1616 इंग्लैंड में विश्व विख्यात और शीर्ष नाटककार, चिंतक, कवि विलियम शेक्सपियर का देहांत हुआ। इनके नाटकों ने दुनिया को प्रभावित किया।

1660 स्वीडन और पोलैंड ओलिवा संधि पर सहमत हुए।

1661 चार्ल्स द्वितीय का इंग्लैंड, आयरलैंड और स्कॉटलैंड के सम्राट के रूप में वेस्टमिंस्टर एबे लंदन में राज्याभिषेक किया गया।

1774 ब्रिटिश कमांडर कर्नल चैपमेन ने रोहिला सेना को हराकर रुहेलखंड पर कब्जा किया।

1858 प्रख्यात भारतीय महिला विद्वान, कवियत्री और समाज सुधारक पंडिता रमाबाई का जन्म महाराष्ट्र के कनारा में हुआ। महिला अधिकारों और सम्मान की पैरोकार रमाबाई ने भारत भ्रमण और इंग्लैंड तक की यात्रा की। इसी दिन भारत के प्रथम स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के हीरो जगदीशपुर के बाबू वीर कुंवर सिंह का निधन हुआ।

1873 महाराष्ट्र के विख्यात समाज सुधारक विट्ठल रामजी शिंदे का जन्म हुआ।

1913 बीची के नाम से मशहूर कर्नाटक के विख्यात मानवतावादी, लेखक रायासम भीमसेना राव का जन्म हरपनहल्ली में हुआ। इसी दिन भारत के संविधान के लेखक, पत्रकार, चिंतक और दलित अधिकारवादी डॉ. भीमराव आम्बेडकर की जीवनी लेखक साहित्यकार धनंजय कीर का जन्म हुआ।

1938 की 23 अप्रैल को एस जानकी का जन्म रिपाले, आंध्र प्रदेश में हुआ। भारत की प्रसिद्ध पार्श्वगायिका जानकी ने तमिल, तेलुगू, कन्नड़, मलयालम और हिंदी भाषाओं में करीब 20 हजार से अधिक गीत गाएं। उन्हें दक्षिण भारत की सुर कोकिला कहा जाता है।

1926 प्रख्यात हिंदी भाषा उन्नायक, प्रखर चिंतक और स्वतंत्रता संग्राम सेनानी माधवराव सप्रे का निधन हुआ।

1927 सुरबहार वाद्ययंत्र बजाने वाली एकमात्र महिला संगीतज्ञा अन्नपूर्णा देवी का जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के नेता और गोवा के मुख्यमंत्री रहे विल्फ्रेड डिसूजाका जन्म हुआ।

1930 आजादी के नायकों में से एक वीर चंद्र सिंह गढ़वाली को बेहद सम्मान के साथ याद किया जाता है। वे ब्रिटिश भारतीय सेना में 3 सितंबर 1914 को भर्ती हुए। 1 अगस्त 1915 को उन्हें सैनिकों के साथ अंग्रेजों ने फ्रांस भेज दिया। 1 फरवरी 1916 को वे वापस लैंसडौन, गढ़वाल आ गये। इसके बाद 1917 में उन्होंने प्रथम विश्व युद्ध के दौरान अंग्रेजों की ओर से मेसोपोटामिया युद्ध व 1918 में बगदाद की लड़ाई लड़ी। बाद में अंग्रेजों ने उन्हें हवलदार से सैनिक बना दिया। चंद्र सिंह की इसी दौरान राष्ट्रपिता महात्मा गांधी से मुलाकात हुई। 1920 में चंद्र सिंह को बटालियन के साथ बजीरिस्तान भेजा गया। वापस आने पर उन्हे खैबर दर्रा भेजा गया और उन्हें मेजर हवलदार बना दिया गया। तब पेशावर में आजादी की जंग चल रही थी। अंग्रेजों ने चंद्र सिंह को उनकी बटालियन के साथ पेशावर भेज दिया और इस आंदोलन को कुचलने के निर्देश दिए। 23 अप्रैल 1930 को आंदोलनरत निहत्थी जनता पर फायरिग का हुक्म दिया गया, तो चंद्र सिंह ने निहत्थों पर गोलियां चलाने से इनकार कर दिया। आज्ञा के उल्लंघन पर अंग्रेजों ने चंद्र सिंह व उनके साथियों पर मुकदमा चलाया। उन्हें सजा हुई व उनकी संपत्ति भी जब्त कर ली गई। अलग-अलग जेलों में रहने के बाद 26 सितंबर 1941 को वे जेल से रिहा हुए।

1935 यूरोपीय देश पोलैंड ने संविधान अपनाया।

1946 युगांडा के प्रसिद्ध लेखक, राजनीतिक टिप्पणीकार, चिंतक और कंपाला अंतरराष्ट्रीय विश्वविद्यालय के कुलपति मोहम्मद ममदानी का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1951 अमेरिकन पत्रकार विलियम एन ओटिस को चेकोस्लोवाकिया सरकार ने जासूसी के आरोप में गिरफ्तार किया।

1952 विख्यात अमेरिकी संगीतकार, गीतकार गायक और संगीत रिकाॅर्ड उत्पादक नारदा माइकेल वाल्डेन का जन्म कालामाज़ू, मिसिगन में हुआ।

1965 विख्यात एवरेस्ट विजेता पर्वतारोही तेन्जिंग नोर्गे के बेटे प्रसिद्ध पर्वतारोही जामलिंग तेन्जिंग नोर्गे का जन्म दार्जिलिंग में हुआ।

1968 जानी मानी मराठी, हिंदी फिल्म अभिनेत्री, भारतीय शास्त्रीय लोक नृत्यांगना किशोरी शहाणे का जन्म पुणे में हुआ और इसी दिन प्रख्यात गजल गायक बड़े गुलाम अली खान का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन कोलंबिया विश्वविद्यालय, न्यूयॉर्क में वियतनाम में अमेरिकी युद्ध का विरोध कर रहे छात्रों ने प्रशासन की इमारतों कब्जा कर लिया।

1969 जाने माने फिल्म अभिनेता मनोज बाजपेयी का जन्म हुआ।

1973 विख्यात हिंदी और ब्रजभाषा कवि और लेखक धीरेन्द्र वर्मा का निधन हुआ।

1974 फेमिना मिस इंडिया ऐशिया पेसिफिक 1994, फिल्म तथा टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री श्वेता मेनन का जन्म चंडीगढ़ में हुआ।

1984 वैज्ञानिकों ने एड्स के वायरस के बारे में पता लगाया।

2020 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय रंगमंच अभिनेत्री और निर्देशिका उषा गांगुली का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन भारत में कोरोना वायरस के मामले 21,700 हुए, मरने वालों की संख्या 686 पहुंची। देश में लॉकडाउन को 30 दिन पूरे हुए, हालांकि कुछ राज्यों जैसे उत्तराखंड आदि में 22 मार्च के जनता कर्फ्यू को ही लाॅकडाउन में तब्दील कर दिया गया था, इस हिसाब से कुछ राज्यों में लाॅकडाउन 23 अप्रैल को 32 दिन का हुआ।

Apart from being a filmmaker, he was also a story writer, painter and film critic. His films also got many honors abroad. In 1978, he was chosen by the governing committee of the Berlin Film Festival as one of the world's three greatest directors of all time. In 1985, he was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest honor of the Hindi film industry. He received both the Lifetime Achievement Oscar and the Bharat Ratna in 1992. He died on 23 April 1992 due to a heart attack. On the same day, McDonald's opened its first fast-food restaurant in China.
