1554 ब्राजील के साओ पाउलो शहर की स्थापना हुयी। जेसुइट मिशनरियों जोस डी अंचीटा और मनोएल दा नोब्रेगा ने साओ पाउलो डॉस कैंपोस डी पिरेटिनिंगा में एक मिशन की स्थापना की, जो साओ पाउलो, ब्राजील बन गया।

1565 तेल्लीकोटा की लड़ाई में विजयनगर साम्राज्य नष्ट हुआ।

1576 पुर्तगाली खोजकर्ता पाउलो डिआस डी नोवाइस ने अफ्रीका के पश्चिमी तट पर साओ पाउलो दा असम्पाको दे लोंडा की स्थापना की, जिसे अब लुआंडा के रूप में जाना जाता है।

1579 डच गणराज्य की स्थापना हुई।

1627 महान वैज्ञानिक रॉबर्ट बॉयल का जन्म आयरलैंड के मुंस्टर शहर में हुआ था। रॉबर्ट ने बॉयल का सिद्धांत दिया था। बॉयल अपने 14 भाई- बहनों में 10वें नंबर पर थे। बचपन से ही पढ़ाकू रॉबर्ट को इंग्लिश के अलावा फ्रेंच और लैटिन भाषा में भी महारत हासिल थी। इसके अलावा उन्होंने हिब्रू, ग्रीक और सीरियैक भाषा भी सीखी। उनकी शुरुआती शिक्षा ईटन कालिल स्कूल से हुई। इसके तीन साल बाद वे यूरोप की यात्रा पर चले गए। 1641 में 14 साल की उम्र में उनकी उनकी मुलाकात महान वैज्ञानिक गैलीलियो हुई और इस मुलाकात ने ही उन्हें आगे चलकर वैज्ञानिक बनने के लिए प्रेरित किया। इसके बाद बॉयल ने ऑक्सफोर्ड यूनिवर्सिटी में प्रवेश लिया। रॉबर्ट को फिजिक्स में बॉयल के सिद्धांत के लिए जाना जाता है। बॉयल सिद्धांत में प्रेशर के घटने और बढ़ने से हवा में कैसे बदलाव होता है, इसे समझाया गया है। 30 दिसंबर 1691 में 64 वर्ष की उम्र रॉबर्ट बॉयल का निधन हो गया था।

1755 रूस में मॉस्को विश्वविद्यालय की स्थापना हुई।

1791 ब्रिटिश संसद ने संवैधानिक अधिनियम 1791 पारित किया, क्वीबेक के पुराने प्रांत को ऊपरी और निचले कनाडा में विभाजित किया।

1824 बांग्ला भाषा के बहुप्रतिष्ठित कवि और प्रमुख नाटककार माइकल मधुसूदन दत्त का जेसोर जिला बंगलादेश में जन्म हुआ।

1831 पौलैंड की संसद ने स्वतंत्रता की घोषणा की।

1839 चिली में आये भूकम्प से लगभग 10,000 से ज्यादा लोगों की मौत हुई।

1862 जस्टिस महादेव गोविंद रानाडे की पत्नी, पहली मानवाधिकार कार्यकर्ता कही गईं, प्रमुख सामाजिक कार्यकत्री रमाबाई रानाडे का जन्म कुरलेकर परिवार में बाॅम्बे प्रेसीडेंसी में हुआ।

1874 विश्व विख्यात ब्रिटिश साहित्यकार समरसेट मॉम का जन्म हुआ।

1880 भारतीय ब्रह्म समाज की शुरूआत प्रसिद्ध समाज सुधारक केशव चंद्र सेन ने की।

1881 अमेरिकी वैज्ञानिकों एलेक्जेंडर ग्राहम बेल और थॉमस अल्वा एडीसन ने ओरिएंटल टेलीफोन कंपनी बनायी।

1882 विख्यात अंग्रेज साहित्यकार और निबंधकार वर्जीनिया वुल्फ का जन्म।

1897 विख्यात पाकिस्तानी सुन्नी इस्लामी उलेमा, धर्मगुरु मुहम्मद शफी देवबंदी का जन्म देवबंद में हुआ।

1904 पेंसिल्वेनिया के चेस्विक में हुए कोयला खदान विस्फोट में 179 लोगों की मौत हो गयी।

1918 भारतीय राष्ट्रीय काँग्रेस के अध्यक्ष विलियम वेडरबर्न का निधन हुआ।

1924 फ्रांस के शैमॉनिक्स में पहले शीतकालीन ओलंपिक खेलों का आयोजन।

1930 भारत के प्रसिद्ध साहित्यकार और हिंदुस्तान टाइम्स ग्रुप की लोकप्रिय पत्रिका कादंबिनी के कई दशकों तक सम्पादक रहे राजेन्द्र अवस्थी का जन्म हुआ।

1947 प्रिंस वेल्फ एरंस्ट आॅफ हनोवर, जर्मनी के हनोवर के राजकुमार का जन्म जर्मनी में हुआ। आचार्य रजनीश ओशो के शिष्य प्रिंस वेल्फ एरंस्ट का निधन 10 जनवरी 1981 को पुणे के ओशो कम्यून में हुआ। 

1949 एकेडमी ऑफ टेलीविजन आर्ट्स एंड साइंसेज ने अमेरिकी टेलीविजन उद्योग में उत्कृष्टता के लिए पहले एमी पुरस्कार प्रदान किये।

1952 सार के प्रशासन पर जर्मनी और फ्राँस के बीच विवाद हुआ।

1953 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय व्यापारी, उद्योगपति और सार्वजनिक नेता नलिनी रंजन सरकार का निधन हुआ।

1955 जाने माने भारतीय अर्थशास्त्री बिबेक देवराॅय का जन्म हुआ। पनामा और अमेरिका ने 1955 में इसी दिन नहर संधि पर हस्ताक्षर किये।

1958 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय हिंदी सिनेमा पार्श्व गायिका कविता कृष्णमूर्ति का दिल्ली में जन्म हुआ।

1959 ब्रिटेन ने पूर्वी जर्मनी से व्यापार समझौता किया।

1962 बंबई के बेहद चर्चित पुलिस अधिकारी और करीब 300 एनकाउंटर कराने वाले प्रदीप सावंत का जन्म ठाणे में हुआ।

1969 दक्षिण भारतीय सिनेमा की जानी मानी अभिनेत्री उर्वशी यानी कविता रंजिनी का जन्म केरल की वर्तमान राजधानी तिरुअनंतपुरम में हुआ। उत्तरी विएतनाम और अमेरिका के बीच 25 जनवरी 1969 कों पेरिस में शांति वार्ता प्रारंभ हुई। इसी दिन विख्यात भारतीय अंग्रेजी लेखक, कथाकार अश्विन सांघी का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1971 हिमाचल प्रदेश को पूर्ण राज्य घोषित किया गया। इसी दिन 1971 में युगांडा में आठ साल सैन्य कार्रवाई कर राष्ट्रपति मिल्टन ओबोटे से एक सैन्य तख्तापलट में ईदी अमीन दादा ने सत्ता छीन ली।

1974 जानी मानी कैनेडियन-अमेरिकन गायिका और गीत लेखिका एमिली हैंस का जन्म नई दिल्ली में हुआ। वास्तविक नाम एमिली सावित्री हैंस है। इसी दिन फॉसिल्स बैंड के मुख्य गायक, प्रसिद्ध भारतीय गायक, गीतकार तथा संगीतकार रूपम इस्लाम का जन्म कलकत्ता में हुआ।

1975 शेख मुजीबुर्रहमान बांगलादेश के राष्ट्रपति बने।

1979 जाने माने फिल्म अभिनेता शारिब हासमी का जन्म हुआ।

1980 तीन साल के अंतराल के बाद पद्म विभूषण, भारत रत्न,आदि नागरिक सम्मान दोबारा प्रदान किये जाने शुरुआत हुई।

1980 प्रसिद्ध ईसाई मिशनरी समाजसेवी मदर टेरेसा को भारत रत्न से सम्मानित किया गया।

1983 आचार्य विनोबा भावे को मरणोपरांत सर्वोच्च नागरिक सम्मान भारत रत्न से सम्मानित किया गया।

1980 जाने माने भारतीय क्रिकेटर चेतेश्वर पुजारा का जन्म गुजरात के राजकोट में हुआ। इसी दिन सूरीनाम के राष्ट्रपति के पद की रामसेवक शंकर ने शपथ ग्रहण की।

1985 त्रिनीडाड एवं वेस्ट इंडीज के विख्यात क्रिकेटर लेंडल मार्क प्लैटर सिमंस पोर्ट आफ स्पेन त्रिनीडाड एंड टोबेगो में जन्म हुआ।

1988 कन्नड़ की जानी मानी खूबसूरत, बोल्ड अभिनेत्री एवं टेलीविजन एंकर अनुश्री का जन्म सूरतकल में हुआ। इसी दिन जाने माने भारतीय हिंदी टेलीविजन अभिनेता और माॅडल विशाल आदित्य सिंह का जन्म आरा, बिहार में हुआ।

1990 बाॅलीवुड की जानी मानी नृत्यांग्ना, स्टेज शो परफाॅरमर, टीवी एवं फिल्म अभिनेत्री पूजा सावंत का जन्म बंबई में हुआ। इसी दिन इंग्लैंड में 1990 में आये तूफान से बच्चों समेत लगभग 50 से अधिक लोगों की जाने गयी।

1992 रूसी राष्ट्रपति बोरिस येल्त्सिन ने अमेरिकी शहरों को लक्ष्य करके तैनात परमाणु प्रक्षेपास्त्र हटाने की घोषणा की।

1994 तुर्की का प्रथम दूरसंचार उपग्रह तुर्कसैट प्रथम अटलांटिक महासागर में गिरा।

1999 दक्षिण अमेरिका के कोलंबिया में आये भूकंप से करीब 300 लोगों की मौत हो गई और 1000 अन्य घायल हो गये।

2001 ग्वालियर राजघराने की रानी और प्रमुख भाजपा महिला राजनीतिज्ञ विजयाराजे सिंधिया का देहावसान हुआ।

2002 भारतीय वायु सेना के पहले एयर मार्शल अर्जुन सिंह बने।

2003 चीन के लोकतंत्र समर्थक नेता फेंग जू को देश निकाला दिया गया।

2004 अंतरिक्ष यान ऑपर्च्युनिटी मंग्रल ग्रह पर सफलतापूर्वक उतरा।

2005 महाराष्ट्र के सातारा स्थित एक देवी के मंदिर में भगदड़ मचने से 300 से अधिक मरे।

2008 उत्तर प्रदेश की मुख्यमंत्री मायावती ने गंगा-एक्सप्रेस वे परियोजना को मंजूरी प्रदान की। इसी दिन केंद्र सरकार ने 13 लोगों को वर्ष 2008 के प्रतिष्ठित नागरिक अलंकरण पद्म विभूषण से सम्मानित करने की घोषण की। इसी दिन पाकिस्तानी सेना ने परमाणु हथियार ले जाने में सक्षम मध्यम दूरी के प्रक्षेपास्त्र शाहीन-4 (हत्फ-4) का सफल परीक्षण किया।

2009 केन्द्र सरकार ने पद्मभूषण व पद्मश्री पुरस्कारों की घोषणा की।

2010 इथियोपिया एयरलाइंस की उड़ान 409, लेबनान के बेरूत से टेकऑफ के तुरंत बाद भूमध्य सागर में दुर्घटनाग्रस्त हो गया, जिसमें सवार सभी 90 लोगों की मौत हो गई।

2011 मिस्र की क्रांति की पहली लहर शुरू हुई, जो अंततः लगभग 30 वर्षों के शासन के बाद होस्नी मुबारक को हटाने की ओर अग्रसर हुई।

2012 ईरान के राष्ट्रपति, महमूद अहमदीनेजाद ने बयान दिया कि ईरान अन्य देशों के साथ अपने परमाणु कार्यक्रम के बारे में चर्चा करने के लिए तैयार है।

2013 यूईएफए ने यूरो 2020 के लिए योजनाओं की घोषणा की, फुटबॉल चैम्पियनशिप 13 विभिन्न देशों में आयोजित की जाएगी।

2019 हिंदी की विख्यात लेखिका, कथाकार कृष्णा सोब्ती का निधन हुआ।

1576 Portuguese explorer Paulo Días de Novais founded São Paulo da Asampaço de Londa, now known as Luanda, on the west coast of Africa.

1579 Dutch Republic established.

1627 Great scientist Robert Boyle was born in the city of Munster, Ireland. Robert gave Boyle's principle. Boyle was number 10 among his 14 siblings. Apart from English, Robert had mastered French and Latin languages since childhood. Apart from this, he also learned Hebrew, Greek and Syriac languages. His early education was from Eton Kalil School. Three years later, he went on a trip to Europe. In 1641, at the age of 14, he met the great scientist Galileo, and this meeting only inspired him to become a scientist later. After this Boyle took admission in Oxford University. Robert is best known for Boyle's principle in physics. In Boyle's theory, how air changes due to decrease and increase in pressure has been explained. Robert Boyle died on 30 December 1691 at the age of 64.

1962 Pradeep Sawant, a very famous police officer of Bombay and who conducted about 300 encounters, was born in Thane.

1969 Urvashi i.e. Kavita Ranjini, a well-known actress of South Indian cinema, was born in Thiruvananthapuram, the present capital of Kerala. Peace talks between North Vietnam and the US began in Paris on 25 January 1969. On this day the famous Indian English writer, short story writer Ashwin Sanghi was born in Bombay.

1971 Himachal Pradesh was declared a full state. On this day in 1971, Idi Amin Dada seized power from President Milton Obote in a military coup after eight years of military action in Uganda.

1974 Emily Haines, noted Canadian-American singer and songwriter, was born in New Delhi. Real name is Emily Savitri Haines. On this day Rupam Islam, lead singer of the band Fossils, famous Indian singer, songwriter and musician, was born in Calcutta.

1975 Sheikh Mujibur Rahman became the President of Bangladesh.

1979: Sharib Hashmi, noted film actor, was born.

1980 After a gap of three years, Padma Vibhushan, Bharat Ratna, etc. civil honors started to be awarded again.

1980 Famous Christian missionary social worker Mother Teresa was awarded Bharat Ratna.

1983 Acharya Vinoba Bhave was posthumously awarded the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna.

1980 Cheteshwar Pujara, famous Indian cricketer, was born in Rajkot, Gujarat. On the same day, Ramsevak Shankar took oath as the President of Suriname.

1985 Lendl Mark Plater Simmons, Trinidad and West Indies cricketer, was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
