14 ई. में 20 अगस्त को अग्रिप्पा पोस्टुमस को (दिवंगत रोमन सम्राट ऑगस्टस के पोते और उत्तराधिकारी) निर्वासन के दौरान उसके अंगरक्षकों ने मार डाला।

636 यरमौक की लड़ाई में खालिद इब्न अल-वालिद के नेतृत्व में अरब सेना ने बीजेंटाइन साम्राज्य से दूर लेवंत पर नियंत्रण कर लिया। इसे मुस्लिम विजय की पहली महान लहर और अरब के बाहर इस्लाम के तेजी से प्रसार का प्रतीक कहा जाता है। यह पैगंबर मोहम्मद के बाद मुस्लिमों की बड़ी विजय भी मानी जाती है।

917 एचेलूस की लड़ाई में बुल्गारिया के जार शिमोन प्रथम ने बीजेंटाइन सेना को परास्त किया।

1083 हंगरी के प्रथम राजा स्टीफन और उनके बेटे एमेरिक को संत घोषित किया गया इस उपलक्ष्य में हंगरी में 20 अगस्त को राष्ट्रीय दिवस मनाया जाता है।

1191 राजा रिचर्ड प्रथम ने उत्तरी इजरायली शहर अक्को में 3000 मुस्लिम कैदियों की हत्या करवा दी।

1377 फारस और ट्रान्सोक्सियानिया के शासक हुए शाहरुख मिर्जा का जन्म तिमूरिद साम्राज्य के समरकंद में हुआ।

1572 प्रसिद्ध स्पेनिश नाविक और राजनीतिज्ञ, फिलीपींस के प्रथम गवर्नर-जनरल मिगुएल लोपेज डी लेगाजपी का निधन हुआ।

1597 पूर्वी एशिया से डच ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी का पहला जहाज आया।

1625 विख्यात फ्रांसीसी नाटककार और भाषाशास्त्री थॉमस कॉर्नेल का जन्म हुआ।

1641 इंग्लैंड और स्कॉटलैंड के मध्य शांति समझौता हुआ।

1710 स्पेन के उत्तराधिकार के युद्ध में मार्किस डी बे की स्पैनिश-बॉर्बन सेना को ऑस्ट्रियाई कमांडर गुइडो स्टारहेमबर्ग के नेतृत्व वाली सेना ने पराजित किया।

1799 ब्राह्मी लिपि के भाषाविद एवं सम्राट अशोक के शिलालेख पढ़ने वाले प्रथम अंग्रेज विद्वान जेम्स प्रिंसेप का जन्म हुआ।

1828 राजा राम मोहन राय द्वारा स्थापित ब्रह्म समाज के पहले सत्र का आयोजन कलकत्ता में हुआ।

1833 अमेरिकी सैन्य जनरल, अधिवक्ता और राजनीतिज्ञ तथा संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका के 23वें राष्ट्रपति हुए बेंजामिन हैरिसन का जन्म नाॅर्थ बेंड, ओहियो में हुआ।

1896 ब्रिटिश शासित भारत में विख्यात फुटबाल खिलाड़ी और भारतीय फुटबाल टीम के पहले कप्तान हुए गोस्ठ बिहारी पाल का जन्म फरीदपुर जिला (अब बांगलादेश) में हुआ। 

1897 कलकत्ता के प्रेसिडेंसी जनरल हॉस्पिटल में कार्यरत चिकित्सक, अंग्रेज शोधकर्ता रोनाल्ड रॉस ने मलेरिया के कारक एनोफिलीज मच्छर की पहचान की। रोस को 1902 में इस अहम खोज के लिए चिकित्सा का नोबल पुरस्कार दिया गया। 20 अगस्त को दुनिया भर में मच्छर दिवस मनाया जाता है। मच्छर की वजह से मलेरिया, डेंगू, चिकनगुनिया, पीला बुखार समेत कई बीमारियां होती हैं। दिसंबर 2019 में जारी वर्ल्ड मलेरिया रिपोर्ट के मुताबिक 2018 में 22.8 करोड़ लोगों को मलेरिया हुआ। मलेरिया से 2018 में 4.05 लाख लोगों की मौत हुई। रोनाल्ड रोस का जन्म 13 मई 1857 को अल्मोड़ा, उत्तराखंड, भारत में हुआ था। एनोफिलीज, मच्छरों का एक वंश हैं। इसमें लगभग 400 जातियां हैं। जिनमें से 30 से 40 जातियां मलेरिया रोगों का प्रसार करती हैं। सभी मच्छरों की तरह ही इसके जीवन चक्र की चार अवस्थाएं हैं, अंडा, लारवा, प्यूपा एंव व्यस्क। पहली चार अवस्थाएं जल के अंदर पूरी होती हैं। यह आमतौर पर गंदे पानी और गंदी जगहों में फलते-फूलते हैं। इसलिए सलाह दी जाती है कि अपने घरों और अन्य परिसरों के आस-पास गंदा पानी और गंदगी जमा न होने दें। मलेरिया काफी मुश्किलों में डालने वाला बुखार होता है। अब इसका प्रकोप कम है और दवाएं भी भरपूर हैं। लेकिन 1970 से लेकर 1990 के दशक तक हमने देखा है कि प्रायः एक के बाद एक पूरे घर के लोग मलेरियाग्रस्त हो जाते थे और कोई दूसरे को पानी देने की हालत में भी नहीं रहता था। मलेरिया में मुहं का स्वाद कड़वा हो जाता था और कुछ भी खाना-पीना अच्छा नहीं लगता था। इसकी दवा क्लोक्विन भी अत्यंत कड़वी होती थी। यद्यपि उन दिनों सरकारें काफी जनकल्याणकारी थीं। स्वास्थ्य-चिकित्सा विभाग में एक मलेरिया विभाग अलग से होता था जिसमें काफी कार्मिक होते थे। मलेरिया कार्मिक हफ्ते में एक-दो दिन साइकिल से गांवों में आते थे, बुखारग्रस्त लोगों के रक्त के नमूने लेते और जरूरी दवाएं दे जाते थे। यह अगले चक्कर में रक्त के नमूने की जांच का परिणाम बताते थे। गांव-बस्तियों और अन्य जगहों पर डीडीटी पाउडर और तरल कीटनाशक का छिड़काव भी स्वास्थ्य विभाग द्वारा किया जाता था।

1901 विख्यात इतालवी उपन्यासकार और कवि, नोबेल पुरस्कार विजेता साल्वाटोर क्वासिमोडो का जन्म हुआ।

1905 जीन गेब्सर, जर्मन भाषाविद्, कवि और दार्शनिक, मिकियो नारुसे, जापानी फिल्म निर्देशक और पटकथा लेखक तथा जैक टीगार्डन, अमेरिकी गायक-गीतकार और ट्रॉमबॉनिस्ट का जन्म हुआ।

1905 जन नेता सुन यात-सेन, सोंग जियाओरेन और अन्य ने जापान के टोक्यो में एक रिपब्लिकन, क्रांतिकारी संगठन टोंगमेनघुई की स्थापना की।

1911 प्रतिष्ठित अमेरिकी अखबार न्यूयॉर्क टाइम्स के दफ्तर से पहला ऐसा टेलीग्राम भेजा गया था जो पूरी दुनिया में पहुंचा।

1913 फ्रांस के एडोल्फ पेगोड पैराशूट के जरिए विमान से उतरने वाले पहले पाइलट बने।

1915 कर्नाटक के 8वें मुख्यमंत्री डी. देवराज अर्स का जन्म हुआ।

1917 प्रगतिशील काव्यधारा के प्रसिद्ध कवि त्रिलोचन शास्त्री का जन्म हुआ।

1920 विश्व में सर्वप्रथम वाणिज्यिक रेडियो स्टेशन कॉल साइन 8एमके को अमेरिका के डेट्रायट, मिशिगन में डेट्रायट न्यूज समाचार पत्र ने प्रारंभ किया।

1921 केरल के मालाबार में मोपला विद्रोह की शुरुआत हुई। यह विद्रोह क्षेत्रीय जमींदारों और ब्रिटिश सरकार के शोषण और उत्पीड़न के खिलाफ था।

1931 प्रसिद्ध कन्नड़ उपन्यासकार, लेखक, पटकथाकार, चिंतक एस. एल. भैरप्पा का जन्म हुआ।

1940 अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर चर्चित प्रसिद्ध भारतीय पर्यावरणविद राजेंद्र कुमार पचैरी का जन्म हुआ।

1944 श्रीमती इंदिरा प्रिदर्शिनी गांधी एवं फिरोज गांधी के बड़े बेटे और भारत के छठे और सबसे युवा, भारत को विकास और तकीनीकी में आगे ले जाने वाले प्रधानमंत्री हुए राजीव गांधी का जन्म बंबई में हुआ। आमतौर पर राजीव इन्हें बोला जाता है। वैसे वास्तव में राजीवरत्न नाम है। 1944 में इसी दिन प्रसिद्ध भारतीय फिल्म अभिनेत्री कुमारी नाज का जन्म हुआ।

1946 भारत में दाउदी बोहरा मुस्लिम संप्रदाय के प्रमुख धर्मगुरु मुफद्दल सैफुद्दीन का जन्म सूरत, गुजरात में हुआ।

1949 यूरोपीय देश हंगरी में संविधान को अंगीकार किया गया।

1952 भारत के जाने माने चिकित्सा विज्ञानी शिव कुमार सरीन का जन्म हुआ।

1953 फ्रांस की सेना ने मोरक्को के सुल्तान सीदी मोहम्मद बिन यूसुफ को सत्ता से हटाया।

1955 मोरक्को और अल्जीरिया में फ्रांस-विरोधी दंगों में सैकडों लोग मारे गए।

1856 अमेरिका के ओहियो में विल्बरफोर्स यूनिवर्सिटी की स्थापना हुई।

1962 सोवियत संघ ने नोवाया जेमल्या में परमाणु परीक्षण किया।

1965 प्रसिद्ध अमेरिकी सेमिनारियन और नागरिक अधिकार कार्यकर्ता जोनाथन डेनियल का निधन हुआ।

1976 भारत की जानी मानी अंग्रेजी पत्रकार, टीवी एंकर और सीएनबीसी-टीवी18 की प्रबंध संपादक शेरीन भान का जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन बाॅलीवुड के सुपरिचित अभिनेता रणदीप हुड्डा का जन्म रोहतक हरियाणा में हुआ।

1977 अमेरिका के वोयागेर दो अंतरिक्षयान को प्रक्षेपित किया गया।

1979 जनता पार्टी की सरकार के दौरान भारतीय प्रधानमंत्री चौधरी चरण सिंह ने अपने पद से इस्तीफा दिया। चौधरी ने प्रधानमंत्री पद की शपथ लेने के 23 दिन बाद इस्तीफा दिया।

1881 लोकप्रिय दक्षिण भारतीय फिल्म अभिनेत्री तथा माॅडल मधुमिता का जन्म हुआ। 

1983 जानी मानी खूबसूरत फिल्म अभिनेत्री और माॅडल अमृता पुरी का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1986 इंटरनेशनल मास्टर और महिला ग्रैंडमास्टर शतरंज खिलाड़ी तानिया सचदेव का जन्म हुआ।

1987 जाने माने हास्य कलाकार ज़ाकिर खान का जन्म इंदौर, मध्य प्रदेश में हुआ।

1988 प्रसिद्ध अमेरिकी निर्देशक, निर्माता और पटकथा लेखिका, अभिनेत्री, सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता सारा आर लोटफी का जन्म सांता क्लारा में हुआ।

1988 पाकिस्तान के राष्ट्रपति जनरल जिया उल हक का हवाई दुर्घटना में निधन होने के बाद सीनेट के सभापति गुलाम इशहाक खान राष्ट्रपति बने। 1988 में इसी दिन भारत और नेपाल में 6.5 की तीव्रता वाले भूकंप से एक हजार लोगों की मौत हुई। 1988 में इसी दिन अमेरिका के येलोस्टोन नेशनल पार्क में लगी आग से करीब डेढ़ लाख एकड़ यानी करीब 610 किमी क्षेत्र में फैल गई जिससे भारी नुकसान हुआ।

1991 उत्तरी यूरोपीय देश इस्तोनिया ने सोवियत रुस संघ से अलग होने की घोषणा की। 1991 में इसी दिन उड़िया भाषा के प्रसिद्ध साहित्यकार गोपीनाथ मोहंती का निधन हुआ।

1992 जानी मानी टेलीविजन और फिल्म अभिनेत्री, माॅडल और नृत्यांगना ईशा कन्सारा का जन्म अहमदाबाद, गुजरात में हुआ। 1992 में इसी दिन जानी मानी अमेरिकी गायिका-गीतकार और अभिनेत्री, माॅडल डेमी लोवाटो का जन्म हुआ।

1994 अमेरिका ने क्यूबा के शरणार्थियों को आश्रय देने की 28 वर्ष पुरानी अपनी नीति का परित्याग करने की घोषणा की।

1995 भारत में दो रेलों पुरूषोत्तम एक्सप्रेस और कालिंदी एक्सप्रेस के आमने सामने की टक्कर में 350 लोगों की मौत हो गई।

1998 भारतीय टेनिस खिलाड़ी लिएंडर पेस ने पीट संप्रास को हराकर पायलेट पेन अंतर्राष्ट्रीय टेनिस प्रतियोगिता जीती।

2001 विश्वनाथन आनन्द ने स्पेन के अलेक्सेई शिरोव को परास्त कर विलारोडेज शतरंज चैंपियनशिप जीती।

2002 फिलिस्तीन के लोकप्रिय छापामार नेता अबू निदाल मृत पाए गये।

2004 भारत सरकार ने तय किया था कि 20 अगस्त को अक्षय ऊर्जा दिवस मनाया जाएगा। भारत में 2019-20 में 6 हजार मेगावाट अक्षय ऊर्जा क्षमता जोड़ी गई है। नवंबर 2019 तक भारत की अक्षय ऊर्जा क्षमता बढ़कर 84.39 गेगावाट हो गई है। इसमें सबसे ज्यादा 37.28 गेगावाट बिजली पवन ऊर्जा से पैदा हो रही है। अक्षय उर्जा या नवीकरणीय ऊर्जा में वे सारी उर्जा शामिल हैं जो प्रदूषणकारक नहीं हैं तथा जिनके स्रोत का क्षय नहीं होता, या जिनके स्रोत का पुनः-भरण होता रहता है। सौर ऊर्जा, पवन ऊर्जा, जलविद्युत उर्जा, ज्वार-भाटा से प्राप्त उर्जा, बायोगैस, जैव इंधन आदि नवीनीकरणीय उर्जा के कुछ उदाहरण हैं। अंग्रेजी में इसे रिनेवेबल इनर्जी कहते हैं। वर्तमान में ऊर्जा या बिजली उत्पादन के लिए भारी मात्रा में कोयला इस्तेमाल होता है। इसे धरती से खोदने, ढोने और बिजली घरों में फूंकने में बहुत खर्चा होता है और इससे श्रम, पैसा और पर्यावरण की बहुत हानि होती है। इसी दिन 2004 में आर्थिक मामलों की विश्व प्रसिद्ध पत्रिका फोर्ब्स ने विश्व की सर्वाधिक शक्तिशाली महिलाओं की सूची जारी की उनमे अमेरिका की कोंडोलीजा राइस, चीन की वूयी तथा भारत की सोनिया गांधी ने क्रमश प्रथम, द्वितीय एवं तृतीय तीन स्थान प्राप्त किया। 2004 में इसी दिन प्रसिद्ध भारतीय इतिहासकार गंगाराम सम्राट का निधन हुआ।

2008 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय शास्त्रीय संगीतज्ञ अरुणा साई राम को अमेरिका में विशिष्ट सम्मान प्रदान किया गया।

2011 प्रख्यात भारतीय इतिहासकार और शिक्षाविद राम शरण शर्मा का निधन हुआ।

2012 वेनेजुएला की राजधानी काराकस में हुए दंगे में 20 लोग मरे।

2013 उत्तरी काकेशस में रूस की पुलिस की कार्रवाई में नौ उग्रपंथी मारे गए।

2014 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय योग गुरु बी. के. एस. आयंगर का निधन हुआ।

2018 विनेश फोगाट ने इंडोनेशिया, जकार्ता एशियाई खेलों में महिला कुश्ती प्रतियोगिता के 50 किलोग्राम वर्ग में स्वर्ण पदक जीता। यह उपलब्धि हासिल करने वाली वह देश की पहली महिला पहलवान बनीं।

2020 वर्तमान राष्ट्रपति जोय बिडेन ने 2020 डेमोक्रेटिक नेशनल कन्वेंशन में 2020 डेमोक्रेटिक राष्ट्रपति पद के नामांकन के लिए अपना स्वीकृति भाषण दिया।

2021 यूक्रेनी-अमेरिकी कानून के छात्र और अभिनेता, अमेरिकी सबसे लंबे (7 फुट 8.33 इंच) व्यक्ति इगोर वोवकोविंस्की का निधन हुआ।

2022 जम्मू एवं कश्मीर के पूर्व गवर्नर और वर्तमान में मेघालय के राज्यपाल सत्यपाल मलिक ने किसानों के मुद्दे पर केंद्र की मोदी सरकार को आढ़े हाथ लेते हुए कहा कि उनसे इस विषय पर चुप रहने की ताकीद कर कहा गया था कि चुप रहने पर उन्हें राष्ट्रपति बना दिया जायेगा। उत्तर प्रदेश में बागपत के चांदीनगर थाना क्षेत्र के घिटौरा गांव में आयोजित किसान मजदूर सम्मेलन में मलिक ने प्रधानमंत्री नरेन्द्र मोदी पर किसानों के प्रति संवेदनशील नहीं होने आरोप लगाते हुए कहा कि मुझे भी चुप रहने को कहा गया था कि चुप रहोगे तो राष्ट्रपति हो जाओगे। मलिक ने न्यूनतम समर्थन मूल्य (एमएसपी) पर बने कानून को लेकर केन्द्र सरकार पर ईमानदारी नहीं दिखाने का भी आरोप लगाया। उन्होंने कहा कि प्रधानमंत्री में किसानों के प्रति कोई संवेदना नहीं है। मलिक ने कहा, प्रधानमंत्री में किसानों के प्रति कोई संवेदना नहीं है। किसान जो पैदा करता है, उसका दाम घटा रहे है और जो खरीदता है, उसका दाम बढ़ा रहे हैं। ऐसे में किसान की आमदनी दोगुनी कहां से करेगी सरकार? केन्द्र सरकार को देश के किसानों पर कोई रहम नहीं है। मुझे कोई कुत्ते ने नहीं काटा, जो गर्वनर रहते हुए सरकार से पंगा लूं। मलिक ने सरकार को आगाह भी किया कि किसानों को कोई बेचारा न समझे। यह वही किसान हैं, जिन्होंने देश की आजादी में अपनी अहम भूमिका निभाई थी। उन्होंने कहा कि एमएसपी पर सरकार की नीयत साफ नहीं है। सरकार में मैं भी हूं, लेकिन किसानों के हित की आवाज मैं हमेशा उठाता रहूंगा। मलिक ने आगे कहा कि जब किसान 13 महीने तक दिल्ली में आन्दोलन कर रहे थे, तो 700 किसानों की जान गयी, इससे उन्हें बहुत दुःख पहुंचा। देश के उच्च पदों पर बैठे लोग किसी जानवर के मरने पर संवदेना जताते हैं, लेकिन किसानों के मरने पर संवेदना के दो शब्द भी किसी के मुंह से नहीं निकलते हैं। मलिक ने कहा कि चौधरी चरण सिंह कहा करते थे कि अगर किसान कौम एक हो गई तो दिल्ली पर राज किसान का ही रहेगा। किसान मिलकर लड़ाई लड़े, देश पर राज किसानों का ही होगा। किसानों के पास खेती, जमीन और सेना की भर्ती ही तो थी, अब ये भी हाथ से चली गई।

2022 हैदराबाद में जाने माने कॉमेडियन मुनव्वर फारुकी के शो को बाधित करने की कोशिश करने के आरोप में भारतीय जनता युवा मोर्चा के करीब 50 कार्यकर्ताओं को पुलिस ने 20 अगस्त की शाम गिरफ्तार कर लिया। कार्यकर्ताओं ने शो के स्थल शिल्पा कला वेदिका की ओर जाने की कोशिश की, लेकिन पुलिसकर्मियों ने उन्हें रोक दिया। नारेबाजी करते हुए प्रदर्शनकारियों ने पुलिस घेरा तोड़ने और कार्यक्रम स्थल में घुसने की कोशिश की। पुलिस ने उनके प्रयासों को विफल कर दिया। प्रदर्शनकारियों को एक पुलिस वाहन से गाचीबोवली पुलिस स्टेशन ले जाया गया। माधापुर के सूचना प्रौद्योगिकी केंद्र में सभागार के सामने व्यस्त यातायात चौक पर विरोध प्रदर्शन से तनाव पैदा हो गया। पुलिस की कड़ी सुरक्षा के बीच मुनव्वर का डोंगरी टू नोव्हेयर शो शुरू हुआ। शो के समय काफी पहले बड़ी संख्या में लोगों को सभागार के बाहर कतार में देखा गया। पुलिस ने आयोजकों को निर्धारित समय से एक घंटे पहले (शाम 6 बजे) कार्यक्रम शुरू करने की सलाह दी। भाजपा और कुछ अन्य दक्षिणपंथी समूहों द्वारा इसे बाधित करने की धमकी के मद्देनजर साइबराबाद पुलिस ने शो के लिए सुरक्षा के कड़े बंदोबस्त किए। शिल्पा कला वेदिका के आसपास करीब 500 पुलिसकर्मी तैनात थे और टिकट धारकों की पूरी तलाशी कर रहे थे। एक पुलिस उप महानिरीक्षक और दो पुलिस उपायुक्त समेत वरिष्ठ अधिकारी सुरक्षा की निगरानी कर रहे थे। किसी अप्रिय घटना को रोकने के लिए पुलिस कार्यक्रम स्थल और आसपास की व्यस्त सड़कों पर कड़ी निगरानी रखे हुए है। पुलिस शो के लिए ऑनलाइन टिकट खरीदने वालों पर भी नजर रख रही है क्योंकि भाजपा के एक नेता ने दावा किया कि पार्टी के कुछ समर्थकों ने टिकट खरीद लिए हैं और वे शो के दौरान विरोध प्रदर्शन करेंगे।

In the 636 Battle of Yarmouk, Arab forces led by Khalid ibn al-Walid wrested control of the Levant away from the Byzantine Empire. Around 50 Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha workers were arrested by the police on the evening of 20 August for trying to disrupt the show of well-known comedian Munawar Farooqui in 2022 Hyderabad. Around 500 police personnel were deployed around Shilpa Kala Vedika and were conducting thorough frisking of ticket holders. Senior officers including a Deputy Inspector General of Police and two Deputy Commissioners of Police were monitoring the security. To prevent any untoward incident, the police are keeping a strict vigil on the venue and the busy roads around it. The police are also keeping an eye on those who bought tickets online for the show as a BJP leader claimed that some supporters of the party have bought tickets and will protest during the show.
