई अड्डे पर गोलीबारी में रोमन कैथोलिक कार्डिनल जुआन जेसुस पोसादास ओकाम्पो और पांच अन्य लोगों की हत्या कर दी गई।

1985 बांग्लादेश में आये चक्रवाती तूफान से दस हजार से अधिक लोग मारे गये। इसी दिन बड़े पैमाने पर महिलाओं ने परमाणु हथियारों, युद्ध, हिंसा, मानव और संसाधनों की बर्बादी के खिलाफ बड़ा आयोजन किया शांति और निरस्त्रीकरण के लिए अंतर्राष्ट्रीय महिला दिवस मनाकर। 1980 के दशक में शुरु हुआ यह आंदोलन बढ़ता गया। 1985 में वैश्विक स्तर पर सक्रिय परमाणु हथियारों की कुल संख्या लगभग 62,000 थी। 24 मई को शांति और निरस्त्रीकरण के लिए अंतर्राष्ट्रीय महिला दिवस की स्थापना की गई। 1980 के दशक से, 24 मई दुनिया भर के शांतिवादी और मानवाधिकार समूहों के लिए एक रैली, मार्च, सभा, गोष्ठी आयोजन दिवस बन गया है, जिसमें सरकारों से हथियारों के निर्माण और वितरण को रोकने का आह्वान किया गया है, चाहे वह उनकी अपनी सेनाओं के लिए हो या अपने ही देश के निजी नागरिकों के लिए हो।

1999 भारत के विख्यात कुश्ती प्रशिक्षक (कोच) व पहलवान गुरु हनुमान का निधन हुआ। 1999 में इसी दिन नीदरलैंड के हेग में पूर्व यूगोस्लाविया के लिए अंतर्राष्ट्रीय आपराधिक न्यायाधिकरण ने कोसोवो में किए गए युद्ध अपराधों और मानवता के खिलाफ अपराधों के लिए स्लोबोदान मिलोसेविक और चार अन्य को दोषी ठहराया।

2000 इस्राइल ने दक्षिणी लेबनान से अपना 18 साल पुराना कब्जा खत्म किया और सेना वापस बुलाई। इसी दिन भारतीय हिंदी फिल्मों के प्रसिद्ध गीतकार और शायर मजरूह सुल्तानपुरी का निधन हुआ।

2002 रूस और अमेरिका ने मास्को संधि पर हस्ताक्षर किये।

2003 इस्रायली प्रधानमंत्री एरियल शैरोन ने पश्चिम एशिया शांति योजना स्वीकार की।

2004 उत्तर कोरिया ने मोबाइल फोन पर प्रतिबंध लगाया।

2005 ब्रदर्स डे यानी भाई दिवस की शुरुआत अमेरिका के सी डेनियल रोड्स ने की। नेशनल ब्रदर्स डे यानी राष्ट्रीय भाई दिवस अमेरिका के अलावा ऑस्ट्रेलिया, रूस, जर्मनी और फ्रांस में भी मनाया जाता है। हर साल 24 मई को इसे मनाया जाता है। तब से भारत में भी इसे मनाया जाता है। इसमें भाईचारे की भावना निहित है। महिला पुरुष अपने भाई, बहनों, मित्र, शुभचिंतकों, परिचितों के प्रति अपने प्यार का इजहार करते हैं। इसी दिन एनबी इंकबेयर मंगोलिया के राष्ट्रपति चुने गये।

2008 उत्तर प्रदेश सरकार ने राज्य कर्मचारियों का मंहगाई भत्ता छह प्रतिशत बढ़ाया।

2010 वैज्ञानिकों ने सिलिकन के सात अणुओं के आकार वाला दुनिया का सबसे छोटा ट्रांजिस्टर बनाने में सफलता प्राप्त की। 2010 में इसी दिन हॉलीवुड के मशहूर पटकथा लेखक साइमन मोंजैक का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन प्रख्यात भारतीय बांगला फिल्म अभिनेता तपेन चटर्जी का निधन हुआ।

2013 राफेल कोरेया तीसरी बार इक्वाडोर के राष्ट्रपति निर्वाचित हुए।

2014 ग्रीस और तुर्की के बीच एजियन सागर में 6.4 तीव्रता का भूकंप आया जिसमें 324 से अधिक लोग घायल हुए। इसी दिन 2014 में बेल्जियम के ब्रुसेल्स के यहूदी संग्रहालय में गोलीबारी में तीन लोग मारे गये।

2015 ब्रिटेन से कुछ ही साल पहले आजाद हुए आयरलैंड गणराज्य ने समलैंगिक विवाह को वैध बनाने के लिए मतदान किया और बहुमत के आधार पर समलैंगिक वैध बनाने वाला पहला देश बना।

2019 सूरत (गुजरात राज्य भारत) में आग लगने से 22 छात्रों की मौत हो गई।

2019 ब्रेक्सिट से निपटने के दबाव में ब्रिटिश प्रधान मंत्री थेरेसा मे ने कंजर्वेटिव पार्टी के नेता के रूप में अपने 7 जून से प्रभावी होने वाले इस्तीफे की घोषणा की।
