553 चीन के चेन राजवंश के सम्राट होउझू, (चेन शुबाओ) का जन्म हुआ।

1317 स्वीडन के राजा बिर्गर ने धोखेबाजी से अपने दो भाइयों वल्देमार, फिनलैंड के ड्यूक और एरिक, सोडरमैनलैंड के ड्यूक को पकड़वाकर कैद लिया। वल्देमार और एरिक को नाइकोपिंग कैसल की कालकोठरी में डाल दिया गया, उन्हें भोजन, पानी कुछ नहीं दिया गया। कई दिन बाद दोनों की भूख-प्यास से तड़प-तड़प कर मौत हुई।

1452 विख्यात जर्मन गणितज्ञ, खगोलशास्त्री, ज्योतिषी, पुजारी, खगोलीय उपकरणों के निर्माता और तुबिंगन विश्वविद्यालय में प्रोफेसर हुए जोहान्स स्टॉफलर का जन्म हुआ।

1508 पोप जूलियस द्वितीय, फ्रांस के लुई बारहवें, मैक्सिमिलियन प्रथम, रोमन सम्राट और आरागॉन के फर्डिनेंड द्वितीय ने वेनिस के खिलाफ गठबंधन के रूप में कंबराई लीग का गठन किया।

1520 मार्टिन लूथर ने विटनबर्ग के एल्स्टर गेट के बाहर पोप बुल एक्ससर्ज डोमिन की अपनी प्रति जलाई।

1541 थॉमस कल्पेपर और फ्रांसिस डेरेहम को इंग्लैंड की रानी और हेनरी अष्टम की पत्नी कैथरीन हॉवर्ड के यौन संबंध के आरोप में फाँसी दी गई।

1588 मिडलबर्ग, जीलैंड काउंटी, डच गणराज्य में इसहाक बीकमैन का जन्म हुआ। आगे चलकर बीकमैन प्रसिद्ध डच दार्शनिक, शोधकर्ता, चिंतक और वैज्ञानिक हुए।

1582 फ्रांस ने ग्रेगोरियन कैलेंडर का इस्तेमाल करना शुरु किया। आज पूरी दुनिया में इसी कैलेंडर को इस्तेमाल किया जाता है।

1679 मुगल शहंशाह औरंगजेब के दरबार के एक प्रभावशाली सामंत यशवंतसिंह का निधन हुआ।

1799 वजन की तौल के लिए मीट्रिक सिस्टम अपनाने वाला फ्रांस दुनिया का पहला देश बना।

1805 न्यूबरीपोर्ट, मैसाचुसेट्स, अमेरिका में विलियम लॉयड गैरीसन का जन्म हुआ। गैरीसन प्रसिद्ध और प्रमुख अमेरिकी दासता उन्मूलनवादी, पत्रकार, भेदभाव विरोधी और समाज सुधारक थे। गैरीसन को उनके व्यापक रूप से पढ़े जाने वाले गुलामी-विरोधी अखबार द लिबरेटर के लिए जाना जाता है। दासों, गरीबों, वंचितों, भेदभाव के शिकार लोगों की पीड़ा और उनके हक में अभियान चलाने के लिए गैरीसन ने 1831 में द लिबरेटर अखबार प्रकाशित करना शुरु किया। 1865 में तेरहवें संशोधन द्वारा संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका में गुलामी को समाप्त किए जाने तक यह अखबार बोस्टन से प्रकाशित होता रहा।

1816 डच साम्राज्यवादियों ने सुमात्रा पर दोबारा कब्जा किया।

1870 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय इतिहासकार यदुनाथ सरकार का जन्म हुआ।

1878 वर्तमान उत्तर प्रदेश के रामपुर में मोहम्मद अली जौहर का जन्म हुआ जो खिलाफत आंदोलन के प्रमुख नेता, पत्रकार, शिक्षाविद, अनुवादक और सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता हुए। इन्हीं के नाम पर सपा नेता आजम खां ने विश्वविद्यालय का निर्माण कराया। इसी दिन 1878 में विख्यात भारतीय विधिविद, लेखक, राजनीतिज्ञ और दार्शनिक चक्रवर्ती राजगोपालाचारी का जन्म हुआ। 1878 में इसी दिन प्रमुख स्वतंत्रता सेनानी, पत्रकार और शिक्षाविद मोहम्मद अली का जन्म हुआ।

1887 आस्ट्रिया, हंगरी, इटली और ब्रिटेन के बीच बाल्कन सैन्य समझौते पर हस्ताक्षर किये गये।

1888 प्रसिद्ध स्वतंत्रता सेनानी प्रफुल्लचंद चाकी का जन्म हुआ।

1896 सैनरेमो, लिगुरिया, इटली में अल्फ्रेड बर्नहार्ड नोबेल का निधन हुआ। नोबेल स्वीडिश रसायनज्ञ, इंजीनियर, आविष्कारक, व्यापारी और परोपकारी थे। उन्हें डायनामाइट का आविष्कार करने के साथ-साथ नोबेल पुरस्कार की स्थापना के लिए अपनी संपत्ति दान करने के लिए भी जाना जाता है। उन्होंने अपने जीवनकाल में 355 पेटेंट हासिल करते हुए विज्ञान में भी कई महत्वपूर्ण योगदान दिए। नोबेल का सबसे प्रसिद्ध आविष्कार डायनामाइट था, जो नाइट्रोग्लिसरीन का उपयोग करने वाला एक विस्फोटक था। इसे 1867 में पेटेंट कराया गया था। उनकी पुण्य तिथि पर नोबल पुरस्कार वितरित किए जाते हैं और यूरोप में नोबेल डे भी मनाया जाता है।

1896 पहला नोबेल पुरस्कार समारोह, अल्फ्रेड नोबेल की मौत की पांचवीं वर्षगांठ पर स्टॉकहोम में आयोजित किया गया। स्वीडिश रसायनज्ञ और उद्योगपति अल्फ्रेडनोबेल की मृत्यु की सालगिरह पर पहले नोबेल पुरस्कार प्रदान किए गए थे।

1902 तस्मानिया में महिलाओं को वोट देने का अधिकार प्रदान किया गया। इसी दिन 1902 में भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के अध्यक्ष एस. निजलिंगप्पा का जन्म हुआ।

1917 प्रसिद्ध अंग्रेजी-कनाडाई पत्रकार और राजनीतिज्ञ, कनाडा के 5वें प्रधानमंत्री मैकेंजी बोवेल का निधन हुआ।

1936 विख्यात इतालवी नाटककार, उपन्यासकार, कवि नोबेल पुरस्कार विजेता लुइगी पिरंडेलो का निधन हुआ।

1941 जाने माने ब्रिटिश गायक, संगीतज्ञ और गीतकार पीटर अर्डली सर्सटड्ट का जन्म दिल्ली में हुआ।

1947 सोवियत संघ और चेकोस्लोवाकिया के बीच व्यापार समझौते पर हस्ताक्षर हुए।

1950 मानव अधिकार दिवस घोषित किया गया। इसका मकसद दुनिया भर के लोगों का ध्यान मानवाधिकारों की ओर खींचना है, ताकि हर देश और समुदाय में सभी को एक नजर से देखा जाए। कानून के अनुसार सबको बराबर के अधिकार और सुरक्षा मिले।

1952 गाले, श्रीलंका में सुजाता का जन्म हुआ। वे जानी मानी, खूबसूरत, बोल्ड दक्षिण भारतीय फिल्म अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल हैं।

1957 आध्यात्मिक गुरु हंस महाराज के पुत्र प्रेम पाल सिंह रावत का जन्म हरिद्वार में हुआ। वे विवादास्पद आध्यात्मिक वक्ता, ध्यान के टीचर हैं।

1949 चीनी गृहयुद्ध में पीपुल्स लिबरेशन आर्मी ने मुख्य भूमि चीन में अंतिम कुओमितांग-आयोजित शहर चेंगदू की घेराबंदी शुरू कर दी, जिससे चीन गणराज्य के राष्ट्रपति चियांग काई-शेक और उनकी सरकार को ताइवान में पीछे हटने के लिए मजबूर होना पड़ा।

1953 ब्रिटिश प्रधानमंत्री विंस्टन चर्चिल को साहित्य का नोबेल पुरस्कार मिला।

1960 नोबेल पुरस्कार से सम्मानित प्रतिबंधित अफ्रीकी नेशनल कांग्रेस के नेता अल्बर्ट लूथली ने दक्षिण अफ्रीका में रंगभेद समाप्त करने की अपील की। इसी दिन 1960 में बाॅलीवुड की जानी-मानी, खूबसूरत, बोल्ड फिल्म अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल रति अग्निहोत्री का बरेली में जन्म हुआ। इन्होंने दक्षिण भारतीय फिल्मों में भी अभिनय किया।

1961 सोवियत संघ और अल्बानिया के बीच राजनयिक संबंध समाप्त हुए।

1963 अफ्रीकी देश जंजीबार ने ब्रिटेन से स्वतंत्रता हासिल की। 1963 मैसूर (कर्नाटक) के प्रसिद्ध राजनीतिज्ञ, राजनीयक और विद्वान केएम पणीक्कर का निधन हुआ।

1965 मलयालम, तमिल एवं तेलुगू के जाने माने गायक और अभिनेता जयराम सुब्रमण्यम का जन्म पेरुंबावूर में हुआ।

1978 जानी मानी, खूबसूरत, बोल्ड बाॅलीवुड चरित्र अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल अंजना सुखानी का जन्म जयपुर में हुआ। इसी दिन इजराइल के प्रधानमंत्री मेनकेम बेगिन और मिस्र के राष्ट्रपति अनवर सादात को संयुक्त रूप से नोबेल शांति पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया।

1982 जानी-मानी खूबसूरत, बोल्ड भारतीय माॅडल, फिल्म और टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री ओहाना शिवानंद यानी शिल्पा शिवानंद का जन्म दक्षिण अफ्रीका में हुआ।

1985 खूबसूरत, बोल्ड और जानी-मानी दक्षिण भारतीय फिल्म अभिनेत्री तथा माॅडल कमला जेठमलानी का बंबई में जन्म हुआ।

1988 चूनाभट्टी, बंबई में सुनील धवल कुलकर्णी का जन्म हुआ। वे जाने माने भारतीय क्रिकेट खिलाड़ी हैं।

1989 जाने माने मलयालम और तमिल फिल्म अभिनेता, गायक और संगीतज्ञ सूरज एस कुरूप का जन्म कोट्टायम में हुआ।

1991 कजाखस्तान ने सोवियत संघ से स्वतंत्रता की घोषणा की।

1992 गुजरात में देश की पहली होवरक्राफ्ट सेवा शुरू हुई।

1993 कोयला खनन कार्मिकों की आखिरी शिफ्ट इंग्लैंड के सुंदरलैंड में वेयरमाउथ कोलियरी से रवाना हुई। 156 साल पुराने खदान का बंद होना पुराने काउंटी डरहम कोयला क्षेत्र के अंत का प्रतीक बना। यहां मध्य युग से कोयला खनन हो रहा था।

1994 फिलिस्तीनी नेता यासिर अराफात और इजराइली नेता यित्जाक राबिन एवं शिमोन पेरेज संयुक्त रूप से नोबेल शांति पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया।

1995 7.2 फुट लंबे जाने-माने बास्केटबाल खिलाड़ी और पहलवान सतनाम सिंह भामरा का पंजाब के बरनाला जनपद के बिल्लो के गांव में जन्म हुआ। यह अमेरिकी बास्केटबाल खिलाड़ी टीम में चयनित होने वाले पहले भारतीय बास्केटबाल खिलाड़ी हैं और डलास मेव्रिक्स टीम के सदस्य हैं। 1995 में इसी दिन स्वतंत्रता सेनानी और प्रसिद्ध राजनेता चैधरी दिगंबर सिंह का निधन हुआ।

1996 जाने माने भारतीय कवि और ब्लॉगर मानस मादरेचा का जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन प्रसिद्ध अमेरिकी गायक-गीतकार, गिटारवादक और अभिनेता फारोन यंग का निधन हुआ।

1997 जाने माने भारतीय पेशेवर रेसिंग ड्राइवर अर्जुन मैनी का जन्म बंगलौर में हुआ।

1998 भारतीय मूल के विश्व प्रसिद्ध अर्थशास्त्री अमर्त्य सेन को स्टॉकहोम में अर्थशास्त्र के लिए 1998 का नोबेल पुरस्कार प्रदान किया गया। इसी दिन चीन के परमाणु कार्यक्रम के जनक वांगकान धांग का निधन हुआ।

1999 हेलेन क्लार्क ने न्यूजीलैंड की प्रधानमंत्री पद की शपथ ली। वह इस पद को संभालने वाली दूसरी महिला और सीधे चुनाव के बाद पहली महिला थीं।

2000 पाकिस्तान के पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री नवाज शरीफ को दस साल के लिए पाकिस्तान से निर्वासित कर दिया गया। शरीफ उस वक्त अपहरण और भ्रष्टाचार जैसे गंभीर मामलों में जेल में थे।

2001 चेंबूर, बंबई में दादा मुनि के नाम से मशहूर अशोक कुमार का निधन हुआ। वे विख्यात हिंदी फिल्म अभिनेता, चरित्र अभिनेता और बहुमुखी प्रतिभा से परिपूर्ण व्यक्तित्व थे। भारत सरकार ने उन्हें कला के क्षेत्र में उनके बेहतरीन योगदान के लिए पद्म भूषण से सम्मानित किया।

2002 अमेरिका की दूसरी सबसे बड़ी वायुसेवा कंपनी यूनाइटेड एयरलाइंस दिवालिया घोषित हुई।

2003 कोलंबो में राष्ट्रपति चंद्रिका कुमारतुंग और प्रधानमंत्री रानिल विक्रमसिंधे के बीच वार्ता विफल हुई।

2004 ढाका क्रिकेट टेस्ट में कपिल देव को पीछे छोड़ते हुए अनिल कुंबले टेस्ट क्रिकेट में सर्वाधिक विकेट लेने वाले पहले भारतीय बने। 2004 में अनिल कुंबले ने कपिल देव के टेस्ट में 434 विकेट के रिकॉर्ड को पीछे छोड़ा था। कुंबले ने ढाका में बांग्लादेश के खिलाफ हुए टेस्ट के पहले दिन दो विकेट लेकर ये कारनामा किया। उन्होंने अपने टेस्ट करियर में कुल 619 टेस्ट विकेट लिए। यह आज भी भारतीय रिकॉर्ड है। कुंबले से ज्यादा विकेट सिर्फ श्रीलंका के मुथैया मुरलीधरन (800) और ऑस्ट्रेलिया के शेन वॉर्न (708) ने लिए हैं।

2005 कजाकिस्तान में हुए राष्ट्रपति चुनाव में नूर सुल्तान नजर बायेब पुनः राष्ट्रपति निर्वाचित हुए।

2006 चिली के पूर्व कुख्यात तानाशाह जनरल आगस्तो पिनोशे का सैंटियागो में निधन हुआ।

2007 पाकिस्तानी राष्ट्रपति जनरल परवेज मुशर्रफ ने पाकिस्तान के सर्वोच्च न्यायालय में तीन और जजों को नियुक्त किया।

2009 मराठी के लेखक, कवि एवं आलोचक दिलीप चित्रे का निधन आज ही के दिन हुआ था।

2013 मादक पदार्थ मारिजुआना के विकास, बिक्री तथा उपयोग को वैध बनाने वाला उरूगवे पहला देश बना।

2014 रामल्ला के गांव तुरमुसय्या में इजरायल ने फिलिस्तीनी मंत्री जियाद अबू ऐन की हत्या कर दी।

2019 गेर्शोन किंग्सले प्रसिद्ध अमेरिकी संगीतकार और संगीतकार एवं एमिली मेसन प्रसिद्ध अमेरिकी चित्रकार का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन चेक गणराज्य में ओस्ट्रावा अस्पताल पर बम हमले में आत्मघाती अपराधी सहित आठ लोगों की मौत हो गई

2020 प्रसिद्ध अमेरिकी अभिनेता और पहलवान टॉमी टिनी लिस्टर जूनियर का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन कैरोल सटन लोकप्रिय अमेरिकी अभिनेत्री एवं बारबरा विंडसर प्रसिद्ध ब्रिटिश अंग्रेजी अभिनेत्री का निधन हुआ।

2021 प्रसिद्ध अमेरिकी संगीतकार (द मोनकीज), गीतकार, अभिनेता, निर्माता और उपन्यासकार माइकल नेस्मिथ का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन आए एक जबरदस्त बवंडर श्रंख्ला से संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका के मध्य, मध्य-पश्चिमी और दक्षिणी क्षेत्रों में व्यापक हानि हुई। बवंडर से 89 लोग मारे गए, जिनमें से अधिकांश मौतें केंटुकी में हुईं, जहां एक ही बवंडर ने 57 लोगों को मार डाला, और सैकड़ों अन्य घायल हो गये।

1805 William Lloyd Garrison is born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, USA. Garrison was a renowned and prominent American abolitionist, journalist, anti-discriminationist, and social reformer. Garrison is best known for his widely read anti-slavery newspaper The Liberator. Garrison began publishing The Liberator newspaper in 1831 to campaign for the suffering and rights of slaves, the poor, the underprivileged, and those who were discriminated against. The newspaper continued to be published from Boston until the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery in the United States in 1865.

On this day in 1878, prominent freedom fighter, journalist and educationist Mohammad Ali was born.

1887 Balkan Military Pact signed between Austria, Hungary, Italy and Britain.

1888 Famous freedom fighter Prafulla Chand Chaki was born.

1896 Alfred Bernhard Nobel dies in Sanremo, Liguria, Italy. Nobel was a Swedish chemist, engineer, inventor, businessman and philanthropist. He is also known for inventing dynamite as well as donating his wealth to establish the Nobel Prize. He also made many important contributions to science, obtaining 355 patents during his lifetime. Nobel's most famous invention was dynamite, an explosive using nitroglycerin. It was patented in 1867. Nobel Prizes are distributed on his death anniversary and Nobel Day is also celebrated in Europe.
