1607 जेम्स टाउन, वर्जीनिया नाम से उत्तरी अमेरिका में एडवर्ड मारिया विंगफील्ड, क्रिस्टोफरनपोर्ट और जॉन स्मिथ के नेतृत्व में अंग्रेजों ने अपनी पहली स्थायी कालोनी स्थापित की, जेम्स फोर्ट नाम से किला बनाया। मालूम हो कि 1492 में कोलंबस के अमेरिका खोज लेने के बाद से स्पेन, इटली आदि तमाम देशों ने अमेरिका की धरती पर धाबा बोल दिया और स्थानीय निवासियों को तहस-नहस करके अपना राज कायम किया था।

1610 फ्रांस में हेनरी चतुर्थ की हत्या के बाद लुइस तेरहवें फ्रांस के सम्राट बने।

1657 शिवाजी के ज्येष्ठ पुत्र और उत्तराधिकारी संभाजी का जन्म हुआ।

1702 नीदरलैंड और इंग्लैंड ने स्पेन और फ्रांस के खिलाफ युद्ध की घोषणा की।

1796 ब्रिटेन के चिकित्सा विज्ञानी एडवर्ड जेनर ने स्मॉल पॉक्स यानी चेचक की वैक्सीन की पहली खुराक पेश की।

1811 चैक गणराज्य पैराग्वे को स्पेन से आजादी मिली।

1879 प्रख्यात वैज्ञानिक तथा आविष्कारक थॉमस एल्वा एडिसन यूरोप की एडिसन टेलीफोन कंपनी से जुड़े।

1883 हिंदुस्तान के प्रसिद्ध न्यायविद, अधिवक्ता और शिक्षाशास्त्री अल्लादि कृष्णास्वामी अय्यर का जन्म हुआ।

1892 प्रसिद्ध स्वतंत्रता सेनानी और राजनीतिक कार्यकर्ता अरुण चन्द्र गुहा का जन्म हुआ।

1908 पहली बार किसी व्यक्ति ने हवाई जहाज में उड़ान भरी।

1914 अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति वुडरो विल्सन ने मातृ दिवस मनाने की घोषणा पर हस्ताक्षर किए। ग्राफटन वेस्ट वर्जिनिया में एना जार्विस ने इसकी शुरुआत की थी। तब से माताओं के सम्मान के लिए यह दिन मनाया जाता है। इसे प्रतिवर्ष मई के दूसरे रविवार को दुनिया भर में मनाते हैं।

1921 अमेरिकी न्यायाधीश फ्लोरेंस एलन मौत की सजा देने वाली पहली महिला बनी। गैंगस्टर फ्रैंक मोटो पर दो पुरुषों की हत्या का आरोप लगाया गया था, इसलिए सजा के रूप में उन्हें एलन द्वारा इलेक्ट्रिक कुर्सी के जरिये फांसी की सजा सुनाई गई थी। वह राज्य सुप्रीम कोर्ट में सेवा देने वाली पहली महिला भी थीं।

1922 सन 1992 में दिवालिया हुई पाकिस्तान, अरब देशों में काम कर रही प्रमुख बैंक बैंक आॅफ क्रेडिट काॅमर्स इंटरनेशल के संस्थापक, पाकिस्तानी बैंकर, कारोबारी आगा हसन अबेदी का जन्म लखनऊ में हुआ।

1923 बेहतरीन फिल्मों के लिए सुप्रसिद्ध भारतीय फिल्म निर्माता व निर्देशक मृणाल सेन का जन्म हुआ। 1923 में इसी दिन स्वतंत्रता सेनानी एवं भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के अध्यक्ष हुए एन.जी.चंदावरकर का निधन हुआ।

1941 36,000 परशियन यहूदी को गिरफ्तार किया गया।

1943 ब्रिटिश शासन में जाने माने जमींदार, सरकारी ठेकेदार, स्वतंत्रता संग्राम सेनानी एवं राजनेता अल्ला बख्श का निधन हुआ।

1944 ब्रिटिश सैनिकों ने नागालैंड की वर्तमान राजधानी कोहिमा पर कब्जा किया।

1948 विश्व विख्यात ब्रिटिश क्रिकेट खिलाड़ी बाॅव वूल्मर का जन्म भारत के कानपुर में हुआ। इसी दिन दुनिया भर से भगाए गये यहूदियों के देश इजराइल ने ब्रिटेन से स्वतंत्रता की घोषणा की। पहले इजराइल की जगह तुर्की का ओटोमान साम्राज्य था, प्रथम विश्वयुद्ध में तुर्की की हार के बाद इस इलाके में ब्रिटेन का कब्जा हो गया। ब्रिटेन उस समय एक बड़ी शक्ति था और दूसरे विश्वयुद्ध तक ये इलाका ब्रिटेन के कब्जे में ही रहा। दूसरे विश्वयुद्ध में अमेरिका और सोवियत संघ दो बड़ी ताकत बनकर उभरे। ब्रिटेन को इस युद्ध में काफी नुकसान उठाना पड़ा। 1945 में ब्रिटेन ने यह क्षेत्र संयुक्त राष्ट्र को सौंप दिया। 1947 में संयुक्त राष्ट्र ने इस इलाके को दो हिस्सों में बांट दिया। एक अरब राज्य और एक इजराइल। यरुशलम शहर को अंतरराष्ट्रीय सरकार के प्रबंधन के अंतर्गत रखा गया। अगले ही साल इजराइल ने अपनी आजादी का ऐलान किया। इसी के साथ आज ही के दिन 1948 में दुनिया के एक शक्तिशाली देश का गठन हुआ। इजराइल द्वारा अपनी आजादी के ऐलान बाद अरब देशों की संयुक्त सेनाओं ने उस पर हमला कर दिया। करीब एक साल तक ये लड़ाई चली रही। युद्ध समाप्त होने के साथ ही इजराइल की 120 सदस्यीय संसद के लिए 25 जनवरी 1949 को पहला चुनाव हुआ, जिसमें यहां के नागरिकों ने बढ़-चढ़कर हिस्सा लिया और डेविड बेन गुरियन देश के पहले प्रधानमंत्री चुने गए। इस वक्त दुनिया की कुल यहूदी आबादी के 40 से ज्यादा लोग इजराइल में रहते हैं। इजराइल दुनिया का अकेला यहूदी देश है।

1950 यवतमाल, महाराष्ट्र में विजय कुमार दर्डा का जन्म हुआ। वे राज्य सभा सांसद हैं और महाराष्ट्र के प्रमुख समाचार पत्र समूह लोकमत मीडिया ग्रुप के मुखिया हैं। वे पूर्व कांग्रेसी नेता और कारोबारी जवाहर लाल दर्डा के बेटे हैं।

1955 पोलेंड में वारसा संधि पर हस्ताक्षर हुए। इसके जरिए सदस्य देशों के बीच आर्थिक, सैनिक और सांस्कृतिक संबंधों के विकास पर सहमति बनी।

1960 दिल्ली हाई कोर्ट के मुख्य न्यायाधीश रहे सुप्रीम कोर्ट में जज संजीव खन्ना का जन्म दिल्ली में हुआ।

1963 कुवैत संयुक्त राष्ट्र का 111 वां सदस्य बना।

1973 अमेरिका के सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने सेना में महिलाओं के समान अधिकार को मंजूरी दी।

1978 भारत के प्रसिद्ध नाटककार जगदीशचंद्र माथुर का निधन हुआ।

1981 अमेरिकी अंतरिक्ष एजेंसी नासा ने स्पेश व्हिकल एस-192 लांच किया। 1981 प्रख्यात भारतीय आविष्कारक और कंप्यूटर वैज्ञानिक प्रणव मिस्त्री का जन्म हुआ।

1984 प्रमुख सोशल मीडिया प्लेटफार्म फेसबुक के संस्थापक मार्क जुकरबर्ग Mark Elliot Zuckerberg का जन्म हुआ। जुकरबर्ग की कंपनी का नाम अब मेटा है और फेसबुक, इंस्टाग्राम तथा व्हाट्सऐप आदि इसी कंपनी के प्लेटफार्म हैं।

1986 जर्मन नाजी नरसंहार की भुक्तभोगी ऐनी फ्रैंक की डायरी के 1980 में सभी मूल कागजात प्राप्त करने के बाद नीदरलैंड्स इंस्टीट्यूट फॉर वॉर डॉक्यूमेंटेशन ने ऐनी फ्रैंक की पूरी डायरी 14 मई, 1986 को प्रकाशित की। फ्रैंक ने द्वितीय विश्व युद्ध में नीदरलैंड के जर्मन कब्जे के दौरान अपने परिवार के साथ छिपने के अपने अनुभव लिखे थे।

1987 मुख्यतः हिंदी फिल्मों सहित विभिन्न भारतीय भाषाओं की फिल्मों में अभिनय करने वाली, कैटरीना कैफ जैसी दिखने वाली, कैटरीना की तरह सलमान खान की पसंद और सलमान के साथ 2010 में फिल्म वीर से डेब्यू करने वाली अभिनेत्री और माॅडल ज़रीन खान का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1991 दक्षिण अफ्रीका के रंगभेद विरोधी नेता नेल्सन मंडेला की पत्नी विनी मंडेला को चार युवकों के अपहरण के मामले में छह साल की सजा सुनाई गई।

1991 खूबसूरत, बोल्ड, जानी मानी टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री और माॅडल लवीना टंडन का जन्म लुधियाना, पंजाब में हुआ।

1992 भारत ने गैरकानूनी गतिविधियों संबंधी अधिनियम के तहत लिबरेशन टाइगर्स ऑफ तमिल ईलम (लिट्टे) पर प्रतिबंध लगा दिया। यूरोपीय संघ, कनाडा, अमेरिका में भी इस संगठन पर प्रतिबंध लगा हुआ था। 

1995 मुख्य तिब्बती धर्मगुरु 14वें दलाई लामा द्वारा गेधुन चोकेई न्यिमा को 14 वें दलाई लामा द्वारा तिब्बती बौद्ध धर्म के 11 वें पंचेन लामा के रूप में नामित किया गया था। चीनी प्राधिकरण ने 11 नवंबर, 1995 को ग्येनकेन नोरबू को 11 वें पंचेन लामा के रूप में मान्यता दी और चीनी सरकार द्वारा गेधुन के ठिकाने का कभी खुलासा नहीं किया गया। मानवाधिकार संगठन ने उन्हें दुनिया का सबसे कम उम्र का राजनीतिक कैदी करार दिया।

1997 वर्तमान में जानी मानी खूबसूरत, बोल्ड फिल्म, टेलीविजन, वेबसीरीज अभिनेत्री, मंच परफार्मर एवं माॅडल और 2017 में मिस वल्र्ड चुनी गईं मानुषी छिल्लर का जन्म हरियाणा के झज्जर में हुआ।

1999 बीसवीं सदी के आखिरी विश्व कप क्रिकेट की लॉडर्स (इंग्लैंड) में शुरुआत हुई।

2001 भारत और मलेशिया में सात समझौते हुए।

2004 दक्षिण कोरियाई संवैधानिक न्यायालय ने रो-मू-ह्यून पर महाभियोग के आरोपों समाप्त कर उन्हें राष्ट्रपति के रूप में बहाल किया। रो पर भ्रष्टाचार का आरोप था। इसी दिन डेली मिरर नामक अखबार ने ईराक में युद्धबंदियों पर कथित अत्याचार को दर्शाने वाली झूठी तस्वीरों के प्रकाशन के लिए ब्रिटेन से माफी मांगी।

2006 दि न्यूयार्क टाइम्स के प्रबंध संपादक और पुलित्जर पुरस्कार विजेता प्रख्यात पत्रकार ए.एम.रोसेंथल का निधन हुआ।

2007 जापान ने अपने शांतिवादी संविधान में संशोधन संबंधी विधेयक को मंजूरी दी।

2008 टाइम्स एनआईई ने इंटरनेशनल न्यूजपेपर मार्केटिंग एसोसियेशन (इनमा) अवार्ड-2008 जीता।

2010 ज्ञानपीठ पुरस्कार प्राप्त प्रख्यात मराठी कवियत्रि वृंदा करंदीकर का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन भारत-रूस के बीच रक्षा, परमाणु ऊर्जा, अंतरिक्ष, विज्ञान एवं प्रौद्योगिकी, हाइड्रोकार्बन, व्यापार एवं निवेश आदि में 22 समझोते हुए।

2011 पश्चिमी उत्तर प्रदेश के प्रमुख किसान नेता और भारतीय किसान यूनियन के संस्थापक चौधरी महेंद्र सिंह टिकैत का निधन हुआ। वे 2021 के देशव्यापी किसान आंदोलन के प्रमुख नेता राकेश टिकैत के पिता थे।

2012 इजरायल की जेलों में बंद 1500 फिलीस्तीनी कैदी भूख हड़ताल समाप्त करने को राजी हुए।

2013 ब्राजील समलैंगिक विवाह को मान्यता देने वाला दुनिया का 15वां देश बना। इसी दिन नाइजीरिया के राष्ट्रपति गुडलक जोनाथन ने इस्लामी आतंकी संगठन बोको हराम की आतंकवादी गतिविधियों के कारण पूर्वोत्तर नाइजीरिया में बोर्नो, योब और अदमवा राज्यों के लिए आपातकाल आदेश जारी किया। बोको हराम दुनिया के सबसे खतरनाक आतंकवादी समूहों में से एक बताया जाता है।

2016 प्रख्यात तमिल विद्वान एवं लेखक कंडासामी कुप्पुसामी का निधन हुआ।

2022 श्रीनगर (जम्मू) में चीफ जस्टिस आॅफ इंडिया सीजेआई एन. वी. रमना ने 13 मई को कहा कि स्वस्थ लोकतंत्र के लिए यह जरूरी है कि लोग महसूस करें कि उनके अधिकारों और सम्मान को मान्यता दी गई है और उन्हें संरक्षित किया गया है। न्यायमूर्ति रमना ने इस बात पर जोर दिया कि न्याय से इनकार करने से अंततः अराजकता फैलेगी। सीजेआई ने यहां एक समारोह को संबोधित करते हुए वकीलों और न्यायाधीशों से वादियों के लिए अनुकूल माहौल बनाने का आग्रह किया, जो अक्सर बहुत अधिक मनोवैज्ञानिक दबाव में होते हैं। उन्होंने अफसोस जताया कि भारत में न्याय प्रदान करने का तंत्र बहुत जटिल और महंगा है और देश अदालतों को समावेशी और सुलभ बनाने में बहुत पीछे है। प्रधान न्यायाधीश ने कहा कि एक स्वस्थ लोकतंत्र के कामकाज के लिए, यह जरूरी है कि लोग महसूस करें कि उनके अधिकार और सम्मान सुरक्षित और मान्यता प्राप्त हैं। विवादों का शीघ्र निपटारा एक स्वस्थ लोकतंत्र की पहचान है।

2022 श्रमिक के शोषण, उत्पीड़न और लंबित श्रमिक समस्याओं को लेकर मजदूर किसान महापंचायत के लिए सिडकुल पंतनगर में मजदूरों किसानों ने महिलाओं और बच्चों के साथ विशाल पदयात्रा निकाली। अपराह्न 2 बजे इंटरार्क मजदूरों के सिडकुल पंतनगर स्थित धरनास्थल पर बड़ी संख्या में सिडकुल पंतनगर की अन्य कंपनियों की यूनियनों के नेतृत्व में मजदूर शिफ्टों के साथ पहुंचे। इसमें बड़ी संख्या में महिलाएं ,बच्चे और किसान भी शामिल थंे। यहां वक्ताओं ने जनता की विभिन्न समस्याओं पर विस्तार से जानकारी रखी और कहा कि सिडकुल पंतनगर ,हरिद्वार और सितारगंज समेत उत्तराखंड में अवस्थित उद्योगों में कंपनी मालिकों ,प्रबन्धको एवं ठेकेदारों द्वारा श्रम कानूनों का घोर उल्लंघन कर श्रमिकों का घोर शोषण किया जा रहा है, सरकार, जिला प्रशासन और अन्य नियामक संस्थाएं श्रमिकों की समस्याएं, श्रमिक कानून और समझौते लागू कराने में रुचि नहीं ले रहीं।
