1939 जेट इंधन वाले विश्व के पहले विमान ने जर्मनी से पहली उड़ान भरी।

1940 जाने माने भारतीय कारोबारी, मोदी इंटरप्राइजेज के मुखिया कृष्ण कुमार मोदी का जन्म पटियाला में हुआ।

1950 बीबीसी ने पहली बार स्थल-आधारित सीधा प्रसारण किया। प्रसारण की योजना बनाने के लिए दो महीने से भी ज्यादा का समय लगा। दो घंटे का ये प्रसारण इंग्लिश चैनल के दूसरे छोर यानी फ्रांस से किया गया।

1955 पहली गिनीज बुक आॅफ वलर््ड रिकाॅर्ड प्रकाशित हुई। गिनीज बुक आॅफ वलर््ड का विचार 1950 में आया। इंग्लैंड के अधीन आयरलैंड में गिनीज ब्रेवरी कंपनी के प्रबंध निदेशक सर ह्यूज बीवर अपने दोस्तों के साथ पक्षियों का शिकार कर रहे थे। इस बीच उनके सामने से चिड़ियों का एक झुंड बड़ी तेजी से गुजर गया। ह्यूज और उनके साथी सोच में पड़ गए कि इतनी तेजी से उड़ने वाले ये पक्षी आखिर कौन हैं ? सब अलग-अलग जवाब देने लगे, लेकिन परेशानी ये थी कि किसका जवाब सही है, ये पता करने का कोई तरीका नहीं था। ह्यूज और उनके दोस्तों ने किताबों में भी देखा, लेकिन कोई जानकारी नहीं मिली। तब ह्यूज को ये आइडिया आया कि एक ऐसी किताब बनाई जाए जिसमें सारे तथ्य हों। 1954 में ह्यूज ने इस आइडिया को दो जुड़वां भाइयों नोरिस और रोस के साथ साझा किया। नोरिस और रोस लंदन में एक तथ्य एकत्रित करने वाली एजेंसी में काम करते थे। दोनों को ये आइडिया पसंद आया और गिनीज बुक पर काम शुरू हुआ। तब लंदन की फ्लीट स्ट्रीट पर एक पुराने जिम में दफ्तर बनाया गया। 27 अगस्त 1955 को पहली गिनेज बुक प्रकाशित हुई। 198 पेज की ये किताब लोगों को इतनी पसंद आई कि दिसंबर तक ब्रिटेन में बेस्टसेलर बन गई। अगले ही साल अमेरिका में बुक लॉन्च की गई। 1960 तक इसकी 5 लाख कॉपी बिक चुकी थीं। इसके बाद अलग-अलग भाषाओं में छापी जाने लगी। अब 100 से ज्यादा देशों में 37 अलग-अलग भाषाओं में गिनीज बुक छपती है। जब इंटरनेट नहीं आया था तब ज्यादातर लोग तमाम जानकारियों के लिए गिनेज बुक का सहारा लेते थे।

1957 शुक्रवार 26 अगस्त 2022 को सेवानिवृत्त हुए भारत के 48वें प्रधान न्यायाधीश एनवी रमना यानी नुथालापति वेंकटा रमना का जन्म 27 अगस्त 1957 को हुआ।

1972 भारतीय प्रोफेशनल रेसलर और लिफ्टर दलीप सिंह राणा उर्फ ग्रेट खली का जन्म हुआ।

1976 दिल्ली में प्रख्यात भारतीय पार्श्वगायक मुकेश का निधन अमेरिका के मिशीगन राज्य के डेट्रायट में हुआ।

1976 भारतीय सशस्त्र सेना की प्रथम महिला जनरल मेजर जनरल जी अली राम मिलिट्री नर्सिंग सेवा की निदेशक नियुक्त हुई।

1979 भारत के अंग्रेज वायसराय और आजाद भारत के पहले गवर्नर जनरल लॉर्ड माउंटबेटन (ब्रिटिश नौसेना अफसर और राजवंश के रिश्तेदार लुइस फ्रांसिस अल्बर्ट विक्टर निकोलस माउंटबेटन) की 27 अगस्त 1979 को हत्या कर दी गई। वे अपने परिवार के साथ छुट्टियां मनाने निकले थे। तभी आयरिश उग्रवादियों ने उनकी नाव को बम धमाके से उड़ा दिया था। हमले में माउंटबेटन और उनके दो पोते निकोलस व पॉल मारे गऐ। आयरलैंड में क्लिफॉने नाम का एक गांव है। माउंटबेटन हर साल अपने परिवार के साथ इस गांव में छुट्टियां बिताने आया करते थे। आज आयरलैंड एक स्वतंत्र देश है। तब आयरिश लोग आजादी के लिए सशस्त्र संघर्ष चला रहे थे। 26 अगस्त को माउंटबेटन हर साल की तरह इस बार भी क्लिफॉने आए और समुद्र में मछलियां पकड़ने निकल पड़े। उन्होंने मछलियों के लिए जाल बिछाया और गांव लौट गए। होता यह था कि जाल रातभर समुद्र में लगा रहता और सुबह आकर माउंटबेटन जाल में फंसी मछलियों को निकाल लेते। 26-27 अगस्त की रात को आयरिश रिपब्लिकन आर्मी के कुछ लोगों ने उनकी नाव में विस्फोटक लगा दिए। अगले दिन यानी 27 अगस्त को सुबह करीब 11 बजे माउंटबेटन जाल में फंसी मछलियों को लेने समुद्र में लौटे। नाव समुद्र में थी तभी 11 बजकर 46 मिनट पर नाव में जोरदार धमाका हुआ। नाव के परखच्चे उड़ गए और 3 लोग हमले में मारे गए। हादसे की जांच शुरू हुई। एजेंसियों ने आयरिश रिपब्लिकन आर्मी के दो लोगों को गिरफ्तार किया। इनके नाम थे- थॉमस मैकमोहन और फ्रैंसिस मैकगर्ल। मैकमोहन को 19 साल की जेल की सजा सुनाई गई। फ्रैंसिस को सबूतों के अभाव में बरी कर दिया गया।

1980 फेमिना मिस इंडिया 2002, भारतीय मिस यूनिवर्स प्रतियोगी, जानी मानी फिल्म अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल नेहा धूपिया का जन्म कोच्चि, केरल में हुआ। इसी दिन 1980 में जानी मानी फिल्म एवं टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री, माॅडल, गायिका, स्टेज और टेलीविजन शो होस्ट शिबानी दांडेकर का जन्म पुणे में हुआ।

1985 नाइजीरिया में सैनिक क्रांति में मेजर जनरल मुहम्मद बुहारी की सरकार का तख्ता पलटा गया तथा जनरल इब्राहिम बाबनगिदा नये सैनिक शासक बने।

1988 ब्रेस्ट कैंसर के बारे में जागरूक करने वाली पेटा माॅडल और अभिनेत्री रोज़लिन खान का जन्म हुआ।

1990 राजनीतिक कारणों से वाशिंगटन स्थित इराकी दूतावास के 55 में से 36 कर्मचारियों को अमेरिका ने निष्कासित कर दिया।

1991 मालदोवा ने सोवियत संघ से आजाद होने की घोषणा की।

1993 जानी मानी भारतीय महिला तलवारबाज सी. ए. भवानी देवी का जन्म हुआ।

1994 जानी मानी फिल्म एवं टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल डोनाल बिष्ट का जन्म अलवर राजस्थान में हुआ।

1997 चमगादड़ों के बारे में भ्रांतियां दूर करने, इनके संरक्षण और चमगादड़ों के प्रति जन जागरूकता बढ़ाने के लिए अमेरिका और ब्रिटेन ने इंटरनेशनल बैट नाइट का आयोजन किया। यह अगस्त के अंतिम शनिवार और रविवार की रात को होता है। 2023 में यह अवसर 26 एवं 27 अगस्त को है।

1999 सोनाली बनर्जी भारत की प्रथम महिला मैरिन इंजनियर बनीं। 1999 में इसी दिन भारत ने कारगिल संघर्ष के दौरान अपने यहाँ बंदी बनाये गये पाकिस्तानी युद्धबंदियों को रिहा कर दिया।

2008 सर्वोच्च न्यायालय के सेवानिवृत्त न्यायाधिश ए.के. माथुर को सशस्त्र बल ट्रिब्यूनल का पहला अध्यक्ष बनाया गया। इसी दिन झारखंड मुक्तिमोर्चे के प्रमुख शिबु सोरेन ने झारखंड के छठे मुख्यमंत्री के पद की शपथ ग्रहण की। 2008 में इसी दिन अमेरिका में नेशनल डेमोक्रेटिक पार्टी की ओर से बराक ओबामा राष्ट्रपति पद के उम्मीदवार बनाए गए।

2010 प्रसिद्ध डच मार्शल आर्टिस्ट एंटोन गीसिंक एवं लूना वाचोन, कनाडाई-अमेरिकी पहलवान और खेल प्रशासक का निधन हुआ।

2011 संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका के पूर्वी तट पर तूफान आइरीन ने भारी तबाही मचाई जिसमें 47 लोग मारे गए और अनुमानित 15.6 अरब डॉलर की क्षति हुई।

2012 अमेरिकी मार्स रोवर क्यूरियोसिटी से ऑडियो रिकॉर्डिंग अमेरिकी अंतरिक्ष एजेंसी नासा के प्रशासक, चार्ल्स बोल्डेन का संदेश मंगल ग्रह की नई छवियों के साथ पृथ्वी पर प्रेषित किया गया।

2015 प्रसिद्ध बांग्लादेशी राजनीतिज्ञ एवं बांग्लादेश के 8वें प्रधानमंत्री काजी जफर अहमद का निधन हुआ।

2016 विश्व का सर्वाधिक आयु वाला तोता कुकी का ऑस्ट्रेलिया में निधन हुआ। यह तोता 30 जून 1933 को तरोंगा जू, न्यू साउथ वेल्स ऑस्ट्रेलिया में जन्मा और 27 अगस्त 2016 को ब्रुकफील्ड जू, इलिनोइस, अमेरिका में कुकी का निधन हुआ। असल में इसे तोता कहते नहीं हैं, लेकिन यह तोता वर्ग का ही पक्षी है, जिसे कॉकटू कहा जाता है। कुकी एक नर गुलाबी कॉकटू था। कुकी की याद में 2017 में ब्रुकफील्ड जू में एक स्मारक भी स्थापित किया गया। हर 30 जून को कुकी का जन्म दिन और 27 अगस्त को पुण्य तिथि मनाई जाती है।

2018 भारत के नीरज चोपड़ा ने जकार्ता एशियाई खेलों की पुरूष भाला फेंक स्पर्धा में स्वर्ण पदक जीता। 2018 सस्ती उड़ान सेवा देने वाली विमानन कंपनी स्पाइसजेट ने देश की पहली जैव जेट ईंधन से चलने वाली परीक्षण उड़ान का परिचालन किया।

1955 The first Guinness Book of World Records was published. The idea of Guinness Book of World came in 1950. Hughes and his companions got into thinking that who are these birds flying so fast? 1972 Dalip Singh Rana aka Great Khali, Indian professional wrestler and lifter, was born.

1976- Renowned Indian playback singer Mukesh died in Delhi, in Detroit, Michigan, USA.

1976 Major General G Ali Ram, the first woman general of the Indian Armed Forces, was appointed Director of the Military Nursing Service.

1979 British Viceroy of India and first Governor General of independent India Lord Mountbatten (British naval officer and kinsman of the dynasty Louis Francis Albert Victor Nicholas Mountbatten) was assassinated on 27 August 1979. He had gone on holiday with his family. That's when Irish militants blew up their boat with a bomb blast. Mountbatten and two of his grandsons, Nicholas and Paul, were killed in the attack. There is a village named Cliffone in Ireland. Mountbatten used to come every year with his family to spend holidays in this village. Today Ireland is an independent country. The Irish people were then waging an armed struggle for independence. On August 26, Mountbatten came to Cliffone this time like every year and went fishing in the sea. They spread a net for the fish and returned to the village. What used to happen was that the net would remain in the sea overnight and Mountbatten would come in the morning and take out the fishes trapped in the net. On the night of 26–27 August some men from the Irish Republican Army planted explosives in his boat. The next day i.e. on 27 August, at around 11 am, Mountbatten returned to the sea to collect the fish trapped in the net. The boat was in the sea, then at 11:46 there was a huge explosion in the boat. The boat was blown up and 3 people were killed in the attack. The investigation of the accident started. The agencies arrested two people from the Irish Republican Army. Their names were - Thomas McMahon and Francis McGarl. McMahon was sentenced to 19 years in prison. Francis was acquitted for lack of evidence.
