1364 पोलैंड के राजा कासिमिर तृतीय ने देश के प्रथम विश्वविद्यालय की स्थापना के लिए राजाज्ञा पर दस्तखत किये।

1510 चीन के अनहुआ राज्य (आधुनिक शानक्सी) के राजकुमार झुआ झिफान ने झेंग सम्राट के शासन के खिलाफ विद्रोह शुरू किया।

1459 राजस्थान के प्रमुख नगर जोधपुर की स्थापना राजा राव जोधा राठौर ने की। राव जोधा ने ही मेहरानगढ़ दुर्ग का निर्माण कराया।

1666 पुरंदर की संधि के लिए छत्रपति शिवाजी मुगल शहंशाह औरंगजेब से मिलने आगरा स्थित शाही दरबार पहुंचे।

1689 इंग्लैंड और हॉलैंड ने लीग ऑफ आग्सबर्ग बनाया।

1820 फ्लोरेंस, इटली में आधुनिक नर्सिग आन्दोलन की जन्मदाता एक नर्स फ्लोरेंस नाइटिंगेल का जन्म हुआ। इतालवी सामंती कुलीन परिवार में जन्मीं फ्लोरेंस को नर्स बनने लिए घरवालों का विरोध झेलना पड़ा। तब नर्सिंग सम्मानित पेशा नहीं माना जाता था। फ्लोरेंस नर्सिंग की ट्रेनिंग के लिए 1851 जर्मनी गईं और ट्रेनिंग पूरी कर वापस लौटकर 1853 में लंदन में महिलाओं के लिए अस्पताल खोला। इसी साल क्रीमिया युद्ध शुरू हो गया। फ्लोरेंस 38 अन्य नर्सों के साथ तुर्की के एक सैनिक अस्पताल में युद्ध में घायल सैनिकों की सेवा करने गईं। उन्होंने घायल और बीमार सैनिकों की देखभाल में दिन-रात एक कर दिया। फ्लोरेंस रात में भी सैनिकों की सेवा में लगी रहती थीं। वह रात में हाथ में लालटेन लेकर मरीजों को देखने जाती थीं, इसी कारण सैनिक उन्हें ‘लेडी विद द लैंप’ कहने लगे। जब फ्लोरेंस युद्ध के बाद लौटीं, तो उनका यह नाम सुपरिचित हो गया था। आज भी पूरी दुनिया उन्हें इसी नाम से जानती है। मरीजों के उपचार और देखभाल में नर्सों का अहम रोल होता है। 1953 में, अमेरिकी स्वास्थ्य, शिक्षा और कल्याण विभाग के एक अधिकारी डोरोथी सदरलैंड ने राष्ट्रपति ड्वाइट  आइजनहावर से संपर्क किया और नर्स दिवस मनाने का प्रस्ताव रखा। उन्होंने उसके प्रस्ताव को मंजूरी नहीं दी थी। 1965 से, अंतर्राष्ट्रीय नर्स परिषद इंटरनेशनल नर्स काउंसिल ने इस दिन को मनाना शुरु किया। जनवरी 1974 में, 12 मई को आधिकारिक तौर पर अंतर्राष्ट्रीय नर्स दिवस के रूप में घोषित किया गया, क्योंकि इसी 1820 में फ्लोरेंस नाइटिंगेल का जन्म हुआ, जो आधुनिक नर्सिंग की जनक हैं। हर साल इस दिन इंटरनेशनल नर्स काउंसिल पर अंतर्राष्ट्रीय नर्स दिवस किट तैयार और वितरित करता है जिसमें शैक्षिक और सार्वजनिक सूचना सामग्री होती है जो जनता के बीच नर्सों द्वारा उपयोग की जा सकती है।

मालूम हो कि 1998 से 8 मई को राष्ट्रीय छात्र नर्स दिवस मनाया जाता है और 6 मई से 12 मई तक राष्ट्रीय नर्स सप्ताह चलता है। इंटरनेशनल काउंसिल ऑफ नर्स ने अंतर्राष्ट्रीय नर्स दिवस 2023 की थीम तय की, हमारी नर्से हमारा भविष्य है। जिसका अर्थ है, भविष्य की स्वास्थ्य सेवाओं में नर्स का नेतृत्व बहुत महत्वपूर्ण है। 2023 में, हम यह दिखाना चाहते हैं कि नर्सिंग भविष्य में कैसे दिखेगी और साथ ही कैसे स्वास्थ्य सेवा के अगले चरण को बदल देगी।

1899 रूस में यूजीन पीटरसन का जन्म हुआ, जो आगे चलकर योग शिक्षिका बनीं। यूजीन को भारत में दुनिया की पहली विदेशी योग गुरु माना जाता है। योग से अनुराग के चलते यूजीन 1927 में भारत आ गईं। यहां उन्होंने अपना नाम इंदिरा देवी रख लिया और प्रसिद्ध योग गुरु कृष्णामाचार्य की शिष्या बन गईं। उन्होंने दुनिया के कई देशों में योग की शिक्षा दी। 1987 में उन्हें अंतरराष्ट्रीय योग फेडरेशन का अध्यक्ष बनाया गया। 2002 में उनका निधन हो गया।

1902 पेंसिल्वेनिया में ंएंथ्रेसाइट कोयला खदानों के एक लाख 40 हजार श्रमिकों ने हड़ताल की।

1915 क्रांतिकारी रासबिहारी बोस ने जापानी नौका सानुकी मारू के जरिये भारत से प्रस्थान किया।

1925 उजबेकिस्तान और किर्गिजिस्तान स्वायत्त सोवियत गणराज्य बने।

1941 जेड3, दुनिया का पहला कार्यशील प्रोग्राम्ड, पूर्णतः स्वचालित डिजिटल कंप्यूटर बर्लिन में वैज्ञानिकों के मध्य प्रस्तुत किया गया, इसे जर्मन सिविल इंजीनियर कोनार्ड जुसे ने डिजाइन किया था, जिन्हें कंप्यूटर का आविष्कारक भी कहा गया।

1942 जर्मनी के आश्विट्ज में हिटलर की नाजी सरकार द्वारा बनाये गये नरसंहार केंद्र कंस्ट्रक्शन कैंप में 1500 यहूदियों को गैस चेंबर में मारा गया। इन चैंबरों में हजारों यहूदियों को एक साथ बंद कर उसमें साइक्लोन बी गैस छोड़ी जाती थी जिससे वे दम घुटने से तड़प-तड़प कर मर जाते थे। बताया जाता है कि मरे लोगों के सिरों से बाल उतार कर कंबल बनाने, शरीरों से चर्बी निकालकर साबुन बनाने, शव जलाकर उनकी राख से गड्ढे भरने के काम भी किये गये।

1945 भारत के 37वें मुख्य न्यायाधीश के. जी. बालकृष्णन का जन्म काडुथुरुथी केरल में हुआ।

1954 तमिलनाडु के 13वें मुख्यमंत्री के. पलानीस्वामी का जन्म हुआ।

1955 ऑस्ट्रिया को पूर्ण स्वतंत्रता मिली, द्वितीय विश्व युद्ध की समाप्ति के बाद भी ऑस्ट्रिया 1945 से 1955 तक मित्र देशों के कब्जे में रहा।

1960 प्रमुख भाजपा नेता रहे लालजी टंडन के बेटे और वर्तमान में उत्तर प्रदेश सरकार में मंत्री आशुतोष टंडन का जन्म लखनऊ में हुआ।

1965 इजरायल और पश्चिम जर्मनी ने राजनयिक संबंध शुरु करने के लिए पत्रों का आदान प्रदान किया।

1975 कंबोडिया और अमेरिका के बीच वियतनाम की अंतिम आधिकारिक लड़ाई मायागज हुई जहां अमेरिकी कंटेनर जहाज एसएस मायागज को कंबोडियाई सेना ने जब्त कर लिया था।

1984 जाने माने फिल्म, टेलीविजन, यूट्यूब, वेबसीरीज अभिनेता, मंच परफार्मर फ्रेडी दारूवाला का जन्म सूरत गुजरात में हुआ।

1987 जानी मानी खूबसूरत, बोल्ड बाॅलीवुड एवं मलयालम फिल्म तथा टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री, मंच परफार्मर और माॅडल अमृता प्रकाश का जन्म जयपुर में हुआ।

2002 अमेरिका के पूर्व राष्ट्रपति जिम्मी कार्टर क्यूबा के राष्ट्र प्रमुख फिदेल कास्त्रो के साथ बातचीत करने के लिए पांच दिन की यात्रा पर राजधानी हवाना पहुंचे। कास्त्रो की 1959 की क्रांति के बाद से क्यूबा की यात्रा करने वाले कार्टर अमेरिका के पहले नेता बने।

2007 पाकिस्तान के मुख्य न्यायाधीश इफ्तिखार मोहम्मद चौधरी की कराची यात्रा के दौरान भड़के दंगों में 50 लोगों की मौत हुई, 100 से अधिक घायल हुए।

2008 ग्रेट सिचुआन भूकंप चीन के सिचुआन प्रांत में रिक्टर पैमाने पर 8.0 की तीव्रता के साथ आया। 1976 के बाद से चीन में यह सबसे घातक भूकंप था और 21 बार आया, जिसमें सरकारी आधिकारिक बयान के अनुसार 69,197 लोग मारे गए। 2008 में इसी दिन जजों की बहाली के मुद्दे को लेकर कोई समझौता न होने के कारण पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री नवाज शरीफ ने साझा सरकार से हटने का निर्णय लिया। इसी दिन 2008 में पोस्टविले, आयोवा, अमेरिका में आव्रजन और सीमा शुल्क प्रवर्तन ने एक बड़ी छापेमारी में फर्जी दस्तावेज, धोखाधड़ी कर अवैध रूप से आ बसे 400 प्रवासियों को पकड़ा।

2010 लीबिया में त्रिपोली अंतरराष्ट्रीय हवाई अड्डे के निकट अफ्रीकिया एयरवेज का विमान दुर्घटनाग्रस्त होने से उसमें सवार 104 लोगों में से 103 लोगों की मौत हुई। 2010 में इसी दिन बिहार के बहुचर्चित बथानी टोला नरसंहार घटना में भोजपुर के प्रथम अपर जिला एवं सत्र न्यायाधीश अजय कुमार श्रीवास्तव ने तीन दोषियों को फाँसी तथा 20 को आजीवन कारावास की सजा सुनाई।

2015 प्रख्यात बांग्ला कथा लेखिका सुचित्रा भट्टाचार्य का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन नेपाल में आए जोरदार भूकंप से 218 लोगों की मौत हुई और 3500 से अधिक घायल हुए।

2017 विश्व के 4000 से अधिक कम्प्यूटरों पर एक रैनसमवेयर ने हमला किया। 2017 में इसी दिन अहमदाबाद में पहले एयर क्वालिटी मॉनिटरिंग सिस्टम को लॉन्च किया गया।

2019 मुंबई इंडियंस ने चेन्नई सुपर किंग्स को 1 रन से हराकर आईपीएल का खिताब जीता।

2022 खबर आई कि खाद्य पदार्थों की कीमतों में भारी बढ़ोतरी के चलते खुदरा मुद्रास्फीति अप्रैल में सालाना आधार पर बढ़कर 7.79 प्रतिशत हो गई, जो आठ साल का सबसे ऊंचा स्तर है। इसी दिन सिंगापुर एयरलाइंस की अनुषंगी स्कूट के सीईओ कैंपबेल विल्सन को टाटा संस ने अपनी विमानन कंपनी एयर इंडिया का मुख्य कार्यपालक अधिकारी (सीईओ) और प्रबंध निदेशक (एमडी) नियुक्त करने की घोषणा की।

1820 Florence Nightingale, a nurse who pioneered the modern nursing movement, was born in Florence, Italy. Born into an Italian feudal noble family, Florence had to face opposition from her family to become a nurse. Nursing was not considered a respectable profession then. Florence went to Germany in 1851 for nursing training and returned after completing the training and opened a hospital for women in London in 1853. In the same year the Crimean War started. Florence, along with 38 other nurses, went to a military hospital in Turkey to tend to soldiers wounded in the war. They united day and night in caring for the wounded and sick soldiers. Florence was engaged in the service of soldiers even at night. She used to visit the patients at night with a lantern in her hand, that's why the soldiers called her 'Lady with the Lamp'. When Florence returned after the war, her name had become well known. Even today the whole world knows him by this name. Nurses play an important role in the treatment and care of patients. In 1953, Dorothy Sutherland, an official with the US Department of Health, Education and Welfare, approached President Dwight Eisenhower and proposed the celebration of Nurses Day. He did not approve of his proposal. Since 1965, International Nurses Council International Nurses Council started celebrating this day. In January 1974, May 12 was officially declared as International Nurses Day, since it was in 1820 that Florence Nightingale, the mother of modern nursing, was born. Every year on this day the International Nurses Council prepares and distributes International Nurses Day kits containing educational and public information material that can be used by nurses among the public.
