1885 मिकाडो, गिल्बर्ट और सुलिवन का सबसे अधिक बार प्रदर्शन किया जाने वाला ओपेरा, लंदन के सावॉय थिएटर में शुरू हुआ।

1913 विख्यात मलयालम साहित्यकार एस. के. पोट्टेक्काट्ट का जन्म हुआ।

1914 तुर्की और सर्बिया ने शांति समझौते पर हस्ताक्षर किये।

1926 लैटिन अमेरिकी देश कोस्टारिका में हुए एक रेल हादसे में 248 लोगों की मौत हुई और 93 घायल हुए।

1931 भारत की पहली सवाक यानी बोलती फिल्म आलम आरा का पहला शो मुंबई के मैजेस्टिक सिनेमा में 14 मार्च 1931 को दिखाया गया। शो 3 बजे शुरू होना था, लेकिन लोग सुबह 9 बजे ही सिनेमा हॉल के बाहर जमा हो गए थे। भीड़ को बेकाबू होता देख पुलिस बुलानी पड़ी थी, लाठी चार्ज भी हुआ। इस फिल्म की दीवानगी का आलम ये था कि इसके टिकट लोगों ने ब्लैक में 50-50 रुपए में खरीदे थे। जो उस जमाने में काफी बड़ी रकम हुआ करती थी। फिल्म एक राजकुमार और एक बंजारन लड़की की प्रेम कथा थी, जो जोसफ डेविड के लिखे एक पारसी नाटक पर आधारित थी। अर्देशिर ईरानी निर्देशित इस फिल्म में मास्टर विट्ठल, जुबैदा, जिल्लो, सुशीला और पृथ्वीराज कपूर ने भूमिका निभाई थी। इस फिल्म में 7 गाने थे। इसी फिल्म का दे दे खुदा के नाम पे को भारतीय सिनेमा का पहला गीत माना जाता है, जिसे वजीर मोहम्मद खान ने गाया था। फिल्म को फिरोजशाह एम मिस्त्री और बी ईरानी ने संगीतबद्ध किया था। इस दौर में महिलाओं का फिल्मों में काम करना अच्छा नहीं माना जाता था। इसलिए अभिनेत्री जुबैदा को शुरू में काफी मुश्किलों का सामना करना पड़ा। जुबैदा की दो बहनें सुल्ताना और शहजादी भी अभिनेत्री थीं। जुबैदा गुजरात के नवाब सिद्दी इब्राहिम की बेटी थीं। जुबैदा ने देवदास (1937) और मेरी जान जैसी पॉपुलर फिल्मों में काम किया। 124 मिनट की इस फिल्म को इम्पीरियल मूवीटोन नाम की प्रोडक्शन कंपनी ने प्रोड्यूस किया था। इस फिल्म का कोई प्रिंट नहीं बचा है। किसी भी रूप में यह फिल्म अब नहीं देखी जा सकती।

1929 संगीत नाटक अकादमी पुरस्कार एवं अन्य तमाम संगीत के लिए पुरस्कार, सम्मान प्राप्त ध्रुपद, रुद्रा वीणा वादक भारतीय शास्त्रीय संगीतज्ञ ज़िया मोहिउद्दीन डागर का जन्म उदयपुर में हुआ।

1939 स्लोवाकिया ने आजादी की घोषणा की।

1949 खूबसूरत, बोल्ड, लोकप्रिय बाॅलीवुड फिल्म अभिनेत्री तथा माॅडल फरीदा जलाल का जन्म दिल्ली में हुआ।

1955 राजकुमार महेंद्र नेपाल के राजा बने।

1958 मोनाको में शाही परिवार में राजकुमारी ग्रेस ने एक पुत्र को जन्म दिया, इस खुशी में 101 तोपों की सलामी दी गई।

1963 भारत के प्रमुख स्वतंत्रता सेनानी जयनारायण व्यास का निधन हुआ।

1965 खूबसूरत, बोल्ड, लोकप्रिय फिल्म अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल अनुराधा पटेल का जन्म हुआ।

1965 इजरायली मंत्रिमंडल ने पश्चिमी जर्मनी के साथ राजनयिक संबंध बहाल करने पर सहमति दी।

1965 लोकप्रिय बॉलीवुड अभिनेता, माॅडल और मिस्टर परफेक्सिनिस्ट कहे जाने वाले आमिर खान का जन्म हुआ। आमिर पहली बार 1973 में यादों की बारात फिल्म में बाल कलाकार के रूप में नजर आए थे। ग्यारह साल बाद 1984 में आई होली उनकी पहली फिल्म थी। उन्हें कयामत से कयामत तक से इंडस्ट्री में पहचान मिली।

1972 मणिपुर की मानवाधिकार कार्यकर्ता इरोम चानू शर्मिला का जन्म हुआ। जनविरोधी सुरक्षा कानून आफ्स्पा के विरोध में इन्होंने करीब 16 वर्ष अनशन किया। 1972 में इसी दिन इतालवी प्रकाशक गियानियाकोमो फेल्ट्रेलीली ने सोवियत लेखक बोरिस पास्टर्नक के उपन्यास डॉक्टर झिवागो का अनुवाद और प्रकाशन किया। कहते हैं कि सोवियत संघ में इसे छापने की मनाही थी और इसलिए चोरी-छुपे इसे इटली ले जाया गया।

1973 जाने माने फिल्मकार और अभिनेता रोहित शेट्टी का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1980 जानी मानी खूबसूरत, बोल्ड टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री एवं लेखिका अर्पिता पांडेय का जन्म लखनऊ में हुआ।

1983 तेल उत्पादक देशों के समूह ओपेक ने 23 साल में पहली बार तेल कीमतों में कटौती की।

1998 श्रीमती सोनिया गांधी भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस की अध्यक्ष बनीं। 16 दिसंबर 2017 तक लगातार 19 साल इस पद पर रहीं।

2011 सेंडाइ भूकंप के बाद टोक्यो स्टॉक एक्सचेंज व्यापार के पहले दिन पांच प्रतिशत से अधिक गिर गया।

2018 ब्रिटिश भौतिकशास्त्री और ब्रह्मांड-विज्ञानी स्टीफ़न विलियम हौकिंग का 76 वर्ष की आयु में निधन हुआ। ब्लैक होल पर काम करने वाले वैज्ञानिक और अ ब्रीफ हिस्ट्री ऑफ टाइम फ्रॉम दि बिग बैंग टू ब्लैक होल किताब लिखने वाले स्टीफन हॉकिंग कैम्ब्रिज यूनिवर्सिटी में सैद्धांतिक भौतिक विज्ञान और गणित के प्रोफेसर थे। शारीरिक विकलांगता के बावजूद उन्होंने ब्रह्मांड विज्ञान के क्षेत्र में कई अहम सिद्धांत दिए।

1931 The first show of India's first talkie film Alam Ara was shown on 14 March 1931 at the Majestic Cinema in Mumbai. The show was to start at 3 pm, but people had already gathered outside the cinema hall at 9 am. Seeing the crowd becoming uncontrollable, police had to be called, lathi charge was also done. Such was the craze of this film that people bought its tickets in black for Rs.50-50. Which used to be a huge amount in those days. The film was a love story of a prince and a banjaran girl, based on a Parsi play by Joseph David. Directed by Ardeshir Irani, the film starred Master Vitthal, Zubeidaa, Jillow, Sushila and Prithviraj Kapoor. There were 7 songs in this film. De De Khuda Ke Naam Pe from the same film is considered to be the first song in Indian cinema, which was sung by Wazir Mohammad Khan. The music for the film was composed by Ferozeshah M Mistry and B Irani. During this period, it was not considered good for women to work in films. That's why actress Zubaida had to face a lot of difficulties in the beginning. Zubaida's two sisters Sultana and Shehzadi were also actresses. Zubaida was the daughter of Nawab Siddi Ibrahim of Gujarat. Zubaida acted in popular films like Devdas (1937) and Meri Jaan. This 124-minute film was produced by a production company named Imperial Movietone. No prints of this film have survived. In any form this film cannot be seen now.
