1080 डेनमार्क में अपने भाई हैरल्ड तृतीय के देहांत के बाद कैन्यूट चतुर्थ राजा डेनमार्क का बना।

1704 जॉन कैंपबेल ने अमेरिका का प्रथम अखबार बोस्टन से प्रकाशित किया, द बोस्टन न्यूज लैटर। इसे ब्रिटिश आर्थिक मदद से प्रकाशित किया गया और छपने से पहले ब्रिटेन सरकार की अनुमति लेनी पड़ती थी।

1524 प्रसिद्ध इतालवी खोजी, यात्री और नाविक जियोवान्नी वेराजानो ने न्यूयॉर्क खाड़ी की खोज की। फ्रांस के राजा फ्रांसिस प्रथम के कर्मचारी थे। वह 1524 में फ्लोरिडा और न्यू ब्रंसविक के बीच उत्तरी अमेरिका के अटलांटिक तट का पता लगाने वाले पहले यूरोपीय के रूप में प्रसिद्ध हैं, जिसमें न्यू यॉर्क बे और नारगांसेट बे शामिल हैं।

1790 बेंजामिन फ्रैंकलिन का निधन हुआ था। उन्हें सम्मानस्वरूप 100 डॉलर के नोट पर उनकी तस्वीर छापी गई। वे अमेरिका के प्रमुख राजनीतिज्ञ, दार्शनिक और पत्रकार रहे, किंतु वैज्ञानिक के रूप में पूरी दुनिया उन्हें जानती है। अमेरिका की आजादी के घोषणा-पत्र का मसौदा तैयार करने वाले 5 व्यक्तियों में से एक फ्रैंकलिन भी थे। बेंजामिन फ्रैंकलिन का जन्म 17 जनवरी, 1706 को अमेरिका के बोस्टन शहर में हुआ। उनके पिता साबुन और मोमबत्ती बनाते और बेचते थे। फ्रैंकलिन के 17 भाई-बहन थे। उन्होंने कई आविष्कार किए, लेकिन उन सब में तड़ित चालक सर्वाधिक सुपरिचित है।

1794 अंग्रेज प्राच्य विद्यापंडित और विधिशास्त्री तथा प्राचीन भारत संबंधी सांस्कृतिक अनुसंधानकर्ता विलियम जोंस का निधन हुआ।

1799 श्रीरंगपट्टनम की घेराबंदी शुरू हुई और 4 मई को टीपू सुल्तान की मौत के साथ इसका अंत हुआ।

1815 इंडोनेशिया में तमबोरा ज्वालामुखी धमाके के साथ फट गया था। देश के सुमबवा द्वीप पर स्थित यह ज्वालामुखी सैकड़ों वर्षों से शांत पड़ा था, लेकिन पांच अप्रैल को इसमें अचानक से कंपन होने लगा और 17 अप्रैल को इसमें भयंकर विस्फोट हुआ। घटना में करीब एक लाख लोग मारे गए।

1875 ब्राजील में जन्मे भारतीय ब्रिटिश सैन्य अधिकारी सर नेविले फ्रांसिस फिटजेराल्ड चैंबरलिन ने स्नूकर खेल ईजाद किया।

1895 चीन और जापान के बीच शिमोनोसेकी का समझौता हुआ।

1897 बंबई में इंचगिरी संप्रदाय के एक आध्यात्मिक गुरु निसर्गदत्त महाराज का जन्म हुआ। यह शैव अद्वैत धारा से संबंधित प्रसिद्ध संत सिद्धारामेश्वर महाराज के शिष्य थे।

1899 कलकत्ता को पनबिजली मिली।

1908 प्रख्यात उड़िया कवि एवं चिंतक राधानाथ राय का निधन हुआ।

1912 रूसी राजशाही सेना ने लीना नदी के पास पूर्वोत्तर साइबेरिया में हड़ताली स्वर्णकारों पर जमकर गोलियां बरसाईं जिससे डेढ़ सौ से अधिक लोग मरे और सैकड़ों घायल हुए। इसी दिन विख्यात भारतीय मलयालम कथाकार तकाजी सिवासंकरा पिल्लई का जन्म हुआ।

1916 सिरिमावो भंडारनायके का जन्म हुआ। वे श्रीलंका की एक प्रसिद्ध राजनीतिज्ञ हुईं और आधुनिक विश्व की पहली महिला प्रधानमंत्री थी। भंडारनायके श्रीलंका की फ्रीडम पार्टी की नेता थी। 1960 में वह दुनिया की पहली महिला प्रधानमंत्री बनी। भंडारनायके का सामाजिक कार्य श्रीलंका के ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों में महिलाओं और लड़कियों के जीवन को बेहतर बनाने पर केंद्रित था।

1923 विख्यात ब्रिटिश फिल्म निर्देशक लिंडसे एंडरसन का जन्म भारत के बंगलौर में हुआ।

1941 द्वितीय विश्व युद्ध के दौरान यूगोस्लाविया ने जर्मनी के समक्ष आत्मसमर्पण किया। इसी दिन किशोरियों, युवा महिलाओं के यौन शोषण के आरोप में जेल में बंद आसाराम बापू का जन्म हुआ।

1942 विख्यात पाकिस्तानी कव्वाल, गायक और संगीतकार अज़ीज़ मियां का जन्म दिल्ली में हुआ।

1946 सीरिया ने फ्रांस से आजादी मिलने की घोषणा की। इसी दिन प्रख्यात भारतीय सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता वीएस. श्रीनिवास शास्त्री का निधन हुआ।

1961 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय बिलियर्ड्स और स्नूकर खिलाड़ी गीत सेठी का जन्म हुआ।

1971 लीबिया, मिस्र और सीरिया ने मिल कर यूनाइटेड अरब स्टेट बनाने के लिए संघ का गठन किया। इसी दिन पीपुल्स रिपब्लिक ऑफ बांग्लादेश का गठन हुआ, आंदोलन का नेतृत्व शेख मुजीब उर-रहमान ने किया था।

1972 खूबसूरत, बोल्ड, लोकप्रिय अमेरिकी फिल्म एवं टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री तथा माॅडल जेनिफर अन्ने गार्नर का जन्म ह्यूस्टन, टेक्सास में हुआ। इसी दिन श्रीलंका के विश्व विख्यात स्पिनर मुथैया मुरलीधरन का जन्म हुआ। उनके नाम टेस्ट क्रिकेट में सबसे ज्यादा 800 विकेट लेने का रिकॉर्ड है।

1975 भारत के द्वितीय राष्ट्रपति डॉ. सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन का देहांत हुआ। 5 सितंबर 1888 को जन्मे डॉ. राधाकृष्णन के जन्मदिन पर शिक्षक दिवस मनाया जाता है। डॉ. राधाकृष्णन 27 बार नोबल पुरस्कार हेतु नामांकित हुए। 1954 में उन्हें भारत रत्न से सम्मानित किया गया। डॉ. राधाकृष्णन देश के पहले उपराष्ट्रपति और दूसरे राष्ट्रपति बने। 1975 में इसी दिन पोल पॉट के नेतृत्व में खमेर रूज ने कंबोडियन गृहयुद्ध में शहर नोम पेन्ह पर कब्जा कर लिया और डेमोक्रेटिक कम्पुचिया की स्थापना की।

1977 स्वतंत्रता पार्टी का जनता पार्टी में विलय हुआ। विख्यात भारतीय क्रिकेटर हुए दिनेश मोंगिया का चंडीगढ़ में इसी दिन जन्म हुआ।

1982 कनाडा ने अपना नया संविधान अपनाया। इसी दिन 1982 में अमेरिका ने नेवादा परीक्षण स्थल पर परमाणु परीक्षण किया।

1983 भारत ने एसएलवी-3 राकेट का प्रक्षेपण किया।

1986 सिसली और नीदरलैंड देशों के बीच युद्ध की स्थिति को खत्म करने की घोषणा करते हुए शांति बहाल की। इसी दिन हिंदुस्तानी शास्त्रीय संगीत एवं पाश्र्व गायिका मंजरी का जन्म तिरुअनंतपुरम में हुआ। इसी दिन दिल्ली में जाने माने टेलीविजन अभिनेता और माॅडल किंशुक महाजन का जन्म हुआ।

1989 जानी मानी दक्षिण भारतीय फिल्म अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल सुनयना का जन्म नागपुर, महाराष्ट्र में हुआ। इसी दिन 1989 में वर्ल्ड हीमोफीलिया डे मनाने की शुरुआत की गई। वर्ल्ड फेडरेशन ऑफ हीमोफीलिया के संस्थापक फ्रैंक कैनबेल के जन्मदिन पर 17 अप्रैल को वर्ल्ड हीमोफीलिया डे मनाया जाता है।

1993 अंतरिक्ष यान एसटीएस-56 डिस्कवरी धरती पर वापस लौटा।

1994 बेहद बोल्ड, खूबसूरत तेलुगू फिल्म अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल नैना गांगुली का जन्म कोलकाता में हुआ। कहते हैं कि इन्होंने अपनी बोल्डनेस से पोर्न स्टार, माॅडल और अभिनेत्री सन्नी लियोनी को लोकप्रियता में पछाड़ दिया है।

1995 पाकिस्तान में बाल मजदूरी को समाप्त कराने वाले युवा सामाजिक, राजनैतिक कार्यकर्ता इकबाल मसीह की हत्या हुई ।

1997 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय राजनीतिज्ञ, सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता तथा उड़ीसा के मुख्यमंत्री हुए बीजू पटनायक का निधन हुआ।

2001 राष्ट्रीय स्वयं सेवक संघ के करीबी हिंदी के उपन्यासकार, कहानीकार, नाटककार एवं व्यंग्यकार नरेंद्र कोहली का निधन हुआ।

2003 लगभग 55 वर्षों बाद भारत-ब्रिटेन संसदीय मंच का गठन हुआ।

2005 राजनेता और साहित्यकार तथा उत्तर प्रदेश एवं हिमाचल प्रदेश के राज्यपाल रहे विष्णु कांत शास्त्री का निधन हुआ।

2007 एशियाड 2014 के लिए दक्षिण कोरिया को मेजबानी मिली।

2008 ब्राजील व भारत के बीच चार महत्त्वपूर्ण संधी पर हस्ताक्षर किये गए। इसी दिन मुद्रास्फीति की दर 0.27ः गिरकर 7.14ः हुई। इसी दिन हानुंग टामस एण्ड टेक्सटाइल्स लिमिटेड ने चीन की कम्पनी को खरीदने के लिए सहमति ज्ञापन दिया। 

2013 न्यूजीलैंड ने समलैंगिक विवाह को कानूनी मान्यता प्रदान की। इसी दिन पश्चिम, टेक्सास, अमेरिका में एक उर्वरक कंपनी फैबिलिटी में हुए अमोनियम नाइट्रेट विस्फोट से 15 लोग मारे गए और 160 अन्य घायल हुए।

2014 विश्व विख्यात कोलंबियाई उपन्यासकार, पत्रकार, सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता, नाटककार ग्रैबिएल गार्सिया मार्खेज का देहांत हुआ। इसी दिन वयस्क मानव कोशिकाओं से स्टेम सेल सफलतापूर्वक  बना लेने की जानकारी दी गई।

2020 भारत में कोरोना वायरस संक्रमण के मामले आधिकारिक रूप से करीब 14000 बताए गये। गुजरात भारत का ऐसा छठा राज्य बना जहां कोविड मरीजों की संख्या 1000 से अधिक हुई।

2021 आधिकारिक तौर पर बताया गया कि भारत में कोरोना वायरस संक्रमण के 2.34 लाख नए मामले सामने आए। यह लगातार तीसरा दिन था जब देश में एक दिन में कोरोना के दो लाख से अधिक मामले सामने आए। दुनिया भर में कोरोना वायरस संक्रमितों की संख्या एक दिन की 1.50 करोड़ और मृतकों की संख्या 1.75 लाख के करीब पहुंची। 2021 में इसी दिन जाने माने फिल्मी हास्य अभिनेता, पार्श्वगायक और सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता विवेक का निधन हुआ।

1815 The Tambora volcano in Indonesia erupted with a bang. The volcano, located on the country's Sumbawa island, had been quiet for hundreds of years, but on April 5 it suddenly began to vibrate and on April 17, it erupted violently. About one lakh people died in the incident.
