1535 शिमाजु योशिहिरो नामक प्रसिद्ध जापानी जनरल का जन्म हुआ।

1165 फ्रांस के फिलिप द्वितीय का जन्म हुआ।

1689 स्कॉटलैंड में डंकल्ड का युद्ध हुआ। जिसमें स्कॉटलैंड के अपदस्थ राजा जेम्स सप्तम के समर्थक, लड़ाके जैकबाइट कबीले डंकल्ड स्कॉटलैंड के विलियम ऑफ ऑरेंज के समर्थक एक दूसरे से भिड़ गये।

1703 तुर्की की सेना ने सुल्तान मुस्तफा द्वितीय को सत्ता से अपदस्थ किया, इससे सुल्तानों की शक्ति में कमी आई।

1718 तुर्की और वेनिस (इटली) के बीच शांति संधि हुई।

1772 स्वीडन में राजा गुस्ताव तृतीय ने 50 वर्ष पुराने संसद के शासन को समाप्त कर अपनी तानाशाही स्थापित की।

1790 जनरल मेडोस के नेतृत्व में ब्रिटिश सेना ने तमिलनाडु के डिंडिगुल क्षेत्र पर कब्जा किया।

1810 फ्रांस के मार्शल जीन बैप्टिस्ट बेर्नडॉट स्वीडन के क्राउन प्रिंस ऑफ इस्टेट्स के समर्थन से चुने गये।

1831 शोषण, दमन और उत्पीड़न के खिलाफ साउथेम्प्टन काउंटी, वर्जीनिया, अमेरिका में एक दास विद्रोह का नेतृत्व नेट टर्नर ने किया। इसे धनिकों और सरकारी पुलिस, फौज ने लगभग 48 घंटे में दमन कर कुचल दिया।

1842 तस्मानिया के शहर होबर्ट की स्थापना हुई।

1871 भारत के प्रसिद्ध सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता गोपाल कृष्ण देवधर का जन्म हुआ।

1886 विश्व विख्यात ब्रिटिश लेखिका रुथ मैनिंग सैंडर्स का जन्म इंग्लैंड के स्वांसी में हुआ। रूथ मैनिंग-सैंडर्स को बच्चों की किताबों की एक बड़ी श्रृंखला के लिए जाना जाता है, जिसके लिए उन्होंने दुनिया भर में परियों की कहानियों का संकलन कर प्रकाशित किया। उनकी 90 से अधिक किताबें छपीं, जिनके दुनिया भर में अनुवाद प्रकाशित हुए।

1889 द्वितीय विश्व युद्ध के दौरान वरिष्ठ ब्रिटिश सेना अधिकारी रहे रिचर्ड ओ’कोन्नोर का जन्म श्रीनगर में हुआ।

1908 जानी मानी ब्रिटिश लेखिका मैरी मारग्रेट कायी का जन्म शिमला, हिमाचल प्रदेश में हुआ।

1910 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय चित्रकार नारायण श्रीधर बेंद्रे का जन्म हुआ।

1911 विश्व विख्यात इतालवी चित्रकार लियोनार्दो द विंची की प्रसिद्ध चित्र कृति मोना लिसा को लुमव्रे से एक एमुजियम कर्मचारी ने चुरा लिया इसे दो साल बाद तक बरामद नहीं किया जा सका।

1915 पहले विश्व युद्ध के दौरान इटली ने तुर्की के खिलाफ युद्ध की घोषणा की। इसी दिन 1915 में प्रख्यात भारतीय उर्दू अफसानानिगार/कहानीकार इस्मत चुगताई का जन्म हुआ।

1922 अमेरिकी खजाना खोजी और समुद्री विरासत संग्रहालय के संस्थापक मेल फिशर का जन्म हुआ।

1927 प्रसिद्ध स्वतंत्रता सेनानी, समाजवादी नेता और उत्तर प्रदेश, ओडिशा और पश्चिम बंगाल के राज्यपाल हुए बी सत्य नारायण रेड्डी का जन्म हुआ।

1931 प्रसिद्ध शास्त्रीय गायक विष्णु दिगंबर पलुस्कर का निधन हुआ।

1934 महाराष्ट्र में भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के प्रभावशाली राजनीतिज्ञ सुधाकरराव नाइक का जन्म हुआ।

1957 सोवियत संघ ने विश्व की प्रथम अंतरमहाद्वीपीय बैलिस्टिक मिसाइल आर-7 सेमेयोर्का का परीक्षण किया।

1959 राष्ट्रपति ड्वाइट डी. आइजनहावर ने हवाई को 50वां अमेरिकी राज्य बनाने वाले एक कार्यकारी आदेश पर हस्ताक्षर किये।

1961 जाने माने भारतीय क्रिकेटर वीबी चंद्रशेखर का जन्म मद्रास में हुआ।

1962 हिंदी सहित तमिल, तेलुगू, कन्नड़ आदि दक्षिण भारतीय भाषाओं की प्रमुख फिल्म अभिनेत्री, माॅडल, कारोबारी, फिल्म निर्मात्री और राजनीतिक नेत्री राधिका शरतकुमार का जन्म कोलंबो, श्रीलंका में हुआ। 

1963 बुद्ध मंदिर पैगोडा में छापे के विरोध में जनता लामबंद हुई तो दक्षिण वियतनाम में मार्शल लॉ लगाया गया।

1965 यूरोपीय देश रोमानिया में संविधान को अंगीकार किया गया। 1965 में इसी दिन अमेरिका ने जेमिनी-5 स्पेसक्राफ्ट लॉन्च किया था। गॉर्डन कूपर और पीट कॉनरेड इस अंतरिक्ष यान में सवार थे। दोनों ने 8 दिन अंतरिक्ष में बिताए जो तब अंतरिक्ष में सबसे ज्यादा समय रहने का रिकॉर्ड था। किसी भी स्पेसक्राफ्ट को धरती से चांद तक जाने और वापस आने में करीब 8 दिन का समय लगता था। अमेरिकी अंतरिक्ष एजेंसी नासा यह जांचना चाहती थी कि उसकी नई बनाई बैटरी अंतरिक्ष यान को 8 दिन तक ऊर्जा की आपूर्ति कर पाती है या नहीं।

1968 चेकोस्लोवाकिया के स्थानीय रेडियो से पराग्वे पर सोवियत संघ के नेतृत्व में हमले की घोषणा की गई।

1969 एक ऑस्ट्रेलियाई पर्यटक ने तुर्की की अल-अक्सा मस्जिद को आग लगा दी।

1972 भारतीय संसद ने वन्यजीव संरक्षण अधिनियम पारित किया।

1975 विभिन्न टेलीविजन चैनलों पर तमाम शो की होस्ट, प्रस्तुतकर्ता, वीजे, माॅडल और अभिनेत्री मिनी माथुर का जन्म दिल्ली में हुआ।

1978 विख्यात भारतीय क्रिकेटर वीनू मांकड़ का निधन हुआ। 1978 में इसी दिन जानी मानी भारतीय फिल्म अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल भूमिका चावला का जन्म हुआ।

1978 जानी मानी संगीत वीडियो गीत गायिका, स्टेज परफाॅर्मर एवं माॅडल कनिका कपूर का जन्म लखनऊ में हुआ।

1979 अरुणाचल प्रदेश के मुख्यमंत्री हुए पेमा खांडू का जन्म हुआ।

1981 प्रसिद्ध गांधीवादी स्वतंत्रता सेनानी, शिक्षाविद, पत्रकार और लेखक काका साहब कालेलकर का निधन हुआ।

1982 दक्षिण अफ्रीकी देश स्वाजीलैंड में लंबे समय तक राज करने वाले राजा सोभूजा द्वितीय का निधन 21 अगस्त 1982 को हुआ था। उनका जन्म 22 जुलाई 1899 को हुआ था। वे अपने पद पर सर्वाधिक समय तक बने रहने वाले शासक बने। इसी दिन जाने माने भारतीय रेडियो जाॅकी, अभिनेता, फिल्म निर्देशक, निर्माता पुरनजीत दासगुप्ता यानी मंत्रा का जन्म इंदौर में हुआ।

1983 फिलीपींस के विपक्षी नेता बेनिग्रो एस एक्विनो के स्वैच्छिक निर्वासन के उपरांत वापसी हुई लेकिन फिलीपींस की भूमि पर कदम रखते ही गोली मारकर उनकी हत्या कर दी गई।

1885 जाने माने पाश्र्व गायक हर्षित सक्सेना का जन्म लखनऊ में हुआ।

1986 कैमरुन में ज्वालामुखी विस्फोट से निकली जहरीली गैस के कारण लगभग हजारों लोगों की मौत हो गई। 1986 में इसी दिन एक सौ और दो सौ मीटर की दौड़ विश्व रिकॉर्ड बनाने वाले एथलीट यूसैन बोल्ट का जमैका में जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन 1986 में हिंदी सहित विभिन्न दक्षिण भारतीय भाषाई फिल्मों की अभिनेत्री, टेलीविजन शो कलाकार, विज्ञापन फिल्मों की अभिनेत्री, माॅडल, नृत्यांगना सना खान का जन्म बंबई में हुआ। 1986 में इसी दिन कैमरून में ज्वालामुखीय झील न्योस से कार्बन डाइऑक्साइड गैस का विस्फोट हुआ, जिससे 20 किलोमीटर (12 मील) के दायरे में 1,800 लोग मारे गए।

1988 केसी ली के नाम से मशहूर अमेरिकी देशी गायिका, मंच पर्फामर, माॅडल और अभिनेत्री केसी ली मुस्ग्रेव्स का गोल्डन, टेक्सास में जन्म हुआ। हैं। केसी छह ग्रैमी अवॉर्ड, सात कंट्री म्यूजिक एसोसिएशन अवॉर्ड और तीन एकेडमी ऑफ कंट्री म्यूजिक अवॉर्ड सहित अनेक सम्मान, पुरस्कार प्राप्त कर चुकी हैं। इसी दिन भारत नेपाल सीमा पर आये तीव्र भूकंप से एक हजार लोगों की मौत हुई।

1991 सोवियत संघ में राष्ट्रपति मिखाइल गोर्बाचोव को उपराष्ट्रपति गेन्नादि यानायेव ने अपदस्थ कर मास्को में कर्फ्यू लगाया और खुद को राष्ट्रपति घोषित कर दिया। लेकिन यह क्रांति विफल रही एवं प्रधानमंत्री बोरिस येल्तसिन ने गोर्बाचोव को पुनः पदस्थ किया। 1991 में इसी दिन लातविया ने संयुक्त सोवियत संघ रूस से अलग होने की घोषणा की।

1991 21 अगस्त को पूरी दुनिया में वर्ल्ड सीनियर सिटीजन डे या वरिष्ठ नागरिक दिवस मनाया जाता है। इस दिन को मनाने की शुरुआत अमेरिका के पूर्व राष्ट्रपति रोनाल्ड रीगन ने की थी। साल 1991 में पहली बार इस दिन को मनाया गया। इस दिन को मनानेका उद्देश्य समाज को बुजुर्ग लोगों के बारे में जागरूक करना है। इस बावत 19 अगस्त 1988 को 5847 की घोषणा पर रीगन ने हस्ताक्षर किए थे। रोनाल्ड रीगन ने अपने अध्यक्षीय वक्तव्य में कहा था, उन्होंने अपने पूरे जीवन में जो कुछ भी हासिल किया है और जो कुछ वे अभी भी कर रहे हैं, उसके लिए हम अपने वरिष्ठ नागरिकों के प्रति आभार व्यक्त करते हैं और उनका हार्दिक अभिनंदन करते हैं। हम यह सुनिश्चित करके अपनी कृतज्ञता और प्रशंसा बेहतर ढंग से दिखा सकते हैं कि हमारे समुदाय अच्छे स्थान हैं। आयु और परिपक्वता, ऐसे स्थान जहां वृद्ध लोग यथासंभव भाग ले सकते हैं और स्वतंत्रता और सम्मान का जीवन जीने के लिए आवश्यक प्रोत्साहन, स्वीकृति, समर्थन और सेवाएं पा सकते हैं।

1993 राष्ट्रपति बोरिस येल्तसिन ने रूसी संसद को भंग किया।

1993 अंतरिक्ष में भेजे गये मार्स आब्र्जवर से अमेरिकी अंतरिक्ष एजेंसी नासा का संपर्क भंग हुआ।

1995 प्रख्यात भारतीय खगोलविज्ञानी, भौतिक शास्त्री सुब्रह्मण्यम चंद्रशेखर का निधन हुआ।

1997 पूर्वी चीन में चक्रवाती तूफान विन्नी से 140 लोगों की मौत हुई और तीन हजार लोग घायल हुए।

2000 दक्षिण-पूर्वी आर्देक प्रांत में लगी आग से 1600 हेक्टेयर क्षेत्र में खड़े वन नष्ट हुए और रूसी पनडुब्बी के सभी 118 सदस्यों के मारे जाने की पुष्टि सामने आई। इसी दिन अमेरिकी गोल्फर टाइगर वुड्स ने 82वीं पीजीए चैंपियनशिप जीती और 1953 में बेन होगन के बाद जीतने वाले पहले गोल्फर बने।

2003 संयुक्त राष्ट्र महासचिव कोफी अन्नान ने इराक में संयुक्त शांति सेना भेजने का प्रस्ताव खारिज किया।

2005 बांग्लादेश और भारत की सीमा सुरक्षा बल के जवानों के बीच संघर्ष विराम का समझौता हुआ। 2005 में इसी दिन जर्मनी के कोलोन में विश्व युवा दिवस 2005 के समापन पर पोप बेनेडिक्ट सोलहवें को देखने, सुनने के लिए करीब 800,000 लोग एकत्र हुए।

2006 इराक के अपदस्थ राष्ट्रपति सद्दाम हुसैन ने नरसंहार ट्रायल में भाग लेने से इन्कार किया। 2006 में इसी दिन भारत रत्न से सम्मानित प्रख्यात शहनाई वादक उस्ताद बिस्मिल्ला खां का निधन हुआ।

2007 प्रसिद्ध उर्दू कथाकार, लेखिका कुर्रतुलऐन हैदर का निधन हुआ।

2008 श्रीनगर और पाक अधीकृत कश्मीर की राजधानी मुजफ्फराबाद के बीच चलने वाली कारवां-ए-अमन बस सेवा पुनः प्रारम्भ हुई। इसी दिन चंद्र मिशन पर भारत ने नासा से समझौता किया।

2009 भारतीय नौसेना का लड़ाकू विमान सी हेरियर गोवा से उड़ान भरने के पश्चात् अरब सागर में दुर्घटनाग्रस्त हो गया। विमान चालक ले. कमाण्डर सौरभ सक्सेना का निधन हुआ।

2010 विश्व विख्यात स्काॅटिश चित्रकार विंसेंट वाॅन गॉग की एक कीमती पेंटिंग पोप्पी फ्लावर्स मिस्र की राजधानी काहिरा स्थित मोहम्मद महमूद खलील कला संग्रहालय से चुरा ली गई, बाद में यह काहिरा हवाई अड्डे पर मिली।

2012 अफ्रीकी देश डेमोक्रेटिक रिपब्लिक ऑफ कांगो में इबोला वायरस के संक्रमण से 20 लोगों की जानें गई।

2013 मलेशिया में चिन स्वी मंदिर के पास बस के दुर्घटनाग्रस्त होने से 37 लोग मारे गए और 16 घायल लोग हुए। 2013 में इसी दिन सीरियाई गृह युद्ध में सरकारी सुरक्षा बलों के रॉकेट हमले में करीब 281 लोग मारे गये।

2017 कोसोवो में संयुक्त राष्ट्र मिशन प्रशासन के पहले कोसोवन प्रधानमंत्री बजराम रेक्सहेपी का निधन हुआ।

2014 फिलिस्तीन के राफा में इजरायली हवाई हमले में हमास के तीन शीर्ष कमांडर मारे गए।

2018 स्टीफन कार्ल स्टीफनसन, आइसलैंडिक अभिनेता और गायक का निधन हुआ।

2019 सेल्सो पिना, मैक्सिकन गायक, संगीतकार, अरेंजर और अकॉर्डियनिस्ट का निधन हुआ।
