1386 लिथुआनिया के ग्रैंड ड्यूक जोगैला पोलैंड के राजा व्लादिस्लॉ द्वितीय के स्थान पर राजा बने और जगिलोनियन राजवंश की शुरुआत की गई थी।

1793 जॉर्ज वॉशिंगटन ने अपने दूसरे कार्यकाल के लिए फिलाडेल्फिया में संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका के राष्ट्रपति के रूप में शपथ ग्रहण की।

1801 थॉमस जेफरसन को संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका के तीसरे राष्ट्रपति के रूप में शपथ दिलाई गईै। 1805 में इसी दिन फिर से थॉमस जेफरसन को संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका के राष्ट्रपति के रूप में दूसरे कार्यकाल के लिए शपथ दिलाई गई।

1809 जेम्स मैडिसन को संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका के चौथे राष्ट्रपति के रूप में चुने जाने के बाद शपथ दिलाई गई। 1813 में फिर से इसी दिन जेम्स मैडिसन को दूसरे कार्यकाल के लिए संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका के राष्ट्रपति के रूप में शपथ ग्रहण कराई गई।

1817 जेम्स मोनरो ने संयुक्त राज्य के पांचवें राष्ट्रपति के रूप में चुने जाने के बाद शपथ ग्रहण कर पहले दौर का कार्यकाल शुरु किया। 1821 में फिर से इसी दिन जेम्स मोनरो का संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका के राष्ट्रपति के रूप में चुने जाने के बाद शपथ ग्रहण कर दूसरा कार्यकाल शुरू हुआ।

1823 उस्मानी शासन और यूनान के बीच युद्ध में यूनानी सेना ने त्रिपोलिजा शहर में 12 हजार लोगों का नरसंहार किया।

1825 जाॅह्न क्विंसी एडम्स को अमेरिका के छठे राष्ट्रपति, 1829 एवं 1833 को एंड्रयू जैक्सन को, 1837 को मार्टिन वाॅन ब्यूरन को, 1841 को विलियम हेनरी हेरिसन को, 1881 को जेम्स ए गारफील्ड को, 1885 और 1893 को ग्रोवर क्लीवलैंड को, 1884 को बेंजामिन हैरिसन को, 1905 में थियोडोर रूजवेल्ट को, 1909 को विलियम हार्वड टाफ्ट को, 1913 को वुडरो विल्सन को अमेरिका के राष्ट्रपति पद की शपथ ग्रहण की। 1933 फ्रैंकलिन डी रुजवेल्ट ने अमेरिका के 32वें राष्ट्रपति पद की शपथ ली। राष्ट्रपति पद के लिए निवार्चित व्यक्ति पहले 4 मार्च को शपथ लिया करते थे। कई दशकों से अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति पद का शपथ ग्रहण समारोह अब 20 जनवरी को होता है।

1837 अमेरिका के तीसरे सबसे बड़े नगर शिकागो को शहर का दर्जा मिला। अगस्त 1833 में शिकागो की आबादी महज 200 के आसपास थी। सात साल के अंदर ये 4 हजार के पार पहुंच गई। 1971 में लगी भीषण आग में शिकागो शहर का काफी हिस्सा जलकर खाक हो गया। इसके बाद नए शहर का निर्माण शुरू हुआ। नए शिकागो में लकड़ी की इमारतों की जगह इस्पात और पत्थरों भवन बनाए गये। 1885 में यहां बनी बहुमंजिला इमारत को दुनिया की पहली बहुमंजिला इमारत माना गया।

1856 विख्यात भारतीय अंग्रेजी कवयित्री तोरु दत्त का जन्म हुआ।

1879 ब्रिटिश सरकार ने लड़कियों को उच्च शिक्षा देने के लिए कलकत्ता में बेथुन कॉलेज की स्थापना की। यह ब्रिटेन से बाहर पहला महिला कॉलेज था।

1881 प्राक्छायावादी युग के महत्त्वपूर्ण कवि रामनरेश त्रिपाठी का जन्म हुआ।

1883 अपने सैनिक होने के फर्ज को ठीक से अंजाम देने वाले, फौज में नियमानुसार सेवा देकर ब्रिटिश राज को खुश कर सबसे बड़ा युद्ध पुरस्कार विक्टोरिया क्रॉस प्राप्त करने वाले दरबान सिंह नेगी का जन्म चमोली में हुआ।

1886 मद्रास के प्रमुख स्वतंत्रता सेनानी बलुसु संबमूर्ति का जन्म हुआ।

1899 मध्य प्रदेश के विजयराघवगढ़ के राजकुमार और साहित्यकार ठाकुर जगमोहन सिंह का निधन हुआ।

1918 रेणुका देवी के नाम से सुपरिचित पाकिस्तानी टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री बेगम खुर्शीद मिर्ज़ा का जन्म अलीगढ़ में हुआ। इसी दिन स्पेनिश फ्लू का पहला ज्ञात मामला फोर्ट रिले, कंसास, अमेरिका में पहली रिकाॅर्ड किया गया।

1921 मशहूर उपन्यासकार फणीश्वर नाथ मंडल ‘रेणु’ का जन्म बिहार के अररिया जिले में हुआ। मैला आंचल, जुलूस, कितने चैराहे, पलटू बाबू रोड, अच्छे आदमी, मारे गए गुलफाम, लाल पान की बेगम, पंचलाइट उनकी मशहूर रचनाएं हैं। इसी दिन ननकाना के एक गुरुद्वारे के पास आयोजित असहयोग आंदोलन की एक सभा पर ब्रिटिश सैनिकों अंधाधुंध गोली चलाई जिसमें 70 से अधिक लोगों की जानें गई।

1922 संगीत नाटक अकादमी पुरस्कार प्राप्त प्रसिद्ध गुजराती रंगमंच और फिल्म अभिनेत्री, निर्देशिका तथा महिला अधिकारवादी संगठन नेशनल फेडरेशन आॅफ इंडियन वूमेन की अध्यक्ष दीना पाठक का जन्म अमरेली में हुआ।

1924 विख्यात फिल्म निर्माता और वितरक गुलशन राय का जन्म हुआ।

1928 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय अधिवक्ता और राजनेता सत्येन्द्र प्रसन्न सिन्हा का निधन हुआ।

1930 फ्रांस में आई भयंकर बाढ़ से करीब 700 से ज्यादा लोगों की मौत हुई।

1931 ब्रिटिश वायसराय, एडवर्ड फ्रेडरिक लंदल वुड और मोहनदास करमचंद गांधी की मुलाकात हुई, राजनीतिक कैदियों की रिहाई और नमक के सर्वजन उपयोग की छूट को लेकर बातचीत और समझौते की घोषणा हुई।

1936 अमेरिका में प्रमुख वित्तीय कंपनी इंटरनेशनल कैपिटल पार्टनर्स इंक के संस्थापक, कारोबारी अजीत गुणोत्तम हट्टीसिंग का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1939 भारतीय प्रशासनिक सेवा त्यागकर क्रांतिकारी बने और अमेरिका में भारतीयों को भारत की स्वतंत्रता के लिए प्रेरित, संगठित करने वाले गदर पार्टी के संस्थापकों में से एक लाला हरदयाल का निधन फिलाडेल्फिाया, पेंसिलवेनिया में हुआ।

1951 नई दिल्ली में पहले एशियाई खेलों का आयोजन किया गया।

1961 भारत के पहले विमान वाहक पोत आईएनएस विक्रांत ने सेना के लिए अपनी सेवाएं देनी शुरू कीं। 1971 के भारत-पकिस्तान युद्ध में विक्रांत ने अहम भूमिका निभाई थी।

1965 प्रख्यात बंगलादेशी लेखक, नाटककार, पटकथाकार और पत्रकार अनीसुल हक़ का जन्म हुआ।

1975 विश्व विख्यात फिल्म निर्माता, अभिनेता चार्ली चैपलिन को 85 साल की उम्र में नाइट की उपाधि से सम्मानित किया गया। चैपलिन ने द किड और ग्रेट डिक्टेटर, माॅडर्न टाइम्स जैसी तमाम फिल्में बनाईं। पूंजीवादी शोषण और सरकारों की जनविरोधी नीतियों का उन्होंने विरोध किया। उनके प्रसिद्ध कथनों में से 3 वचन यह हैं - इस मक्कार दुनिया में कुछ भी स्थायी नहीं हैं, हमारी मुसीबतें भी नहीं। सबसे दुःखी चीज, जिसकी मैं कल्पना कर सकता हूँ वो है विलासिता का आदी होना। हास्य टॉनिक है, राहत है, दर्द रोकने वाला है।

1977 रोमानिया में आये जबरदस्त भूकंप से लगभग 1541 लोगों की मौत हुई।

1980 विख्यात भारतीय टेनिस स्टार रोहन बोपन्ना का जन्म हुआ। बोपन्ना डबल्स के बेहतरीन खिलाड़ियों में हैं। 2017 में उन्होंने कनाडा की गैब्रिएला डबरोवस्की के साथ मिलकर फ्रेंच ओपन मिक्स डबल्स का खिताब जीता था।

1980 रॉबर्ट मुगाबे ने चुनाव में भारी जीत हासिल की और जिम्बाब्वे के पहले अश्वेत प्रधानमंत्री बने। चुनाव से महज 6 हफ्ते पहले ही मुगाबे दस साल का निर्वासन काटकर देश लौटे थे। इसके बाद भी चुनाव में उनकी पार्टी ने अश्वेतों के लिए आरक्षित 80 में से 57 सीटें जीतीं थी। श्वेत अल्पसंख्यकों का शासन खत्म होने के बाद जिम्बाब्वे में हुए ये पहले चुनाव थे। 1987 में मुगाबे देश के दूसरे राष्ट्रपति बने। इसके बाद 2017 तक वो इस पद पर रहे। 6 सितंबर 2019 को उनका निधन हो गया।

1980 जाने माने भारतीय पेशेवर टेनिस खिलाड़ी रोहन बोपन्ना का जन्म बंगलौर में हुआ।

1982 जाने माने बाॅलीवुड फिल्म निर्देशक और रेस्तरां संचालक कुणाल देशमुख का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1984 जानी मानी थिएटर कलाकार एवं फिल्म अभिनेत्री कामालिनी मुखर्जी का जन्म कलकत्ता में हुआ।

1987 जानी मानी, खूबसूरत, बोल्ड माॅडल और हिंदी, तमिल, तेलुगू, बंगाली, कन्नड़ आदि विभिन्न भारतीय भाषाओं की फिल्मों में अभिनय करने वाली श्रद्धा दास का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1988 नेहा सरगम के नाम से मशहूर, बोल्ड, खूबसूरत भारतीय हिंदी टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल नेहा दुबे का जन्म पटना में हुआ।

1989 टाइम और वॉर्नर कम्युनिकेशन ने अपने विलय की योजना का ऐलान किया।

1992 पत्रकारिता और जनसंचार विषयों के जाने माने लेखक, भारतीय कनाडाई उपन्यासकार गौरव शर्मा का जन्म दिल्ली में हुआ। उनका उपन्यास गाॅन आर द डेज काफी चर्चित हुआ।

1999 संयुक्त राष्ट्र के कर्मचारियों को अपनी परित्यक्ता पतनी एवं बच्चों को जीवन निर्वाह भत्ता देने की घोषणा हुई। 1999 में इसी दिन व्यापक परमाणु परीक्षण संधि पर हस्ताक्षर करने के भारत के साथ किसी गुप्त समझौते के समाचार का अमेरिका ने खंडन किया।

2000 चिली के पूर्व सैनिक तानाशाह जनरल आगस्टो पिनोशे ब्रिटेन द्वारा रिहा करने के बाद स्वदेश रवाना हुए।

2001 तालिबान ने मूर्तियों को खरीदने की ईरान की पेशकश ठुकराई।

2002 कूलम (ऑस्ट्रेलिया) में राष्ट्रमंडल शिखर सम्मेलन शुरू, पाकिस्तान को फिर शामिल करने से इन्कार, फिलिस्तीन ने इस्रायल से सभी सम्बन्ध तोड़े।

2006 अमेरिका के साथ राष्ट्रपति जॉर्ज बुश के दिल्ली आगमन पर भारत और अमेरिका के बीच ऐतिहासिक परमाणु समझौता सम्पन्न हुआ।

2008 आइगेट कॉर्पोरेशन ने फनी मूर्ति को अपना मुख्य परिचालन अधिकारी (सीईओ) नियुक्त किया। हमास के प्रमुख इस्माइल हानिया के दफ्तर पर इस्रायली युद्धक विमानों ने हमला किया। ईरान के राष्ट्रपति महमूद अहमदी नेजाद अपनी ऐतिहासिक यात्रा पर इराक पहुँचे। नेपाल सरकार ने पूर्वी पहाड़ी क्षेत्रों में अधिक स्वायत्तता की मांग को लेकर संघर्षरत देसी जातीय समूहों के एक गठबंधन से समझौता किया। संयुक्त राष्ट्र सुरक्षा परिषद ने ईरान नई पाबंदियाँ लागू की। इसी दिन 2008 में हिंदी लेखक डॉ. मदन लाल मधु को मीडिया यूनियन ने प्रतिष्ठित सम्मान स्वर्णाक्षर पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया।

2009 राजस्थान के पोखरन में ब्रह्मोस मिसाइल के नये संस्करण का परीक्षण किया गया। इसी दिन चुनाव आयोग ने 15वीं लोकसभा के चुनाव 16 अप्रैल से 13 मई के बीच 5 चरणों में सम्पन्न करने की घोषणा की। रिलायंस इंडस्ट्रीज लिमिटेड और उसकी अनुषंगी रिलायंस पेट्रोलियम के निवेशकों के निदेशकों के बोर्ड ने दोनों कम्पनियों के विलय के प्रस्ताव को मंजूदी दी। 2009 में इसी दिन अंतर्राष्ट्रीय अपराध न्यायालय ने दारफुर में युद्ध अपराधों के आरोपों में सूडान के उमर अल-बशीर के गिरफ्तारी वारंट जारी किए।

2011 कांग्रेस नेता और मध्यप्रदेश के पूर्व मुख्यमंत्री अर्जुन सिंह का निधन हुआ। सिंह 2004 से लेकर 2009 तक वे केंद्र सरकार में मानव संसाधन विकास मंत्री और पंजाब के राज्यपाल रहे।

2012 चार साल तक प्रधानमंत्री के रूप में काम करने के बाद व्लादिमीर पुतिन तीसरी बार रूस के राष्ट्रपति चुने गए। 7 मई 2012 को उन्होंने फिर से पदभार ग्रहण किया। इसी दिन पीपुल्स रिपब्लिक ऑफ चाइना ने अपने रक्षा खर्च में वर्ष 2012 में 11.2 प्रतिशत की वृद्धि की।

2013 मैक्सिकन बिजनेस मैग्नेट कार्लोस स्लिम फोर्ब्स के सबसे धनी लोगों की सूची में सबसे ऊपर पहुंचे। उनकी नेटवर्थ 73 बिलियन डॉलर की हुई। इसी दिन 2013 में इटली की राजधानी रोम स्थित इसाइयों के सर्वोच्च धार्मिक निकाय वेटिकन सिटी में 100 से अधिक कैथोलिक कार्डिनल बैठक करने पहुंचे जिससे पोप बेनेडिक्ट सोलहवें के उत्तराधिकारी के चयन की प्रक्रिया शुरू शुरु हुई।

2014 पवन दीवान का निधन हुआ। वे छत्तीसगढ़ राज्य निर्माण आंदोलन के प्रखर नेता, संत और कवि थे। इसी दिन राष्ट्रपति ओबामा ने अपना 2015 का बजट अमेरिकी कांग्रेस में पेश करते हुए घोषणा की कि यह सभी अमेरिकियों के लिए अच्छे वेतन और विस्तार के अवसरों के साथ नौकरियां पैदा करने का एक रोडमैप है।

2016 कांग्रेस नेता पीए संगमा का दिल का दौरा पड़ने से निधन हुआ। संगमा 1996 से 1998 तक लोकसभा के अध्यक्ष रहे थे। वो 1988 से 1990 तक मेघालय के मुख्यमंत्री भी रहे।

2021 प्रसिद्ध शास्त्रीय संगीतकार बी. एस. नारंग का निधन हुआ।

1809 James Madison is sworn in as the fourth President of the United States. Again in 1813, on this day, James Madison was sworn in as the President of the United States for a second term.

1817 James Monroe is sworn in as the fifth President of the United States, beginning his first term. Again in 1821, on this day, James Monroe began his second term by being sworn in as the President of the United States.

1823 In the war between Ottoman rule and Greece, the Greek army massacred 12 thousand people in the city of Tripolija.

1899 Thakur Jagmohan Singh, prince and litterateur of Vijayraghavgarh, Madhya Pradesh, passed away.

1918 Begum Khurshid Mirza, Pakistani television actress better known as Renuka Devi, was born in Aligarh. On this day the first known case of Spanish flu was first recorded in Fort Riley, Kansas, USA.

1921 Famous novelist Phanishwar Nath Mandal 'Renu' was born in Araria district of Bihar. Maila Aanchal, Juloos, Kitne Charahe, Paltu Babu Road, Acche Aadmi, Mar Gaye Gulfam, Lal Paan Ki Begum, Panchlight are his famous works. On the same day, British soldiers fired indiscriminately on a meeting of non-cooperation movement organized near a Gurudwara in Nankana, in which more than 70 people died.

1951 The first Asian Games were organized in New Delhi.

1961 India's first aircraft carrier INS Vikrant started serving for the army. Vikrant played an important role in the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971.

1965 Anisul Haque, noted Bangladeshi author, playwright, screenwriter, and journalist, was born.

1975 Charlie Chaplin, the world-renowned film producer and actor, was knighted at the age of 85. Chaplin made many films like The Kid and Great Dictator, Modern Times. He opposed capitalist exploitation and anti-people policies of the governments. 3 of his famous sayings are - Nothing is permanent in this wretched world, not even our troubles. The saddest thing I can imagine is being addicted to luxury. Humor is a tonic, a relief, a pain reliever.

1980 Rohan Bopanna, noted Indian tennis star, was born. Bopanna is one of the best doubles players. In 2017, she won the French Open mixed doubles title with Canada's Gabriela Dubrovsky.

1980 Robert Mugabe wins a landslide election and becomes Zimbabwe's first black prime minister. Just 6 weeks before the election, Mugabe had returned to the country after spending ten years in exile. Even after this, his party won 57 out of 80 seats reserved for blacks in the elections. These were the first elections held in Zimbabwe after the end of white minority rule. In 1987, Mugabe became the country's second president. After this, he remained on this post till 2017. He passed away on 6 September 2019.
