99 ईसा पूर्व 15 अक्टूबर को पोंपी इटली में टाइटस ल्यूक्रेटियस कारस का जन्म हुआ, ऐसा माना जाता है। ल्यूक्रेटियस रोमन कवि और दार्शनिक थे। ल्यूक्रेटियस का एकमात्र ज्ञात कार्य दार्शनिक कविता डी रेरम नेचुरा है, जो एपिकुरिज्म के सिद्धांतों और दर्शन के बारे में एक उपदेशात्मक अभिव्यक्ति है। इसका अंग्रेजी में अनुवाद ऑन द नेचर ऑफ थिंग्स और ऑन द नेचर ऑफ द यूनिवर्स के रूप में किया गया है।

70 ईसा पूर्व, सिसलपाइन गॉल, इटली में पब्लियस वर्जिलियस मारो अंग्रेजी में वर्जिल का जन्म हुआ। वर्जिलियस ऑगस्टान काल के प्राचीन रोमन कवि थे। उन्होंने लैटिन साहित्य में तीन सबसे प्रसिद्ध कविताओं की रचना की, इकोलॉग्स, जॉर्जिक्स और महाकाव्य एनीड।

412 थियोफिलस का प्राचीन यूनान के अलेक्जेंड्रिया में निधन हुआ। थियोफिलस अलेक्जेंड्रिया के 23वें पोप और सेंट मार्क की सीट के कुलपति थे। वह अलेक्जेंड्रिया में नए प्रमुख ईसाइयों और बुतपरस्त प्रतिष्ठान के बीच संघर्ष के समय पोप बने, जिनमें से प्रत्येक को अलेक्जेंड्रिया आबादी के एक वर्ग का समर्थन प्राप्त था।

1240 दिल्ली सल्तनत की प्रमुख रहीं रजिया सुलतान का निधन हुआ। रजिया को भारत की पहली सफल महिला शासक होने का गौरव प्राप्त है। रजिय्यत-उद-दुनिया वा उद-दीन यानी रजिया सुल्तान के नाम से जाना जाता है, भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप उपमहाद्वीप की पहली महिला मुस्लिम शासक और दिल्ली की एकमात्र महिला मुस्लिम शासक थीं। 1205 में बदायूं में जन्मी रजिया का इंतकाल कैथल, हरियाणा में हुआ।

1582 स्पेन, पुर्तगाल, पोलिश-लिथुआनियाई राष्ट्रमंडल, और अधिकांश इटालियन राज्यों ने जूलियन कैलेंडर त्याग कर ग्रेगोरियन कैलेंडर अपनाया।

1878 विख्यात वैज्ञानिक और आविष्कारक थामस अल्बा एडिसन ने इलेक्ट्रिक लाइट कंपनी की स्थापना की। यह विद्युत ऊर्जा और बिजली उपकरण उपलब्ध कराने वाली पहली कंपनी बनी।

1866 कनाडा स्थित फ्रेंच बहुल क्षेत्र क्यूबेक में जबरदस्त भयानक आग लगी। इसमें अनेक लोग मारे गये और करीब 2500 मकान जलकर खाक हुए।

1686 मुगल शासक औरंगजेब ने बीजापुर राज्य के साथ शांति संधि पर हस्ताक्षर किए। औरंगजेब ने हजारों राज्यों, रजवाड़ों में बसे भारतीय भू-भाग के एकीकरण में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई। 

1917 प्रथम विश्व युद्ध के दौरान नीदरलैंड की प्रसिद्ध नृत्यांगना माता हारी को जर्मनी के लिए जासूसी करने के आरोप में फ्रांसीसी सैनिकों ने गोली मारी। माता हारी का वास्तविक नाम मार्गरेटा गीरट्रुइडा मैकलियोड था। वह विख्यात कामोत्तेजक नर्तकी और वेश्या थी जिसे प्रथम विश्व युद्ध के दौरान जर्मनी के लिए जासूस करने के आरोप में फ्रांस में फायरिंग दस्ते द्वारा मार डाला गया।

1924 अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति काल्विन कूलीड्ज ने स्टेच्यु ऑफ लिबर्टी को राष्ट्रीय स्मारक घोषित किया।

1931 भारत के विख्यात वैज्ञानिक हुए और राष्ट्रपति बने एपीजे अब्दुल कलाम (अवुल पाकिर जैनुलाब्दीन अब्दुल कलाम) का जन्म तमिलनाडु के रामेश्वरम में हुआ। भारत ने कलाम के योगदान को सराहने और छात्रों में शिक्षण को प्रोत्साहित करने के लिए 2010 में उनके जन्म दिन 15 अक्टूबर को विश्व छात्र दिवस मनाए जाने की घोषणा की। हालांकि भ्रांति यह है कि इसे संयुक्त राष्ट्र ने डिजाइन और प्रोत्साहित करते हुए मान्यता दी। किंतु वास्तव में कलाम के जन्म दिन पर विश्व छात्र दिवस मनाने का फैसला संयुक्त राष्ट्र ने नहीं दिया। 2008 से 15 अक्टूबर को संयुक्त राष्ट्र, उसके अनुसंगी संगठन, दुनिया भर की सरकारें और स्वयं सेवी, सामाजिक संगठन तथा उद्योग, कारोबार के लोगों साथ लेकर ग्रामीण महिलाओं के अर्थव्यवस्था, सामाजिक विकास आदि के योगदान को लेकर ग्रामीण महिलाओं का पहला अंतर्राष्ट्रीय दिवस मनाता है।

1934 माओ त्से तुंग के नेतृत्व में चीन के वामपंथी समाजवादियों ने ज्यांग्सी से दस हजार किलोमीटर की यात्रा शुरू की जिसे लांग मार्च कहा जाता है।

1932 किसी भारतीय को पहली बार पायलट यानी वायुयान उड़ाने का लाइसेंस मिला था, 10 फरवरी 1929 को जहांगीर रतनजी दादाभाई टाटा, यानी जेआरडी टाटा को। इसके 3 साल बाद जेआरडी टाटा ने अपनी एयरलाइंस की शुरुआत की, जिसे नाम दिया गया टाटा एयरलाइंस। ये भारत की पहली कॉमर्शियल एयरलाइन थी। 15 अक्टूबर 1932 को टाटा एयरलाइन ने अपनी पहली उड़ान भरी। पाकिस्तान के कराची से अहमदाबाद होते हुए मुंबई तक की इस फ्लाइट को जेआरडी टाटा ने खुद उड़ाया था। इस सिंगल इंजन विमान का नाम डी हैविलैंड पस मोथ था। भारत की इस पहली एयरलाइन की पहली हवाई यात्रा में सवारियां नहीं बल्कि 25 किलो चिट्ठियां भेजी गई थीं। बाद में पहले ही साल टाटा एयरलाइन में 155 पैसेंजर ने सफर किया और विमानों ने ढाई लाख किलोमीटर से भी ज्यादा दूरी तक हवाई यात्रा की। टाटा एयरलाइंस ने बॉम्बे से त्रिवेंद्रम तक की उड़ान भी शुरू की, जो उस समय एयरलाइन की सबसे लंबी दूरी की फ्लाइट थी। कई वर्ष तक टाटा एयरलाइन देश में घरेलू हवाई उड़ाने संचालित करती रही। दूसरे विश्वयुद्ध के कारण कॉमर्शियल उड़ानों पर रोक लगा दी गई। 1946 में टाटा एयरलाइंस को एक पब्लिक लिमिटेड कंपनी बनाकर इसका नाम एअर इंडिया कर दिया गया। 8 जून 1948 को एअर इंडिया ने अपनी पहली अंतरराष्ट्रीय उड़ान भरी। मुंबई के सांताक्रूज एयरपोर्ट से उड़ा ये विमान 10 जून को लंदन पहुंचा। इस फ्लाइट को मालाबार प्रिंसेज नाम दिया गया था, जिसमें जेआरडी टाटा और जामनगर के नवाब अमीर अली खान को मिलाकर कुल 35 लोग सवार थे। 1953 में जवाहर लाल नेहरू की सरकार ने देश में काम कर रही 8 एयरलाइन कंपनियों का राष्ट्रीयकरण कर दिया। सभी कंपनियों को मिलाकर इंडियन एयरलाइंस और एअर इंडिया बनाई गई। एअर इंडिया को अंतरराष्ट्रीय और इंडियन एयरलाइंस को घरेलू उड़ानों की जिम्मेदारी दी गई। अक्टूबर 2021 में सरकार ने 18 हजार करोड़ में एअर इंडिया को दोबारा टाटा ग्रुप को बेच दिया। जेआरडी टाटा की शुरू की गई टाटा एयरलाइन दोबारा टाटा ग्रुप के हाथों में आ गई।

1946 बंगाली, असमिया, हिंदी, अंग्रेजी सहित विविध भाषाओं की फिल्मों के जाने माने अभिनेता विक्टर बनर्जी का जन्म कलकत्ता में हुआ।

1949 लोकप्रिय टेलीविजन चैनल एनडीटीवी इंडिया के मुखिया, विख्यात पत्रकार, लेखक, अर्थशास्त्री, चार्टेड एकाउंटेंट और बहुप्रतिभावान व्यक्ति प्रणय राय का जन्म कलकत्ता में हुआ। एनडीटीवी की स्थापना उन्होंने अपनी पत्नी राधिका राय के साथ की। यह भारत का पहला स्वतंत्र टेलीविजन प्रसारण संस्थान था। यह टीवी कंपनी अब प्रधानमंत्री के करीबी मित्र कारोबारी गौतम अदाणी ने खरीद लिया है। इसी दिन स्वतंत्रता प्राप्ति के बाद त्रिपुरा राज्य को भारत में शामिल किया गया।

1951 अमेरिकी टेलीविजन के हास्य धारावाहिक आई लव लूसी का प्रसारण शुरू हुआ। इसमें लूसी बॉल और उनके पति डेसी एरनाज ने प्रमुख भूमिकाएं निभाईं। यह धारावाहिक दुनिया भर में खूब देखा और सराहा गया।

1952 भारतीय जनता पार्टी के नेता और छत्तीसगढ़ के मुख्यमंत्री रहे रमन सिंह का जन्म कवर्धा में हुआ।

1957 प्रख्यात भारतीय फिल्म निर्देशक मीरा नायर का जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन भाजपा नेता और भाजपा राष्ट्रीय उपाध्यक्ष मुख्तार अब्बास नकवी का जन्म इलाहाबाद में हुआ।

1958 अफ्रीकी देश ट्यूनीशिया ने मिस्र के साथ राजनयिक संबंध समाप्त किए।

1966 बंबई के कुख्यात गैंगस्टर, अंडरवर्ल्ड अपराधी माया डोलस का जन्म बंबई में हुआ। यह अपने साथियों के साथ 1991 की 16 नवंबर को बंबई के लोखंडवाला काॅम्पलैक्स में पुलिस मुठभेड़ में मारा गया।

1969 सोमालिया के राष्ट्रपति कैब्दीराशिद केली शेरमार्के की हत्या कर दी गई।

1978 सोवियत संघ ने पूर्वी कजाखस्तान क्षेत्र में परमाणु परीक्षण किया।

1979 निल बटे सन्नाटा जैसे टेलीविजन नाटकों की निर्देशिका, फिल्मकार और लेखिका अश्विनी अय्यर तिवारी का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1964 सोवियत संघ के तेज-तर्रार नेता निकिता ख्रुश्चेव ने अचानक पद छोड़ने और राजनीति से संन्यास लेने की घोषणा की।

1986 तेलुगू फिल्मों के लोकप्रिय अभिनेता और माॅडल पंजा साई धर्म तेज का जन्म हैदराबाद में हुआ।

1987 बुर्किना फासो में सैनिक विद्रोह में शासन प्रमुख थामस संकारा का तख्ता पलट करने के बाद उनकी और उनके कुछ समर्थकों की हत्या कर दी गई।

1988 भारत की उज्जवला पाटिल एक नौका में दुनिया की यात्रा करने वाली पहली एशियाई महिला बनीं। इसी दिन 1988 में जानी मानी बोल्ड, खूबसूरत टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री तथा माॅडल रूप दुर्गापाल का जन्म अल्मोड़ा, उत्तराखंड में हुआ।

1990 जियोन जी-यूं (पेशेवर नाम जियून एवं जेनयेर) का जन्म हुआ। जियून बोल्ड, खूबसूरत दक्षिण कोरियाई गायिका, रैपर, गीतकार और अभिनेत्री हैं, जो दक्षिण कोरियाई लड़की समूह 4 मिनट की सदस्य रहीं। उन्होंने 2 नवंबर, 2016 को स्टेज नाम जेनयेर के तहत अपने पहले डिजिटल सिंगल, आई डू की रिलीज के साथ एक एकल कलाकार के रूप में शुरुआत की। इसी दिन सोवियत संघ के राष्ट्रपति मिखाइल सर्गेइविच गोर्बाचेव को नोबेल शांति पुरस्कार दिया गया।

1993 दक्षिण अफ्रीकी जन नेता नेल्सन मंडेला और राष्ट्रपति रह चुके एफडब्ल्यूडी क्लार्क को रंगभेद को शांतिपूर्ण ढंग से खत्म करने और नये लोकतांत्रिक दक्षिण अफ्रीका की नींव रखने पर नोबेल शांति पुरस्कार के लिए चुना गया।

1997 भारत की विश्व प्रसिद्ध अंग्रेजी लेखिका और मानवाधिकार कार्यकर्ता अरुंधति राय को उनके उपन्यास द गॉड आफ स्माल थिंग्स के लिए ब्रिटेन के सबसे प्रतिष्ठित बुकर पुरस्कार के लिए चुना गया।

1999 चीन ने 12 हजार किलोमीटर तक मार करने वाले डी.एफ.-41 आईसीबीएम प्रक्षेपास्त्र का सफल परीक्षण किया। इसी दिन जनरल जोसेफ रॉलस्टन को नाटो का सर्वोच्च वाइस कमांडर नियुक्त किया गया।

2000 प्रसिद्ध पोलिश-अमेरिकी बायोकेमिस्ट और अकादमिक, नोबेल पुरस्कार विजेता कोनराड एमिल बलोच का निधन हुआ।

2003 अंतरिक्ष में मानवयुक्त यान भेजने वाला चीन तीसरा देश बना।

2008 रिजर्व बैंक ने कैश रिजर्व रेशियो सीआरआर में एक फीसदी की कटौती की घोषणा की।

2008 भारतीय अंग्रेजी लेखक अरविन्द अदिगा को उनकी पुस्तक द हाइट टाइगर के लिए 2008 का बुकर पुरस्कार प्रदान किया गया।

2013 फिलीपीन्स में 7.2 की तीव्रता वाले भूकंप से 215 से अधिक लोगों की मौत हुई।

2016 199 देशों ने हाइड्रोफ्लोरोकार्बन को चरणबद्ध तरीके से बंद करने के लिए मॉन्ट्रियल प्रोटोकॉल में संशोधन का समर्थन किया।

2018 माइक्रोसॉफ्ट के सह संस्थापक पॉल एलन का निधन हुआ। 2018 में इसी दिन बैरन, विस्कॉन्सिन की 13 वर्षीय अमेरिकी लड़की जयमे क्लॉस को उसके माता-पिता की हत्या के बाद अपहरण कर लिया गया।

2020 भारत की प्रथम ऑस्कर विजेता कॉस्ट्यूम डिजाइनर भानु अथैया का निधन हुआ। इन्होंने प्रमुख फिल्म निर्माण कंपनियों की 100 से अधिक फिल्मों कॉस्ट्यूम यानी पोशाकें डिजाइन कीं।

2021 प्रसिद्ध ब्रिटिश राजनीतिज्ञ, साउथेंड वेस्ट के लिए संसद सदस्य डेविड एम्स का निधन हुआ।

Lucretius's only known work is the philosophical poem De Rerum Natura, a didactic expression about the principles and philosophy of Epicureanism. It has been translated into English as On the Nature of Things and On the Nature of the Universe.

Publius Virgilius Maro, Virgil in English, was born in 70 BC in Cisalpine Gaul, Italy. Virgilius was an ancient Roman poet of the Augustan period. He composed three of the most famous poems in Latin literature, the Eclogues, the Georgics, and the epic Aeneid.

412 Theophilus died in Alexandria, Ancient Greece. Theophilus was the 23rd Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the Seat of St. Mark. He became Pope at a time of conflict between the new leading Christians in Alexandria and the pagan establishment, each of whom was supported by a segment of the Alexandrian population.

1240 Razia Sultan, the head of the Delhi Sultanate, passed away. Razia has the distinction of being the first successful female ruler of India. Raziat-ud-Dunya wa ud-Din, known as Razia Sultan, was the first female Muslim ruler of the Indian subcontinent and the only female Muslim ruler of Delhi. Razia, born in Badaun in 1205, died in Kaithal, Haryana.
