 456 जर्मनिक रोमन सैन्य जनरल रिकिमर ने पियासेंजा में एविटस को हराया और पश्चिमी रोमन साम्राज्य का स्वामी बन गया। 472 तक शासन के बाद रिकिमर की मृत्यु हुई और इसके बाद पूरे इटली में अशांति फैल गई और इतालवी प्रायद्वीप पर जर्मन साम्राज्य की स्थापना हुई।

690 महारानी वू जेटियन ने तांग राजवंश का राज-काज संभाला और खुद को चीनी साम्राज्य का शासक घोषित किया।

1590 इटली के मशहूर संगीतकार कार्लो गेसुआल्डो ने अपनी पत्नी को एंड्रिया के ड्यूक फब्रीजियो कारफा के साथ विवाहेतर संबंधों रखने पर पकड़ा और मौके पर ही मार डाला।

1788 मराठा शासक ने शाह आलम को दिल्ली की राजगद्दी पर आसीन करवाया।

1710 कैरेबियन देश जमैका के पोर्ट रॉयल पर ब्रिटिश सैनिकों ने कब्जा किया।

1757 आस्ट्रिया की सेना ने जर्मनी की राजधानी बर्लिन पर कब्जा किया।

1793 विश्व प्रसिद्ध फ्रांस की पूंजीवादी क्रांति के बाद रानी मारी अंतुआनेत को त्वरित सुनवाई के बाद मौत की सजा दी गई।

1817 मकबरा केवी 17 मिस्र की राजाओं की घाटी में स्थित है और इसे बेल्जोनी का मकबरा, एपिस का मकबरा और नेचोइस के पुत्र सैमिस का मकबरा नामों से भी जाना जाता है, यह उन्नीसवीं सदी के फिरौन राजवंश सेती प्रथम की कब्र है। यह घाटी में सबसे अधिक सजाई गई, सबसे बड़ी और गहरी कब्रों में से एक है। इसे 16 अक्टूबर, 1817 को इतालवी पुरातत्वविद् और खोजकर्ता जियोवानी बतिस्ता बेल्जोनी ने खोजा था।

1834 लंदन में वेस्टमिंस्टर पैलेस की प्राचीन संरचना का अधिकांश भाग आग में जलकर नष्ट हो गया।

1841 चर्च ऑफ स्कॉटलैंड ने किंग्सटन, ओंटारियो, कनाडा में क्वींस कॉलेज की स्थापना की।

1843 विलियम रोवन हैमिल्टन ने चतुर्भुज जटिल संख्याओं की त्रि-आयामी प्रणाली का आविष्कार किया। सर विलियम रोवन हैमिल्टन आयरिश गणितज्ञ, खगोलशास्त्री और भौतिक विज्ञानी थे। वह ट्रिनिटी कॉलेज डबलिन में खगोल विज्ञान के एंड्रयूज प्रोफेसर और डनसिंक वेधशाला में रहने वाले आयरलैंड के रॉयल खगोलशास्त्री थे। हैमिल्टन डनसिंक के तीसरे निदेशक बने।

1848 पहला अमेरिकी होम्योपैथिक मेडिकल कॉलेज पेनसिल्वेनिया में खोला गया।

1854 महान अंग्रेजी नाटककार विलियम शैक्सपियर के बाद ऑस्कर वाइल्ड के नाटक काफी चर्चित हुए। वाइल्ड का जन्म 16 अक्टूबर को 1854 में आयरलैंड की धरती पर हुआ। वे कवि और चिंतक भी थे।

1859 शोषण, उत्पीड़न, अपमान से त्रस्त गुलामों ने हथियारबंद प्रतिरोध शुरू करते हुए जॉन ब्राउन के नेतृत्व में हार्पर्स फेरी आर्मरी, वेस्टविर्जिनिया में छापामार कार्रवाई की।

1861 अमेरिका में संघीय डाक टिकट बिकने शुरू हुए।

1868 डेनमार्क ने निकोबार द्वीप समूह के अधिकार ब्रिटेन को बेचे और इसके साथ ही भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप से डेनमार्क का संबंध खत्म हुआ।

1869 गिर्टन कॉलेज, कैंब्रिज और इंग्लैंड के पहले आवासीय महाविद्यालय के 31 घटक कॉलेजों में से एक की स्थापना की गई।

1878 वाल्मीकि रामायण का मलयालम में अनुवाद करने वाले विख्यात मलयालम कवि वालाथोल नारायण मेनन का जन्म तिरूर में हुआ।

1905 ब्रिटिश भारत के वायसराय लार्ड कर्जन के आदेश पर बंगाल का विभाजन किया गया।

1921 बीसवीं सदी के प्रमुख हिंदी इतिहासकार, लेखक, प्रकाशक, कथाकार और चिंतक सीता राम गोयल का जन्म पंजाब में हुआ।

1923 मिकी माउस और डोनाल्ड डक दुनिया भर में जाने-माने कार्टून चरित्र हैं। 16 अक्टूबर 1923 को डिज्नी की स्थापना हुई। डिज्नी को वॉल्ट और रॉय नामक दो भाइयों ने बनाया था। कैलिफोर्निया में शुरू की गई इस कंपनी का शुरुआती नाम था, डिज्नी ब्रदर्स कार्टून स्टूडियो। जब कंपनी शुरू हुई तो वॉल्ट डिज्नी ने कई संकटों का सामना किया। खाने के लिए भी पैसे नहीं होते थे। कार्टून बिक नहीं पाते थे। मई 1928 में डिज्नी ने अपनी पहली शॉर्ट फिल्म प्लेन क्रेजी की टेस्ट स्क्रीनिंग की। ये फिल्म चार्ल्स लिंडबर्ग की अटलांटिक के ऊपर से पहली उड़ान से प्रेरित थी। इस फिल्म में पहली बार मिकी हाउस लोगों के सामने आया। ये फिल्म दो हफ्ते तक थिएटर में रही और डिज्नी को इससे 1 हजार डॉलर की कमाई हुई। तब से इस कंपनी ने बहुत विस्तार किया। 2020 में वॉल्ट डिज्नी का वैश्विक राजस्व 38.7 बिलियन डॉलर रहा। फोर्ब्स के मुताबिक इसकी ब्रांड वैल्यू 61.3 बिलियन डॉलर है। डिज्नी मीडिया बिजनेस नेटवर्क के पास डिज्नी चैनल, ईएसपीएन, हिस्ट्री, लाइफटाइम जैसे कई वैश्विक स्तर पर प्रसारित होने वाले टीवी चैनल हैं।

1934 चीन के वामपंथियों ने दस हजार किलोमीटर की यात्रा शुरू की, जिससे कम्युनिस्ट क्रांति का आधार दक्षिण-पूर्व चीन से बदलकर उत्तर पश्चिम चीन हो गया और माओ त्से तुंग चीनी कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी के सर्वमान्य नेता के रूप में उभरे।

1942 बंगाल में आए प्रलयंकारी तूफान में 40 हजार लोगों की मौत।

1945 संयुक्त राष्ट्र के फूड एंड एग्रीकल्चर ऑर्गेनाइजेशन (एफएओ) की स्थापना 16 अक्टूबर 1945 को हुई थी। 1979 में रोम में एफएओ के एक आयोजन में तय हुआ कि 1981 से हर साल 16 अक्टूबर को वर्ल्ड फूड डे मनाया जाएगा। हर साल एक अलग थीम तय की जाती है। यह दिन खाद्य पदार्थों की गुणवत्ता, उपलब्धता और आपूर्ति से जुड़ी समस्याओं के बारे में लोगों को जागरूक करने के लिए है। सन 2021 में यूएन का फोकस था- फूड हीरोज, किसान और फूड सिस्टम से जुड़े सभी कर्मचारियों के योगदान का महत्व हर एक को समझाने पर रहा। भारत में 2016 की नोटबंदी और, जीएसटी से अर्थव्यवस्था काफी तबाह हुई। बीच में मोदी सरकार की सांप्रदायिक, विभाजनकारी नीतियों से काम-काज प्रभावित हुए और मंदी तथा बेरोजगारी बढ़ी। कोरोना कुप्रबंधन और जबरदस्त लाॅकडाउन से लाखों उद्योग - धंधे बंद हो गये। करोड़ों लोगों की नौकरियां चली गईं, नये रोजगार के अवसर बंद हो गये। जीडीपी माइनस में चली गई। ऐसे दौर में वंचित तबका और गरीब सबसे ज्यादा प्रभावित हुए हैं और ऐसे में उन्हें आवश्यक मदद देना बहुत जरूरी है। आज भारत में भुखमरी की हालत नेपाल, बांग्लादेश और पाकिस्तान से भी बदतर है। भयंकर बेरोजगारी, महंगाई और मंदी है। 2023 में भारत वैश्विक भूख सूचकांक में 111वें नंबर पर है। यह मोदी सरकार की 9 साल की उपलब्धि है कि उसने व्यापक जनता को भुखमरी, असहाय, भयंकर बेरोजगारी, तंगहाली की हालत में पहुंचा दिया है। ऐसे में भोजन का सवाल और बड़ा हो जाता है। यह समय जनविरोधी नीतियों को जानने, समझने और सुधार के बारे सोचने और कुछ करने का भी है। एक खेती ही है जो अभी भी ग्रामीण रोजगार का बेहतर जरिया है और तमाम शहरियों को भी यह रोजगार तथा खाने की चीजें उपलब्ध कराता है।

1946 उड़ीसा के वर्तमान मुख्यमंत्री नवीन पटनायक का जन्म हुआ।

1948 हिंदी सिनेमा की लोकप्रिय अभिनेत्री ड्रीम गर्ल कही गई भाजपा नेत्री हेमा मालिनी चक्रवर्ती का जन्म हुआ।

1951 पाकिस्तान के पहले प्रधानमंत्री लियाकत अली की एक जनसभा के दौरान हत्या कर दी गई। इसी दिन जाने माने भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस नेता ललित माकन का जन्म हुआ।

1959 राष्ट्रीय महिला शिक्षा परिषद का उद्घाटन।

1960 भारत सरकार में अहम पदों पर रहे और विश्व बैंक के एक्जीक्यूटिव डायरेक्टर हुए भारतीय प्रशासनिक सेवा के 1983 बैच के अफसर सुभाष चंद्र गर्ग का जन्म जयपुर, राजस्थान में हुआ।

1964 परमाणु स्पर्धा में शामिल चीन ने अपने पहले परमाणु बम का सफल परीक्षण किया। इसी दिन लियोनिद ब्रेझनेव सोवियत कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी के नेता बने, जबकि एलेक्सी कोश्यिन सरकार के प्रमुख बने। इसी दिन ओलंपिक ब्लैक पावर सैल्यूट में भाग लेने के लिए टॉमी स्मिथ और जॉन कार्लोस को अमेरिकी ओलंपिक टीम से बाहर कर दिया गया। इसी दिन किंग्स्टन, जमैका रॉडनी दंगों से हिल गया, जो वाल्टर रॉडनी को देश से बाहर निकालने से प्रेरित था। 1968 में इसी दिन यासुनारी कावाबाता साहित्य में नोबेल पुरस्कार से सम्मानित होने वाले पहले जापानी व्यक्ति बने। इसी दिन 1968 में भारत से अमेरिका जा बसे डाॅ. हर गोबिन्द खुराना को मेडिसिन और फिजियोलॉजी के लिए नोबेल पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया।

1973 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय सिरो-मालाबार कैथोलिक पादरी एवं दलितों के आध्यात्मिक और लौकिक कल्याण को समर्पित थेवरपरम्बिल कुंजाचन (ऑगस्टीन थेवरपराम्बिल) रामापुरम, केरल में निधन हुआ।

1975 जाने माने क्रिकेट खिलाड़ी और तमिल फिल्म अभिनेता सदागोपन रमेश का जन्म चेन्नई में हुआ। इसी दिन जाने माने भारतीय फिल्म एवं टेलीविजन अभिनेता राजीव खंडेलवाल का जन्म जयपुर में हुआ। इसी दिन 1975 में इंडोनेशियाई सैनिकों ने पुर्तगाली तिमोर में ऑस्ट्रेलियाई पत्रकारों के एक समूह बालिबो फाइव को मार डाला। इसी दिन बांग्लादेश की तीन वर्षीय रहीमा बानू प्राकृतिक रूप से होने वाली चेचक का आखिरी ज्ञात मामला सामने आया। इसी दिन ऑस्ट्रेलियाई गठबंधन ने संवैधानिक संकट को जन्म दिया जब उन्होंने सरकार के वार्षिक बजट के लिए धन को स्थगित करने के लिए मतदान किया।

1978 कार्डिनल करोल वोज्तिला को पोप जॉन पॉल द्वितीय के रूप में पोप पद के लिए चुना गया, वह 1523 के बाद पहले गैर-इतालवी पोंटिफ बने। इसी दिन 1978 में भारतीय क्रिकेटर कपिल देव ने पाकिस्तान में फैसलाबाद टेस्ट से अपने क्रिकेट जीवन की शुरुआत की।

1979 बिग बाॅस के पहले सीजन के विजेता और मलयालम टेलीविजन अभिनेता, टेलीविजन शो प्रस्तोता सुबोमोन अब्दुसमद का जन्म कायमकुलम, केरल में हुआ।

1980 जाने माने भारतीय फिल्म एवं टेलीविजन अभिनेता भानु उदय का जन्म जम्मू में हुआ।

1982 मलयालम सिनेमा के प्रमुख अभिनेता, निर्माता एवं निर्देशक तथा गायक पृथ्वीराज सुकुमारन का जन्म तिरुअनंतपुरम में हुआ।

1984 दक्षिण अफ्रीका के सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता डेसमंड टुटु को शांति के लिये नोबेल पुरस्कार दिया गया।

1990 जाने माने तमिल फिल्म संगीतकार अनिरुद्ध रविचंदर का जन्म चेन्नई में हुआ।

1992 जानी मानी भारतीय महिला क्रिकेट खिलाड़ी वेदा कृष्णमूर्ति का जन्म चिकमंगलूर में हुआ।

1993 जाने माने पहलवान पवन कुमार का जन्म दिल्ली में हुआ।

1995 भारतीय सेना में सूबेदार एवं जाने माने मुक्केबाज अमित पंघाल का जन्म हुआ।

1996 ब्रिटिश सरकार ने डनब्लेन नरसंहार के बाद लगभग हर तरह की हैंडगन पर रोक लगा दी। यहां एक स्कूल में 13 मार्च को एक व्यक्ति ने अंधाधुंध गोलीबारी कर 16 बच्चों और एक शिक्षक की जान ले ली थी।

1999 अमेरिका ने सैन्य शासन के विरोध में पाकिस्तान पर प्रतिबंध लगाया।

2002 14वें एशियाई खेलों में एक स्वर्ण और एक कांस्य पदक विजेता डोपिंट टेस्ट में असफल रहने के बाद भारत की सुनीता रानी का पदक छीना गया। 2002 में इसी दिन अलेक्जेंड्रिया की प्राचीन लाइब्रेरी की स्मृति में मिस्र में बिब्लियोथेका अलेक्जेंड्रिना मिस्र के अलेक्जेंड्रिया में भूमध्य सागर के तट पर प्रमुख पुस्तकालय और सांस्कृतिक केंद्र खोला गया।

2004 अमेरिका ने इराकी अबू मुसार जल जरकावी के संगठन को आतंकवादी संगठन घोषित किया। इसी दिन प्रसिद्ध अमेरिकी पत्रकार और राजनीतिज्ञ, 11वें व्हाइट हाउस प्रेस सचिव पियरे सेलिंगर का निधन हुआ।

2005 जी-20 देश विश्व बैंक और आईएमएफ में सुधार के लिए सहमत हुए।

2008 टाल्लिन्न, एस्टोनिया में डागमार नॉर्मेट नामक प्रसिद्ध एस्टोनियाई साहित्यिक लेखक और अनुवादक का निधन हुआ।

2011 भारतीय मूल के धावक 100 वर्षीय फौजा सिंह ने सबसे अधिक उम्र में टोरंटो वाटर फ्रंट मैराथन पूरी की।

2012 सौरमंडल के बाहर एक नए ग्रह अल्फा सेंचुरी बीबी का पता चला। इसी दिन बोडोग टोरोक, हंगेरियन हैंडबॉल खिलाड़ी और कोच एवं एडी यॉस्ट, अमेरिकी बेसबॉल खिलाड़ी और कोच का निधन हुआ।

2013 गोविंद पुरूषोत्तम देशपांडे, भारतीय नाटककार और अकादमिक एवं जॉर्ज ऑवरमौजियाडिस, यूनानी पुरातत्वविद् और अकादमिक का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन 2013 में दक्षिण पूर्वी एशियाई देश लाओस के पाक्से अंतरराष्ट्रीय हवाई अड्डे पर उतरने से कुछ देर पहले लाओ एयरलाइंस के विमान के दुर्घटनाग्रस्त होने से 49 लोगों की मौत हुई।

2014 जॉन स्पेंसर-चर्चिल, मार्लबोरो के 11वें ड्यूक, अंग्रेजी व्यवसायी का निधन हुआ।

2016 प्रसिद्ध कनाडाई प्रोफेसर और कंप्यूटर वैज्ञानिक केल्विन कार्ल केली गोटलिब का निधन हुआ।

2017 डाफ्ने कारुआना गैलिजिया, माल्टीज पत्रकार और ब्लॉगर, रॉय डॉट्रिस, ब्रिटिश अभिनेता, जॉन डंसवर्थ, कनाडाई अभिनेता एवं शॉन ह्यूजेस, ब्रिटिश मूल के आयरिश स्टैंड-अप कॉमेडियन का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन 2017 में इंग्लैंड और आयरलैंड में तूफान ओफेलिया ने व्यापक कहर बरपाया जिससे बड़ी क्षति हुई और बिजली व्यवस्था ध्वस्त हो गई।

1817 Tomb KV17, located in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt and also known as the Tomb of Belzoni, the Tomb of Apis, and the Tomb of Samis, son of Nechois, is the tomb of the nineteenth-century pharaoh of the dynasty Seti I. It is one of the most decorated, largest and deepest tombs in the valley. It was discovered on October 16, 1817 by Italian archaeologist and explorer Giovanni Battista Belzoni.
