1817 राष्ट्रगान जन गण मन के रचयिता रविंद्रनाथ ठाकुर के पिता प्रख्यात विद्वान् और धार्मिक नेता देवेंद्रनाथ ठाकुर का जन्म हुआ।

1858 कोवेंट गार्डन लंदन में रॉयल इटालियन ओपेरा खुला।

1859 विख्यात आविष्कारक और शोधकर्ता पियरे क्यूरी का जन्म हुआ। 1903 में इन्हें मैडम क्यूरी के साथ भौतिकी का नोबल पुरस्कार दिया गया था। मैडम क्यूरी इनकी पत्नी थीं और दोनों ने मिलकर रेडियम की खोज की थी। इसके अलावा अन्य कई अहम खोजें और आविष्कार इस दंपत्ति ने किये।

1891 हॉलैंड में फिलिप्स एंड कंपनी शुरु हुई।

1892 भारतीय राजनीतिज्ञ तथा मध्य प्रदेश के राज्यपाल हुए हरि विनायक पाटस्कर का जन्म हुआ।

1905 अमेरिका के नवादा में लास वेगास नगर की स्थापना हुई।

1907 क्रांतिकारी सुखदेव थापर का जन्म हुआ। भगत सिंह के साथ राजगुरु और सुखदेव को 23 मार्च 1931 को फांसी की सजा दी गई थी।

1918 अमेरिका में पहली हवाई डाक सेवा की शुरुआत हुई।

1919 विन्निपेग जनरल स्ट्राइक कही गई आम हड़ताल में सार्वजनिक और निजी क्षेत्र के लाखों कामगार कनाडा के विन्निपेग में एकत्र हुए।

1922 लगभग 500 बाॅलीवुड फिल्मों में अपने शानदार अभिनय से लोगों को अपना दीवाना बना लेने वाले, अभिनेता, पटकथा लेखक और निर्देशक नज़ीर हुसैन या नासिर हुसैन का जन्म गांव उसिया, गाजीपुर, उत्तर प्रदेश में हुआ। इसी दिन प्रख्यात जापानी लेखिका और बौद्ध नन जकूचो सतोची का जन्म हुआ।

1925 पहला अरेबिक कम्यूनिस्ट अखबार अल इंसानिया शुरू किया गया। इसी दिन 1926 में भारतीय नौसेना के चर्चित जांबाज सिपाही महेंद्रनाथ मुल्ला का जन्म हुआ।

1927 विख्यात तिब्बती पारंपरिक चिकित्सक, लंबे समय तिब्बती धर्म गुरु दलाई लामा की सेवा में रहे, भारत सरकार का पद्मश्री सम्मान प्राप्त येशी धोंडेन का जन्म शनान, चीन में हुआ।

1928 विश्व भर में लोकप्रिय कार्टून चरित्र मिकी माउस को प्रथम बार अमेरिकी एनिमेटेड लघु-फिल्म प्लेन क्रेजी में प्रदर्शित किया गया, वॉल्ट डिजनी स्टूडियो द्वारा रिलीज यह एक मूक यानी बिना आवाज की फिल्म थी फिर अगले ही साल इसे फिर से 17 मार्च, 1929 को एक आवाज के साथ कार्टून के रूप में रिलीज किया गया।

1930 दुनिया की पहली एयर होस्टेस ऐलीन चर्च ने अमेरिका आॅकलैंड-शिकागो फ्लाइट में उड़ान भरी। यह प्रशिक्षित नर्स भी थीं। इनका जन्म 22 सितंबर 1904 को क्रेस्को, लोवा, अमेरिका में हुआ।

1935 मास्को मेट्रो स्टेशन लोगों के लिए खोला गया।

1940 मैकडॉनल्ड्स की शुरुआत। रिचर्ड और मौरिस मैकडॉनल्ड्स नाम के दो भाइयों ने 15 मई 1940 को अमेरिका के कैलिफोर्निया के सैन बर्नार्डीनो में छोटा सा रेस्तरां खोला था। आज वही छोटी रेस्तरां शुरुआत दुनिया की सबसे बड़ी फास्ट फूड चेन बन चुका है। 100 से ज्यादा देशों में इसके 35,000 से ज्यादा आउटलेट्स हैं। 

1948 ऑस्ट्रेलिया ने एसेक्स के खिलाफ क्रिकेट मैच में एक दिन में 721 रन बनाने का विश्व रिकॉर्ड बनाया। इसी दिन अरब देशों ने इजराइल पर हमला किया। एक दिन पहले ही इजराइल ने अपने स्वतंत्र होने की घोषणा की थी।

1957 ब्रिटेन के आपूर्ति मंत्रालय ने जानकारी दी कि प्रशांत महासागर में किए गए श्रृखंलाबद्ध परीक्षणों के अंतर्गत पहले हाइड्रोजन बम का परीक्षण किया गया।

1958 प्रसिद्ध इतिहासकार यदुनाथ सरकार का निधन हुआ। 1958 में इसी दिन सोवियत संघ ने स्पूतनिक-3 लॉंच किया।

1962 कर्नाटक के जाने माने राजनेता, कई सरकारों में मंत्री रहे वर्तमान भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस पार्टी के कर्नाटक प्रदेश अध्यक्ष डोड्डाहल्ली केंपागोड़ा शिवकुमार का जन्म हुआ।

1965 खूबसूरत, बोल्ड, लोकप्रिय उड़िया फिल्म अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल एवं भारतीय जनता पार्टी की नेता अपराजिता मोहंती का जन्म संबलपुर में हुआ।

1967 बॉलीवुड की जानी-मानी, खूबसूरत, बोल्ड फिल्म अभिनेत्री और माॅडल माधुरी दिक्षित का जन्म हुआ था। एक डाॅक्टर से विवाह कर अमेरिका बस चुकी इनका नाम अब माधुरी दीक्षित नेने है।

1970 राष्ट्रपति रिचर्ड ने निक्सन ब्रिगेडियर जनरल पद पर अमेरिकी सेना में अन्ना मेए हेसे को पदोन्नत किया। इस पद पर पहली बार महिला की नियुक्ति हुई। इसके कुछ ही देर बाद एलिजाबेथ पी. होइसिंगटन को भी इसी पद पर नियुक्त किया गया।

1974 इजरायल के एक स्कूल में बंधक बनाईं गई 16 किशोरियों की मौत हो गई. साथ में तीन फलस्तीनी भी मारे गए।

1985 तेलुगू भाषा की लोकप्रिय टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री, माॅडल और टीवी शो प्रस्तोता अनुसुइया भारद्वाज का जन्म हैदराबाद, आंध्र प्रदेश में हुआ।

1987 खूबसूरत, बोल्ड जानी मानी टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री और माॅडल परिधि शर्मा का जन्म इंदौर, मध्य प्रदेश में हुआ।

1988 तेलुगू सिनेमा के लोकप्रिय अभिनेता तथा माॅडल राम पोथिनेनी का जन्म हैदराबाद में हुआ। इसी दिन सोवियत संघ ने अफगानिस्तान से अपने एक लाख 15 हजार सैनिकों को वापस बुलाना शुरू किया।

1989 जानी मानी, लोकप्रिय, खूबसूरत, बोल्ड मलयालम एवं तमिल फिल्म अभिनेत्री तथा माॅडल मित्रा कुरियन का जन्म पेरुंबादूर में हुआ।

1990 विश्व विख्यात चित्रकार विंसेंट वान गॉग के एक पोर्ट्रेट को नीलामी कंपनी क्रिस्टी ने न्यूयॉर्क में कुल 82.5 मिलियन डालर में बेचा। यह दुनिया की सबसे महंगी चित्रकृति बनी। इसी दिन अमेरिका की खुफिया एजेंसी एफबीआई की टाॅप टेन मोस्ट वांटेड सूची में शामिल अपनी पत्नी के हत्यारे भद्रेशकुमार चेतनभाई पटेल का जन्म वीरमगांव, गुजरात में हुआ।

1991 श्रीमती एडिथ क्रेसन फ्रांस की पहली महिला प्रधानमंत्री बनीं।

1993 संयुक्त राष्ट्र ने 15 मई को अंतरराष्ट्रीय परिवार दिवस के रूप में मनाने का फैसला किया। इसका उद्देश्य परिवारों का महत्व, परिवारों के जरिये मानवता, सामाजिक और आर्थिक विकास इत्यादि को रेखांकित करना और परिवारों में एकता, एक दूसरे का सम्मान बढ़ाने आदि के प्रति जनजागरूकता बढ़ाना था। हर साल यह दिवस एक खास थीम के साथ मनाया जाता है। 2023 की थीम परिवार और जनसांख्यिकीय परिवर्तन है। 1993 में इसी दिन भारत के प्रथम आर्मी कमाडर इन चीफ के.एम.करिअप्पा का निधन हुआ।

1995 चीन ने लोप नोर, पीआरसी में परमाणु परीक्षण किया। 1995 में इसी दिन एलीसन हारग्रीब्स बिना आक्सिजन सिलेंडर के एवरेस्ट की चोटी पर पहुँचने वाली पहली महिला बनीं।

1999 कुवैती सरकार ने महिलाओं को संसदीय चुनावों में मतदान करने का अधिकार दिया।

2001 इटली में दक्षिणपंथी गठबंधन को बहुमत।

2002 संयुक्त राष्ट्र सुरक्षा परिषद ने इराक पर प्रतिबंध लगाने का अनुमोदन किया।

2003 इराक युद्ध में अमेरिकी सेनाओं के कमांडर टामी फ्रैक्स के विरुद्ध ब्रुसेल्स की अदालत में युद्ध सम्बन्धी मुकदमा दायर हुआ। 2003 में इसी दिन अमेरिका की लोकप्रिय गायिका और माॅडल, मंच परफार्मर जून कार्टर का निधन हुआ।

2004 आर्सेनल फुटबॉल क्लब इंग्लिश प्रीमियर लीग में एक भी मैच हारे बिना चैंपियन बनने वाली पहली टीम बनी।

2005 बीस साल के बाद कनाडा में भारत का विमान उतरा।

2008 श्रीलंका सरकार ने आतंकवादी संगठन लिट्टे पर प्रतिबन्ध दो साल के लिए बढ़ाया। इसी दिन 2008 में भारतीय मूल की मंजूला सूद ब्रिटेन में मेयर बनने वाली पहली एशियाई महिला बनीं। इसी दिन 2008 में कैलिफोर्निया समलैंगिक विवाह को वैध घोषित करने वाला मैसाच्युसेट्स के बाद अमेरिका का दूसरा प्रांत बना।

2010 राजस्थान के पूर्व मुख्यमंत्री व बाद में उपराष्ट्रपति हुए भैरोंसिंह शेखावत का निधन हुआ।

2013 मशहूर चित्रकार गेर्हार्ड रिक्टर की एक पेंटिंग 37.1 मिलियन अमेरिकी डॉलर में नीलाम, किसी भी कलाकार के जीवित रहते यह उसकी कृति की नीलामी की सबसे बड़ी कीमत है।

2018 आंध्र प्रदेश के गोदावरी में नदी में नाव डूबने से 40 लोगों की मौत हुई।
