1494 आरागॉन के फर्डिनेंड द्वितीय और पुर्तगाल के जॉन द्वितीय ने टोर्टेसिलस समझौते पर हस्ताक्षर किए, जिसके तहत अमेरिका और अफ्रीका को हिस्सों में विभाजित किया गया।

1539 बक्सर के पास चौसा की लड़ाई में अफगान शासक शेरशाह सूरी ने मुगल बादशाह हुमायूँ को हराया।

1692 कैरिबियाई देश जमैका के पोर्ट राॅयल में आये भूकंप से तीन हजार लोगों की मौत हो गई।

1780 कैथोलिक इसाई विरोधी दंगा लंदन में शुरू हुआ जिसमें करीब 100 लोगों की मौत हो गई।

1810 पत्रकार मारियानो मोरेनो ने अर्जेंटीना का पहला अखबार गजेटा डी ब्यूनस आयर्स प्रकाशित किया।

1862 संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका तथा ब्रिटेन दास व्यापार समाप्त करने को सहमत हुए।

1863 फ्रांसीसी सेना ने मेक्सिको शहर पर कब्जा किया।

1864 अब्राहम लिंकन राष्ट्रपति के लिए दूसरी बार रिपब्लिकन पार्टी की ओर से उम्मीदवार बनाये गये।

1893 महात्मा गांधी ने दक्षिण अफ्रीका में प्रथम बार सविनय अवज्ञा का प्रयोग किया।

1914 प्रसिद्ध फिल्म निर्देशक, पटकथा लेखक और हिंदी, अंग्रेजी और उर्दू लेखक, दूरदर्शन के लोकप्रिय धारावाहिक महाभारत के संवाद लेखक ख्वाजा अहमद अब्बास का जन्म पानीपत में हुआ

1935 श्यामा के नाम से सुपरिचित बरसात की रात, आरपार जैसी तमाम लोकप्रिय फिल्मों की अभिनेत्री, चरित्र अभिनेत्री, बंबई फिल्म जगत में 1945 से 1989 तक काम करने वाली खुर्शीद अख्तर का जन्म लाहौर, पाकिस्तान में हुआ।

1935 विख्यात अमेरिकी इलैक्ट्रिकल इंजीनियर, सूचना सिद्धांतकार, उद्यमी और बहुप्रतिभावान थोमस कैलाथ का जन्म पुणे में हुआ। भारत सरकार ने इन्हें पद्मभूषण सम्मान प्रदान किया।

1939 जार्ज षष्टम तथा एलिजाबेथ ब्रिटेन के पहले राजा और रानी बने जिन्होंने अमेरिका का दौरा किया।

1948 वामपंथियों ने पूरी तरह से चेकोस्लोवाकिया पर कब्जा कर लिया।

1954 प्रारंभिक कंप्यूटर वैज्ञानिक एलन ट्यूरिंग ने आत्महत्या की। इसी दिन तमिलनाडु की प्रमुख महिला राजनेत्री जयंति नटराजन का जन्म हुआ।

1954 जाने माने फिल्म और टेलीविजन धारावाहिक हास्य अभिनेता और थिएटर कलाकार टिक्कू तलसानिया का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1959 आज के दौर के एक भारतीय अर्थशास्त्री अरविंद सुब्रमण्यम का जन्म मद्रास में हुआ।

1995 नार्मन थैगार्ड अंतरिक्ष की कक्षा में सबसे लम्बे समय तक रहने वाले अमेरिकी अंतरिक्ष यात्री बने। 1995 में इसी दिन बोइंग 777 ने अमेरिकी एयरलाइंस में अपनी पहली व्यावसायिक उड़ान शुरू की। बोइंग 777 दुनिया का सबसे बड़ा ट्विनजेट एयरोप्लेन है। यह लंबी दूरी का एक बड़ा विमान है जिसका परिचालन दायरा लगभग 20,000 किमी है।

1998 स्पेन के कार्लोस मोया ने फ्रेंच ओपन प्रतियोगिता का पुरुष एकल खिताब जीता।

1999 श्रीलंका में प्रचलित आव्रजन नियम निरस्त किए गए। इसी दिन इंडोनेशिया में 1955 के बाद पहली बार लोकतांत्रिक चुनाव 1999 में हुआ।

2000 एक अमेरिकी अदालत ने माइक्रोसॉफ्ट कंपनी को दो भागों में बांटने का निर्देश दिया।

2001 टोनी ब्लेयर की लेबर पार्टी ने ब्रिटेन के आम चुनाव में भारी बहुमत से जीत विजय प्राप्त की।

2002 भारत के पांचवें उपराष्ट्रपति हुए बसप्पा दानप्पा जत्ती का निधन हुआ।

2004 इस्रायली मंत्रिमंडल ने गाजा क्षेत्र से बस्तियाँ हटाने सम्बन्धी प्रस्ताव को मंजूरी दी।

2006 भारत ने नेपाल को आर्थिक पुनर्निर्माण के लिए एक अरब रुपये देने का निर्णय लिया।

2007 अमेरिका ने सऊदी अरब के राजदूत रहे प्रिंस बांदरे बिन सुल्तान के हथियारों की दलाली में करोड़ों पाउंड के घोटाले का पर्दाफाश किया।

2008 उत्तर प्रदेश सरकार ने रसोई गैस पर लगने वाले 4 फीसदी वैट को पूरी तरह से समाप्त किया। इसी दिन अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति जार्ज बुश ने स्टेम सेल के अनुसंधान को मंजूरी देने के विरुद्ध दूसरी बार वीटो शक्ति का प्रयोग किया। 2008 में इसी दिन प्रसिद्ध भारतीय भौतिक विज्ञानी और चेन्नई में गणितीय विज्ञान संस्थान के संस्थापक अल्लादी रामकृष्णन का निधन हुआ।

2013 चीन के शियामेन में एक बस में आग लगने से 42 लोगों की मौत हो गयी और 30 लोग घायल हुए। 2013 में इसी दिन भारत के हिमाचल प्रदेश में एक बस के पहाड़ी सड़क से नीचे गिर जाने से 18 लोगों की मौत हुई और 14 घायल हुए।

2014 विख्यात टेनिस खिलाड़ी मारिया शारापोवा ने महिलाओं का टेनिस का फ्रेंच ओपन जीता।

2016 तुर्की के वाणिज्यिक नगर इस्तांबुल के केंद्रीय पुलिस बल पर हुए कार बम हमले में 11 लोग मारे गए।

2019 वैश्विक स्तर पर संयुक्त राष्ट्र संघ के निर्देशन में पहली बार विश्व खाद्य सुरक्षा दिवस मनाया गया। इस महत्वपूर्ण दिवस को मनाने का निर्णय 20 दिसंबर 2018 की संयुक्त राष्ट्र महासभा की बैठक में लिया गया। इसका उद्देश्य खाद्य पदार्थों की सुरक्षा, गुणवत्ता और उसके विविध आयामों के प्रति जनजागरूकता फैलाना, सरकारों, कंपनियों, संस्थाओं को प्रेरित-प्रोत्साहित करना है।
