1718 केप पासर्स की लड़ाई में ब्रिटिश सैनिक बेड़े ने स्पेन के सिसिली को तहस-नहस कर दिया। सिसिली भूमध्य सागर का सबसे बड़ा द्वीप है जो इटली प्रायद्वीप से मेसीना जलमडरूमध्य के द्वारा अलग होता है। अब यह इटली का स्वायत्त क्षेत्र है। यह ट्यूनीसिया से 90 मील चौड़े सिसली जलमडरूमध्य से अलग और सार्डीनिया से 272 किलोमीटर दूर है। इसकी आकृति त्रिभुजाकार है। महंगी रिहायसी और पर्यटन स्थली है।

1778 जिमनास्टिक्स खेल को प्रारंभ करने वाले जर्मन शिक्षक फ्रेडरिक लुडविग क्रिस्टाॅफ जाॅन का लाॅन्ज, जर्मनी में जन्म हुआ।

1828 विलियम बर्नर को बर्न सेंट एडमंड्स, इंग्लैंड में मारिया मार्टेन की हत्या के जुर्म में फांसी दी गई।

1863 कंबोडिया फ्रांस का संरक्षित देश बना।

1892 अंग्रेज भारतीय क्रिकेटर आर्ची विलेस का जन्म हुआ

1908 उन्नीस वर्ष से भी कम आयु के प्रसिद्ध क्रांतिकारी खुदीराम बोस को फांसी दी गई। कोलकाता में मुख्य प्रांतीय जज किंग्सफोर्ड भारतीय क्रांतिकारियों को कठोर सजा देने के लिए कुख्यात थे। किंग्सफोर्ड भारतीय क्रांतिकारियों को खटक रहे थे। अंग्रेज सरकार ने इसे भांपकर जज किंग्सफोर्ड का तबादला मुजफ्फरपुर कर दिया। जज किंग्सफोर्ड को मारने की जिम्मेदारी दो युवा क्रांतिकारियों को मिली- खुदीराम बोस और प्रफुल्ल चाकी। दोनों किंग्सफोर्ड के पीछे मुजफ्फरपुर, बिहार में लग गये। यहां दोनों क्रांतिकारियों ने जज किंग्सफोर्ड की रेकी की। जज किंग्सफोर्ड रोजाना यूरोपियन क्लब से बग्घी में निकलते थे। दोनों ने योजना बनाई कि जिस बग्घी में जज किंग्सफोर्ड सवार होंगे, उसे विस्फोट से उड़ा दिया जाएगा। 30 अप्रैल 1908 को दोनों क्रांतिकारी अपनी योजना को पूरा करने के लिए तैयार थे। क्लब से एक बग्घी बाहर निकली और दोनों ने उस पर बम फेंक दिया, लेकिन बग्घी में जज किंग्सफोर्ड की जगह दो महिलाएं सवार थीं। हमले में दोनों की मौत हो गई। जज किंग्सफोर्ड को मारने का प्लान फेल हो गया। हमले के बाद दोनों क्रांतिकारी भाग निकले। प्रफुल्ल चाकी समस्तीपुर में एक रेलगाड़ी में बैठ गए, लेकिन रेल में सवार एक पुलिस सबइंस्पेक्टर ने चाकी को पहचान लिया और पुलिस को सूचना दे दी। अगले स्टेशन पर चाकी को पकड़ने के लिए पुलिस तैयार खड़ी थी। चाकी ने भागने की कोशिश की, लेकिन चारों तरफ से घिरे होने की वजह से भाग नहीं सके और उन्होंने खुद को गोली मार ली। इधर वैनी पूसा रोड स्टेशन से खुदीराम बोस गिरफ्तार कर लिए गए। अंग्रेज सरकार ने केवल 8 दिन में ही सुनवाई पूरी कर दी। 13 जुलाई 1908 को फैसला आया जिसमें खुदीराम बोस को फांसी की सजा सुनाई गई। इस फैसले के खिलाफ कोलकाता हाईकोर्ट में अपील की गई, लेकिन जज ने फांसी की सजा बहाल रखी। फांसी का दिन तय हुआ- 11 अगस्त 1908। खुदीराम बोस अपने हाथ में गीता लेकर निडर होकर फांसी के तख्त पर चढ़े। कहते हैं कि उनके चेहरे पर फांसी का बिल्कुल भी खौफ नहीं था। मात्र 18 साल 8 महीने और 8 दिन की उम्र में शहीद हुए खुदीराम बोस की शहादत ने युवाओं में आजादी की एक नई अलख जगाई।

1912 मैक्सिको सिटी के पास एक रेल पर जापटिस्ट विद्रोहियों के हमले में 35 सैनिक और 20 नागरिक मारे गए और अनेक घायल हुए।

1914 फ्रांस ने ऑस्ट्रिया और हंगरी पर आक्रमण की घोषणा की। 1914 में इसी दिन पोलैंड से यहूदियों को निकाला गया।

1924 विख्यात भारतीय शास्त्रीय संगीतज्ञ लालमणि मिश्र का जन्म हुआ।

1943 पाकिस्तान के सेना प्रमुख और निर्वाचित सरकार का तख्तापलट कर सत्ता पर कब्जा करने वाले जनरल परवेज मुशर्रफ का जन्म पुरानी दिल्ली में हुआ।

1944 अमेरिका ने सुमात्रा द्वीप समूह के पालेमबेंग क्षेत्र पर हवाई हमला किया।

1948 द्वितीय विश्व युद्ध के बाद पहली बार ओलंपिक खेलों का आयोजन लंदन में किया गया।

1949 भारतीय रिजर्व बैंक के बाइसवें गवर्नर डुव्वुरी सुब्बाराव का जन्म हुआ।

1952 जाने माने भारतीय मूल के इंडोनेशियाई अमीर और उद्योगपति, कारोबारी श्री प्रकाश लोहिया का जन्म कलकत्ता में हुआ। उनका मुख्य व्यवसाय टैक्सटाइल, पेट्रोकैमीकल है। 

1954 भारतीय क्रिकेटर यशपाल शर्मा का जन्म हुआ। 1954 में इसी दिन भारतीय क्रिकेटर एम. वी. नरसिम्हा राव का जन्म हुआ।

1960 अफ्रीकी देश चाड ने फ्रांस से स्वतंत्रता हासिल की।

1961 दादरा नगर हवेली का भारत में विलय हुआ और इसे केंद्र शासित प्रदेश बनाया गया। इसी दिन जाने माने फिल्मकार, अभिनेता और टेलीविजन शो प्रस्तोता सुनील शेट्टी का जन्म हुआ।

1962 सोवियत संघ ने वोस्टोक-3 स्पेसक्राफ्ट लॉन्च किया। इसमें सवार एंड्रीयन निकोलायेव ने 4 दिन के भीतर 64 बार धरती की परिक्रमा की थी। ऐसा करने वाले वे पहले अंतरिक्ष यात्री हैं।

1967 प्रसिद्ध हिंदी पत्रकार, समीक्षक, साहित्यकार, आलोचक तथा सम्पादक नंददुलारे वाजपेयी का निधन हुआ।

1974 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय महिला क्रिकेटर अंजू जैन का जन्म हुआ।

1975 जानी मानी भारतीय माॅडल और फिल्म अभिनेत्री जेस्सी रंधावा का जन्म जयपुर में हुआ। इसी दिन ब्रिटिश लेलैंड मोटर कॉर्पोरेशन का ब्रिटिश सरकार ने अधिग्रहण किया।

1976 दक्षिण अफ्रीका के केपटाउन में दंगो में 17 लोग मारे गए।

1983 जानी मानी टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री और माॅडल मेलिसा पाइस का जन्म गोवा में हुआ।

1984 सोवियत रूस ने भूमिगत परमाणु परीक्षण किया। इसी दिन 1984 में लॉस एंजेल्स ओलंपिक खेलों में दक्षिण अफ्रीकी मूल की ब्रिटिश धावक जोला बड 3000 मीटर की दौड़ में अमेरिका की शीर्ष धावक मैरी डेकर से टकरा गईं। मैरी को दौड़ से बाहर होना पड़ा। यह घटना दुनियाभर में खूब चर्चित रही।

1985 फिल्म अभिनेता से राजनेता बने रोनाल्ड रीगन दोबारा अमेरिका के राष्ट्रपति बने।

1988 कहा जाता है कि पाकिस्तान के पेशावर में ओसामा बिन लादेन, आयमान-अल-जवाहिरी और अल फद्ल के बीच हुई बैठक में आतंकी संगठन अल-कायदा का औपचारिक गठन हुआ था। 1989 में सोवियत संघ ने अफगानिस्तान से अपनी सेना वापस बुला ली और इसी साल एक बम विस्फोट में अब्दुल्ला आजम भी मारा गया। अब अल-कायदा पर ओसामा बिन लादेन की पकड़ हो गई। ओसामा बिन लादेन ने धीरे-धीरे अपना नेटवर्क फैलाना शुरू किया। यमन, केन्या, तंजानिया जैसे कई देशों में नेटवर्क बढ़ता गया। इस दौरान अल-कायदा ने कई देशों में अमेरिकी सेना पर हमले भी किए।

1999 यूरोप और एशिया में सदी का अंतिम सूर्यग्रहण दिखा।

2000 फिजी के विद्रोही नेता जार्ज स्पेट पर देशद्रोह का मुकदमा चलाने का निर्णय लिया हुआ। 2000 में इसी दिन प्रसिद्ध दक्षिण भारतीय फिल्म अभिनेता पी. जयराज का निधन हुआ।

2004 भारत और पाकिस्तान ने वांछित अपराधियों की सूचियों की अदला-बदली की। भारत और पाकिस्तान के मध्य आतंकवाद और मादक द्रव्यों की तस्करी सहित आठ मुद्दों पर इस्लामाबाद में वार्ता हुई। इसी दिन संयुक्त राष्ट्र परमाणु ऊर्जा एजेंसी ने ईरान को पाकिस्तान द्वारा परमाणु मदद दिये जाने की पुष्टि की। चीन के कंप्यूटर उद्योग के पितामह चेन चुनशियान का निधन इसी दिन हुआ

2003 उत्तर अटलांटिक संधि संगठन नाटो ने अफगानिस्तान में शांति बल की कमान संभाली।

2005 वायु प्रदूषण के उच्च स्तर पर पहुंचने के कारण मलेशिया ने दो शहरों में आपात की स्थिति घोषित की। कहा कि इंडोनेशिया में भूमि को साफ करने के लिए जलाई जाने वाली आग इस स्थिति की जिम्मेदार है जिससे मल्टिका के जलडमरूमध्य में वायु की गुणवत्ता और दृश्यता पर हानिकारक प्रभाव पड़ा है।

2006 पाकिस्तान ने तीसरी अगोस्टा 90बी श्रेणी की पनडुब्बी का जलावतरण किया।

2007 मोहम्मद हामिद अंसारी भारत के 13वें उपराष्ट्रपति बने। 2007 में इसी दिन महान ब्रिटिश संगीतज्ञ एंथनी विल्सन का निधन हुआ।

2008 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय शूटर अभिनव बिंद्रा ने बीजिंग ओलिंपिक में 10 मीटर एयर राइफल में गोल्ड जीता। किसी भी इंडिविजुअल इवेंट में भारत को मिला ये पहला गोल्ड है। इसी दिन एकीकृत इस्पात मैन्युफैक्चरर्स गोदावरी पावर एंड इस्पात ने छत्तीसगढ़ सरकार के साथ 1570 करोड़ रुपये के सहमति पत्र पर हस्ताक्षर किये।

2010 पाउल कागमे रवांडा के नये राष्ट्रपति बने।

2012 ईरान के तबरीज और अहार में आए भूकंप से 153 लोग मारे गए और करीब 1300 लोग घायल हुए। इसी दिन बांग्लादेश में एक मस्जिद में बिजली गिरने से 13 लोगों की मौत हुई।

2013 पाकिस्तान के काबुल में बाढ़ से 22 लोग मरे।

2017 मिस्र के अलेक्जेंड्रिया में दो यात्री ट्रेनों की टक्कर में कम से कम 41 लोग मारे गए और 179 अन्य घायल हो गए। इसी दिन पोलिश-इजराइली सुपरसेंटेनेरियनय होलोकॉस्ट उत्तरजीवी और दस सबसे उम्रदराज पुरुषों में से एक इजरायल क्रिस्टल एवं सेगुन बकनर, नाइजीरियाई संगीतकार और पत्रकार का निधन हुआ।

2018 नोबल पुरस्कार प्राप्त प्रसिद्ध त्रिनीदाद - ब्रिटिश अंग्रेजी लेखक विदियाधर सूरजपाल नायपॉल का निधन हुआ।

2019 प्रसिद्ध मैक्सिकन रोमन कैथोलिक कार्डिनल सर्जियो ओबेसो रिवेरा का निधन हुआ।

2020 ट्रिनी लोपेज, मैक्सिकन अमेरिकी गायक और गिटारवादक एवं सुमनेर रेडस्टोन, अमेरिकी अरबपति व्यवसायी का निधन हुआ।

2022 ऐनी हेचे, अमेरिकी अभिनेत्री एवं हाने मोरी, जापानी फैशन डिजाइनर का निधन हुआ।

2022 भारत के प्रधान न्यायाधीश ने 11 अगस्त को कहा कि मुफ्त की सौगातें और सामाजिक कल्याणकारी योजनाएं दो अलग-अलग चीजें हैं तथा अर्थव्यवस्था को पैसे के नुकसान एवं कल्याणकारी कदमों के बीच संतुलन कायम करना होगा। इसके साथ ही न्यायालय ने मुफ्त सौगात देने का वादा करने के लिए राजनीतिक दलों की मान्यता रद्द करने के अनुरोध वाली याचिका पर विचार करने की संभावना से भी इनकार किया। न्यायालय ने विभिन्न पक्षों को 17 अगस्त से पहले इस पहलू पर सुझाव देने को कहा है। प्रधान न्यायाधीश न्यायमूर्ति एनवी रमना एवं न्यायमूर्ति कृष्ण मुरारी की पीठ ने कहा कि चुनाव के दौरान तर्कहीन मुफ्त सौगात देने का वादा करने वाले राजनीतिक दलों की मान्यता रद्द करने का विचार अलोकतांत्रिक है। पीठ की ओर से चीफ जस्टिस रमना ने कहा, मैं किसी राजनीतिक दल का पंजीकरण रद्द करने के विषय में नहीं जाना चाहता क्योंकि यह एक अलोकतांत्रिक विचार है। आखिरकार हमारे यहां लोकतंत्र है। उन्होंने कहा कि चुनावी प्रक्रिया के दौरान तर्कहीन मुफ्त सौगात देने का वादा एक गंभीर मुद्दा है, लेकिन वह इस संबंध में वैधानिक स्थिति स्पष्ट नहीं होने पर भी विधायी क्षेत्र में अतिक्रमण नहीं करेंगे। पीठ ने कहा, आप मुझे अनिच्छुक या परंपरावादी कह सकते हैं लेकिन मैं विधायी क्षेत्र का अतिक्रमण नहीं करना चाहता, .. मैं रूढ़िवादी हूं। मैं विधायिका से जुड़े क्षेत्रों में अतिक्रमण नहीं करना चाहता। यह एक गंभीर विषय है। यह कोई आसान बात नहीं है। हमें दूसरों को भी सुनने दें। ज्ञातव्य है कि आला अदालत अधिवक्ता अश्विनी उपाध्याय द्वारा दायर एक जनहित याचिका पर सुनवाई कर रही है। इस याचिका में चुनाव के दौरान राजनीतिक दलों द्वारा मुफ्त सौगातों का वादा करने के चलन का विरोध किया गया है और निर्वाचन आयोग से उनके चुनाव चिह्नों पर रोक लगाने तथा उनका पंजीकरण रद्द करने के लिए अपनी शक्तियों का उपयोग करने का अनुरोध किया गया है।

इसी दिन इसी विषय पर दिल्ली के मुख्यमंत्री अरविंद केजरीवाल ने मुफ्त योजनाओं पर चल रही बहस का जवाब दिया और केंद्र सरकार की नीतियों पर सवाल उठाते हुए उसके खर्च पर संदेह व्यक्त करते हुए कहा कि करदाताओं का पैसा जनता के लिए है, न कि राजनेताओं द्वारा अपने दोस्तों के कर्ज को माफ करने के लिए। उन्होंने कहा, अगर इन लोगों ने अपने दोस्तों का 10 लाख करोड़ रुपये का कर्ज माफ नहीं किया होता तो केंद्र सरकार को दूध, दही पर टैक्स नहीं लगाना पड़ता या हमारे जवानों की पेंशन बंद नहीं करनी पड़ती। ये लोग अपने अमीरों का लाखों करोड़ का कर्ज माफ कर रहे है।

केजरीवाल बोले कि ये लोग (मोदी सरकार) जनता का पैसा अपने दोस्तों पर खर्च करते हैं, जबकि हम इसे वंचितों आम आदमी को देते हैं। अगर सारा सरकारी पैसा चंद लोगों पर खर्च हो जाता है, तो देश कैसे आगे बढ़ेगा। केंद्र पर निशाना साधते हुए मुख्यमंत्री ने कहा कि वे यह कहते हुए अग्निपथ योजना लाए हैं कि उनके पास पेंशन के लिए पैसे नहीं हैं। उन्होंने कहा, आजादी के बाद से ऐसा कभी नहीं हुआ कि देश के पास अपने सैनिकों को पेंशन देने के लिए पैसे नहीं बचे हैं। केंद्र का पैसा कहां गया? केंद्र सरकार राज्यों के साथ करों का एक हिस्सा साझा करती है। पहले, यह 42 प्रतिशत थी। अब इसे घटाकर 29-30 प्रतिशत कर दिया गया है। केंद्र 2014 में एकत्र किए गए करों की राशि का दोगुना-तिगुना एकत्र कर रहा है। सारा पैसा कहां जा रहा है।

उन्होंने कहा कि 2014 में केंद्र का बजट 20 लाख करोड़ रुपये था, जो अब 40 लाख करोड़ रुपये है। केजरीवाल ने आरोप लगाया, केंद्र ने सुपर अमीर लोगों, उनके दोस्तों के कर्ज माफ करने पर 10 लाख करोड़ रुपये खर्च किए हैं। अगर उन्होंने इन ऋणों को माफ नहीं किया होता, तो सरकार को लोगों के भोजन पर कर लगाने या सैनिकों की पेंशन रोकने की आवश्यकता नहीं होती।

2022 तमिलनाडु अस्पृश्यता उन्मूलन मोर्चा (टीएनयूईएफ) ने एक सर्वे में पाया कि राज्य में कई दलित पंचायत अध्यक्षों को उनके कार्यालयों में कुर्सी तक नहीं दी गई। सर्वेक्षण में पाया गया कि सर्वेक्षण में शामिल 386 पंचायतों में से 22 में दलित अध्यक्षों को कुर्सियां उपलब्ध नहीं कराई गईं। राज्य के 24 जिलों में किए गए सर्वेक्षण में पाया गया कि कई दलित पंचायत अध्यक्षों को राष्ट्रीय ध्वज फहराने तक की अनुमति नहीं है। कुछ मामलों में, पंचायत अध्यक्षों को स्थानीय निकाय कार्यालय में प्रवेश की अनुमति नहीं है और कुछ मामलों में, उन्हें दस्तावेजों का आकलन नहीं दिया गया। 11 अगस्त को चेन्नई में रिपोर्ट जारी करने के बाद मीडियाकर्मियों से बात करते हुए, सर्वेक्षण का नेतृत्व करने वाले टीएनयूईएफ के के. सैमुअल राज ने कहा, सर्वेक्षण का नतीजा चैंकाने वाला और दुखद है। पंचायत अध्यक्षों को कुर्सियों पर बैठने की भी अनुमति नहीं है और जब देश अपनी 75 वीं स्वतंत्रता का जश्न मनाने के लिए तैयार है, तो उन्हें राष्ट्रीय ध्वज फहराने की अनुमति नहीं है। ऐसी समस्या 20 पंचायतों में व्याप्त है। सैमुअल राज ने कहा कि यह देखकर दुख होता है कि तमिलनाडु में जातिगत भेदभाव प्रचलित है, एक ऐसा राज्य जो जातिगत भेदभाव के खिलाफ लड़ने वाले पेरियार की विचारधारा पर निर्भर है। सैमुअल राज ने कहा, हम सरकार से दलित पंचायत अध्यक्षों की शिकायतों के निवारण के लिए एक विशेष तंत्र बनाने की अपील करते हैं। टीएनयूईएफ नेता ने कहा कि वे सरकार को रिपोर्ट सौंपेंगे और उनसे 15 अगस्त को राष्ट्रीय ध्वज फहराने के लिए पंचायत अध्यक्षों को सम्मानित करने के लिए विशेष अधिकारियों की प्रतिनियुक्ति करने का आग्रह करेंगे।

1908 Khudiram Bose, a famous revolutionary, was hanged when he was less than nineteen years old. Kingsford, the chief provincial judge in Calcutta, was notorious for his harsh punishment of Indian revolutionaries. Kingsford was knocking Indian revolutionaries. Sensing this, the British Government transferred Judge Kingsford to Muzaffarpur. The responsibility of killing Judge Kingsford was given to two young revolutionaries – Khudiram Bose and Prafulla Chaki. Both followed Kingsford to Muzaffarpur, Bihar. Here both the revolutionaries did Reiki of Judge Kingsford. Judge Kingsford used to leave the European Club daily in a wagon. The two plan to blow up the wagon in which Judge Kingsford will be riding. On 30 April 1908, both the revolutionaries were ready to carry out their plan. A wagon pulled out of the club and the two threw the bomb at it, but the wagon was carrying two women instead of Judge Kingsford. Both died in the attack. The plan to kill Judge Kingsford fails. Both the revolutionaries escaped after the attack. Prafulla Chaki boarded a train at Samastipur, but a police sub-inspector aboard the train recognized Chaki and informed the police. At the next station, the police stood ready to catch Chaki. Chaki tried to escape, but being surrounded from all sides could not escape and shot himself. Here Khudiram Bose was arrested from Vaini Pusa Road station. The British government completed the hearing in only 8 days. The verdict came on 13 July 1908 in which Khudiram Bose was sentenced to death. An appeal was made against this decision in the Calcutta High Court, but the judge upheld the death sentence. The day of hanging was fixed - 11 August 1908. Khudiram Bose fearlessly climbed the gallows with Gita in his hand. It is said that there was no fear of hanging on his face at all. The martyrdom of Khudiram Bose, who was martyred at the age of only 18 years, 8 months and 8 days, raised a new flame of freedom among the youth.
