788 ईस्वी सन 788 में 26 जनवरी को कैप्टन आर्थर फिलिप और ब्रिटिश फर्स्ट फ्लाइट वर्तमान सिडनी में पोर्ट जैक्सन के तट पर सिडनी कोव में उतरे, ऑस्ट्रेलिया में पहली स्थायी यूरोपीय बस्ती की स्थापना की।

ब्रिटिश शासन से पूर्ण मुक्ति हेतु 26 जनवरी 1930 को कांग्रेस ने देश की पूर्ण आजादी या पूर्ण स्वराज का नारा दिया था। इसलिए संविधान लागू करने के लिए भी 26 जनवरी का इंतजार किया गया। 1929 में जवाहरलाल नेहरू की अध्यक्षता में कांग्रेस के लाहौर अधिवेशन में पहली बार पूर्ण स्वराज की शपथ ली गई थी। उस अधिवेशन में अंग्रेज सरकार से मांग की गई थी कि भारत को 26 जनवरी 1930 तक संप्रभु दर्जा दे दिया जाए। फिर 26 जनवरी 1930 को पहली बार पूर्ण स्वराज या स्वतंत्रता दिवस मनाया गया था। फिर जैसा कि हम सब जानते हैं 15 अगस्त 1947 तक यानी अगले 17 वर्षों तक 26 जनवरी को ही स्वतंत्रता दिवस मनाया जाता रहा। इस दिन के महत्व की वजह से ही 1950 में 26 जनवरी को देश का संविधान लागू किया गया और इसे गणतंत्र दिवस घोषित किया गया। मतलब 25 जनवरी 1950 तक भारत एक तरह से ब्रिटिश कानूनों के हिसाब से ही चल रहा था। भारत के गणतंत्र बनने की घोषणा देश के आखिरी गवर्नर-जनरल सी. राजगोपालाचारी ने की थी। भारत 26 जनवरी 1950 को सुबह 10 बजकर 18 मिनट पर गणतंत्र बना था और इसके 6 मिनट बाद 10.24 मिनट पर डॉ. राजेंद्र प्रसाद ने देश के पहले राष्ट्रपति के रूप में शपथ ली थी। पहले गणतंत्र दिवस समारोह में राजेंद्र प्रसाद ने 21 तोपों की सलामी के साथ तिरंगा फहराया। उन्होंने हिंदी और इंग्लिश दोनों भाषाओं में भाषण दिया था। तब से हर साल 26 जनवरी को गणतंत्र दिवस को एक राष्ट्रीय उत्सव के तौर पर मनाया जाता है। देश 15 अगस्त 1947 को आजाद हुआ था। इससे एक साल पहले यानी 9 दिसंबर 1946 को तय हुआ कि भारत का अपना संविधान होगा और इसके लिए संविधान सभा बनाई गई थी। 2 साल 11 महीने और 18 दिन तक चली मैराथन बैठकों के बाद संविधान बना और 26 नवंबर 1949 को संविधान सभा ने इसे मंजूरी दी, जो 26 जनवरी 1950 को लागू हुआ। तमाम देशों के संविधानों के अध्ययन और काफी चिंतन-मनन के बाद अथक परिश्रम कर डाॅ. भीमराव अंबेडकर ने संविधान रचा।

1500 स्पैनिश नाविक, खोजकर्ता, और विजेता विजेंता विसेंट यानेज पिंज़ोन आज के ब्राजील के उत्तरी तट पर पहुंचा।

1556 भारत के दूसरे मुगल शासक हुमायूं की सीढियों से गिरने के कारण मौत हुई।

1564 लिवोनियन युद्ध में लिथुआनियाई हमले संख्यात्मक रूप से बेहतर रूसी सेना की आश्चर्यजनक और निर्णायक हार हुई।

1699 ऑस्ट्रो ओटोमन युद्ध को समाप्त करने के लिए कार्लोविट्ज की संधि पर हस्ताक्षर हुए जिससे सेंट्रल यूरोपिया के अधिकांश हिस्से में ओटोमन नियंत्रण का अंत और हबसबर्ग राजशाही के उदय का कारण बना।

1666 फ्रांस ने इंग्लैड के विरुद्ध युद्ध की घोषणा की।

1748 ब्रिटेन, नीदरलैंड, ऑस्ट्रेलिया और सार्डिनिया ने फ्रांस विरोधी संधि पर साल हस्ताक्षर किए।

1823 प्रसिद्ध कायचिकित्सक एडवर्ड जेनर का देहावसान हुआ।

1841 हांगकांग ब्रिटिश कब्जे में चला गया। कमोडोर सर जेम्स ब्रेमर ने पोजिशन पॉइंट पर ब्रिटिश झंडा यूनियन जैक खड़ा किया और औपचारिक रूप से हांगकांग को ब्रिटिश साम्राज्य के लिए एक कॉलोनी के रूप में दावा किया।

1845 ब्रिटिश जनरल चार्ल्स गार्डन सूडान में मारे गये।

1837 मिशिगन को अमेरिका का 26वां प्रांत बनाया गया। इससे पहले फ्रांस की हार के बाद यह ब्रिटिश शासन के अधीन था, अमेरिकी क्रांतिकारी युद्द के बाद मिशगन को संयुक्त राज्य को सौंपा गया था।

1918 रेड गार्ड्स के एक समूह ने फिनिश सिविल वॉर की शुरुआत को प्रतीकात्मक रूप से चिह्नित करने के लिए हेलसिंकी वर्कर्स हॉल के टॉवर के ऊपर एक लाल लालटेन लटका दिया। 1918 में इसी दिन विख्यात भारतीय राजनीतिज्ञ भगवत दयाल शर्मा का जन्म हुआ।

1923 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय कवि देवनाथ पाण्डेय रसाल का जन्म हुआ।

1930 ब्रिटिश शासन के अंतर्गत भारत में पहली बार स्वतंत्रता दिवस मनाया गया।

1931 सविनय अवज्ञा आंदोलन के दौरान ब्रिटिश सरकार से बातचीत के लिए महात्मा गांधी को रिहा किया गया।

1933 प्रख्यात फिल्म निर्देशक अनिल गांगुली का जन्म हुआ।

1934 पौलैंड और जर्मनी के बीच दस वर्षीय अनाक्रमण संधि हुई।

1950 स्वतंत्र भारत के पहले और अंतिम गवर्नर जनरल चक्रवर्ती राजगोपालाचारी ने अपने पद से त्यागपत्र दिया और डॉ. राजेंद्र प्रसाद देश के पहले राष्ट्रपति बने। 1950 में इसी दिन उत्तर प्रदेश के सारनाथ स्थित अशोक स्तंभ के शेरों को राष्ट्रीय प्रतीक की मान्यता मिली। इसी दिन 1937 गठित भारतीय संघीय न्यायालय फैडेरल कोर्ट ऑफ इंडिया का नाम बदलकर सर्वोच्च न्यायालय या सुप्रीम कोर्ट ऑफ इंडिया कर दिया गया।

1954 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय क्रान्तिकारी मानवेंद्र नाथ राय का देहांत हुआ।

1956 राष्ट्रीय फिल्म पुरस्कार प्राप्त जाने माने भारतीय सिनेमाटोग्राफर पीसी श्रीराम का जन्म चेन्नई में हुआ। इसी दिन इटली के कोर्तिना डी अम्पेजो शहर में शीतकालीन ओलंपिक की शुरआत हुई।

1958 दक्षिणी अवाजी द्धीप के पास जापानी नाव ननकई डूब गई जिससे करीब 167 लोगों की मौत हो गई।

1960 जाने माने भारतीय अमेरिकी फिजीसिस्ट, थ्योरीटिकल कोस्मोलोजिस्ट एवं एस्ट्रोपार्टिकल फिजीसिस्ट भरत विष्णु रात्रा का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1963 मोर के अद्भुत सौंदर्य के कारण भारत सरकार ने इसे राष्ट्रीय पक्षी घोषित किया।

1966 जानी मानी भारतीय लेखिका अनीता नायर का जन्म हुआ।

1967 प्रख्यात भारतीय पार्श्वगायक प्रदीप सोमासुंदरन का जन्म हुआ।

1968 जाने माने तेलुगू फिल्म अभिनेता रवि तेजा का जन्म जग्गमपेटा में हुआ। इसी दिन प्रसिद्ध स्वतंत्रता सेनानी माधव श्रीहरि अणे का देहावसान हुआ।

1972 जानी मानी भारतीय टेलीविजन हस्ती मारिया गोरेट्टी का जन्म गोवा में हुआ। 1972 में इसी दिन शहीद सैनिकों की याद में दिल्ली के इंडिया गेट पर राष्ट्रीय स्मारक अमर जवान ज्योति की स्थापना की गयी। इंदिरा गांधी द्वारा स्थापित इस मशाल को अब मोदी सरकार द्वारा बुझा दिया गया है।

1976 जानी मानी फिल्म एवं टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री तथा माॅडल वंदना वैद्य पाठक का जन्म अहमदाबाद में हुआ।

1978 जाने माने दक्षिण भारतीय फिल्म अभिनेता एवं माॅडल ओम प्रकाश का जन्म कोयंवटूर में हुआ। इसी दिन अमरीकी प्रयासों से हुए कैम्प डेविड समझौते के आधार पर अतिग्रहणकारी इस्राइल ने मिस्र को सीना प्रायद्वीप लौटाया और बदले में मिस्र ने इस्राइल के अस्तित्व को औपचारिक रुप से स्वीकार किया।

1980 जाने माने लेखक, अभिनेता, आलोचक, गीतकार, काॅमेडियन वरुण ग्रोवर का जन्म हुआ। इन्हें 2015 में राष्ट्रीय फिल्म पुरस्कार राष्ट्रपति प्रणब मुखर्जी द्वारा प्रदान किया गया।

1981 जानी मानी खूबसूरत, बोल्ड दक्षिण भारतीय फिल्म अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल मोनाल नवल का दिल्ली में जन्म हुआ और इसी दिन पूर्वोत्तर भारत में हवाई यातायात सुगम बनाने को हवाई सेवा वायुदूत प्रारम्भ हुई।

1982 पर्यटकों को विलासितापूर्ण रेल यात्रा का आनंद दिलाने के लिए भारतीय रेल ने पैलेस ऑन व्हील्स सेवा शुरू की।

1985 जानी मानी खूबसूरत, बोल्ड माॅडल और अभिनेत्री कीरत भट्ठल का जन्म हुआ।

1987 जानी मानी खूबसूरत, बोल्ड टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री, डांसर और माॅडल भारती कुमार का दिल्ली में जन्म हुआ।

1991 जानी मानी कोरियोग्राफर, डांस इंडिया डांस की विजेता, टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री और माॅडल रजस्मिता कर का जन्म राउरकेला, उड़ीसा में हुआ। जाने माने भारतीय क्रिकेटर विजय शंकर का जन्म चेन्नई में हुआ।

1994 पाकिस्तान के रावलपिंडी में प्रथम महिला पुलिस थाने का उद्घाटन।

1998 एक राष्ट्रीय टेलीविजन प्रेस कॉन्फ्रेंस में, अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति बिल क्लिंटन ने आंतरिक मोनिका लेविंस्की के साथ यौन संबंध होने से इनकार किया। जबकि यह झूठ था। बाद में प्रमाणों से संबंध सिद्ध हुए।

1999 महिलाओं के यौन शोषण पर विश्व सम्मेलन का बांग्लादेश के ढाका में आयोजन।

2000 कोंकण रेलवे परियोजना पूर्ण हुई और प्रथम यात्री गाड़ी चलाई गयी।

2001 गुजरात के भुज में आए जबरदस्त भूकंप में हजारों लोगों की जाने गयी। 2001 में भारत के पश्चिमी हिस्से में जोरदार भूकंप से गुजरात कांप उठा था। इसमें हजारों लोगों की मौत हुई थी। गुजरात का भुज शहर बुरी तरह प्रभावित हुआ था। भूकंप की तीव्रता रिक्टर स्केल पर 6.9 से 7.9 के बीच थी। इसका असर पाकिस्तान, बांग्लादेश, नेपाल और साउथ इंडिया तक पर पड़ा था। हजारों की संख्या में लोग इमारतों के मलबे में दब गए थे। भुज के एक स्कूल में 400 से ज्यादा बच्चे दब गए थे। 2001 में इसी दिन प्रसिद्ध भारतीय पाश्र्व गायिका लता मंगेश्कर और प्रख्यात शहनाई वादक उस्ताद बिस्मिल्ला खाँ को को भारत का सर्वोच्च सम्मान भारत रत्न प्रदान किया गया।

2003 गणतंत्र दिवस समारोह में ईरान के राष्ट्रपति सैयद मोहम्म्द खातमी शामिल हुए।

2004 माइक्रोसॉफ्ट अध्यक्ष बिल गेट्स को ब्रिटेन की महारानी एलिजाबेथ ने नाइट की उपाधि प्रदान करने की घोषणा की। इसी दिन 2004 में अफगानिस्तान के राष्ट्रपति हामिद करजई ने नए संविधान पर हस्ताक्षर किए।

2005 विश्व प्रसिद्ध इतिहासकार विलियम दाएकिन का देहावसान हुआ।

2008 59वें गणतन्त्र दिवस के अवसर पर देश की पहली महिला राष्ट्रपति प्रतिभा देवी सिंह पाटिल ने परेड की सलामी ली। इसी दिन एन.आर. नारायणमूर्ति को फ्रांस सरकार के सर्वोच्च नागरिक सम्मान द ऑफिसर ऑफ द लीजन ऑफ ऑवर से सम्मानित किया गया।

2010  भारत की पहली महिला राष्ट्रपति एवं क्रमानुसार 12वीं राष्ट्रपति प्रतिभा देवी सिंह पाटिल ने पद्म पुरस्कार पाने वाली 130 व्यक्तियों के नामों की घोषणा की। इनमें रंगमंच जगत् की किंवदंति इब्राहिम-अल-काजी और जोहरा सहगल, ऑस्कर विजेता संगीतकार अल्लाह रक्खा रहमान और रसूल पोकुटटी, मशहूर फिल्म अदाकारा रेखा और आमिर खान, फार्मूला रेसर नारायण कार्तिकेयन, बैडमिंटन खिलाड़ी सायना नेहवाल क्रिकेटर सचिन तेंदुलकर के गुरु रमाकांत आचरेकर और क्रिकेटर वीरेंद्र सहवाग शामिल हैं। इसी दिन 2010 में जेम्स कैमरन की फिल्म अवतार अब तक की सबसे ज्यादा कमाई करने वाली फिल्म बनी। इसने अपनी खुद की फिल्म टाइटैनिक के राजस्व का रिकॉर्ड पार कर लिया।

2012 प्रख्यात पंजाबी, हिंदी और उर्दू साहित्यकार करतार सिंह दुग्गल का निधन हुआ।

2014 अंडमान और निकोबार द्धीप समूह में एक पर्यटक नाव डूब गई जिसमें लगभग 21 लोग मारे गए। 26 जनवरी 2014 को स्टानिस्लास वावरिंका ने अपना पहला ग्रैंड स्लैम खिताब जीता। उन्होंने 2014 के ऑस्ट्रेलियाई ओपन फाइनल में राफेल नडाल को हराया।

2017 प्रसिद्ध रुसी राजनीतिज्ञ एजेक्जेंडर मिखाइलोविच कदाकिन का निधन हुआ।

2020 इकतालीस वर्षीय अमेरिकी बास्केटबॉल खिलाड़ी कोबी ब्रायंट की हेलीकॉप्टर दुर्घटना में मौत हुई।

Rajagopalachari. India became a republic on 26 January 1950 at 10.18 am and 6 minutes later at 10.24 Dr. Rajendra Prasad was sworn in as the country's first President. In the first Republic Day celebrations, Rajendra Prasad hoisted the tricolor with a salute of 21 guns. He gave speech in both Hindi and English languages. Since then, every year on 26 January, Republic Day is celebrated as a national festival. The country became independent on 15 August 1947. A year before this i.e. on 9 December 1946, it was decided that India would have its own constitution and for this the Constituent Assembly was formed. After marathon meetings lasting 2 years, 11 months and 18 days, the constitution was formed and approved by the Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949, which came into force on 26 January 1950. After studying the constitutions of all the countries and after a lot of thinking and hard work, Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar made the constitution.

1960 Bharat Vishnu Ratra, noted Indian-American physicist, theoretical cosmologist and astroparticle physicist, was born in Bombay.

1963 Due to the amazing beauty of peacock, the Government of India declared it as the national bird.

1966 Anita Nair, noted Indian author, was born.

1967 Pradeep Somasundaran, noted Indian playback singer, was born.

1968 Ravi Teja, noted Telugu film actor, was born in Jaggampeta. On this day the famous freedom fighter Madhav Srihari Ane passed away.

1972 Maria Goretti, well-known Indian television personality, was born in Goa. On this day in 1972, the National Memorial Amar Jawan Jyoti was established at Delhi's India Gate in memory of the martyred soldiers. This torch set by Indira Gandhi has now been extinguished by the Modi government.

1976 Vandana Vaidya Pathak, noted film and television actress and model, was born in Ahmedabad.

1978 Om Prakash, noted South Indian film actor and model, was born in Coimbatore. On the same day, on the basis of the Camp David Accords through US efforts, occupying Israel returned the Sina Peninsula to Egypt and in return Egypt formally accepted Israel's existence.

1980 Varun Grover, noted writer, actor, critic, lyricist, comedian, was born. He was presented with the National Film Award in 2015 by President Pranab Mukherjee.

1981 Famous beautiful, bold South Indian film actress and model Monal Naval was born in Delhi and on this day air service Vayudoot started to facilitate air traffic in Northeast India.

1982 Indian Railways started Palace on Wheels service to provide luxury train travel to the tourists.

1985 Kirat Bhattal, well-known beautiful, bold model and actress, was born.

1987 Bharti Kumar, well-known beautiful, bold television actress, dancer, and model, was born in Delhi.

1991 Rajasmita Kar, noted choreographer, Dance India Dance winner, television actress and model, was born in Rourkela, Odisha. Renowned Indian cricketer Vijay Shankar was born in Chennai.

1994 Inauguration of the first women's police station in Rawalpindi, Pakistan.

1998 In a nationally televised press conference, US President Bill Clinton denies having had a sexual relationship with intern Monica Lewinsky. Even though it was a lie. Later on the proofs proved the relationship.

1999 World Conference on Sexual Exploitation of Women held in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

2000 The Konkan Railway project was completed and the first passenger train was run.

Thousands of people lost their lives in the 2001 Bhuj earthquake in Gujarat. In 2001 Gujarat was shaken by a strong earthquake in the western part of India. Thousands of people died in this. The city of Bhuj in Gujarat was badly affected. The intensity of the earthquake was between 6.9 to 7.9 on the Richter scale. Its impact was on Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and even South India.
