1762 पीटर द्वितीय की हत्या के बाद कैथरीन द्वितीय रूस की साम्राज्ञी बनी। कहा जाता है कि कैथरीन ने ही अपने पति की हत्या करवाई और अप्रत्यक्ष रूप से अपने गुर्गों के माध्यम से रूस पर राज्य किया और खूब अय्याशी की।

1790 प्रसिद्ध स्कॉटिश नीतिवेत्ता, दार्शनिक और राजनैतिक अर्थशास्त्री, सिद्धांतकार एडम स्मिथ का निधन हुआ। उनका एक प्रसिद्ध कथन है- कोई भी समाज निश्चित रूप से समृद्ध और सुखी नहीं हो सकता है, जिसके सदस्यों का बड़ा हिस्सा गरीब और दुखी है। 9 मार्च 1776 को प्रकाशित उनकी किताब एन इन्क्वायरी इन्टो द नेचर एंड कॉज ऑफ द वेल्थ ऑफ नेशंस (राष्ट्रों के धन की प्रकृति और कारणों की जांच, जिसे आम तौर पर इसके संक्षिप्त शीर्षक द वेल्थ ऑफ नेशंस या हिंदी में राष्ट्रों की संपदा द्वारा संदर्भित किया जाता है, स्कॉटिश अर्थशास्त्री और नैतिक दार्शनिक एडम स्मिथ की महान कृति है।) ने यूरोप को झकझोरा, सोचने को मजबूर किया। उनका जोर इस बात पर भी था कि मजदूरों के भले के बिना मालिकों का भी भला अधिक नहीं हो सकता।

1945 द्वितीय विश्व युद्ध के बाद जर्मनी के साथ क्या किया जाए यह तय करने के लिए सोवियत नेता जोसेफ स्टालिन, ब्रिटिश प्रधानमंत्री विंस्टन चर्चिल और अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति हैरी एस. ट्रूमैन ने पोप्सडैम में बैठक की।

1947 भारतीय यात्री जहाज रामदास बंबई के पास तूफान में फंसकर डूब गया। 625 लोगों की मौत हो गई।

1948 भारत में महिलाओं को भारतीय प्रशासनिक सेवा और भारतीय पुलिस सेवा सहित सभी तरह की नागरिक सेवाओं में पात्र घोषित किया गया।

1950 भारत के पठानकोट, पंजाब में भारत का पहला विमान दुर्घटनाग्रस्त हुआ।

1960 सीमात्ती टेक्सटाइल की मालकिन, बड़ी कारोबारी और फैशन डिजायन बीना कानन का जन्म कोट्टायम में हुआ।

1968 इराक में अहमद हसन अलबक्र के नेतृत्व में विद्रोह करके बास पार्टी ने सत्ता पर कब्जा कर लिया।

1969 जाने माने भोजपुरी, बाॅलीवुड फिल्म अभिनेता और भाजपा नेता, सांसद रवि किशन शुक्ला का जन्म जिला जौनपुर, उत्तर प्रदेश में हुआ। 

1972 दो महिलाओं ने पहली बार अमेरिकी खुफिया एजेंसी एफबीआई में बतौर एजेंट ट्रेनिंग शुरू की। इसी दिन गुजरात के प्रसिद्ध राजनीतिज्ञ और ऑल इंडिया किसान सभा के नेता इंदुलाल याज्ञिक का निधन हुआ।

1973 अफगानिस्तान के अंतिम राजा मोहम्मद जहीर शाह को उनके चचेरे भाई मोहम्मद दाउद खान ने तख्तापलट कर सत्ता पर कब्जा कर लिया। अदील हाशमी ने बेटर स्पीकर प्रोग्राम डिजाइन करने से पहले 20 वर्षों तक अभिनय और बोलना सिखाया है। बेटरस्पीकर.नेट वेबसाइट के संचालक आदिल जन्म पाकिस्तान के लाहौर में 17 जुलाई 1973 को हुआ।

1974 लंदन टॉवर में हुए बम धमाके से 41 लोग घायल हो गए।

1976 21वें आधुनिक ओलंपिक खेलों का आयोजन कनाडा के मांट्रियल में शुरू हुआ।

1979 प्रख्यात भारतीय शास्त्रीय संगीतकार लालमणि मिश्र का निधन हुआ।

1980 जेंको सुजुकी जापान के प्रधानमंत्री बने।

1981 इजरायल ने लेबनान की राजधानी बेरूत में अल-फतह मुख्यालय को नष्ट किया।

1982 जाने माने भारतीय - अमेरिकी इंटरनेट उद्यमी, विज्ञापन कंपनियां चलाने वाले गुरबक्श सिंह चहल का जन्म तरन तारन, पंजाब में हुआ।

1987 ईरान और फ्रांस के बीच राजनयिक संबंध समाप्त हुए।

1989 जानी मानी फिल्म अभिनेत्री और माॅडल, लेखिका और काॅमेडियन मल्लिका दुआ का जन्म हुआ। मल्लिका विख्यात टेलीविजन पत्रकार स्व. विनोदी दुआ की बेटी हैं।

1992 जाने माने भारतीय बैडमिंटन खिलाड़ी प्रनाॅय हसीना सुनील कुमार का जन्म हुआ। 1992 में इसी दिन गुजरे जमाने की प्रसिद्ध भारतीय फिल्म अभिनेत्री, गायिका और फिल्म निर्मात्री कानन देवी का निधन हुआ।

1994 जाने माने उद्योगपति कुमार मंगलम बिरला की बेटी जानी मानी गायिका और कारोबारी अनन्या बिरला का जन्म हुआ। 1994 में इसी दिन धूमकेतू शुमेकर लेवी-9 का पहला टुकड़ा बृहस्पति गृह से टकराया।

1995 अमेरिकी शेयर बाजार नास्डैक कम्पोजिट इंडेक्स पहली बार 1,000 अंक से ऊपर बंद हुआ। इसी दिन फोर्ब्स पत्रिका ने माइक्रोसॉफ्ट के संस्थापक बिल गेट्स को दुनिया का सबसे अमीर घोषित किया।

1996 तमिलनाडु के मुख्यमंत्री एम. करुणानिधि ने मद्रास का नाम बदलकर चेन्नई कर दिया।

1998 जानी मानी कन्नड़, दक्षिण भारतीय फिल्म अभिनेत्री तथा माॅडल संयुक्ता हेगड़े का जन्म बंगलौर में हुआ।

1998 120 से ज्यादा देशों ने मिलकर अंतरराष्ट्रीय अपराध न्यायालय की स्थापना की थी। इस कोर्ट को बनाने का मकसद विभिन्न देशों की सरकारों के गंभीर अपराधों के मामलों की सुनवाई करना है। 1 जुलाई 2002 से इस कोर्ट ने अपना कामकाज शुरू किया था। भारत रोम में हुई उस संधि से अलग है, जिसमें शामिल देशों ने इस कोर्ट की स्थापना की थी। 1945 में संयुक्त राष्ट्र के बनने के बाद से ही अंतरराष्ट्रीय अपराध न्यायालय बनाने की कोशिश हो रही थी। 9 दिसंबर 1948 को संयुक्त राष्ट्र ने इस बारे में एक रेजोल्यूशन पास किया। इसमें कहा गया कि इतिहास में नरसंहार जैसी क्रूर घटनाओं ने मानवता का बहुत नुकसान किया है। मानव जाति को इस तरह के जघन्य संकट से मुक्त करने के लिए अंतरराष्ट्रीय सहयोग जरूरी है। रेजोल्यूशन में नरसंहार को अंतरराष्ट्रीय अपराध माना गया। संयुक्त राष्ट्र ने एक इंटरनेशनल कोर्ट के गठन के लिए इंटरनेशनल लॉ कमीशन से भी सुझाव मांगा। कमीशन के सुझावों के आधार पर एक समिति बनाई गई। इस कमेटी का काम इंटरनेशनल कोर्ट की स्थापना के बावत अध्ययन करना था। 1953 में इस कमेटी ने एक ड्राफ्ट तैयार किया। 1993 में युगोस्लाविया में भीषण गृह युद्ध छिड़ गया। इस युद्ध में जातीय हिंसा में हजारों लोगों का नरसंहार हुआ। इसके बाद एक बार फिर इंटरनेशनल क्रिमिनल कोर्ट के गठन की मांग बढ़ने लगी। 1994 में इंटरनेशनल लॉ कमीशन ने इंटरनेशनल क्रिमिनल कोर्ट के गठन संबंधी ड्राफ्ट पर काम पूरा किया। इस ड्राफ्ट को संयुक्त राष्ट्र जनरल असेंबली के सामने रखा गया। ड्राफ्ट में सुधार होते रहे और अप्रैल 1998 में ड्राफ्ट पूरी तरह बनकर तैयार हो गया। संयुक्त राष्ट्र ने रोम में 15 जून से 17 जुलाई तक इस ड्राफ्ट को कानून का रूप देने के लिए एक कॉन्फ्रेंस बुलाई। 17 जुलाई 1998 को 100 से भी ज्यादा देशों ने इस ड्राफ्ट पर अपनी सहमति जताते हुए इसे कानून का रूप दे दिया और इसी के तहत इंटरनेशनल क्रिमिनल कोर्ट की स्थापना हुई। 2006 में अंतरराष्ट्रीय अपराध न्यायालय ने अपने पहले मामले पर सुनवाई शुरू की। ये मामला कांगो के मिलिट्री कमांडर थॉमस लुबांगा से जुड़ा था, जिन पर आरोप था कि उन्होंने सेना में बच्चों को भर्ती किया। लुबांगा ने युद्ध में उनका इस्तेमाल किया। 2009 में इस मामले में लुबांगा पर ट्रायल शुरू हुआ। 2012 तक इस मामले की सुनवाई चली। मार्च 2012 में कोर्ट ने लुबांगा को इस अपराध का दोषी पाते हुए उन्हें 14 साल की सजा सुनाई। कोर्ट का नाम इंटरनेशनल कोर्ट आॅफ जस्टिस है और यह नीदरलैंड के हेग शहर में है। इसी उपलक्ष्य में दुनिया भर में 17 जुलाई को अंतरराष्ट्रीय न्याय दिवस मनाया जाता है। विश्व अंतर्राष्ट्रीय न्याय दिवस, जिसे अंतर्राष्ट्रीय आपराधिक न्याय दिवस या अंतर्राष्ट्रीय न्याय दिवस भी कहा जाता है, अंतर्राष्ट्रीय आपराधिक न्याय की उभरती प्रणाली को मान्यता देने के प्रयास के तहत 17 जुलाई को दुनिया भर में मनाया जाने वाला एक अंतर्राष्ट्रीय दिवस है। इस दिवस पर सभी को न्याय सुलभ हो, इस पर भी जोर दिया जाता है।

2002 रूस की स्वेतलाना फीफाप्रोवा ने पोल वाल्ट स्पर्धा में नया यूरोपीय रिकार्ड कायम किया।

2003 उत्तर पूर्व कांगो में जातीय हिंसा में 54 लोग मारे गये।

2005 भारतीय रिजर्व बैंक के 14वें गवर्नर आईजी पटेल का निधन हुआ।

2006 कैप कनैवरल (फ्लोरिडा) के स्पेस सेंटर में अपनी 13 दिन की अंतरिक्ष यात्रा पूरी कर डिस्कवरी अंतरिक्ष यान पृथ्वी पर सकुशल उतरा।

2008 अफगानिस्तान में सेनाओं ने पाकिस्तान में छिपे आतंकियों पर मिसाइलों व हेलीकॉप्टरों से हमला किया।

2012 संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका की सुनीता विलियम्स, रूस की यूरी मालेनचेंको और जापान की अकी होशाइड ने तीन महीने के लंबे मिशन के लिए अंतर्राष्ट्रीय अंतरिक्ष स्टेशन से अंतरिक्ष के लिए प्रस्थान किया। 

2013 चीन के सिचुआन प्रांत में बाढ़ से 58 से अधिक लोगों की मौत हुई और भारी नुकसान हुआ। 2013 में इसी दिन प्रसिद्ध भारतीय इतिहासकार बरुन डे का निधन हुआ।

2014 मलेशिया एयरलाइंस के विमान-17 के दुर्घटनाग्रस्त होने से 283 यात्री और चालक दल के 15 सदस्यों की मौत हो गयी।

2018 प्रसिद्ध बाॅलीवुड फिल्म अभिनेत्री रीता भादुड़ी का निधन हुआ।

In 1998, more than 120 countries together established the International Criminal Court. The purpose of making this court is to hear the cases of serious crimes of the governments of different countries. This court started its functioning from 1st July, 2002. India is different from the treaty in Rome, in which the participating countries established this court. Ever since the formation of the United Nations in 1945, efforts were being made to create an International Criminal Court. On 9 December 1948, the United Nations passed a resolution in this regard. It said that brutal incidents like genocide in history have done a lot of harm to humanity. International cooperation is necessary to free mankind from such heinous crisis. Genocide was considered an international crime in the resolution. The United Nations also sought suggestions from the International Law Commission for the formation of an International Court. Based on the recommendations of the commission, a committee was formed. The work of this committee was to study regarding the establishment of the International Court. In 1953, this committee prepared a draft. In 1993, a fierce civil war broke out in Yugoslavia. Thousands of people were massacred in ethnic violence in this war. After this, once again the demand for the formation of the International Criminal Court started increasing. In 1994, the International Law Commission completed work on the draft constitution of the International Criminal Court. This draft was placed before the United Nations General Assembly. Improvements were made to the draft and in April 1998 the draft was completed. The United Nations called a conference in Rome from 15 June to 17 July to give this draft the form of law. On July 17, 1998, more than 100 countries gave their consent to this draft and gave it the form of law and under this the International Criminal Court was established. In 2006, the International Criminal Court began hearing its first case. The case was related to Congolese military commander Thomas Lubanga, who was accused of recruiting children into the army. Lubanga used them in battle. In 2009, the trial on Lubanga started in this case. The hearing of the case went on till 2012. In March 2012, a court found Lubanga guilty of the crime and sentenced him to 14 years in prison. The name of the court is International Court of Justice and it is located in the city of Hague, Netherlands. On this occasion, International Justice Day is celebrated on 17th July all over the world. World Day for International Justice, also known as International Day of Criminal Justice or International Day of Justice, is an international day observed around the world on 17 July in an effort to recognize the emerging system of international criminal justice. It is also emphasized that justice should be accessible to all on this day.
