392 प्रभावशाली लोगों की एक परिष आर्बोगैस्ट ने यूजीनियस को पश्चिमी रोमन सम्राट चुना।

408 स्टिलिचो रोमन सेना में कमांडर, पश्चिमी रोमन साम्राज्य में सबसे शक्तिशाली व्यक्ति और सम्राट थियोडोसियस प्रथम की भतीजी सेरेना से करने वाले, कम उम्र के राजकुमार होनोरियस का संरक्षक ने बर्बर और रोमन दुश्मनों के खिलाफ नौ साल के संघर्ष किया। बाद में राजनीतिक और सैन्य आपदाओं कारण होनोरियस के दरबार में उसके दुश्मनों को उसे सत्ता से हटाने की अनुमति दे दी गई। बाद में उसे फांसी 22 अगस्त 408 को दी गई।

851 जेंगलैंड की लड़ाई में एरीस्पो ने जेंगलैंड के ब्रेटन शहर के पास बाल्ड चार्ल्स को हराया।

1138 यॉर्कशायर के नॉर्थहेलर्टन के पास एक युद्ध में इंग्लैंड की सेना ने स्कॉटिश सेना को पराजित कर वापस भागने को मजबूर किया।

1320 नसीरूद्दीन खुसरू को दिल्ली में ग्यासुद्दीन तुगलक यानी गाजी मलिक ने हराया।

1485 बोसवर्थ फील्ड युद्ध में इंग्लैंड के रिचर्ड तृतीय की यॉर्किस्ट सेना को रिचमंड के अर्ल हेनरी ट्यूडर के नेतृत्व वाली लैंसस्ट्रियन सेना ने हराया।

1559 स्पेनिश आर्चबिशप बार्टोलोमे कैरांजा को धर्म विरोधी आरोपित कर गिरफ्तार किया गया।

1627 फ्रांस के कैथोलिक और प्रोटेस्टेंट ईसाइयों के मध्य अंतिम युद्ध हुआ।

1639 ब्रिटिश ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी ने मद्रास (अब तमिलनाडु की वर्तमान राजधानी चेन्नई) की स्थापना की। मद्रास शहर और ब्रिटिश शासन वाले प्रेसीडेंसी मद्रास प्रेसीडेंसी दोनों के लिए संदर्भित किया गया था। स्वतंत्रता के बाद, 15 अगस्त 1947 को मद्रास प्रेसीडेंसी मद्रास प्रांत बन गया। 26 जनवरी 1950 को भारत सरकार ने इसे मद्रास राज्य के रूप में गठित किया। 1956 के राज्य पुनर्गठन अधिनियम में राज्य की सीमाओं को भाषाई आधार पर पुनर्गठित किया गया। 14 जनवरी 1969 को राज्य का नाम बदलकर तमिलनाडु कर दिया गया, मद्रास तमिलनाडु राज्य की राजधानी बना। 1996 में तमिलनाडु सरकार ने आधिकारिक तौर पर नाम मद्रास से बदलकर चेन्नई कर दिया।

1849 ऑस्ट्रिया ने इटली के शहर वेनिस में चालक रहित गुब्बारों से पहला हवाई हमला किया।

1851 ऑस्ट्रेलिया में सोने के खदानों की खोज हुई।

1894 मोहनदास कर्मचंद गांधी यानी महात्मा गाँधी ने दक्षिण अफ्रीका के नेटाल में भारतीय कांग्रेस की स्थापना की।

1904 प्रसिद्ध चीनी सर्वाेच्च नेता देंग जियाओ पिंग का जन्म हुआ।

1910 जापान ने पांच साल तक कोरिया को अपने संरक्षण में रखने के बाद उस पर कब्जा किया।

1914 ब्रिटिश और जर्मन सैनिकों के मध्य बेल्जियम में पहला युद्ध हुआ।

1915 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय फिल्म और रंगमंच अभिनेता, निर्देशक और नाटककार सोंभु मित्रा का जन्म हुआ

1918 भारत के पहले पायलट इंद्रलाल राय प्रथम विश्वयुद्ध के दौरान लंदन में जर्मनी के साथ हवाई लड़ाई में मारे गए।

1922 आयरिश नेशनल आर्मी के कमांडर-इन-चीफ जनरल माइकल कोलिंस की पश्चिम कॉर्क में हत्या कर दी गई।

1924 हिंदी व्यंग्य विधा के आधार स्तंभ कहे गये विख्यात व्यंग्यकार, लेखक हरिशंकर परसाई का जन्म हुआ।

1925 प्रख्यात पाकिस्तानी लेखक, नाटककार, टेलीविजन प्रसारक, चिंतक असफाक अहमद का जन्म श्री मुक्तसर साहिब, फिरोजपुर पंजाब में हुआ।

1932 ब्रिटिश ब्राॅडकास्टिंग कारपोररेशन यानी बीबीसी ने पहली बार प्रायोगिक टेलीविजन प्रसारण किया। प्रसारण में खुद टेलीविजन के आविष्कारक और इलेक्ट्रिकल इंजीनियर जॉन लॉगी बेयर्ड लगे और इस  में बेयर्ड खुद भी स्क्रीन पर आए थे। दर्शकों के लिए जू-जित्सु, पेंटिंग और सी-लॉयन भी स्क्रिन पर दिखाए गए। बेयर्ड ने बीबीसी को धन्यवाद देते हुए कहा कि ये अब तक का सबसे बढ़िया टीवी प्रसारण है।

1934 ग्यारहवीं लोकसभा के सदस्य इलियास आजमी का जन्म हुआ।

1955 प्रसिद्ध दक्षिण भारतीय फिल्म अभिनेता और राजनीतिज्ञ चिरंजीवी का जन्म हुआ।

1959 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय न्यायाधीश और बाद में असम और उड़ीसा के राज्यपाल रहे सैयद फजल अली का निधन हुआ।

1962 विश्व के पहले परमाणु सम्पन्न समुद्री जहाज ने वर्जीनिया से जॉर्जिया तक की यात्रा पूरी की। इसी दिन फ्रांसीसी राष्ट्रपति चार्ल्स डी गॉल पर जानलेवा हमला किया गया।

1963 अमेरिकी एयरफोर्स के जोसेफ वॉकर हायपरसोनिक रॉकेट एक्स-15 से अंतरिक्ष यात्रा पर गये। जोसेफ दो बार अंतरिक्ष की यात्रा करने वाले पहले व्यक्ति बने।

1969 अमेरिका में समुद्री तूफान आने से 255 लोगों की मौत।

1974 जाने माने गायक, अभिनेता और माॅडल सुधांशु पांडेय का जन्म हुआ।

1976 जानी मानी ओडिसी नृत्यांगना और क्रिकेटर सौरव गांगुली की पत्नी दोना गांगुली का जन्म हुआ।

1978 केन्या के पहले राष्ट्रपति जोमो केन्याता का 83 साल की उम्र में निधन हुआ।

1979 राष्ट्रपति नीलम संजीव रेड्डी ने चौधरी चरण सिंह के इस्तीफे के बाद लोकसभा भंग की और चुनाव होने तक प्रधानमंत्री पद संभालने का जिम्मा चरण सिंह को दिया।

1982 भारत के जाने माने फोटोग्राफर, माॅडल और अभिनेता करन कपूर के बेटे फिल्म अभिनेता और माॅडल कुणाल करन कपूर का जन्म हुआ।

1985 जानी मानी टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री, भरतनाट्यम नृत्यांगना और माॅडल देबोलीना भट्टाचार्जी का जन्म हुआ।

1986 जाने माने टेलीविजन अभिनेता अविनाश सचदेव का जन्म बंबई में हुआ। इसी दिन पवित्रा पूनिया के नाम से सुपरिचित टेलीविजन और फिल्म अभिनेत्री तथा माॅडल नेहा सिंह का जन्म बागपत यूपी में हुआ।

1990 जाने माने टेलीविजन धारावाहिक अभिनेता, फिल्म कलाकार और माॅडल पुरु छिब्बर का जन्म दिल्ली में हुआ।

1993 भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के प्रसिद्ध राजनीतिज्ञ और कर्नाटक के मुख्यमंत्री हुए आर. गुंडु राव का निधन हुआ।

1996 तमिलनाडु सरकार ने मद्रास का नाम बदलकर चेन्नई कर दिया। इसी दिन मिस दीवा यूनिवर्स 2018 विजेता एवं मिस यूनिवर्स 2018 की प्रतिभागी, माॅडल, सौंदर्य एवं फिटनेस टीचर नेहल चुडासमा का जन्म मुंबई में हुआ।

1999 मजदूर अधिकारों के लिए कार्यरत अंतर्राष्ट्रीय श्रम संगठन द्वारा समान कार्य के लिए समान पारिश्रमिक की कार्य योजना प्रारंभ हुई।

2002 काठमांडू में सार्क विदेश मंत्रियों का सम्मेलन सम्पन्न हुआ इसी दिन नेपाल में हवाई दुर्घटना में 16 व्यक्ति मारे गये।

2005 रूसी टेनिस खिलाड़ी मारिया शारापोवा अमेरिका की प्रमुख टेनिस स्टार लिंडसे डेवनपोर्ट को हरा कर नंबर एक खिलाड़ी बनीं। मारिया युरयेव्ना शरापोवा का जन्म सोवियत संघ (वर्तमान रूस) के साइबेरिया प्रांत में हुआ था। 1993 में नौ साल की उम्र में शारापोवा बेहतर भविष्य की तलाश में पिता यूरी के साथ रूस छोड़कर अमेरिका के फ्लोरिडा प्रांत में चली गई थीं।

2007 मिस्र के पुरातत्त्वविदों ने पश्चिम रेगिस्तान के सिवा क्षेत्र में लगभग 20 लाख साल पुराने मानव के पद-चिह्नों का पता लगाया। 2007 में इसी दिन अंतर्राष्ट्रीय अंतरिक्ष स्टेशन की मरम्मत के लिए दो सप्ताह के मिशन पर गया अंतरिक्ष यान एंडेवर फ्लोरिडा में कैनेडी स्पेस सेंटर पर सुरक्षित उतरा। 

2008 मध्य प्रदेश सरकार ने बनवासियों के लिए साधारण वन अपराध मामले और मुआवजा वसूली खत्म करने का निर्णय लिया।

2012 सीरिया के गृहयुद्ध में 47 लोग मारे गए। इसके साथ ही 2012 में इसी दिन केन्या में दो जनजातीय समूह के बीच युद्ध में 48 लोग मारे गए।

2013 अमेरिकी शेयर बाजार नैसडेक इलेक्ट्रॉनिक स्टॉक एक्सचेंज कंप्यूटरों में आई खराबी के कारण तीन घंटे के लिए बंद हुआ।

2014 ज्ञानपीठ पुरस्कार’ प्राप्त प्रसिद्ध कन्नड़ साहित्यकार, आलोचक और शिक्षाविद यू. आर. अनंतमूर्ति का निधन हुआ।

2017 मणिपुर के छठवें मुख्यमंत्री हुए ऋषांग कीशिंग का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन भारतीय उच्चतम न्यायालय ने मुस्लिमों की 3 तलाक की व्यवस्था को गैरकानूनी करार दिया।

2018 जानी मानी भारतीय पिस्टल शूटर और धाविका राही सरनोबत 25 मीटर पिस्टल निशानेबाजी में एशियाई खेलों की निशानेबाजी स्पर्धा में स्वर्ण पदक जीतने वाली पहली भारतीय महिला बनीं। इसी दिन भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के वरिष्ठ राजनेता गुरुदास कामथ का निधन हुआ। 2018 में इसी दिन एड किंग, प्रसिद्ध अमेरिकी संगीतकार एवं इसी दिन कृष्णा रेड्डी, भारतीय प्रिंटमेकर, मूर्तिकार और शिक्षक का निधन हुआ।

2020 धर्म या विश्वास के आधार पर हिंसा के कृत्यों के पीड़ितों की स्मृति में अंतर्राष्ट्रीय दिवस का आयोजन वैश्विक पैमाने पर संयुक्त राष्ट्र महासभा ने किया। महासभा ने 2019 में अपने 73वें संकल्प ए/आरईएस/73/296 को अपनाया जिसमें धार्मिक लोगों सहित व्यक्तियों को निशाना बनाकर जारी हिंसा और आतंकवादी कृत्यों की कड़ी निंदा की गई। अल्पसंख्यक, धर्म या विश्वास के आधार पर या उसके नाम पर। सदस्य देशों ने आतंकवाद और हिंसक उग्रवाद के सभी कृत्यों, तरीकों और प्रथाओं की, इसके सभी रूपों और अभिव्यक्तियों में, चाहे कहीं भी और किसी के भी द्वारा किया गया हो, उनकी प्रेरणा की परवाह किए बिना, अपनी स्पष्ट निंदा की पुष्टि की, और दोहराया कि आतंकवाद और हिंसक उग्रवाद और जब आतंकवाद, उसके सभी रूपों और अभिव्यक्तियों में अनुकूल हो, तो उसे किसी भी धर्म, राष्ट्रीयता, सभ्यता या जातीय समूह से नहीं जोड़ा जाना चाहिए।

In 392 Arbogast, a council of influential people, elected Eugenius as Western Roman Emperor.

In 408 Stilicho, commander in the Roman army, the most powerful man in the Western Roman Empire, and guardian of the underage prince Honorius, married to Serena, niece of Emperor Theodosius I, waged a nine-year struggle against barbarians and Roman enemies. Later political and military disasters allowed his enemies at Honorius' court to remove him from power. He was later hanged on 22 August 408.

In 851 Erispo defeated Charles the Bald near the Breton city of Jengland at the Battle of Jengland.

1138 In a battle near Northallerton, Yorkshire, the English army defeats the Scottish army and forces them to flee.

1320 Nasiruddin Khusrau was defeated by Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq i.e. Ghazi Malik in Delhi.

1639 The British East India Company founded Madras (now Chennai, the present capital of Tamil Nadu). Referred to both the city of Madras and the British-ruled Presidency of Madras Presidency. After independence, the Madras Presidency became the Madras Province on 15 August 1947. On 26 January 1950, the Government of India constituted it as Madras State. In the States Reorganization Act of 1956, the state boundaries were reorganized on linguistic basis. The name of the state was changed to Tamil Nadu on 14 January 1969, with Madras becoming the capital of Tamil Nadu State. In 1996, the Tamil Nadu government officially changed the name from Madras to Chennai.
