902 इब्राहिम द्वितीय के नेतृत्व में इफरीकियाई सेना ने टॉरमीना के बीजेंटाइन की राजधानी पर आधिपत्य कायम किया और निर्णायक मुस्लिम विजय प्राप्त की।

1498 अमेरिका खोजने वाले विश्व विख्यात और कुख्यात इतालवी नाविक तथा खोजी क्रिस्टोफर कोलंबस वेनेजुएला के इस्ला सांता में जहाज से उतर कर धरती पर आए।

1591 मुगल बादशाह अकबर महान के दरबार में प्रसिद्ध कवियों में से एक उर्फी शीराजी का निधन हुआ।

1648 स्विटजरलैंड की स्वतंत्रता को औपचारिकता दी गयी और 1 अगस्त को स्विटजरलैंड का राष्ट्रीय दिवस घोषित किया गया।

1715 ब्रिटेन में दंगा अधिनियम लागू हुआ। 12 और अधिक लोगों के किसी भी समूह को अशांति की आशंका के चलते गैरकानूनी रूप से इकट्ठा होने पर पुलिस कार्रवाई की व्यवस्था दी गई।

1732 सरकार नियंत्रित लंदन में बैंक ऑफ इंग्लैंड का उद्घाटन हुआ।

1770 कागल के युद्ध में रूसी कमांडर प्योरट रोमिंट्सव के नेतृत्व में रूसी सेना ने 150,000 की विशाल संख्या वाली तुर्क सेना को हराया इसमें हजारों लोग मारे गये।

1831 नया लंदन ब्रिज यातायात के लिए खोला गया।

1834 ब्रिटिश साम्राज्य में आधिकारिक तौर पर दासता की व्यवस्था को खत्म करने वाले गुलामी उन्मूलन अधिनियम 1833 को लागू किया गया।,

1863 सरदार मन्ना सिंह औलख जाट की बेटी और पंजाब के महाराज रणजीत सिंह की पाँचवी रानी तथा उनके सबसे छोटे बेटे दलीप सिंह की माँ जिंदाँ रानी का निधन हुआ।

1883 ब्रिटेन में अंतर्देशीय डाक सेवा शुरू की गई।

1876 कोलोराडो अमेरिका का 38वां राज्य बना।

1894 पहला चीन और जापान युद्ध प्रारंभ हुआ।

1898 व्योमिंग में ग्रैंड टेटन के पहले सफल पर्वतारोहण के सम्मान और स्मृति में अमेरिका में 1 अगस्त को राष्ट्रीय पर्वतारोहण दिवस मनाया जाता है। ग्रैंड टेटन व्योमिंग की टेटन रेंज की सबसे ऊंची चोटी है और यह सफल चढ़ाई एक टीम द्वारा पूरी की गई थी 1 अगस्त, 1898 को। सात पर्वतारोहियों द्वारा जिसका नेतृत्व नथानिएल नैट लैंगफोर्ड ने किया और इसमें टीएम बैनन, जेपी क्रैमर, जॉन शिवे, फ्रैंक स्पाल्डिंग, विलियम ओवेन और फ्रैंकलिन स्पाल्डिंग शामिल थे। इस दिन पर्वतारोही और बाहरी उत्साही लोग इस दिन का उपयोग पहाड़ों का पता लगाने, चढ़ाई अभियानों में प्रतिभाग करने या पहाड़ी क्षेत्रों के संरक्षण प्रयासों को बढ़ावा देने के लिए करते हैं। इसके बाद बॉबी मैथ्यूज और जोश मैडिगन की जोड़ी ने 1 अगस्त, 2015 को एडिरोंडैक पर्वत की आखिरी चोटी, व्हाइट फेस माउंटेन फतेह की थी।

1899 प्रमुख स्वतंत्रता सेनानी और प्रथम भारतीय प्रधानमंत्री जवाहर लाल नेहरू की पत्नी, सामाजिक - राजनैतिक कार्यकत्री कमला नेहरू का जन्म दिल्ली में हुआ।

1910 भारतीय क्रिकेट खिलाड़ी मुहम्मद निसार का जन्म हुआ।

1913 प्रसिद्ध फिल्म अभिनेता एवं निर्माता-निर्देशक भगवान दादा का जन्म अमरावती महाराष्ट्र में हुआ। 1913 में इसी दिन चंद्रकांता संतति जैसे तमाम लोकप्रिय हिंदी तिलिस्मी उपन्यास लिखने वाले लेखक बाबू देवकीनंदन खत्री का निधन हुआ।

1914 जर्मनी ने प्रथम विश्व युद्ध की शुरूआत में रूस के खिलाफ युद्ध की घोषणा की।

1916 स्वतंत्रता सेनानी तथा आयरन लेडी कही गइ्र श्रीमती एनी बेसेंट ने बाल गंगाधर तिलक के सहयोग से होम रूल लीग के अध्यक्ष दादाभाई नौरोजी के साथ मिलकर होम रूल लीग आंदोलन की शुरूआत की।

1920 महाराष्ट्र के प्रमुख दलित अधिकारवादी सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता, विद्वान, विचारक, लेखक तुकाराम अन्नाभाऊ साठे का जन्म हुआ।

1920 अंग्रेज शासकों की बढ़ती ज्यादतियों का विरोध करने के लिए महात्मा गांधी ने एक अगस्त को असहयोग आंदोलन की शुरुआत की। आंदोलन के दौरान विद्यार्थियों ने सरकारी स्कूलों और कॉलेजों में जाना छोड़ दिया। वकीलों ने अदालत में जाने से मना कर दिया। कई कस्बों, क्षेत्रों और नगरों में श्रमिक हड़ताल पर चले गए। सरकारी आंकड़ों के मुताबिक 1921 में 396 हड़तालें हुई जिनमें छह लाख श्रमिक शामिल थे और इससे 70 लाख कार्यदिवसों का नुकसान हुआ। शहरों से लेकर गांव देहात में इस आंदोलन का असर दिखाई देने लगा और सन 1857 के स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के बाद असहयोग आंदोलन से पहली बार अंग्रेजी राज की नींव हिल गई थी। फरवरी 1922 में किसानों के एक समूह ने संयुक्त प्रांत के गोरखपुर जिले के चैरी-चैरा पुरवा में एक पुलिस स्टेशन पर आक्रमण कर उसमें आग लगा दी। हिंसा की इस घटना के बाद गांधी जी ने यह आंदोलन तत्काल वापस ले लिया। महात्मा गांधी ने 1920 में ब्रिटिश सरकार द्वारा प्रदत्त केसर ए हिंद पुरस्कार लौटा दिया। यहां याद रखा जाना चाहिए कि 21वीं सदी में आज के दौर के सबसे बड़े देशभक्त बन रहे और पुराने लोगों की बुराइयां कर रहे सत्ताधारी वर्ग हिंदू महासभा, राष्ट्रीय स्वयं सेवक संघ और उनके जैसे तमाम लोग आजादी के आंदोलन में ब्रिटिश गुलामी के खिलाफ नहीं थे। कई मौकों पर उन्होंने अंग्रेजों का सहयोग किया। 1942 के अंग्रेजों भारत छोड़ो आंदोलन का भी आरएसएस के नेताओं ने सहयोग-समर्थन नहीं किया। विनायक दामोदर सावरकर ने तो आंदोलन का विरोध किया था।

1920 सामंती हिंदुत्ववादी विद्वान, गणितज्ञ, दार्शनिक और भारतीय राष्ट्रवादी लोकमान्य बाल गंगाधर तिलक का निधन हुआ।

1921 विख्यात अमेरिकी टेनिस खिलाड़ी जैक क्रेमर का जन्म हुआ।

1924 वेस्ट इंडीज के प्रसिद्ध क्रिकेटर फ्रैंक वोरेल का जन्म हुआ। 1924 में इसी दिन सऊदी अरब के राजा शाह अब्दुल्ला का जन्म हुआ।

1933 दुखांत फिल्मों में गंभीर अभिनय के कारण ट्रेजेडी क्वीन कहलाई गई बहुचर्चित, बहुप्रतिष्ठित, खूबसूरत, बोल्ड हिंदी चलचित्र अभिनेत्री, गायिका, शायरा एवं माॅडल मीना कुमारी का जन्म दादर, बंबई में हुआ। इनका वास्तविक नाम महजबीं बानो था।

1936 जर्मन तानाशाह एडॉल्फ हिटलर ने बर्लिन में हुये ओलंपिक खेल आयोजन समारोह की अध्यक्षता की।

1939 प्रसिद्ध हिंदी साहित्यकार गोविंद मिश्र का जन्म अटर्रा, बांदा में हुआ। हिंदी लेखन में उल्लेखनीय योगदान के लिए इन्हें व्यास सम्मान, सरस्वती सम्मान और साहित्य अकादमी पुरस्कार मिला।

1942 संयुक्त अरब अमीरात के प्रमुख कारोबारी, अनेक अरबों रुपये कीमत की कंपनियों के मालिक बावागुथू रघुराम शेट्टी का जन्म उडूपी, कर्नाटक में हुआ।

1947 भारत और पाकिस्तान के बीच शक्तियों का बंटवारा हुआ और लार्ड माउंटबेटन भारत के गवर्नर जनरल और मोहम्मद अली जिन्ना पाकिस्तान के गवर्नर जनरल बने।

1952 प्रथम प्रधानमंत्री पंडित जवाहरलाल नेहरू ने सफदरजंग दिल्ली में राष्ट्रीयकृत एयरवेज का उद्घाटन किया।

1953 क्यूबा में समाजवादी क्रांतिकारी नेता फिदेल कास्त्रो को गिरफ्तार किया गया। 1953 में इसी दिन भारत में सभी विमानन कंपनियों (एयरलाइंस) का राष्ट्रीयकरण किया गया।

1955 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय क्रिकेटर अरुण लाल का जन्म हुआ था।

1955 पंजाबियों के प्रमुख धार्मिक संगठन राधा स्वामी ब्यास के मुखिया गुरिंदर सिंह ढिल्लों का जन्म मोगा, पंजाब में हुआ।

1957 नेशनल बुक ट्रस्ट की स्थापना हुई।

1958 आचार्य विनोबा भावे को रैमन मैगसेसे पुरस्कार दिया गया।

1960 पाकिस्तान की राजधानी कराची से बदलकर इस्लामाबाद की गई।

1961 भारतीय जनता पार्टी के नेता, विधायक और हरियाणा सरकार में मंत्री ओम प्रकाश धनकड़ का जन्म झज्जर में हुआ।

1964 भारतीय जनता पार्टी के पश्चिम बंगाल में नेता और राज्य सभा सदस्य दिलीप घोष का जन्म हुआ।

1965 ब्रिटेन में टेलीविजन पर सिगरेट विज्ञापन दिखाया जाना प्रतिबंधित किया गया।

1971 चंद्र यान पर सवार अमेरिकी अंतरिक्ष यात्री जेम्स इरविन और डेविड स्कॉटकेम जेनेसिस रॉक चट्टान पर पहुंचे। यह चट्टान लगभग 4,500 मिलियन वर्ष पुराना माना गया है।

1972 प्रसिद्ध टेनिस खिलाड़ी मार्टिन डैम का जन्म हुआ।

1975 दुर्बा बनर्जी भारत की पहली और कमर्शियल महिला पायलट बनीं।

1984 जानी मानी, खूबसूरत, बोल्ड थिएटर कलाकार, टेलीविजन तथा फिल्म अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल ईरा दुबे का जन्म दिल्ली में हुआ।

1987 हिंदी, तमिल, तेलुगू आदि भाषाओं की चर्चित, बोल्ड, खूबसूरत अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल तापसी पन्नू का जन्म दिल्ली में हुआ।

1992 प्रधानमंत्री पीवी नरसिंह राव ने विजाग स्टील प्लांट राष्ट्र को समर्पित किया। इसी दिन जानी मानी बोल्ड हिंदी एवं मराठी फिल्म तथा टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री और माॅडल मृणाल ठाकुर का जन्म नागपुर में हुआ।

1995 हब्बल दूरबीन ने शनि के एक और चन्द्रमा की खोज की।

1997 द नेशनल कैंसर इंस्टीट्यूट द्वारा प्रकाशित अध्ययन के अनुसार, 1950 के दशक के दौरान परमाणु परीक्षण थायराइड कैंसर का मूल कारण हो सकता है और इसके परिणामस्वरूप 10,000 से 75,000 लोगों की मौत हुई होगी। परमाणु विकिरण थायरॉइड कैंसर का विकास कर सकते हैं।

1999 प्रख्यात बांग्ला तथा अंग्रेजी लेखक और विद्वान नीरद चंद्र चौधरी का निधन हुआ।

2000 ईरान में महिलाओं को भी इमाम बनने की सुविधा प्रदान की। 2000 में इसी दिन ज्ञानपीठ पुरस्कार से सम्मानित प्रसिद्ध शायर अली सरदार जाफरी का निधन हुआ।

2001 भारतीय संविधान सभा की एकमात्र मुस्लिम महिला सदस्य बेगम कुदसिया ऐजाज रसूल का इंतकाल लखनऊ में हुआ।

2004 श्रीलंका ने प्रेमदासा स्टेडियम में आयोजित फाइनल मैच में भारत को 25 रनों से हराकर एशिया कप जीत लिया। सनत जयसूर्या मैन आफ द सिरीज बने।

2005 सऊदी अरब के शाह फहद बिन अब्दुल अजीज का निधन हुआ और शाह के भाई अब्दुल्ला बिन अब्दुल अजीज देश के नये शाह नियुक्त हुए।

2006 जापान ने दुनिया की पहली भूकंप पूर्व चेतावनी सेवा शुरू की। 2006 में इसी दिन क्यूबा के नेता फिदेल कास्त्रो ने अपनी सारी शक्तियां अपने भाई राउल को दीं। इसी दिन ब्रिटेन और अमेरिका के कैलिफोर्निया राज्य के बीच पर्यावरण संरक्षण पर ब्रिटिश प्रधानमंत्री टोनी ब्लेयर और कैलिफोर्निया के गवर्नर अर्नोल्ड श्वार्जनेगर के बीच सहमति के बाद समझौते पर हस्ताक्षर हुए।

2007 वियतनाम की राजधानी हनोई में आयोजित अंतर्राष्ट्रीय गणित ओलंपियाड में भारतीय दल के छह सदस्यों ने तीन रजत पदक जीते।

2008 अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय परमाणु ऊर्जा एजेंसी आईएइए के बोर्ड ने भारत के विशेष निगरानी समझौते को हरी झंडी दी। इसी दिन 2008 में जुझारू वामपंथी नेता हरकिशन सिंह सुरजीत का निधन दिल्ली के निकट नौएडा में हुआ। और इसी दिन ब्राजील के राष्ट्रपति, लुइस इनासियो लूला डी सिल्वा ने अमेजॅन जंगल की सुरक्षा के लिए फंड की घोषणा की यह जंगलों को काटने और जलवायु परिवर्तन से लड़ने के विकल्पों पर काम करने के लिए था। यह फंड अंतरराष्ट्रीय दान पर निर्भर है।

2010 अनुषा रिजवी द्वारा निर्देशित किसानों की आत्महत्या और मीडिया तथा राजनीतिक ड्रामे पर आधारित आमिर खान की फिल्म पीपली लाइव को 31वें डरबन अंतरराष्ट्रीय फिल्मोत्सव में सर्वश्रेष्ठ फीचर फिल्म का पुरस्कार प्रदान किया गया।

2011 अंतरराष्ट्रीय समाचार एजेंसी रायटर की रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, कंप्यूटर असेंबलर कंपनी फॉक्सकॉन टेक्नोलॉजी का ताइवान स्थित अपने मुख्यालय में अगले तीन वर्षों में एक मिलियन रोबोट नियुक्त करने की योजना है।

2012 फिलीपींस, ताईवान तथा चीन में साओला तूफान में 82 लोगों की मौत तथा डेढ लाख लोग बेघर हुए।

2014 लाइबेरिया और सिएरा लियोन में सरकारों ने इबोला वायरस का प्रसार रोकने, प्रभाव कम करने की बात कहते हुए आपातकाल लगाया। स्कूल बंद किये और बाजारों, बस्तियों में सैनिक तैनात किये।

2018 राष्ट्रपति रामनाथ कोविंद ने संसद भवन में आयोजित विशेष समारोह में वर्ष 2013 से 2017 के लिए उत्कृष्ट सांसद पुरस्कार प्रदान किए। 2013 के लिए नजमा हेबतुल्ला, 2014 के लिए हुक्मदेव नारायण यादव, 2015 के लिए गुलाम नबी आजाद, 2016 के लिए दिनेश त्रिवेदी और 2017 के लिए भर्तृहरि मेहताब को यह पुरस्कार दिए गए। इसी दिन असम और मेघालय के राज्यपाल रहे राजनेता भीष्म नारायण सिंह का देहांत हुआ।

National Mountaineering Day is celebrated on August 1 in the US to honor and commemorate the first successful ascent of Grand Teton in Wyoming in 1898. Grand Teton is the highest peak in Wyoming's Teton Range and was successfully climbed by a team on August 1, 1898. by seven climbers led by Nathaniel Nate Langford and consisting of TM Bannon, JP Kramer, John Sheeve, Frank Spalding, William Owen, and Franklin Spalding. The day is used by climbers and outdoor enthusiasts to explore mountains, participate in climbing expeditions or promote conservation efforts in mountainous areas. Bobby Mathews and Josh Madigan then climbed White Face Mountain, the last peak in the Adirondack Mountains, on August 1, 2015.

1899 Kamala Nehru, socio-political activist, prominent freedom fighter and wife of first Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, was born in Delhi.

1910 Muhammad Nisar, Indian cricketer, was born.

1913 Bhagwan Dada, famous film actor and producer-director, was born in Amravati, Maharashtra. On this day in 1913, Babu Devkinandan Khatri, the author of many popular Hindi Tilismi novels like Chandrakanta Santati, passed away.

1914 Germany declares war on Russia, beginning World War I.

1916 Freedom fighter and Iron Lady Mrs. Annie Besant started the Home Rule League movement with the help of Bal Gangadhar Tilak along with the President of the Home Rule League, Dadabhai Naoroji.

1920 Tukaram Annabhau Sathe, Maharashtra's leading Dalit rights activist, scholar, thinker, writer, was born.

1920 Mahatma Gandhi started the Non-Cooperation Movement on August 1 to protest against the increasing excesses of the British rulers. During the agitation, students stopped attending government schools and colleges. The lawyers denied to go to the court. Workers went on strike in many towns, regions and cities. According to official statistics, there were 396 strikes in 1921, involving six lakh workers and causing a loss of seven million working days. The effect of this movement was visible from the cities to the rural countryside and after the freedom struggle of 1857, the foundation of the British rule was shaken for the first time by the non-cooperation movement. In February 1922, a group of peasants attacked and set fire to a police station at Chari-Chara Purva in the Gorakhpur district of the United Provinces. After this incident of violence, Gandhiji immediately called off the movement. Mahatma Gandhi returned the Kesar-e-Hind award given by the British Government in 1920.
