803 एथेंस के आइरीन यानी बीजेंटाइन शासक का निधन हुआ।

1173 इटली के शहर पीसा स्थित विश्व के सात आश्चर्यों में शामिल झुकी हुई मीनार का निर्माण शुरू हुआ। यह करीब 200 साल में बनकर 1372 में पूरी हुई।

1909 ज्ञानपीठ पुरस्कार’ प्राप्त कन्नड़ साहित्यकार विनायक कृष्ण गोकाक का जन्म हुआ।

1910 अल्वा फिशर ने बिजली से चलने वाली वाशिंग मशीन का पेटेंट हासिल किया। चीनी मार्शल आर्टिस्ट चिन वू एथलेटिक एसोसिएशन के सह संस्थापक हुओ युआनजिया का निधन हुआ।

1915 भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के प्रभावशाली नेता तथा गुजरात के तीसरे मुख्यमंत्री हुए हितेंद्र देसाई का जन्म हुआ।

1925 सरकारी खजाना लूटने की क्रांतिकारियों की कार्रवाई प्रसिद्ध काकोरी कांड की घटना घटित हुई थी। राम प्रसाद बिस्मिल के नेतृत्व में क्रांतिकारी 10 लोगों ने रेल में गार्ड के डिब्बे में से लोहे की तिजोरी को तोड़कर चार हजार रुपये लेकर फरार हो गए। यह घटना काकोरी षड्यंत्र के नाम से प्रसिद्ध है।

1926 भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के प्रमुख राजनीतिज्ञ एम. एम. जेकब का जन्म हुआ।

1933 प्रसिद्ध हिंदी गद्यकार, उपन्यासकार, व्यंग्यकार, पत्रकार मनोहर श्याम जोशी का जन्म हुआ।

1936 जाने माने भारतीय ब्रिटिश लेखक, वक्ता और मानवाधिकार कार्यकर्ता सतीश कुमार का जन्म श्री डूंगरगढ़ में हुआ। इसी दिन जाने माने हिंदी फिल्मकार, निर्देशक और गीतकार सावन कुमार टाक का जन्म जयपुर, राजस्थान में हुआ।

1937 माॅरीशस के जाने माने हिंदी साहित्यकार अभिमन्यु अनत का जन्म हुआ।

1942 मुंबई में भारत छोड़ो आंदोलन के साथ करो या मरो का नारा देने के बाद राष्ट्रपिता महात्मा गांधी को उनके 50 समर्थकों के साथ ब्रिटिश भारत सरकार ने गिरफ्तार किया।

1942 स्वतंत्रता सेनानी नेताजी सुभाष चंद्र बोस ने मलाया (अब मलेशिया) में जापान की मदद से इंडियन नेशनल आर्मी की स्थापना की।

1945 अमेरिका ने जापान के 6 अगस्त को हिरोशिमा पर लिटिन बाॅय नामक परमाणु बम गिराने के बाद नागासाकी पर दूसरा परमाणु बम फैट मैन 9 अगस्त को गिराया जिससे लाखों लोग मारे गये और काफी नुकसान हुआ।

1955 प्रमुख खालिस्तानी आतंकी संगठन बब्बर खालसा इंटरनेशनल के सह संस्थापक जत्थेदार सुखदेव सिंह बब्बर का जन्म हुआ और 1992 की 9 अगस्त को यह पटियाला में मारे गये।

1961 भारत के जाने माने कारोबारी, बिग बाजार, फ्यूचर समूह, पैंटालून इत्यादि के मालिक किशोर बियानी का जन्म हुआ।

1962 प्रसिद्ध जर्मन कवि और लेखक नोबेल पुरुस्कार प्राप्त हरमैन हीसे का निधन हुआ।

1963 प्रख्यात अमेरिकी गायिका और अभिनेत्री व्हिटनी ह्यूसटन का जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन सोवियत संघ के दौर में मास्को में परमाणु हथियारों की परीक्षण प्रतिबंध संधि पर हस्ताक्षर करने वाला भारत पहला देश बना।

1965 सिंगापुर मलेशियाई संघ से अलग होकर स्वतंत्र राष्ट्र बना।

1969 जाने माने फिल्म एवं टेलीविजन अभिनेता विवेक मुसरान का जन्म हुआ।

1970 30 वर्ष जेल में बिताने वाले स्वतंत्रता सेनानी त्रिलोकनाथ चक्रवर्ती का निधन हुआ।

1971 भारत और सोवियत संघ ने 20 साल की अनाक्रमण संधि पर हस्ताक्षर किए। 1971 भारत-पाकिस्तान मैत्री संधि पर हस्ताक्षर।

1973 सोवियत संघ ने मार्स 07 का प्रक्षेपण किया।

1974 विपक्षी नेताओं आदि की जासूसी कराने वाले कुख्यात वॉटरगेट कांड का खुलासा होने पर अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति रिचर्ड निस्कन ने त्यागपत्र दिया, उप राष्ट्रपति जेराल्ड फोर्ड को राष्ट्रपति पद की शपथ दिलाई गई।

1975 जाने माने भारतीय फिल्म अभिनेता महेश बाबू का जन्म हुआ। जानी मानी ब्रिटिश फिल्म अभिनेत्री, माॅडल, नृत्यांगना एवं लेखिक अंजलि जय का जन्म बंगलौर में इसी दिन हुआ।

1980 भारत के जाने माने बाॅडी बिल्डर सुहास कर्माकर का जन्म कोल्हापुर में हुआ।

1991 जानी मानी बोल्ड, खूबसूरत दक्षिण भारतीय सिने अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल हंसिका मोटवानी का जन्म हुआ।

1993 जानी मानी खूबसूरत बोल्ड फैशन माॅडल और दक्षिण भारतीय सिनेमा की अभिनेत्री अंजू कुरियन का जन्म कोट्टायम में हुआ। इसी दिन जानी मानी जिम्नास्टिक दीपा कर्माकर का जन्म अगरतला में हुआ।

1995 23 दिसंबर 1994 के संकल्प 49/214 द्वारा, संयुक्त राष्ट्र महासभा ने निर्णय लिया कि विश्व के स्वदेशी लोगों के अंतर्राष्ट्रीय दशक के दौरान हर साल 9 अगस्त को विश्व के स्वदेशी लोगों का अंतर्राष्ट्रीय दिवस मनाया जाएगा। यह तारीख 1982 में मानव अधिकारों के संवर्धन और संरक्षण पर उप-आयोग के स्वदेशी आबादी पर संयुक्त राष्ट्र कार्य समूह की पहली बैठक के दिन को चिह्नित करती है। वर्ष 2016 में यह बताया गया कि लगभग 2,680 देशी भाषाएँ खतरे में थीं और विलुप्त होने की कगार पर थीं। इसलिए, संयुक्त राष्ट्र ने स्वदेशी भाषाओं के बारे में लोगों को समझाने और जागरूकता पैदा करने के लिए 2019 को स्वदेशी भाषाओं के अंतर्राष्ट्रीय वर्ष के रूप में नामित किया। इसमें स्वदेशी भाषा, संस्कृति के लिए व्यापक विचार विमर्श संरक्षण वाली नीतियां बनाने, अभियान चलाने पर जोर दिया गया। विश्व के मूल निवासियों का अंतर्राष्ट्रीय दिवस 9 अगस्त 1995 को विश्व स्तर पर मनाया गया।

1996 मास्टर ब्लास्टर कहे गये सचिन तेंदुलकर को भारतीय क्रिकेट टीम का कप्तान चुना गया।

1999 रूस के राष्ट्रपति बोरिस येल्तसिन ने प्रधानमंत्री सर्जेई स्तेपशिन को बर्खास्त कर खुफिया सेवा के प्रमुख व्लादिमीर पुतिन को कार्यवाहक प्रधानमंत्री नियुक्त किया।

2000 संसद ने मध्य प्रदेश पुनर्गठन विधेयक 2000 को मंजूरी दी जिससे एक अलग छत्तीसगढ़ राज्य के निर्माण का रास्ता साफ हुआ। 2000 में इसी दिन जिम्बाव्वे में व्यापक विरोध के बावजूद भूमि सुधार की प्रक्रिया शुरू हुई।

2002 पाकिस्तान में मिशनरी अस्पताल पर फिदायीन हमले में पांच व्यक्ति मारे गये और इसी दिन अफगानिस्तान के जलालाबाद शहर में एक बम विस्फोट में 50 लोग मारे गये। प्रसिद्ध कथावाचक एवं हिंदी साहित्यकार रामकिंकर उपाध्याय का निधन इसी दिन हुआ।

2005 अमेरिकी अंतरिक्ष एजेंसी नासा का मानवयुक्त अंतरिक्षयान डिस्कवरी 14 दिन की अपनी साहसिक और जोखिम भरी यात्रा के बाद कैलिफोर्निया स्थित एयरबेस पर सकुशल उतरा।

2006 नेपाल सरकार और माओवादियों के बीच संयुक्त राष्ट्र निगरानी मुद्दे पर सहमति बनी। इसी दिन भारतीय राज्य केरल ने पेप्सी और कोका-कोला कंपनियों के शीतल पेयों के निर्माण और खपत पर प्रतिबंध लगा दिया क्योंकि सरकार ने पाया कि इन पेय पदार्थों मानकों से अधिक कीटनाशक हैं। यह स्वास्थ्य के लिए हानिकारक हैं।

2007 अंतर्राष्ट्रीय अंतरिक्ष स्टेशन पर मरम्मत के महत्त्वपूर्ण कार्य को आगे बढ़ाने के लिए वैज्ञानिकों की टीम लेकर अंतरिक्ष यान एंडेवर अपने अभियान पर निकला।

2012 भारतीय सेना ने परमाणु हमला करने में सक्षम अग्नि-2 बैलेस्टिक मिसाइल का सफल परीक्षण किया।

2013 आतंकवादी खतरों के चलते अमेरिका ने पाकिस्तान में लाहौर स्थित अपने वाणिज्य दूतावास से राजनयिकों को हटाया।

2014 अमेरिका के मिसौरी के फर्ग्यूसन में एक 18 वर्षीय अफ्रीकी अमेरिकी पुरुष माइकल ब्राउन की फर्ग्यूसन पुलिस अधिकारी द्वारा कथित तौर पर हमला करने और उसके हथियार चुराने का प्रयास करने के बाद गोली मारकर हत्या कर दी गई, जिससे शहर में विरोध और अशांति फैल गई। पुलिस कार्रवाई का भारी विरोध हुआ।

2015 कय्यर किन्हन्ना राय, प्रसिद्ध भारतीय पत्रकार, लेखक और कवि, फिक्रेत ओट्यम, तुर्की चित्रकार और पत्रकार, फ्रैंक गिफोर्ड, अमेरिकी फुटबॉल खिलाड़ी, स्पोर्ट्सकास्टर और अभिनेता, जॉन हेनरी हॉलैंड, अमेरिकी कंप्यूटर वैज्ञानिक और अकादमिक, वाल्टर नाहुन लोपेज, होंडुरन फुटबॉलर और डेविड नोब्स, अंग्रेजी लेखक और पटकथा लेखक का निधन हुआ।

2016 सरकारी दमनकारी कानून आफ्सपा का 16 साल से भूख हड़ताल कर विरोध कर रहीं मणिपुर की आयरन लेडी, मानवाधिकार कार्यकत्री इरोम चानु शर्मिला ने शहद खाकर अपनी भूख हड़ताल खत्म की। इसे दुनिया की सबसे ज्यादा दिनों तक चलने वाली भूख हड़ताल माना जाता है।

1993 Anju Kurian, a well-known beautiful bold fashion model and actress in South Indian cinema, was born in Kottayam. On this day renowned gymnast Dipa Karmakar was born in Agartala.

1995 By resolution 49/214 of 23 December 1994, the United Nations General Assembly decided that the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples would be observed on 9 August every year during the International Decade of the World's Indigenous Peoples. This date marks the day of the first meeting of the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in 1982. In the year 2016 it was reported that around 2,680 indigenous languages were endangered and on the verge of extinction. Therefore, the United Nations designated 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages to educate people about indigenous languages and create awareness. In this, emphasis was laid on making policies for the protection of indigenous language and culture, running a campaign. The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples was observed globally on 9 August 1995.

2014 In Ferguson, Missouri, US, Michael Brown, an 18-year-old African American male, is shot and killed by a Ferguson police officer after allegedly assaulting and attempting to steal his weapon, sparking protests and unrest in the city. There was a huge protest against the police action.

2015 Kayyar Kinhanna Rai, renowned Indian journalist, author and poet, Fikret Otyum, Turkish painter and journalist, Frank Gifford, American football player, sportscaster and actor, John Henry Holland, American computer scientist and academic, Walter Nahun Lopez, Honduran footballer and David Nobbs, English author and screenwriter passed away.

2016 Iron Lady of Manipur, human rights activist Irom Chanu Sharmila, who has been on hunger strike for 16 years to protest against the government's repressive law AFSPA, ended her hunger strike by consuming honey. It is considered to be the longest hunger strike in the world.

2021 Pat Hitchcock, English actress and producer, Killer Cow, South African rapper, dancer and record producer and Jaraini Sarbini, noted Malaysian vocal artist, model and film actress passed away.
