338 प्राचीन यूनान के थीजोरियन पर मेसिडोनियन सेना ने मेसेडोनियाई साम्राज्य को कायम रखते हुए चेरोनिआ की लड़ाई में एथेंस और थेब्स की संयुक्त सेना को हराया।

416 प्रशासनिक और समाज व्यवस्था सुधार प्रयासों के लिए नियंता अभिजात वर्ग में अलोकप्रिय हो चुके रोमन सम्राट मेजरियन को पदच्युत कर दिया गया और उसकी हत्या कर दी गई। 

1610 समुद्री खोजकर्ता हेनरी हडसन ने प्रशांत महासागर में नॉर्थवेस्ट पैसेज की खाड़ी को खोजा और इसे हडसन खाड़ी नाम दिया।

1714 विश्व विख्यात फ्रैंच फिजिसिस्ट, गणितज्ञ और आविष्कारक और खासतौर पर भाप की शक्ति से चलने वाले इंजन का आविष्कार करने वाले डेनिस पापेन का निधन हुआ।

1763 बंगाल के मुर्शिदाबाद पर कब्जा करने के बाद ब्रिटिश सेना का गिरिया में मीर कासिम से युद्ध हुआ।

1790 पहली बार अमेरिका में जनगणना की गई। उस समय अमेरिका की जनसंख्या 39 लाख के आसपास थी, जिसमें से करीब 7 लाख जेलों में बंद कैदी भी थे।

1802 नेपोलियन बोनापार्ट को जनमत संग्रह में फ्रांस के प्रथम कौंसुल के रूप में चुना गया।

1831 नीदरलैंड की सेना ने दस दिनों के युद्ध, घेराबंदी अभियान के बाद बेल्जियम पर कब्जा किया।

1858 ब्रिटिश सरकार ने गवर्मेंट ऑफ इंडिया बनाकर ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी से भारतीय प्रशासन अपने हाथों में लेने वाला विधेयक पारित किया।

1870 लंदन में थेम्स नदी के नीचे दुनिया के पहले अंडरग्राउंड रेलवे की शुरुआत हुई।

1877 जाने माने कांग्रेसी राजनेता और मध्यप्रदेश के प्रथम मुख्यमंत्री पंडित रवि शंकर शुक्ल का जन्म हुआ।

1878 भारतीय राष्ट्रीय ध्वज तिरंगे के अभिकल्पक पिंगलि वेंकय्या का जन्म हुआ।

1861 विख्यात भारतीय वैज्ञानिक, रसायन विज्ञान के जनक माने जाने वाले प्रफुल्ल चंद्र राय का जन्म हुआ।

1884 वेनेजुएला के विश्व प्रसिद्ध उपन्यासकार रोमुलो गालेगोस का जन्म कराकास में हुआ। इनके उपन्यासों में वेनेजुएला के ग्रामीण जीवन का बड़ा रोचक और यथार्थ चित्रण है। वेनेजुएला के सामाजिक जीवन की विशेषताओं के साथ ही ये प्राकृतिक वातावरण को भी सजीव रूप में प्रस्तुत करते हैं। पाठक गालेगोस के उपन्यासों में चरित्रों और उनकी कहानी से ही परिचित नहीं होता बल्कि उसे बेनिजुएला देश एवं वहाँ के सामाजिक जीवन की पूरी झाँकी मिल जाती है। रोमुलो गालेगोस के उपन्यासों में सभ्यता और बर्बरता के बीच मच रहे संघर्ष का भी चित्रण मिलता है। आधुनिकता के व्यापक प्रभाव के कारण किस प्रकार जीवन के पुराने तौर तरीके बदल रहे हैं और नवीन मूल्यों की स्वीकृति कितने तीव्र विरोध के बाद हो पाती है यह उनके उपन्यासों मे बड़े ही मार्मिक ढंग से दिखाया गया है। गालेगोस के प्रारंभिक रचनाओं में मनोवैज्ञानिक दृष्टि से असाधारण चरित्रों के अध्ययन में इनकी विशेष रूचि का आभास मिलता है लेकिन बाद की रचनाओं में जीवन को यथार्थ रूप में प्रस्तुत करने का प्रयास है। दोना बारबरा सन् 1929 में मैट्रिड से प्रकाशित हुआ, इन्हें अंतरराष्ट्रीय ख्याति प्राप्त हुई। गालेगास वेनेजुएला के राष्ट्रपति भी रहे।

1903 मैसेडोनिया के क्रांतिकारी संगठन ने मैसेडोनिया में ओटोमन साम्राज्य के खिलाफ इलिंडन विद्रोह शुरू किया।

1921 विख्यात इतालवी संगीतकार, गायक एनरिको कारूसो का निधन हुआ।

1922 चीन में समुद्री तूफान टाइफून से लगभग साठ हजार लोगों की मौत हुई। 1922 में इसी दिन भारत के प्रसिद्ध उद्यमियों में से एक जी.पी. बिड़ला का जन्म हुआ

1923 संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका के 29वें राष्ट्रपति वारेन जी हार्डिंग का उनके कार्यालय में ही निधन हुआ। केल्विन कूलिज संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका के 30वें राष्ट्रपति बने।

1929 अमेरिका के कंसास, ओकला, पश्चिमी मिसौरी में सूखा और अत्यधिक तापमान इतिहास के सभी कीर्तिमान ध्वस्त कर गया। कंसास में यह 107 डिग्री तक जा पहुंचा।

1930 भारत के एक रसायनज्ञ, वैज्ञानिक, चिकित्सक चुनीलाल बसु का निधन हुआ।

1931 हिंदी के जाने माने कवि एवं गीतकार उमाकांत मालवीय का जन्म हुआ।

1932 इलेक्ट्रॉन के एक कण, पॉजीट्रान की खोज कार्ल डी एंडीसन ने पूरी की।

1934 जर्मनी के राष्ट्रपति पॉल हिंडेनबर्ग के निधन के बाद हिटलर ने नए चुनाव करवाने के बजाय राष्ट्रपति के पद को रिक्त रखकर समस्त शक्तियां राष्ट्रप्रमुख को हस्तांतरित करने का कानून मंत्रीमंडल से पास करवा लिया। अब हिटलर पूरी तरह जर्मनी का सबसे शक्तिशाली नियंता बन गया।

1935 ब्रिटिश सरकार ने भारत सरकार अधिनियम पारित कर बर्मा और अदन को भारत से अलग किया।

1939 विख्यात भौतिक विज्ञानी लेओ स्जीलार्ड ने अल्बर्ट आइंस्टीन द्वारा हस्ताक्षरित एक पत्र अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति फ्रैंकलिन रूजवेल्ट को अपने एक पत्र के साथ भेजा जिसमें चेतावनी दी गई कि जर्मनी परमाणु बम विकसित कर सकता है, इसलिए अमेरिका को भी परमाणु बम विकास करना चाहिए। प्रसिद्ध वैज्ञानिक अल्बर्ट आइंस्टीन ने परमाणु हथियार अनुसंधान कार्यक्रम शुरू करने के लिए राष्ट्रपति रूजवेल्ट को पत्र लिखा। इस तरह मैनहट्टन परियोजना प्रारंभ हुई।

1943 दूसरे विश्वयुद्ध के मध्य जापानी नौसेना ने अमेरिकी जहाज पीटी-109 को डुबा दिया। यही घटना विश्वयुद्ध में अमेरिका के शामिल होने की वजह बनी।

1944 तुर्की ने जर्मनी के साथ राजनयिक संबंध खत्म किये। 1944 में इसी दिन प्रसिद्ध भारतीय कवि, विद्वान, आलोचक तथा अनुवादक प्रकाशराव असावडी का जन्म हुआ।

1952 विख्यात हिंदी व्यंग्यकार और हृदय रोग विशेषज्ञ डाॅ. ज्ञान चतुर्वेदी का जन्म मऊरानीपुर, झांसी, उत्तर प्रदेश में हुआ।

1956 भाजपा नेता और गुजरात के मुख्यमंत्री हुए विजय रूपाणी का जन्म बर्मा की राजधानी रंगून में हुआ। अभी बर्मा को मयान्मार और रंगून को यांगून कहते हैं।

1958 जाने माने भारतीय क्रिकेटर अरशद अयूब का जन्म हुआ।

1964 जानी मानी सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता, नाट्य लेखिका और रंगकर्मी, नाट्य निर्देशिका स्मिता भारती का जन्म भिलाई में हुआ।

1966 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय क्रिकेटर एम.वी.श्रीधर का जन्म हुआ।

1969 एंजेलिका रिवेरा हर्टाडो का मैक्सिको सिटी में जन्म हुआ।  एंजेलिका लोकप्रिय, बोल्ड, खूबसूरत मैक्सिकन गायिका, मॉडल और टेलीनोवेला अभिनेत्री हैं और पूर्व राष्ट्रपति एनरिक पेना नीटो की पत्नी के रूप में 2012 से 2018 तक मैक्सिको की प्रथम महिला थीं।

1970 भारतीय विदेश सेवा की पहली महिला अधिकारी श्रीमती सी बेलियप्पा मुतम्मा भारत की पहली महिला राजदूत बनीं, जिन्हें हंगरी का राजदूत बनाया गया। इसी दिन भारतीय क्रिकेटर फिलो वालेस का जन्म हुआ।

1974 यूटीवी मोशन पिक्चर के मुखिया, जाने माने फिल्मकार सिद्धार्थ राय कपूर का जन्म हुआ।

1979 प्रसिद्ध हिंदी चलचित्र अभिनेता और गायक करन दीवान का निधन हुआ।

1980 इटली में हुए बम धमाके में 85 लोगों की मौत हो गई। 1980 में इसी दिन पद्म भूषण से सम्मानित प्रसिद्ध भारतीय मूर्तिकार रामकिंकर बैज का निधन हुआ।

1981 मोहम्मद अली राजई ने ईरान के दूसरे राष्ट्रपति के रूप में शपथ ग्रहण की।

1982 जाने माने फिल्म एवं टेलीविजन अभिनेता रुशलान मुमताज का जन्म हुआ।

1983 जानी मानी खूबसूरत, बोल्ड फिल्म एवं टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल युविका चौधरी का जन्म बड़ौत में हुआ।

1984 यूरोप की मानवाधिकार अदालत ने ब्रिटेन के एक नागरिक की फोन टैपिंग को यूरोपीय संधि का उल्लंघन बताया।

1985 अमेरिका में जंबो जेट विमान दुर्घटनाग्रस्त हुआ जिसमें 130 लोग मारे गये।

1987 विश्वनाथन आनंद विश्व जूनियर शतरंज चैम्पियनशिप जीतने वाले पहले एशियाई बने।

1989 खूबसूरत, बोल्ड, प्रसिद्ध जानी मानी दक्षिण भारतीय फिल्म अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल शीला कौर का जन्म मद्रास में हुआ।

1990 इराक के एक लाख से ज्यादा सैनिकों ने 700 टैंकों के साथ सुबह सवेरे कुवैत पर हमला करके उस पर कब्जा कर लिया। यह पहले खाड़ी युद्ध की वजह बना।

1993 जानी मानी खूबसूरत बोल्ड दक्षिण भारतीय फिल्म अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल नताशा दोषी का जन्म हुआ।

1999 रात करीब पौने 2 बजे पश्चिम बंगाल के उत्तर दिनाजपुर के गाइसाल स्टेशन पर दोनों ट्रेनों के बीच भीषण टक्कर हुई। टक्कर इतनी जोरदार थी कि इंजन समेत कई बोगियां हवा में 40 फीट तक ऊंची उछल गईं। टक्कर से बोगियों में आग लग गई और जोरदार विस्फोट हुआ। यात्रियों के शरीर के अंग उड़कर आसपास के भवनों पर गिरे और टकराए। बोगियों में क्षमता से कई गुना ज्यादा लोग सवार थे। इस वजह से आशंका जताई जाती है कि हादसे में करीब 1 हजार लोग मारे गए। इसी दिन 1999 में चीन ने लंबी दूरी 8000 किमी की सतह से सतह पर मार करने वाली मिसाइल का परीक्षण किया।

2001 पाकिस्तान से भारत ने चीनी आयात को मंजूरी दी।

2003 संयुक्त राष्ट्र सुरक्षा परिषद ने लाइबेरिया में संघर्ष विराम लागू करने के लिए सेना भेजने की अनुमति दी।

2004 अमेरिका की लिंडसे डेवनपोर्ट ने रूस की मिस्कीनी को हराकर सान डियागो टेनिस चैम्पियनशिप का महिला एकल खिताब जीता।

2007 श्रीलंका के जाफना के दक्षिणी द्वीप कियुशु में सुबह आये भयानक तूफान उगासी से जान माल का बहुत नुकसान हुआ। 2007 में इसी दिन पराग्वे की राजधानी आसुनसियोन में एक सुपर बाजार में आग लग गयी, जिसमे 300 लोग मरे।

2008 भारतीय सार्वजनिक क्षेत्र के यूनियन बैंक ने हांगकांग में अपनी पहली शाखा खोली। 2008 में इसी दिन सुधीर कुमार चतुर्वेदी ने पावर ग्रिड कार्पोरेशन के नये अध्यक्ष और प्रबंध निदेशक के रूप में अपना कार्यभार संभाला।

2009 कांग्रेस के वरिष्ठ नेता एवं गुजरात के राज्यपाल रहे देवेंद्र नाथ द्विवेदी का निधन हुआ।

2010 पाकिस्तान के खैबर-पख्तूनख्वा प्रदेश में आई बाढ़ के कारण 1000 से अधिक लोगों की मौत हुई। इसी दिन तादातोशी अकिबा सहित 7 व्यक्तियों को फिलीपींस की राजधानी मनीला में 2010 का रेमन मैगसेसे पुरस्कार प्रदान किया गया। 2010 में इसी दिन भारतीय सिनेमा के अभिनेता कमल कपूर का निधन हुआ।

2012 लंदन ओलंपिक में भारत ने कुल 6 पदक जीते जिसमें 2 रजत और 4 कांस्य शामिल हैं।

2013 एकाधिकार विरोधी कानूनों के उल्लंघन के आरोप में चीन में अमेरिकी बहुराष्ट्रीय हेल्थकेयर कंपनी जॉनसन एंड जॉनसन पर 85 हजार यूरो डालर का जुर्माना लगाया गया।

2018 तकनीकी कंपनी एपल की मार्केट वैल्यू 1 ट्रिलियन डॉलर से ज्यादा हो गई। एपल इस उपलब्धि को हासिल करने वाली पहली पब्लिक लिस्टेड अमेरिकी कंपनी बन गई।

1970 Mrs. C. Belliappa Muthamma, the first woman Indian Foreign Service officer, became India's first woman Ambassador to Hungary. Indian cricketer Philo Wallace was born on this day.

1974 Siddharth Roy Kapur, noted filmmaker, head of UTV Motion Pictures, was born.

1979 Karan Dewan, famous Hindi film actor and singer, passed away.

1980: 85 people died in a bomb blast in Italy. On this day in 1980, the famous Indian sculptor Ramkinkar Baij, who was awarded the Padma Bhushan, passed away.

1981 Mohammad Ali Rajai is sworn in as the second President of Iran.

1982 Rushlaan Mumtaz, noted film and television actor, was born.

1983 Yuvika Chowdhary, well-known beautiful, bold film and television actress and model, was born in Baraut.

1984 The European Court of Human Rights declared phone tapping of a British citizen a breach of a European treaty.

1985 Jumbo jet plane crashed in America killing 130 people.

1987 Viswanathan Anand became the first Asian to win the World Junior Chess Championship.

1989 Beautiful, bold, well-known South Indian film actress and model Sheela Kaur was born in Madras.

1990 More than one lakh soldiers of Iraq attacked Kuwait early in the morning with 700 tanks and captured it. This led to the first Gulf War.

1993 Natasha Doshi, well-known beautiful bold South Indian film actress and model, was born.

In 1999, there was a fierce collision between the two trains at Gaisal station of Uttar Dinajpur in West Bengal at around 2.45 pm. The collision was so strong that several bogies including the engine were thrown up to 40 feet in the air. The bogies caught fire from the collision and there was a loud explosion. Passengers' body parts flew off and crashed into nearby buildings. Many times more people were riding in the bogies than the capacity. Because of this, it is feared that about 1 thousand people died in the accident. On this day in 1999, China tested a long range 8000 km surface-to-surface missile.
