1840 ब्रिटिश सरकार ने पहला आधिकारिक डाक टिकट निर्गत किया। यह विश्व का पहला डाक टिकट था। इस टिकट के ऊपर ब्रिटेन की महारानी विक्टोरिया का चित्र था। डाक टिकट काले रंग में छोटे से चैकोर कागज पर छापा गया, कीमत एक पेनी रखी गई।

1844 हांगकांग द्वारा दुनिया के दूसरे और हांगकांग के पहले पुलिस बल की स्थापना की गयी।

1851 इंग्लैंड की महारानी विक्टोरिया ने लंदन में महा प्रदर्शनी द ग्रेट एग्जिीबीशन का उद्घाटन किया।

1886 अमेरिका के लाखों मजदूरों ने एक साथ हड़ताल शुरू की। वैसे तो श्रमिक काम के घंटे तय करने की मांग को लेकर 1877 से और छुट-पुट रूप से उससे पहले से भी आंदोलन कर रहे थे। लेकिन 1 मई के उपरोक्त आंदोलन के बाद यह दुनिया के विभिन्न देशों में फैलने लगा। एक मई के अमेरिकी मजदूर आंदोलन में 11,000 फैक्टरियों के कम से कम तीन लाख अस्सी हजार मजदूर शामिल हुए और वहीं से एक मई को मजदूर दिवस मनाने की शुरुआत हुई। मालूम हो कि इससे पहले मालिकान मजदूरों के साथ बहुत अमानवीयता से पेश आते थे, 12 से 20 घंटे तक रोजाना काम कराया जाता, उन्हें समुचित वेतन और किसी प्रकार की सुरक्षा भी नहीं थी। मजदूर आंदोलन में हजारो लोगों ने अपनी जान गंवाई, सरकारों और पूंजीपतियों, मालिकान की यातनाएं लाखों श्रमिकों ने झेलीं। और फिर दुनिया भर में श्रम सुधार हुए। 20वीं सदी में श्रमिक सुरक्षा और उन्हें तमाम तरह के अधिकार मिले, लेकिन वर्तमान सदी में फिर से मजदूरों के अधिकार छीने जा रहे हैं, पूंजीपतियों और सरकारों के फायदे के लिए मजदूर विरोधी कानून बनाए और लागू किये जा रहे हैं। इसलिए मजदूरों में भारी गुस्सा है और श्रमिक अधिकारों के लिए फिर से मजदूर एकजुटता और आंदोलन की बेहद जरूरत है। भारत की केंद्रीय सरकार ने मजदूरों को पूरी तरह मालिकों का गुलाम बनाने और असहाय करने के लिए पुराने श्रमिक कानूनों को बदल चुकी है और नये मालिकान हितैषी कानून लागू कर रही है। कर्मचारी, मजदूर लगातार इसका विरोध कर रहे हैं।

1897 रामकृष्ण परमहंस के शिष्य रहे विवेकानंद ने रामकृष्ण मिशन की स्थापना की।

1908 क्रांतिकारी प्रफुल्ल चाकी ने मुजफ्फरपुर बम कांड को अंजाम देने के बाद खुद को गोली मार ली।

1913 प्रख्यात फिल्म अभिनेता बलराज साहनी का जन्म हुआ। बलराज वामपंथी-समाजवादी विचारधारा से ओत-प्रोत थे, अच्छे वक्ता, अभिनेता और समाजा सचेतक थे। 1 मई 1913 को रावलपिंडी, पाकिस्तान में जन्में युधिष्ठिर साहनी का फिल्मी नाम बलराज साहनी है। 1953 में आई और बहुत लोकप्रिय हुई बिमल राॅय की फिल्म दो बीघा जमीन में अभिनय करने से पहले साहनी ने अपने रोल के की तैयारी के लिए काफी समय कलकत्ता में हाथ ठेला (सवारी रिक्शा) एक सामान्य रिक्शे वाले की तरह खींचा। फिल्मों में आने से पहले बलराज साहनी बीबीसी हिंदी के लंदन स्टूडियो में समाचार प्रसारक थे।

1914 अमेरिका की कार निर्माता फोर्ड पहली कंपनी बनी जिसने अपने कर्मचारियों के लिए आठ घंटे काम करने का नियम लागू किया। इसी दिन चीन की संसद के औपचारिक विघटन के बाद चीन के अस्थायी संविधान को बदलने के लिए कैबिनेट से 66 पुरुषों की एक समिति ने संवैधानिक कॉम्पैक्ट बनाया। इस नई कानूनी प्रणाली में चीन की सेना, वित्त, विदेश नीति और नागरिक अधिकारों पर चीन गणराज्य के पहले राष्ट्रपति युआन शिकाई को असीमित अधिकार दिए गये।

1919 मन्ना डे के नाम से विख्यात भारतीय पार्श्व गायक प्रबोध चंद्र डे का जन्म कलकत्ता में हुआ।

1922 प्रख्यात भारतीय समाजवादी नेता एक मधु लिमये का जन्म हुआ।

1923 भारत में मई दिवस मनाने की शुरुआत चेन्नई में हुई। इससे पहले 80 देश ऐसे थे जहां एक मई को श्रम दिवस मनाया जाता था। 1 मई 1923 को लेबर किसान पार्टी ऑफ हिंदुस्तान ने मद्रास (अब चेन्नई) में इसकी शुरुआत की थी। इसका नेतृत्व वामपंथी व समाजवादी पार्टियां कर रही थीं। पहली बार लाल रंग का झंडा मजदूरों की एकजुटता और संघर्ष के प्रतीक के तौर पर इस्तेमाल किया गया था। तब से हर साल भारत में यह दिन मनाया जाता है। कई राज्यों में 1 मई को अवकाश होता है।

1926 किंगरा सिक्ख समुदाय के एक भारतीय सामाजिक-आध्यात्मिक नेता बाबा इकबाल सिंह का जन्म हुआ।

1932 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय राजनीतिज्ञ और कर्नाटक के मुख्यमंत्री हुए एस.एम. कृष्णा का जन्म सोमनहल्ली में हुआ।

1940 भारत की गुप्तचर एजेंसी रिसर्च एंड एनालिसिस विंग रॉ के निदेशक हुए अरविन्द दवे का जन्म हुआ। यह जासूसी एजेंसी पड़ोसी देशों में भारत के लिए काम करती है।

1944 भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के नेता और केंद्रीय रेल मंत्री तथा प्रमुख खेल संघों के प्रमुख हुए सुरेश कलमाडी का जन्म पुणे में हुआ।

1945 सोवियत लाल सेना का बर्लिन में प्रवेश हुआ। इससे कुछ घंटे पहले ही जर्मन तानाशाह एडोल्फ हिटलर और उसकी प्रेमिका इबा ब्राउन सोवियत सेना या अपने विरोधियों द्वारा पकड़े जाने के डर से आत्महत्या कर चुके थे।

1971 विख्यात तमिल फिल्म अभिनेता अजीत कुमार का जन्म सिकंद्राबाद में हुआ।

1972 भारत की कोयला खदानों का राष्ट्रीयकरण किया गया।

In the 20th century, laborers got protection and all kinds of rights, but in the present century again the rights of laborers are being taken away, anti-labor laws are being made and implemented for the benefit of capitalists and governments. That is why there is a lot of anger among the workers and there is an urgent need for labor solidarity and movement again for labor rights. The central government of India has changed the old labor laws and is implementing new owner-friendly laws to make the laborers completely slaves and helpless to the owners. Employees, laborers are continuously opposing it.
