539 ईसा पूर्व जूलियन कैलेंडर के अनुसार 12 अक्टूबर को फारस के राजा साइरस की सेना ने बेबीलोन पर कब्जा कर लिया, जिससे बेबीलोन साम्राज्य समाप्त हो गया।

322 ईसा पूर्व डेमोस्थनीज का प्राचीन एथेंस में निधन हुआ। डेमोस्थनीज प्रतिष्ठित यूनानी राजनेता और वक्ता थे। उनके भाषण समकालीन एथेनियन बौद्धिक कौशल की एक महत्वपूर्ण अभिव्यक्ति हैं और चौथी शताब्दी ईसा पूर्व के दौर के प्राचीन यूनान की राजनीति और संस्कृति में उनका महत्वपूर्ण स्थान है।

633 हैटफील्ड चेज युद्ध के दौरान नॉर्थम्ब्रिया के राजा एडविन को मर्सिया के पेंदा और ग्विनेड के कैडवलन के गठबंधन लड़ाकों ने पराजित कर मार डाला।

1279 जापान में बौद्ध धर्म की निचिरेन शोशू शाखा की स्थापना हुई।

1398 ग्रैंड ड्यूक आॅफ लिथुआनिया वियातुतास द ग्रेट और ट्युटोनिक नाइट्स के ग्रैंड मास्टर कोनराड वॉन जुंगिंगन ने समोगाइटिया नाइट्स को सौंपने के लिए सालिनास संधि पर हस्ताक्षर किए।

1406 चेन यानजियांग इंडोनेशिया से राजवंशीय कोरिया का दौरा करने वाले पहले व्यक्ति बने जो चार महीने पहले जावा से निकलने के बाद 12 अक्टूबर को सियोल पहुँचे।

1492 इतालवी नाविक, खोजी और यात्री क्रिस्टोफर कोलंबस ने अपनी पहली अमेरिका यात्रा के दौरान यह मानकर कि वह ईस्ट इंडीज तक पहुंच गया एक कैरिबियन द्वीप पर जहाज से धरती पर आया। जिससे अमेरिका के यूरोपीय उपनिवेशीकरण की शुरुआत हुई।

1711 कैरेल छठे को हैब्सबर्ग रोमन कैथोलिक सम्राट का ताज पहनाया गया।

1776 ब्रिटिश ब्रिगेड ने ब्रॉन्क्स में थोरग नेकस रोड की सुरक्षा करना शुरू कर दिया।

1792 अमेरिका की खोज करने वाले क्रिस्टोफर कोलंबस को मेरीलैंड के बाल्टीमोर में पहला स्मारक समर्पित किया गया। इसी दिन 1792 में क्रिस्टोफर कोलंबस के अमेरिका खोजने के 300 साल बाद न्यू यॉर्क सिटी में संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका में पहला कोलंबस दिवस समारोह आयोजित किया गया। तब तक यूरोपियों का राज पूरी तरह अमेरिका पर हो चुका था।

1847 प्रसिद्ध जर्मन आविष्कारक वर्नर वॉन सीमेंस ने सीमेंस एंड हैल्स्के की स्थापना की, जो बाद में सीमेंस एजी में बदल गयी, जो यूरोप की सबसे बड़ी इंजीनियरिंग कंपनी बनी।

1860 ब्रिटिश और फ्रांसीसी सेना ने चीन की राजधानी बीजिंग पर कब्जा जमाया।

1864 प्रमुख बंगाली कवियत्रि, सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता और स्त्री अधिकारवादी कामिनी राय का जन्म हुआ। कहा जाता है कि यह भारत की पहली स्नातक तक पढ़ने वाली महिला भी बनीं।

1871 भारत में ब्रिटिश सरकार ने क्रिमिनल ट्राइब्स एक्ट लागू किया गया जिसके तहत 160 स्थानीय समुदायों को अपराधी जाति घोषित कर दिया गया।

1891 पटियाला, पंजाब के महाराजा भूपिंदर सिंह का जन्म हुआ।

1892 संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका की प्लेज ऑफ अलजाइनेस को पहली बार शिकागो, इलिनोइस में विश्व के कोलंबियन एक्सपोजिशन के उद्घाटन के साथ सार्वजनिक स्कूलों में इस्तेमाल किया गया।

1915 एक जर्मन फायरिंग दस्ते ने मित्र देशों के सैनिकों को बेल्जियम के कब्जे से बचने में मदद करने के लिए ब्रिटिश नर्स एडिथ कैवेल को मार डाला।

1917 प्रथम विश्व युद्ध में न्यूजीलैंड के सैनिकों को 2,735 लोगों की मौत का सामना करना पड़ा। पासचेंडेले की पहली लड़ाई में यह एक दिन में देश का सबसे बड़ा नुकसान हुआ।

1928 अमेकिा के बोस्टन के चिल्ड्रन हॉर्ट्स में फिलिप ड्रिंकर और उनके सहयोगियों द्वारा डिजाइन एक आयरन लंग मेडिकल वेंटिलेटर, पहली बार पोलियोमाइलाइटिस के इलाज के लिए इस्तेमाल किया गया।

1935 भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के नेता, लोक सभा सदस्य, केंद्रीय ग्रह मंत्री और लोक सभा के अध्यक्ष रहे शिवराज पाटिल का जन्म हुआ।

1938 मशहूर उर्दू शायर और गीतकार मुक्तदा हुसैन निदा फाजली का जन्म ग्वालियर में हुआ।

1937 सरकारी फेडरल एजेंट ने 1937 में कोलंबस दिवस पर विद्रोही गुट के अल ब्रैडी और उसके साथियों को गोली मार दी।

1945 महान चीनी नेता माओ त्से तुंग के नेतृत्व में कम्युनिस्टों ने शांगडांग अभियान पर जीत हासिल की। चीन में 1949 में समाजवादी क्रांति हुई।

1948 बंगलौर के पास एक नाच गांव नृत्यग्राम की स्थापना करने वाली नृत्यांगना और माॅडल प्रोतिमा गौरी बेदी का जन्म दिल्ली में हुआ।

1960 जापान सोशलिस्ट पार्टी के नेता इंजीरो आसनुमा की हत्या एक समुराई तलवार का इस्तेमाल करके की गई थी और फांसी दिए जाने की इस कार्रवाई का सीधा प्रसारण टीवी पर किया गया।

1960 न्यूयॉर्क में संयुक्त राष्ट्र महासभा के अंतिम दिन सोवियत नेता निकिता ख्रुश्चेव ने टेबल पर जूता बजा कर तहलका मचा दिया। फिलीपींस के प्रतिनिधि अपने वक्तव्य में पूर्वी यूरोप में राजनीतिक और नागरिक अधिकारों को दबाने की बात कर रहे थे। इस पर ख्रुश्चेव ने मुट्ठी से टेबल को जोर-जोर से पीटना शुरु किया। फिर उन्होंने सैंडल निकाले और उससे टेबल बजाने लगे। वे तब तक ऐसा करते रहे, जब तक कि हॉल में सबकी निगाहें उनकी ओर नहीं उठ गईं। इस पर ख्रुश्चेव ने कहा, कि खूब मजा आया! यूएन ऐसी संसद है, जहां अल्पमत में होने पर माइनॉरिटी को खुद का अहसास दिलाना पड़ता है। अभी हम अल्पमत में हैं, लेकिन ज्यादा वक्त तक नहीं रहेंगे। 

1963 प्रसिद्ध गीतकार, गजलकार और अपने मौलिक लेखन तथा चिंतन के लिए सुपरिचित शिवकुमार बिलगरामी का जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन जाने माने गिटारवादक और संगीतकार एहसान नूरानी का जन्म हुआ। 

1964 सोवियत संघ ने वोस्तोक-1 को लॉन्च किया था। इस स्पेसक्राफ्ट में पहली बार बिना स्पेस सूट पहने अंतरिक्ष यात्री स्पेस में गए। सोवियत संघ ने वोस्तोक स्पेसक्राफ्ट के जरिए यूरी गागरिन को अंतरिक्ष में भेजकर अंतरिक्ष रेस की शुरुआत की। सोवियत संघ ने वोस्कोद-1 लॉन्च किया था। इसके पायलट थे व्लादिमिर कोमारोव। उनके साथ वैज्ञानिक कॉन्स्टेंटिन फोकटिस्टोव और फिजिशियन बोरिस येगोरोव भी अतंरिक्ष में गए थे। इस स्पेसक्राफ्ट की सफल यात्रा ने अतंरिक्ष में कई रिकॉर्ड अपने नाम किए थे। ये दुनिया का पहला स्पेसक्राफ्ट था, जिसमें अंतरिक्ष यात्री बिना किसी स्पेस सूट के अंतरिक्ष में गए थे। ये दुनिया का पहला मल्टी मैन्ड स्पेसक्राफ्ट भी था, जिसमें एक वैज्ञानिक और फिजीशियन अंतरिक्ष के सफर पर निकले थे।

1966 चिकित्सा के लिए नोबेल पुरस्कार दो अमेरिकी डॉक्टरों, फ्रांसिस पेटन और चार्ल्स बी हगिंस को प्रदान किया गया। उन्होंने अपना जीवन कैंसर से बचने के उपाय खोजनें में लगाया।

1967 भारतीय स्वतंत्रता सेनानी और जननेता डॉ. राममनोहर लोहिया का निधन हुआ।

1968 मध्य अफ्रीकी देश ईक्वाटोरियल गिनी को स्पेन से स्वतंत्रता मिली और यह दिन इस देश का राष्ट्रीय दिवस घोषित किया गया।

1977 जाने माने फिल्म अभिनेता और माॅडल देव सिंह गिल का जन्म पुणे में हुआ। इसी दिन जाने माने टेलीविजन अभिनेता एवं माॅडल हुसैन कुवाजरवाला का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1981 स्नेहा के नाम से मशहूर खूबसूरत, बोल्ड, लोकप्रिय तमिल, तेलुगू एवं मलयालम फिल्म अभिनेत्री तथा माॅडल सुहासिनी राजाराम नायडू का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1983 मलयालम सिनेमा के मशहूर अभिनेता एवं निर्देशक सौबिन शाहीर का जन्म कोच्चि में हुआ।

1985 डांस इंडिया डांस की विजेता रही जानी मानी नृत्यांगना, कोरियोग्राफर और टीवी शो प्रस्तोता शक्ति मोहन का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1986 जेवियर परेज द कुइयार संयुक्त राष्ट्र संघ के महासचिव निर्वाचित हुए।

1991 दक्षिण भारत के मशहूर फिल्म अभिनेता और राजनीतिज्ञ कमल हासन और उनकी पत्नी सारिका ठाकुर की बहुचर्चित, खूबसूरत, बोल्ड फिल्म अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल बेटी अक्षरा हासन का जन्म हुआ।

1992 मिस्र की राजधानी काहिरा के दक्षिणी क्षेत्र में आए 5.8 के भूकंप से 545 लोग मारे गए और कई हजार लोग घायल हुए। खरबों रुपये की संपत्ति नष्ट हुई।

1992 चंद्र शेखर गौर एवं नीना गौर की बेटी हर्षिता गौर के नाम से सुपरिचित खूबसूरत, बोल्ड फिल्म अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल हर्षिता शेखर गौर का जन्म दिल्ली में हुआ।

1993 खूबसूरत, बोल्ड दक्षिण भारतीय फिल्म अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल रुक्शार ढिल्लों का जन्म लंदन में हुआ।

1993 मशहूर खूबसूरत, बोल्ड दक्षिण भारतीय फिल्म अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल मीनाक्षी दीक्षित का जन्म रायबरेली, उत्तर प्रदेश में हुआ।

1997 अल्जीरिया के सिदी दाऊद शहर के फॉल्स रोड ब्लॉक पर नरसंहार में 43 लोगों की हत्या की गई।

1998 अमेरिकी संसद ने ऑनलाइन कॉपीराइट विधेयक पारित किया।

1999 पाकिस्तान में सेना के निर्वाचित सरकार का तख्ता पलट देने के बाद जनरल परवेज मुशर्रफ सत्ता पर काबिज हुए, इसी दिन संयुक्त राष्ट्र ने जानकारी दी कि विश्व 6 अरबवें बच्चे/ शिशु का सरायेवों में जन्म हुआ है। इसी दिन अंतरिक्ष अन्वेषण यान गैलिलियो बृहस्पति ग्रह के ज्वालामुखीय चंद्रमा आई.ओ. के निकट पहुँचा।

2000 स्पेसक्राफ्ट डिस्कवरी को फ्लोरिडा से स्पेस में भेजा गया।

2001 संयुक्त राष्ट्र और उसके महासचिव कोफी अन्नान को संयुक्त रूप से नोबेल शांति पुरस्कार से सम्मानित करने की घोषणा की गई।

2002 यूरोपीय पर्यवेक्षकों ने पाकिस्तान में सम्पन्न चुनावों में धांधली का आरोप लगाया। इसी दिन बाली के एक नाइट क्लब में आतंकवादी हमले में 202 लोगों की मौत हुई।

2004 पाकिस्तान ने गौरी 1 मिसाइल का परीक्षण किया।

2005 पीपुल्स रिपब्लिक ऑफ चाइना ने मानव युक्त अंतरिक्ष यान शेनझो 6 लॉन्च किया और अंतरिक्ष यात्री नीह हिशेंग ने इसमें पांच दिन बिताए।

2007 अमेरिका के पूर्व उपराष्ट्रपति अल गोर व संयुक्त राष्ट्र के अंतरराष्ट्रीय पैनल आईपीसीसी को संयुक्त रूप से नोबेल शांति पुरस्कार प्रदान किया गया।

2010 फेसबुक को ग्रीनपीस ने एक पत्र भेजा जिसमें हजारों लोगों के हस्ताक्षर हैं जिसमें फेसबुक से कहा गया कि वह कोयले से बनने वाली बिजली का इस्तेमाल कम करे।

2008 इसाइयों के सर्वोच्च धर्माधिकारी पोप ने 12 अक्टूबर 2008 को भारत की इसाई मिशनरी सिस्टर अल्फोंसा को संत घोषित किया, जो भारत की पहली महिला संत बनी थीं। देश में गिरजाघरों के 2,000 साल के इतिहास में यह उपाधि पाने वाली वे पहली महिला हैं। उन्हें संत घोषित करने की प्रक्रिया 55 साल पहले प्रारंभ हुई थी। इससे पहले पोप जॉन पाल द्वितीय ने उन्हें धन्य घोषित किया था। कैथोलिक परंपरा में इसे बीएटिफिकेशन कहा जाता है। सिस्टर अल्फोंसा का जन्म केरल में कोट्टायम के निकट एक गांव कुडामालूर में हुआ था। मात्र 36 वर्ष की उम्र में उनकी मौत हो गई थी। सिस्टर अल्फोंसा वेटिकन द्वारा संत घोषित की जाने वाली दूसरी भारतीय थी। इससे पहले संत गोंसालो गार्सिया को यह उपाधि दी गई थी। संत गार्सिया एक भारतीय मां और पुर्तगाली पिता की संतान थी। उनका जन्म सन 1556 में मुंबई के निकट वाशी में हुआ था।

2008 उत्तर प्रदेश के रायबरेली के लालगंज में रेल कोच फैक्ट्री के लिए तीन माह पहले दी गई लगभग पाँच सौ एकड़ जमीन को उत्तर प्रदेश सरकार ने वापस लिया।

2011 भारत और वियतनाम ने वियतनाम के समुद्री इलाके में तेल की खोज करने के लिए करार किया। इससे वियतनाम और चीन के रिश्तों में खटास आ गई थी, क्योंकि दक्षिण चीन सागर के इस इलाके पर चीन अपना दावा करता है। इस इलाके में प्रभुत्व को लेकर चीन के साथ कई देशों का विवाद है।

2014 सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता इवो मोरालेस लगातार तीसरी बार बोलीविया के राष्ट्रपति चुने गए। विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठन के सहयोग से अंतर्राष्ट्रीय अंधता निवारण एजेंसी (आईएपीबी) के दिशा-निर्देशन में अक्टूबर के दूसरे गुरुवार यानी 9 अक्टूबर 2014 को आयोजित विश्व दृष्टि दिवस 2014 का विषय था- अब और टालने योग्य अंधता नहीं। तब से हर साल अक्टूबर के दूसरे गुरुवार को यह आयोजन होता है।

2017 संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका ने यूनेस्को से हटने के अपने फैसले की घोषणा की। इजराइल ने इसका तुरंत अनुसरण किया। इसी दिन कराकास में मार्गरीटा डीएमिको का निधन हुआ जो प्रसिद्ध वेनेजुएलियन पत्रकार, शोधकर्ता और प्रोफेसर थीं, जिन्होंने वेनेजुएला में कला आलोचना और सांस्कृतिक पत्रकारिता पर व्यापक प्रभाव डाला।

2018 प्रिंसेस यूजिनी ने सेंट जॉर्ज चैपल, विंडसर कैसल में जैक ब्रुक्सबैंक से शादी की।

2019 जबरदस्त तूफान टाइफून हागिबिस ने जापान में भारी तबाही मचाई, जिसमें कम से कम 10 लोगों की मौत हो गई और दस लाख लोग एक समय के लिए बेघर हुए। इसी दिन 2019 में केन्या के एलियुड किपचोगे वियना में दो घंटे से भी कम समय में मैराथन दौड़ने वाले पहले व्यक्ति बने। 2019 में इसी दिन अमेरिका के न्यू ऑरलियन्स में निर्माणाधीन हार्ड रॉक होटल ढह गया, जिसमें दो की मौत हो गई और 2 घायल हो गए।

2020 वाशिंगटन, डी.सी. संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका में रोबर्टा राइट मैक्केन का निधन हुआ जो एक बेहद सम्मानित अमेरिकी सोशलाइट थीं। वह एडमिरल जॉन एस. मैक्केन जूनियर की पत्नी थीं, जिनसे उन्हें अमेरिकी सीनेटर जॉन एस. मैक्केन तृतीय और मंच अभिनेता तथा पत्रकार जो मैक्केन सहित तीन बच्चे हुए।
