1626 हरार, इथियोपिया में गुलाम परिवार में पैदा हुए मध्यकालीन भारत के प्रमुख राजनीतिज्ञ मलिक अंबर का निधन हुआ। उन्हें बाल्यकाल में गुलाम बाजार में बगदाद के ख्वाजा पीर बगदाद ने खरीदा। बाद में इन्हें  दक्षिण भारत के निजाम प्रथम के मंत्री चंगेज खान ने खरीदा। बाद में वे अपनी प्रतिभा से जाने माने राजनेता बने।

1643 चिली में आए भयंकर भूकंप में सेंटियागो की एक तिहाई आबादी खत्म हुई।

1830 इक्वाडोर गणराज्य की स्थापना हुई और जुआन जोस फ्लोरेंस पहले राष्ट्रपति बने।

1846 अमेरिका और मैक्सिको के बीच पिछले एक साल से टैक्सास को लेकर चल रहे तनाव के बीच अमेरिकी कांग्रेस ने मैक्सिको के खिलाफ अपने युद्ध का ऐलान किया।

1848 जर्मन संगीतकार फ्रेड्रिक पैसियस और फिनिश कवि जोहान लुडविग रूनबर्ग रचित फिनलैंड के राष्ट्रगान माएमे का पहली बार प्रस्तुतिकरण हुआ।

1857 नोबल पुरस्कार प्राप्त विख्यात ब्रिटिश चिकित्सा विज्ञानी रोनाल्ड रोस का जन्म अल्मोड़ा (अब भारत के राज्य उत्तराखंड का प्रमुख शहर) में हुआ।

1880 प्रख्यात वैज्ञानिक और आविष्कारक थॉमस अल्वा एडिसन ने इलेक्ट्रिक ट्रेन का पहला परीक्षण किया। 2 डिब्बों की इस रेल को लगभग आधा किलोमीटर के ट्रैक पर चलाया गया। ट्रेन का इंजन भी एक डिब्बे जैसा ही था जिसे पुलमैन कहा गया। एडिसन ने जिस ट्रैक पर ये ट्रायल किया था, 1882 में उसकी लंबाई को बढ़ाकर लगभग 3 मील कर दिया गया और 2 नए इंजन बनाए गए। एक इंजन पैसेंजर डिब्बे के लिए और दूसरा सामान वाले डिब्बे को खींचने के लिए। ट्रैक को मजबूती देने के लिए 3 छोटे पुल जैसे स्ट्रक्चर बनाए गए। इसी साल इस ट्रैक पर 90 यात्रियों को बैठाकर इलेक्ट्रिक इंजन से पैसेंजर ट्रेन चलाई गई।

1888 ब्राजील साम्राज्य की राजकुमारी इसाबेल ने लेई ऑरिंटो कानून पर हस्ताक्षर कर औपचारिक रूप से ब्राजील में दास प्रथा, गुलामों के कारोबार को समाप्त कर दिया।

1901 स्वतंत्रता सेनानी मथुरा प्रसाद मिश्र वैद्य का जन्म हुआ।

1905 प्रसिद्ध स्वतंत्रता सेनानी, सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता, चिंतक और भारत के पांचवे राष्ट्रपति हुए फखरुद्दीन अली अहमद का जन्म दिल्ली में हुआ।

1917 प्रसिद्ध फिल्मी हास्य अभिनेता असित सेन का जन्म गोरखपुर में हुआ।

1918 भरतनाट्यम की सुप्रसिद्ध नृत्यांगना टी. बालासरस्वती का जन्म हुआ।

1922 अमेरिकी हास्य अभिनेत्री, मौड एंड गोल्डन गर्ल्स से चर्चित बीट्रिस आर्थर का जन्म हुआ।

1940 जर्मनी के पोलैंड पर हमले के बाद ब्रिटेन में अफरातफरी के माहौल में ब्रिटिश प्रधानमंत्री नेविल चैम्बरलिन को इस्तीफा देना पड़ा और उनकी जगह विंस्टन चर्चिल प्रधानमंत्री बने। 13 मई को उन्होंने अपनी कैबिनेट को पहली बार संबोधित किया। भाषण शुरू करते हुए चर्चिल ने कहा कि अगर आप पूछेंगे कि हमारी आगे की नीति क्या है? तो मेरा जवाब होगा कि हमें अपनी पूरी ताकत के साथ जमीन, समुद्र और हवा में दुश्मन से लड़ना है। मेरे पास आप लोगों को देने के लिए खून, आंसू, पसीने और मेहनत के सिवा कुछ नहीं है। आप पूछेंगे हमारा लक्ष्य क्या है? मैं कहूंगा, जीत, हर कीमत पर जीत। 2003 में टाइम मैगजीन ने इस दिन को दुनिया बदलने वाले 80 दिनों की सूची में शामिल किया।

1943 हिंदुस्तान के जाने माने भजन, गजल और फिल्मी गीत गायक मनहर उधास का जन्म सावर कुंडला, गुजरात में हुआ। यह सुप्रसिद्ध गायकों निर्मल उधास और पंकज उधास के बड़े भाई हैं।

1951 लखनऊ, अवध क्षेत्र के प्रसिद्ध उर्दू शायर हसरत मोहानी का निधन हुआ। मौलाना हसरत मोहानी साहित्यकार, शायर, पत्रकार, इस्लामी विद्वान, सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता और इंकलाब जिन्दाबाद का नारा देने वाले हिंदुस्तान की गुलामी के खिलाफ आजादी के आंदोलन के प्रमुख व्यक्तित्व थे। हसरत मोहानी का नाम सय्यद फजल-उल-हसन तखल्लुस हसरत था। वह कस्बा मोहान जिला उन्नाव में 1 जनवरी 1875 को पैदा हुए।

1952 प्रथम आम चुनाव के बाद स्वतंत्र भारत की पहली संसद का सत्र शुरू हुआ।

1956 श्री श्री रवि शंकर के नाम से सुपरिचित बड़े धार्मिक कारोबारी आर्ट ऑफ लिविंग फाउंडेशन के संस्थापक आध्यात्मिक नेता रवि शंकर का जन्म तमिलनाडु के पापनासम में हुआ।

1957 सुप्रसिद्ध अंग्रेजी फिल्म एवं टेलीविजन अभिनेता, हास्य कलाकार मार्क हीप का जन्म कोडाइकनाल, तमिलनाडु में हुआ।

1958 जार्डन और इराक ने अरब फैडरेशन की स्थापना की।

1962 सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन देश के दूसरे राष्ट्रपति बने।

1969 आॅल इंडिया मजलिस ए इत्तेहादुल मुसलमीन के अध्यक्ष प्रमुख मुस्लिम राजनीतिज्ञ और 4 बार के लोकसभा सांसद असदुद्दीन ओवेसी का जन्म हैदराबाद में हुआ।

1978 देश का पहला ध्वजवाहक जहाज आईएनएस दिल्ली सेवामुक्त हुआ।

1979 खूबसूरत, बोल्ड जानी मानी थिएटर, टेलीविजन एवं फिल्म अभिनेत्री अमृता सुभाष का जन्म हुआ।

1981 इसाइयों के सर्वोच्च धर्माधिकारी पोप जॉन पॉल द्वितीय को तुर्की के एक नागरिक ने वेटिकन सिटी के सेंट पीटर्स स्क्वायर में गोली मार दी। पोप इस हमले में गंभीर रूप से घायल हुए। इसी दिन जाने माने तमिल फिल्म एवं टेलीविजन अभिनेता और माॅडल कौशल प्रसाद मंडा का जन्म विसाखापट्टनम में हुआ।

1982 जाने माने बाॅलीवुड फिल्मकार पुनीत मल्होत्रा का जन्म बांद्रा, बंबई में हुआ। 

1984 सुप्रसिद्ध हिंदी, मलयालम, तमिल, तेलुगू, बंगाली, गुजराती कन्नड़ आदि भाषाओं की फिल्मों के गीत गायक बेनी दयाल का जन्म अबुधाबी, संयुक्त अरब अमीरात में हुआ।

1985 जानी मानी खूबसूरत, बोल्ड, बहुप्रतिभावान टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल मेघा गुप्ता का जन्म लखनऊ में हुआ।

1989 चीन में लगभग 2000 छात्रों ने थियान मन चौक पर भूख हड़ताल शुरू की।

1995 रेडवुड सिटी, कैलीफोर्निया में जन्मी अमेरिकी सुंदरी चेल्सी स्मिथ यानी चेल्सी मरियम पर्ल स्मिथ मिस यूनिवर्स बनीं।

1998 भारत ने पोखरण में 2 परमाणु परीक्षण किए। इससे 2 दिन पहले 11 मई को भी भारत ने इसी जगह 3 परमाणु परीक्षण किए थे। इसके बाद अमेरिका और अन्य देशों ने भारत पर कई प्रतिबंध लगा दिए। अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति बिल क्लिंटन ने परमाणु परीक्षण के विरोध में भारत पर कड़े प्रतिबंध की घोषणा की। इसी दिन जापान ने भारत को दी जाने वाली सहायता पर रोक लगायी।

1999 जापानी छात्र के नागुयी विश्व की सात सर्वोच्च चोटियों पर चढ़ने वाला दुनिया का सबसे कम उम्र (25 वर्षीय) का पर्वतारोही बना।

2000 भारत की मिस इंडिया लारा दत्ता ने साइप्रस में हुई प्रतियोगिता में मिस यूनीवर्स का खिताब जीता।

2001 भारत के जाने माने, प्रतिष्ठित अंग्रेजी लेखक, कथाकार आर. के. नारायण का निधन हुआ। 1964 में भारत सरकार ने उन्हें पद्मभूषण सम्मान दिया। वे राज्यसभा के मनोनीत सदस्य भी रहे। इसी दिन सिल्वियो बर्लुस्कोनी ने आम चुनाव जीता, दूसरी बार इटली के प्रधानमंत्री बने।

2003 सऊदी अरब की राजधानी रियाद में आत्मघाती हमलों में 29 व्यक्ति मारे गये।

2004 भारत के आम चुनाव में शाइनिंग इंडिया के नारे और भारत की बेहतरी के तमाम दावों और चुनाव में काफी पैसा खर्च करने के बावजूद अटल बिहारी वाजपेयी सरकार की हार हुई।

2006 प्रख्यात भारतीय चिकित्सक हेमलता गुप्ता का निधन हुआ।

2008 पाकिस्तान मुस्लिम लीग-नवाज के सभी नौ मंत्रियों ने जजों की बहाली के मुद्दे पर इस्तीफा दिया।

2009 यूरोपीय आयोग ने कंप्यूटर चिप बनाने वाली कंपनी इंटेल पर प्रतिद्वंद्वी कंपनी के प्रति गलत व्यावसायिक नीतियां अपनाने पर एक अरब यूरो से अधिक का इतिहास का सबसे बड़ा जुर्माना लगाया।

2010 भारतीय सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता इला भट्ट को निवानो शांति पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया।

2011 बादल सरकार के नाम से सुप्रसिद्ध अभिनेता, नाटककार, निर्देशक और इन सबके अतिरिक्त रंगमंच के सिद्धांतकार सुधींद्र सरकार का निधन हुआ।

2016 भारत के आध्यात्मिक संत और संत निरंकारी मिशन के प्रमुख बाबा हरदेव सिंह की सड़क दुर्घटना में मृत्यु हुई।

The engine of the train was also similar to a coach called Pullman. In 1882, the track on which Edison did this trial was increased to about 3 miles and 2 new engines were built. One engine to pull the passenger compartment and the other to pull the luggage compartment. To strengthen the track, 3 small bridge-like structures were built. Maulana Hasrat Mohani was a litterateur, poet, journalist, Islamic scholar, social activist and a prominent personality of the freedom movement against the slavery of India, who gave the slogan of Inquilab Zindabad. Hasrat Mohani's name was Syed Fazal-ul-Hasan Takhallus Hasrat. He was born on 1 January 1875 in Kasba Mohan district Unnao.

1952 The session of the first Parliament of independent India began after the first general election.

1956 Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, better known as Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, spiritual leader and founder of the Art of Living Foundation, a large religious business, was born in Papanasam, Tamil Nadu.

1957 Mark Heap, noted English film and television actor and comedian, was born in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu.
