54 रोमन सम्राट क्लॉडियस की रहस्यमय तरीके से मृत्यु हो गई। माना जाता है कि उनकी पत्नी एग्रीपिना ने उन्हें जहर देकर मार डाला।

467 चीन में उत्तरी वेई के सम्राट जियाओवेन का जन्म हुआ जो बड़े होकर उत्तरी वेई के सम्राट बने।

982 लियाओ के सम्राट जिंगजोंग (व्यक्तिगत नाम येलु जियान, शिष्टाचार नाम जियानिंग) चीन के खितान के नेतृत्व वाले लियाओ राजवंश के पांचवें सम्राट का निधन हुआ। उन्होंने सरकारी दक्षता में सुधार किया और भ्रष्टाचार कम किया। वह उत्तरी सांग राजवंश के साथ युद्ध करने के लिए जाने जाते थे। एक शिकार यात्रा के दौरान उनकी मृत्यु हो गई और उनकी पत्नी ने बाद में उनके 11 वर्षीय बेटे सम्राट शेंगजोंग की संरक्षिका के रूप में कार्य किया। बाल्यकाल में शेंगजोंग को राजा नियुक्त कर दिया गया था।

1066 बैटल ऑफ हेस्टिंग्स ब्रिटेन के एक कस्बे हेस्टिंग्स 14 अक्टूबर 1066 को नॉर्मंडी के ड्यूक विलियम की नॉर्मन-फ्रांसीसी सेना और एंग्लो-सैक्सन राजा हेरोल्ड गॉडविंसन के अधीन एक अंग्रेजी सेना के बीच युद्ध शुरु हुआ जिससे इंग्लैंड की नॉर्मन विजय की शुरुआत हुई।

1332 रिनचिनबल खान मंगोलों का खगन और युआन राजवंश का सम्राट बना, जिसने केवल 53 दिनों तक शासन किया।

1381 अरुंडेल के 12वें अर्ल, अंग्रेज राजनीतिज्ञ, इंग्लैंड के लॉर्ड हाई कोषाध्यक्ष थॉमस फिट्जएलन का जन्म हुआ।

1598 फ्रांस के राजा हेनरी चतुर्थ ने नांत का ऐतिहासिक आदेश जारी किया। इस आदेश के आधार पर प्रोटेस्टेंट इसाईयों को पूर्ण धार्मिक स्वतंत्रता दी गयी।

1642 नीदरलैंड में जन्मे डच खगोलशास्त्री क्रिश्चियन ह्यूगेंस ने मंगल के दक्षिणी ध्रुव के पर्वत शिखर का पता लगाया। उन्होंने पेंडुलम घड़ी का आविष्कार भी किया।

1644 मुगल शहंशाह शाहजहां के बेटे शहजादे दारा शिकोह के पुत्र सिपिहर शिकोह का जन्म आगरा में हुआ।

1773 व्हर्लपूल आकाशगंगा की खोज चार्ल्स मेसियर ने की।

1877 भूलाभाई देसाई भारत के एक प्रख्यात विधिवेत्ता, प्रमुख संसदीय नेता तथा महात्मा गांधी के विश्वस्त सहयोगी का जन्म हुआ।

1899 हाॅलीवुड फिल्मों के विश्व प्रसिद्ध निर्देशक अल्फ्रेड हिचकॉक का जन्म हुआ।

1903 बोस्टन रेड सोक्स ने आठवें गेम में पिट्सबर्ग पाइरेट्स को हराकर पहली आधुनिक विश्व सीरीज जीती।

1908 मार्गरेट ट्रैवर्स सिमंस ब्रिटेन की संसद में पहुंचने और बोलने वाली प्रथम महिला बनीं।

1911 दादा मुनि के नाम से मशहूर फिल्म अभिनेता अशोक कुमार का जन्म भागलपुर, बिहार में हुआ। इनका वास्तविक नाम कुमुदीलाल गांगुली है। यह विख्यात गायक और अभिनेता किशोर कुमार के भाई हुए। किशोर का भी वास्तविक नाम आभास कुमार गांगुली है। इसी दिन प्रिंस आर्थर, ड्यूक ऑफ कनॉट और स्ट्रैथर्न, शाही वंश के कनाडा के पहले गवर्नर जनरल बने।

1913 इंग्लैंड के हैरी ब्रेअर्ली, शेफील्ड ने स्टेनलेस स्टील का आविष्कार किया।

1914 गैरेट मोर्गन ने गैस मास्क की खोज की और उसका पेंटेट कराया।

1918 दुनिया भर में शानदार कारें बनाने वाली जर्मन कंपनी बीएमडब्ल्यू एक पब्लिक कंपनी बनी। यानी इस प्राइवेट कंपनी को सरकार ने अधिग्रहित कर लिया।

1923 अमेरिका की कंपनी स्टील कॉर्प ने 8 घंटे के कार्य समय को मंजूरी दी। इससे पहले मजदूरों से कारखानों में 12 से 18 घंटे तक काम कराया जाता और वेतन तथा अन्य सुविधाएं कम दी जातीं। काम के घंटे 8 करने को लेकर अमरिका में पचासों साल आंदोलन चला और इस मजदूर आंदोलन में सरकार और पूंजीपतियों द्वारा हजारों मजदूर मार डाले गये, बहुतों को प्रताड़ित किया गया, जेलों में लंबे समय तक रखा गया।

1943 इटली ने जर्मनी के खिलाफ युद्ध की घोषणा की.

1954 पाकिस्तान का राष्ट्रगान कौमी तराना का पूरा संस्करण पहली बार रेडियो पाकिस्तान पर प्रसारित किया गया।

1962 1980 के दशक में प्रेमगीत आदि कुछ फिल्मों में दिखाई दी अभिनेत्री अनीता राज यानी अनीता राज खुराना का जन्म हुआ। वे फिल्मों में ज्यादा नहीं चल सकीं। उन्होंने कुछ टेलीविजन धारावाहिकों में भी काम किया।

1976 बोलिविया के दक्षिण में एक बोइंग 707 विमान के दुर्घटनाग्रस्त होकर रिहाइशी इलाके में गिरने से 100 से अधिक लोगों की मौत. हुई। डॉ. एफ. ए. मर्फी द्वारा रोग अमेरिकी नियंत्रण और रोकथाम केंद्र सीडीसी में इबोला वायरस का पहला इलेक्ट्रॉन माइक्रोग्राफ लिया गया।

1981 मिस्र के लोगों ने अनवर सादत की हत्या के एक सप्ताह बाद हुस्नी मुबारक को देश का नया राष्ट्रपति चुना।

1983 शिकागो, संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका में आम जनता के लिए पहली सेल्युलर मोबाइल फोन सेवा अमेरिटेक मोबाइल कम्युनिकेशंस ने उपलब्ध कराई।

1987 कोस्टारिका के राष्ट्रपति ऑस्कर आरियास को शांति का नोबेल पुरस्कार मिला। इसी दिन अपने अभिनय और गायन कला से करोड़ों लोगों को अपना दीवाना बनाने वाले किशोर कुमार का निधन हुआ। इस प्रख्यात भारतीय गायक किशोर का असली नाम आभास कुमार गांगुली था। उनका जन्म 4 अगस्त 1929 को मध्य प्रदेश के खंडवा में हुआ था। किशोर कुमार जितना एक गायक के तौर पर जाने जाते हैं, उतना ही एक अभिनेता के तौर पर भी। किशोर कुमार के करियर की शुरुआत एक अभिनेता के रूप में फिल्म शिकारी (1946) से हुई। इस फिल्म में उनके बड़े भाई अशोक कुमार ने लीड रोल निभाया था। उन्हें पहली बार गाने का मौका मिला 1948 में बनी फिल्म जिद्दी में। इसमें किशोर ने देव आनंद के लिए गाना गाया। किशोर कुमार केएल सहगल के जबर्दस्त प्रशंसक थे, इसलिए उन्होंने यह गीत उन की शैली में ही गाया। उन्होंने राजेश खन्ना के लिए 92 फिल्मों में रिकॉर्ड 245 गाने गाए। 1997 में मध्य प्रदेश सरकार ने उनके नाम पर पुरस्कार शुरू किया। कुछ साल पहले किशोर के बच्चों ने खंडवा का मकान एक कारोबारी को बेच दिया। 1975 में प्रधानमंत्री श्रीमती इंदिरा गांधी ने इमरजेंसी लगाई तो बड़े लोगों को सरकार का साथ देने के लिए किशोर कुमार को तैयार करने का प्रयास किया गया। किशोर ने सरकार का समर्थन करने से इनकार कर दिया फलस्वरूप रेडियो और टीवी पर किशोर के गानों का प्रसारण रोक दिया गया।

1988 टेलीविजन की जानी मानी, खूबसूरत, बोल्ड अभिनेत्री तथा माॅडल कादंबरी कदम का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1989 जानी मानी मराठी फिल्म, टेलीविजन और थिएटर कलाकार, गीतकार, कवियत्रि तथा माॅडल स्प्रुहा जोशी का जन्म मुंबई में हुआ। 

1990 मिस यूनिवर्स 2010 सेकेंड रनर अप इंडिया पीजेंट, हिंदी, तमिल एवं तेलुगू फिल्म अभिनेत्री तथा माॅडल पूजा हेगड़े का जन्म मुंबई में हुआ।

1993 पूर्वी पापुआ न्यू गिनी फिनिस्टर रेंज में आए भूकंपों की एक श्रृंखला के कारण हुए बड़े पैमाने पर भूस्खलन की चपेट में आकर कम से कम 60 लोगों की मौत हो गई और भारी संपत्ति क्षति हुई।

1995 जानी मानी खूबसूरत, बोल्ड मलयालम फिल्म अभिनेत्री तथा माॅडल आहना कृष्णा का जन्म केरल की राजधानी तिरुअनंतपुरम में हुआ।

1999 अटल बिहारी वाजपेयी तीसरी बार देश के प्रधानमंत्री बने।

2000 दक्षिण कोरियाई राष्ट्रपति किम दाई जुंग को शांति का नोबेल पुरस्कार दिए जाने की घोषणा हुई। इसी दिन प्रसिद्ध भारतीय बेहतर फुटबॉलर जरनैल सिंह का निधन हुआ।

2001 अफ्रीकी देश नाइजीरिया में अमेरिका विरोधी प्रदर्शन के दौरान भड़की साम्प्रदायिक हिंसा में लगभग 200 व्यक्ति मारे गये। इनमें से ज्यादातर पुलिस कार्रवाई में मारे गये।

2002 इंडोनेशिया के बाली नाइट क्लब में हुए भीषण विस्फोट से 200 से अधिक लोग मारे गये और 300 से अधिक घायल हुए।

2003 अमेरिका के डलास में एक बेहद गंभीर चिकित्सकीय योजना के अंतर्गत 26 घंटे तक चले जटिल आपरेशन के बाद मिस्र के जुड़वां बच्चों के आपस में जुड़े सिरों को अलग करने में आपरेशन सफल रहा। इसी दिन 2003 में जर्मनी ने स्वीडन को हराकर पहली बार विश्व कप फुटबाल टूर्नामेंट जीता। 2003 में इसी दिन नई दिल्ली में इंटरपोल सदस्य देशों के प्रतिनिधियों का सम्मेलन प्रारम्भ हुआ। इसी दिन 2003 में पहली बार मानव को लेकर चीनी अंतरिक्ष यान लांग मार्च 2 एफ उड़ा।

2004 यूनान यानी ग्रीस की राजधानी एथेंस में 28वें ओलंपिक खेलों की शुरूआत हुई। इसी दिन सैकड़ों फिल्मों में काम करने वाली जानी-मानी अभिनेत्री निरुपा रॉय का निधन हुआ। इन्हें दुख की रानी भी कहा गया। इन्होंने बहुत फिल्मों में मां के रोल किये।

2005 जर्मनी के प्रख्यात नाटककार हेराल्ड पिंटर को वर्ष 2005 के साहित्य का नोबल पुरस्कार देने की घोषणा हुई।

2006 बांग्लादेश के मोहम्मद युनुस और उनके द्वारा स्थापित ग्रामीण बैंक को नोबेल पुरस्कार दिए जाने की घोषाणा की गई।

2007 पुरातत्वविदों ने रडार इमेजरी का उपयोग करते हुए बताया कि खमेर साम्राज्य की पूर्व राजधानी अंगकोर, 3,000 वर्ग किलोमीटर क्षेत्र को कवर करने वाला और 5000000 की आबादी वाला सबसे बड़ा गैर औद्योगिक शहरी केंद्र था। बौद्ध धर्म की बहुलता वाला यह दक्षिण पूर्वी एशियाई देश अब कंबोडिया कहलाता है। राजधानी नोम पेन्ह है।

2008 उत्तर प्रदेश के रायबरेली में रेल कोच फैक्ट्री की स्थापना के लिए दी गई जमीन को वापस लिए जाने के मामले में इलाहाबाद हाईकोर्ट की लखनऊ पीठ ने यथास्थिति बनाये रखने के आदेश दिए।

2009 प्राकृतिक आपदाओं के प्रति जागरूकता, पूर्व तैयारियों, बाद के राहत, बचाव, पुनर्वास और आपदाओं के विविध पहलुओं समन्वय, सहयोग इत्यादि के लिए संयुक्त राष्ट्र संघ की अगुवाई में आपदा जोखिम न्यूनीकरण के लिए अंतर्राष्ट्रीय दिवस आयोजित किया गया। हालांकि यह दिवस अलग, अलग नामों और विषयों पर 1989 से आयोजित हो रहा था। लेकिन 2015 से यह अपने वर्तमान स्वरूप में आयोजित हो रहा है।

2010 चिली के अटाकामा रेगिस्तान में खदान धंसने पर उसमें फंसे 69 श्रमिकों को कड़े प्रयासों के बाद सकुशल बाहर निकाला गया।

2011 चेक गणराज्य की राजधानी प्राग में लोगों ने पहला समलैंगिक गौरव मार्च निकालाा। इस आयोजन की निगरानी तीन सौ पुलिस कर्मियों द्वारा की गई, जबकि हजारों लोगों ने पूरे शहर में मार्च किया। इसी दिन 2011 में भारत के सरकारी दफ्तरों में इस्तेमाल होने वाले हिंदी के कठिन शब्दों की जगह उर्दू, फारसी, सामान्य हिंदी और अंग्रेजी के शब्दों का उपयोग करने के निर्देश दिए। गृह मंत्रालय के राजभाषा विभाग की सचिव वीणा उपाध्याय ने इस संबंध में सभी मंत्रालयों और विभागों को दिशा-निर्देश जारी किए।

2012 पाकिस्तान के दारा अदम में हुए एक आत्मघाती हमले में 15 लोगों की मौत हुई।

2102 ट्यूनीशिया के हजारों महिलाओं और पुरुषों ने महिलाओं के अधिकारों को कम करने के लिए इस्लामी नेतृत्व वाली सरकार के विरोध में राजधानी ट्यूनिस में प्रदर्शन किये। अब वहां महिला प्रधानमंत्री नियुक्त की गई है।

2013 मध्य प्रदेश के दतिया जिले में एक पुल पर भगदड़ मचने से 109 लोगों की मौत हो गई और तमाम लोग घायल हुए.।

2016 अमेरिका के गायक और गीतकर बॉब डिलन को साहित्य के लिए नोबेल पुरस्कार दिए जाने का ऐलान हुआ। 2016 में इसी दिन दारियो फो विख्यात इतालवी नाटककार, अभिनेता, निर्देशक और संगीतकार नोबेल पुरस्कार विजेता का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन जिम प्रेंटिस, कनाडाई वकील और राजनीतिज्ञ, अल्बर्टा के 16वें प्रीमियर का निधन हुअ।

2017 अल्बर्ट जाफी, मालागासी राजनीतिज्ञ का निधन हुआ।

2018 अन्नपूर्णा देवी भारत की प्रमुख संगीतकार का निधन हुआ। यह सुरबहार वाद्य यंत्र की प्रसिद्ध वादक थी। मैहर घराना के संस्थापक अलाउद्दीन खान की बेटी और शिष्या थीं। जाने-माने सरोद वादक उस्ताद अली अकबर खान उनके भाई थे। उन्हें 1977 में भारत सरकार द्वारा कला के क्षेत्र में पद्म भूषण से सम्मानित किया गया था।

982 Emperor Jingzong of Liao (personal name Yelü Jian, courtesy name Jianning), the fifth emperor of the Khitan-led Liao dynasty of China, died. He improved government efficiency and reduced corruption. He was known to have waged war with the Northern Song dynasty. He died during a hunting trip and his wife later served as conservator of his 11-year-old son, Emperor Shengzong. Shengzong was appointed king during his childhood.

1066 Battle of Hastings The battle began on 14 October 1066 in Hastings, a town in Britain, between the Norman-French army of Duke William of Normandy and an English army under the Anglo-Saxon king Harold Godwinson, marking the beginning of the Norman conquest of England.

In this Kishore sang a song for Dev Anand. Kishore Kumar was a big fan of KL Sehgal, so he sang this song in his style. He sang a record 245 songs in 92 films for Rajesh Khanna.
