675 मुथरैयार राजवंश, तमिलनाडु, भारत के राजा पेरुम्बिदुगु मुथरैयार द्वितीय का जन्म हुआ।

1304 14वीं सदी फ्रांसीसी उत्तर मध्यकालीन प्रसिद्ध संगीतज्ञ एवं-कवि जेहान डी लेस्क्यूरेल का निधन हुआ।

1420 ऑस्ट्रिया और सीरिया से यहूदियों को निष्कासित किया गया।

1430 बरगंडियन गुट के सैनिकों द्वारा कॉम्पिएग्ने की घेराबंदी में जोन ऑफ आर्क को पकड़ लिया गया। जोन ऑफ आर्क प्रसिद्ध फ्रांसीसी वीरांगना थीं और मृत्योपरांत संत घोषित की गईं।

1498 इटली के फ्लोरेंस में जिरोलामो सवोनारोला को जला कर मार दिया गया। जिरोलामो सवोनारोला फेरारा से डोमिनिकन तपस्वी, पुनर्जागरण फ्लोरेंस में सक्रिय उपदेशक, लिपिकीय भ्रष्टाचार, निरंकुश शासन और गरीबों के शोषण के आलोचक थे।

1592 वियेना में इटली के विश्व प्रसिद्ध खगोलविद जिओरडनो ब्रूनो को गिरफ्तार कर लिया गया, क्योंकि उन्होंने बताया था कि पृथ्वी सूरज के चारों ओर घूमती है, न कि सूरज पृथ्वी के चारों ओर घूमता है। ब्रूनो की इस मान्यता को धर्म-विरुद्ध हरकत माना गया।

1785 विख्यात अमेरिकी विचारक, राजनेता, आविष्कारक बेंजामिन फ्रेंकलिन ने एक पत्र में लिखा कि उसका आविष्कार द्विभाषी था।

1844 बहाई सम्प्रदाय के धर्मगुरु सैयद अली मुहम्मद शीराजी ने 24 साल की उम्र में ईरान में अवतार होने का दावा किया। देश की सरकार ने उन्हें मौत की सजा दी।

1848 राइट बंधुओं से भी पहले ग्लाइडर बनाकर इंसान को पहली बार उड़ना सिखाने वाले जर्मन एविएटर ओटो लिलिएनथाल का जन्म हुआ।

1863 जनरल जर्मन वर्कर्स एसोसिएशन (जर्मनी की आधुनिक सोशल डेमोक्रेटिक पार्टी का पूर्ववर्ती संगठन) लीपजिग, सैक्सोनी साम्राज्य में स्थापित की गई।

1879 विख्यात रूसी लेखक इवान तुर्गेनेव को ऑक्सफोर्ड विश्वविद्यालय ने नागरिक कानून में डॉक्टरेट की उपाधि दी। वे दुनिया के ऐसे पहले लेखक थे, जिसे यह सम्मान दिया गया था। इसी दिन आयोवा स्टेट यूनिवर्सिटी ने पहली बार अमेरिका में पशु चिकित्सा स्कूल स्थापित किया।

1891 वैक्सजो, स्वीडन में पार फैबियन लेगरकविस्ट का जन्म हुआ जो प्रसिद्ध स्वीडिश लेखक, कविता, नाटक, उपन्यासकार, कथाकार हुए। साहित्य के क्षेत्र में उल्लेखनीय योगदान के लिए लेगरकविस्ट को 1951 में साहित्य का नोबेल पुरस्कार प्राप्त हुआ। लेगरकविस्ट के लेखन के केंद्रीय विषयों में से अच्छाई और बुराई का के प्रश्न थे जिसके लिए उन्होंने बाइबल का भी सहारा लिया। एक नैतिकतावादी के रूप में उन्होंने चर्च के सिद्धांतों का पालन किए बिना ईसाई परंपरा से धार्मिक रूपांकनों और आकृतियों का उपयोग किया।

1901 अमेरिकी सेना ने फिलिपिनो के विद्रोही नेता एमिलियो एग्यूनाल्डो पर विजय प्राप्त की।

1904 वियेना आॅस्ट्रिया में पहली कुश्ती विश्व चैम्पियनशिप का आयोजन किया गया।

1905 सुल्तान अब्दुल हामिद द्वितीय ने सार्वजनिक रूप से साम्राज्य के अरोमानियाई लोगों के लिए उल्लाह मिल्लत के निर्माण की घोषणा की, जिसे एक दिन पहले स्थापित किया गया था। अरोमानियाई राष्ट्रीय दिवस 23 मई को मनाया जाता है। कुछ लोग इसे बजाय 22 मई को भी मनाते हैं। उल्लाह मिल्लत मतलब ओटोमन साम्राज्य के भीतर अलग मान्यता प्राप्त जातीय-धार्मिक और भाषाई समुदाय)। इसकी स्थापना 1905 में ओटोमन साम्राज्य में राष्ट्रवाद के उदय के दौरान ओटोमन अधिकारियों द्वारा अरोमानियाई लोगों के लिए की गई थी।

1923 जाने माने भारतीय इतिहासकार रंजीत गुहा का जन्म हुआ। दक्षिण ऐशिया के प्रमुख इतिहासकारों में से एक गुहा भारत से ब्रिटेन गये, ससेक्स विवि में प्रोफेसर रहे बाद में विएना, आॅस्ट्रिया में बस गये। इसी दिन बेल्जियम ने सेवना एयरलाइंस बनाया।

1926 फ्रांस की सेना ने मोरक्को राइफल्स राजधानी पर कब्जा किया।

1930 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय इतिहासकार तथा पुरातत्त्ववेत्ता राखालदास बंद्योपाध्याय का निधन हुआ।

1937 अमेरिकी रईस, कारोबारी, स्टैंडर्ड ऑयल कंपनी और रॉकफेलर विश्वविद्यालय के संस्थापक जॉन डी. रॉकफेलर का निधन हुआ।

1939 ब्रिटेन की संसद में फिलीस्तीन को 1949 तक स्वतंत्र कराने की योजना प्रस्तुत की गई।

1945 जर्मन तानाशाह एडोल्फ हिटलर के वरिष्ठतम सहयोगी, यहूदियों के नरसंहार अभियान के प्रमुख और पुलिस, फौज सहित खुफिया सेवा के प्रधान हेनरिख हिमलर ने अंतरराष्ट्रीय संयुक्त सेनाओं की हिरासत में आने के बाद साइनाइड जहर खाकर आत्महत्या कर ली। हेनरिख के निर्देशन में लाखों यहूदियों को बर्बर यातानाएं दी गईं और नरसंहार किया गया।

1948 आईएएस अधिकारी विनोद राय का जन्म हुआ, जिन्होंने भारत के 11वें नियंत्रक एवं महालेखा परीक्षक के रूप में कार्य किया। और टूजी स्पेक्ट्रम और कोयला घोटाले जैसे मामले उठाकर यूपीए सरकार को भ्रष्टाचार के लिए बदनाम किया। कांग्रेस सरकार को बदनाम करने और मोदी, भाजपा के पक्ष में माहौल तैयार करने में यह एक बड़े टूल बने।

1949 पेरू के राष्ट्रपति हुए एक चर्चित राजनेता ऐलन गार्सिया का जन्म हुआ।

1951 चीन ने स्वायत्त क्षेत्र के रूप में तिब्बत पर कब्जा कर लिया। तिब्बती धर्मगुरु दलाई लामा और हजारों तिब्बतियों ने भागकर भारत में शरण ली।

1960 इजराइल ने अर्जेंटीना में जर्मनी शासित हिटलर सरकार के यहूदी विरोधी अफसर एडॉल्फ इकमैन को पकड़ने की घोषणा की।

1977 उत्तरी मलूका मूल के चरमपंथियों ने उत्तरी हालैंड के एक प्राथमिक स्कूल और एक ट्रेन में घुसकर बहुत से लोगों को बंधक बना लिया। कमांडो कार्रवाई के जरिए इस संकट को सुलझाने में बीस दिन का समय लगा.

1986 खूबसूरत, बोल्ड जानी मानी मराठी फिल्म तथा टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री तथा माॅडल तेजस्विनी पंडित का जन्म पुणे में हुआ और इसी दिन अमेरिका और पश्चिमी यूरोपीय देशों ने दक्षिण अफ्रीका के खिलाफ भारी प्रतिबंधों के प्रस्ताव पर वीटो किया।

1987 सिडनी, ऑस्ट्रेलिया में ग्रेसी ओटो का जन्म हुआ जो ऑस्ट्रेलिया की जानी मानी, खूबसूरत, बहुप्रतिभावान फिल्म एवं टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री, फिल्म निर्माता और मंच पर्फामर हैं। उन्होंने प्रसिद्ध ब्रिटिश थिएटर इम्प्रेसारियो और फिल्म निर्माता माइकल व्हाइट के बारे में 2013 की डॉक्यूमेंट्री द लास्ट इम्प्रेसारियो के साथ फीचर-लेंथ निर्देशन की शुरुआत की। ग्रेसी ओटो टेलीविजन वाणिज्यिक वीडियो (टीसीवी), शॉर्ट्स, टेलीविजन श्रृंखला, फीचर फिल्में और वृत्तचित्र जैसी विभिन्न स्क्रीन सामग्री का भी निर्देशन किया है।

1988 सुगंधा मिश्रा के नाम से सुपरिचित, खूबसूरत, बोल्ड फिल्म एवं टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री, हास्य कलाकार, रेडियो जाॅकी, टेलीविजन प्रस्तोता, गायिका और माॅडल सुगंधा संतोष मिश्रा का जन्म जालंधर में हुआ।

1990 कछुआ दिवस मनाने की शुरुआत हुई। कछुओं की अलग-अलग प्रजातियों को बचाने के मकसद से एक गैर-लाभकारी संगठन अमेरिकन टॉर्टवायज रेस्क्यु की स्थापना की गई। इस संगठन का मुख्य उद्देश्य विश्वभर के कछुओं का संरक्षण है। कछुआ खरीदना-बेचना दंडनीय अपराध है।

1991 खूबसूरत, बोल्ड, बहुप्रतिभावान, लोकप्रिय कन्नड़ फिल्म अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल संयुक्ता हर्नाड का जन्म का जन्म हुआ।

1994 सऊदी अरब के मक्का में भगदड़ से 270 तीर्थयात्रियों की मौत हुई।

1995 कंप्यूटर प्रोग्रामिंग भाषा जावा को आधिकारिक तौर पर लॉन्च किया गया।

2000 विश्व कछुआ दिवस हर 23 मई को मनाया जाता है। 2000 में अमेरिकी कछुआ बचाव आंदोलन के लोगों ने इसकी शुरुआत की। उन्होंने जनता को कछुओं के महत्व उनकी रक्षा करने में मदद करने के साथ-साथ उन्हें जीवित रहने और पनपने में मदद करने के लिए मानवीय कार्रवाई को प्रोत्साहित करने के लिए वार्षिक उत्सव के रूप में इस दिन की स्थापना की। जैव विविधता जागरूकता दिवसों के प्रभावों पर एक अध्ययन में विश्व कछुआ दिवस को एक उदाहरण के रूप में सूचीबद्ध किया गया है कि वे संरक्षित प्रजातियों पर इंटरनेट खोज ट्रैफिक को कैसे बढ़ाते हैं।

2001 पाकिस्तान ने भारत को मोस्ट फेवरिट नेशन का दर्जा देने से पुनः इंकार किया।

2004 बांग्लादेश में तूफान के कारण मेघना नदी में नाव डूबने से 250 लोग डूब गए। इसी दिन सिंगापुर में जहाज के टैंकर से टकराने के कारण 4000 कारें डूबी।

2008 भारत ने सतह से सतह पर मार करने वाली मिसाइल पृथ्वी-2 का सफलतापूर्वक परीक्षण किया। इसी दिन अंतर्राष्ट्रीय संस्था इंटरनेशनल आर्गेनाइजेशन फॉर स्ट्रेंड्राइजेशन द्वारा डिस्टिलरी को आईएसओ 9001 का प्रमाण पत्र प्रदान किया गया। इसी दिन नेपाल के राजा ज्ञानेन्द्र शाही महल नारायणहिती महल से बेदखल हुए। इसी दिन सोमालिया के समुद्री अपहर्ताओं ने भारतीय कर्मियों वाला जहाज छोड़ा। इसी दिन पाकिस्तानी राष्ट्रपति परवेज मुशर्रफ ने सत्तारुढ़ पाकिस्तान पीपुल्स पार्टी से संबंध समाप्त किये। 2008 में इसी दिन अंतर्राष्ट्रीय न्यायालय (आईसीजे) ने मलेशिया को मिडिल रॉक्स और सिंगापुर को पेड्रा ब्रांका (पुलाउ बटु पुतेह) का पुरस्कार दिया, जिससे दोनों देशों के बीच 29 साल पुराना क्षेत्रीय विवाद समाप्त हो गया।

2010 प्रमुख वामपंथी नेता, चिंतक और नक्सलबाड़ी आंदोलन के प्रणेता कानू सान्याल का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन कान्स फिल्म समारोह में अपिचातपॉन्ग वीरासेताकुल निर्देशित थाईलैंड की फिल्म अंकल बोनमी हू कैन रिकॉल हिज पास्ट लाइव्स को सबसे बड़े पुरस्कार पाम ड’ओर से सम्मानित किया गया। इसी दिन 2010 में सुप्रीम कोर्ट के मुख्य न्यायाधीश के.जी. बालाकृष्णन की अध्यक्षता में भारत के उच्चतम न्यायालय की तीन सदस्यीय खंडपीठ ने बिना विवाह किये महिला और पुरुष का एक साथ रहना अर्थात लिव इन रिलेशन को अपराध की श्रेणी से बाहर किया। प्रसिद्ध तेलुगु चलचित्र गीतकार वेतुरी सुंदरम्मा मूर्ति का निधन हुआ।

2014 रूस और चीन ने सीरिया में युद्ध अपराधों के लिए अंतर्राष्ट्रीय अपराध न्यायालय की स्थापना के लिए संयुक्त राष्ट्र सुरक्षा परिषद में वीटो शक्ति का प्रयोग किया। इसी दिन कैलिफोर्निया विश्वविद्यालय, सांता बारबरा के परिसर एक अपराधी सहित सात लोग मारे गए और अन्य 14 घायल हो गए।

2015 टेक्सास, ओक्लाहोमा और उत्तरी मेक्सिको में बाढ़ और बवंडर से 30 से अधिक लोग मारे गए।

2016 इस्लामिक स्टेट ऑफ इराक एंड सीरिया के सीरिया के तटीय शहरों जबलेह और टार्टस में आठ बम विस्फोट किए गए। एक सौ चैरासी लोग मारे गए और कम से कम 200 लोग घायल हुए। इसी दिन 2016 भारतीय अंतरिक्ष शोध संस्थान इसरो ने आंध्र प्रदेश के श्रीहरिकोटा स्थित स्पेस सेंटर से पूरी तरह से भारत में बने स्पेस शटल किया आरएलवी-टीडी लॉन्च किया।

2017 मरावी में माउते के हमले के बाद फिलीपीन के राष्ट्रपति रोड्रिगो डुटर्टे ने मिंडानाओ में मार्शल लॉ की घोषणा की।

2019 आम चुनावों में भाजपा ने प्रचंड बहुमत से जीत हासिल की। नरेन्द्र मोदी लगातार दूसरी बार भारत के प्रधानमंत्री बने।

2020 कोरोना वायरस के संक्रमितों की संख्या भारत में सवा लाख से अधिक हुई। इस बीमारी से मरने वालों की संख्या 3720 हुई बताई गई।

2021 उत्तरी इटली में मैगीगोर झील के पास एक केबल कार पहाड़ से गिर गई, जिसमें 14 लोगों की मौत हो गई। इसी दिन आयरलैंड की रायनएयर फ्लाइट 4978 को बेलारूसी अधिकारियों ने असंतुष्ट पत्रकार रोमन प्रोतासेविच को हिरासत में लेने के लिए मिंस्क में उतरने के लिए मजबूर किया। राष्ट्रपति अलेक्जेंडर लुकाशेंको के आलोचक प्रोतासेविच को पकड़ने के लिए जहाज को उतरने के लिए मजबूर करने को विमान में बम होने की झूठी सूचना दी गई। 2021 में इसी दिन अमेरिकी बच्चों के पुस्तक डिजाइनर, चित्रकार, बाल साहित्यकार, द वेरी हंग्री कैटरपिलर कहे गये एरिक कार्ले का निधन हुआ।

2022 ऑस्ट्रेलियाई लेबर पार्टी के एंथोनी अल्बानीज ने 2022 ऑस्ट्रेलियाई संघीय चुनाव जीतने के बाद ऑस्ट्रेलिया के 31वें प्रधान मंत्री के रूप में शपथ ली, जिससे 9 साल के रूढ़िवादी शासन का अंत हुआ।

2023 अमेरिका में दक्षिण एशियाई सांस्कृतिक ज्ञान को बढ़ावा देने के लिए न्यूयॉर्क शहर के मेयर एरिक एडम्स ने भारत में जन्मी उद्यमी और लेखिका अनु सहगल को सम्मानित किया है। द कल्चर ट्री की संस्थापक और अध्यक्ष अनु सहगल को मंगलवार को न्यूयॉर्क में एशियन अमेरिकन एंड पैसिफिक आइलैंडर (एएपीआई) हेरिटेज रिसेप्शन 2023 में सम्मानित किया गया। इस सम्मेलन में प्रवासी और एशियाई समुदायों के 800 प्रमुख सदस्यों ने भाग लिया। मेयर एडम्स ने कहा, हम अपने जीवंत दक्षिण एशियाई समुदाय को एकजुट करते हुए सांस्कृतिक आदान-प्रदान को बढ़ावा देने के आपके प्रयास के लिए आपकी सराहना करते हैं। हम न्यूयॉर्क के एएपीआई सदस्यों की कई तरह से मदद करने के लिए तत्पर हैं और आप एक सकारात्मक अंतर पैदा करना जारी रखेंगी।

1592 Italy's world famous astronomer Giordano Bruno was arrested in Vienna because he had reported that the Earth revolves around the Sun, not that the Sun revolves around the Earth. This belief of Bruno was considered an anti-religious act.

1891 Par Fabian Lagerqvist was born in Växjö, Sweden, a famous Swedish writer, poet, dramatist, novelist, storyteller. Lagerqvist received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1951 for his significant contribution to the field of literature. One of the central themes of Lagerqvist's writings was the question of good and evil, for which he also drew on the Bible. As a Puritan he used religious motifs and figures from the Christian tradition without following the doctrines of the Church.

1905 Sultan Abdul Hamid II publicly announces the creation of the Ullah Millat for the Aromanians of the empire, which had been established the day before. Aromanian National Day is celebrated on 23 May. Some people also celebrate it on 22 May instead. Ullah Millat means separate recognized ethno-religious and linguistic community within the Ottoman Empire). 1988 Sugandha Santosh Mishra, a beautiful, bold film and television actress, comedian, radio jockey, television presenter, singer and model, known as Sugandha Mishra, was born in Jalandhar.
