1674 जर्मन संसद ने फ्रांस के खिलाफ युद्ध की घोषणा की।

1737 इंग्लैंड में शौकिया खगोल विज्ञानी जॉन बेविज ने रॉयल ग्रीनविच वेधशाला में शुक्र ग्रह को बुध ग्रह के सामने से गुजरता देखा।

1883 मनुवादी, सामंती वर्ण, जातीय और धार्मिक भेदभाव, नफरत के पक्षपोषक, भारत - पाक विभाजन यानी द्विराष्ट्रवाद के सिद्धांतकार, युवावस्था में स्वतंत्रता सेनानी और बाद में अंग्रेजों के सहयोगी विनायक दामोदर सावरकर का जन्म भागुर, महाराष्ट्र में हुआ।

1903 महाराष्ट्रियन कराडे ब्राह्मण परिवार में शांतनुराव लक्ष्मणराव किर्लोस्कर का जन्म हुआ। किर्लोस्कर उद्योग-व्यापार समूह के विस्तार में इन्होंने महत्वूपर्ण योगदान दिया।

1908 विख्यात ब्रिटिश जासूसी उपन्यासकार, कथाकार, जासूसी उपन्यास जेम्स बॉन्ड के लेखक इयान फ्लेमिंग का जन्म हुआ।

1914 ब्रिटिश वायुसेना के चर्चित, फ्लांग ऐस कहे गये ग्रुप कैप्टन विल्फ्रिड जाॅर्ज गेराल्ड डंकन स्मिथ का जन्म मद्रास में हुआ।

1918 अमेरिका की यूनाइटेड स्टेट्स आर्मी एयर फोर्सेस मिलिट्री में इंटेलीजेंस कमांडर, प्रमुख अमेरिकी जासूस जाॅह्न मोरिसन बिर्च का जन्म लंडौर, मसूरी (देहरादून) में हुआ।

1921 उत्तर प्रदेश के वर्तमान मुख्यमंत्री अजय सिंह बिष्ट यानी योगी आदित्य नाथ के गुरु, राजनीतिज्ञ और गोरखपीठ गोरखपुर के महंत किरपाल सिंह बिष्ट यानी महंत अवैद्यनाथ का जन्म पौड़ी गढ़वाल में हुआ।

1923 दक्षिण भारत के लोकप्रिय अभिनेता और बाद में चर्चित नेता बने नंदमुरि तारक रामाराव का जन्म हुआ जिन्हें एनटी रामाराव और एनटीआर के नाम से आमतौर पर जाना जाता है। दक्षिण की फिल्मों में अपार सफलता प्राप्त एनटीआर बाद में राजनीति में आए और तीन बार आंध्र प्रदेश के मुख्यमंत्री रहे। चंद्रबाबू नायडू उन्हीं के दामाद हैं।

1934 कनाडा के ओंटारियो में ओलिवा और एल्जायर डिओन के यहां पांच बच्चों ने जन्म लिया। इतिहास में यह पहला मौका था जब एक साथ इतने बच्चे एक महिला ने पैदा किये और यह पांचों बच्चे जीवित रहे।

1937 दुनिया की मशहूर कार निर्माता कंपनी फॉक्सवैगन शुरू की गइ। तब जर्मनी में तानाशाह एडोल्फ हिटलर का राज था और कंपनी भी पूरी तरह नाजी पार्टी के कब्जे में थी। कंपनी को शुरू करने के पीछे उद्देश्य यह था कि आम लोगों को कम कीमत में कार मिले। हिटलर ने कार की डिजाइन की जिम्मेदारी ऑस्ट्रेलिया के एक ऑटोमोबाइल इंजीनियर फर्डिनेंड पोर्श को सौंपी। 1939 में बर्लिन ऑटो शो में कंपनी के पहले कार मॉडल को आम लोगों के सामने पेश किया गया। इसी साल दूसरा विश्वयुद्ध शुरू हो गया, इस कारण कंपनी को अपना कामकाज बंद करना पड़ा। युद्ध खत्म होने के बाद कंपनी फिर शुरू हुई, लेकिन नाजी पार्टी से संबंधित होने के कारण अमेरिका जैसे बड़े मार्केट में कंपनी को खासी परेशानी का सामना करना पड़ा। 1959 में फॉक्सवैगन ने इसी कार को अमेरिका में बीटल नाम से लॉन्च किया। जबरदस्त मार्केटिंग कैंपेन के बाद कंपनी का ये मॉडल चल निकला। 1972 तक 1.5 करोड़ से भी ज्यादा बीटल कारें सड़कों पर दौड़ रही थीं। फॉक्सवैगन को आज सबसे ज्यादा बीटल के लिए ही जाना जाता है। करीब 8 दशकों बाद 2019 में कंपनी ने बीटल का उत्पादन बंद करने की घोषणा की।

1946 साहित्य अकादमी पुरस्कार पाने वाले विख्यात मलयालम कवि के सत्चिदानंदन का जन्म त्रिसूर में हुआ।

1952 मोदी सरकार द्वारा नियुक्त पहले लोकपाल और इससे पहले सुप्रीम कोर्ट के जज रह चुके पिनाकी चंद्र घोष का जन्म कलकत्ता में हुआ। इसी दिन यूनान ने देश की महिला नागरिकों को मतदान का अधिकार दिया।

1959 दो अमेरिकी बंदरों ने अंतरिक्ष की सफल यात्रा की। प्राणियों को अंतरिक्ष में भेजने के प्रारंभिक प्रयोगों में से यह एक था।

1960 भारत के शीर्ष दस फैशन डिजाइनरों में से एक वेंडल ऑगस्टीन रॉड्रीक्स का जन्म बंबई में हुआ। इसी दिन यूरोपीय संसद के सदस्य रहे ब्रिटिश राजनीतिज्ञ डेविड कैंपबेल बैनर्मन का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1961 विश्व में मानव अधिकारों के लिए लड़ने वाली संस्था एमनेस्टी इंटरनेशनल की स्थापना 28 मई 1961 को की गई थी। संस्था को एक वकील पीटर बेनेंसन ने शुरू किया था, जिसका उद्देश्य राजनीतिक कैदियों की रिहाई और इस बारे में लोगों को जागरूक करना था। ऐसे लोग जिन्हें उनकी त्वचा के रंग, धार्मिक मान्यता, धर्म, जाति, आदि वजहों से गिरफ्तार कर लिया गया था संस्था ऐसे लोगों की रिहाई के लिए प्रयास करती है और मानव अधिकारों के हनन पर सवाल उठाती है।। 1977 में मानव अधिकारों पर किए गए कामों के चलते एमनेस्टी इंटरनेशनल को नोबेल शांति पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया। एमनेस्टी के 50 से ज्यादा देशों में कार्यालय हैं और 150 से भी ज्यादा देशों में एमनेस्टी काम करती है, लेकिन सितंबर 2020 में संस्था ने भारत में अपना कामकाज बंद कर दिया। संस्था ने कहा कि भारत सरकार ने उसके बैंक खातों पर रोक लगा दी है, इसलिए उसने ये कदम उठाया है। असल में मोदी सरकार के आने के बाद मानवाधिकारों का हनन बढ़ गया। यहां कानूनी और गैरकानूनी दोनों तरह से लोगों पर हमले बढ़ गये। इस पर सवाल उठाने वाले सरकार और सत्तारूढ़ दल दोनों को पसंद नहीं हैं। इसलिए सरकार ने एमनेस्टी को काफी परेशान किया।

1964 भारत के प्रथम प्रधानमंत्री पं. जवाहरलाल नेहरू का अंतिम संस्कार किया गया। जिनका एक दिन पहले निधन हो गया था।

1965 धनबाद में खदान में धमाका होने से वहां काम करने वाले 375 लोगों की मौत हो गई।

1967 ब्रितानी नाविक सर फ्रांसिस चिटचेस्टर 65 साल की उम्र में अकेले नाव में दुनिया का चक्कर लगाकर घर पहुंचे।

1968 महान अमेरिकी मानवाधिकारवादी मार्टिन लूथर किंग जूनियर को जवाहर लाल नेहरू सद्भावना पुरस्कार प्रदान किया गया।

1970 आल इंडिया ट्रेड यूनियन कांग्रेस का औपचारिक तौर पर विभाजन हुआ।

1975 लक्षद्वीप से राष्ट्रवादी कांग्रेस पार्टी के लोकसभा सदस्य पीपी मोहम्मद फैजल का जन्म हुआ।

1978 विख्यात भारतीय पाॅप गायक, रैपर, संगीतज्ञ और उद्यमी, कारोबारी शील ओसवाल का जन्म लुधियाना में हुआ।

1989 लोकप्रिय, खूबसूरत, बोल्ड मलयालम फिल्म एवं टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री, गीत लेखिका, यूट्यूबर और बहुप्रतिभावान पर्ल मानी का जन्म कोच्चि, केरल में हुआ। केरल में जन्मी मारथाकवली डेविड भारत की पहली और विश्व की दूसरी महिला ईसाई पादरी बनीं।

1995 भारत में असंगठित क्षेत्र मजदूरों के आंदोलनों, अधिकारों के लिए सहयोग को बढ़ावा देने के लिए बैंगलोर में नेशनल सेंटर फॉर लेबर की शुरुआत की गई।

1996 तेलूगू सिनेमा और टेलीविजन की जानी मानी, खूबसूरत, बोल्ड अभिनेत्री एवं नर्तकी तथा माॅडल पुनर्नवी गोपालम का जन्म तेनाली, हैदराबाद में हुआ। इसी दिन प्रधानमंत्री अटल बिहारी वाजपेयी ने बहुमत न होने के कारण इस्तीफा दिया। इसी दिन 1996 में रूस ने चेचेन्या को अधिकतम स्वायत्तता देने पर सहमति जताई।

1998 पकिस्तान ने पांच भूमिगत परमाणु परिक्षण किये। इससे महज एक सप्ताह पहले भारत ने इसी तरह के परमाणु परिक्षण किये थे।

1999 इसराइली प्रधानमंत्री बेंजामिन नेतान्याहू ने इस्तीफा इसी दिन तुर्की में नयी गठबंधन सरकार का गठन हुआ।

2000 भारतीय राष्ट्रपति के. आर. नारायणन चीन के साथ द्विपक्षीय संबंधों को बढ़ावा देने हेतु छह दिनों की राजकीय यात्रा पर पेइचिंग पहुँचे।

2002 नेपाल में फिर से आपातकाल लागू किया गया।

2008 नेपाल में 240 सालों से चली आ रही राजशाही का अंत हुआ। इसी दिन 2008 में अमेरिका ने पाकिस्तान परस्त आतंकवादी संगठन लश्कर-ए-तैयबा के चार नेताओं पर वित्तीय प्रतिबंध लगाया। इसी दिन निजी विमान सेवा जेट एयरवेज को मध्य एशिया सर्वश्रेष्ठ चरगो एयर लाइंस का पुरस्कार मिला।

2010 पश्चिम बंगाल के पशिम मेदिनीपुर जिले में एक ट्रेन के पटरी से उतरने से कम से कम 141 यात्रियों की मौत हो गई।

2011 चेन्नई सुपर किंग्स ने रॉयल चैलेंजर्स बेंगलुरु को हराकर आईपीए का फाइनल जीता।

2013 वर्ल्ड मेन्सट्रुअल हाइजीन डे यानी विश्व मासिक धर्म स्वच्छता दिवस मनाने की शुरुआत हुई। इसे जर्मन स्वयं सेवी संगठन वाश यूनाइटेड ने शुरू किया था। तब से प्रति वर्ष 28 मई को ‘विश्व मासिक धर्म स्वच्छता दिवस’ सेलिब्रेट किया जाता है। प्रति वर्ष 28 मई को दुनिया भर में विश्व मासिक धर्म स्वच्छता दिवस यानी वर्ल्ड मेन्सट्रुअल हाइजीन डे मनाया जाता है। इस दिन का आयोजन माहवारी या मासिक धर्म के प्रति स्वच्छता बनाये रखने और इस से संबंधित भ्रांतियां मिटाने के उद्देश्य से मनाया जाता है।

In 1737 the amateur astronomer John Beavis observed Venus pass in front of Mercury at the Royal Greenwich Observatory in England.

1883 Manuwadi, feudal varna, caste and religious discrimination, supporter of hatred, Indo-Pak partition i.e. bi-nationalism, freedom fighter in youth and later British ally Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was born in Bhagur, Maharashtra.

Shantanurao Laxmanrao Kirloskar was born in 1903 in a Maharashtrian Karade Brahmin family. He contributed significantly in the expansion of the Kirloskar industry-business group.

1908 Ian Fleming, noted British detective novelist, storyteller, author of the espionage novel James Bond, was born.

1914 Group Captain Wilfrid George Gerald Duncan Smith, known as the Flang Ace of the British Air Force, was born in Madras.

1918 John Morrison Birch, Intelligence Commander in the United States Army Air Forces Military, a prominent American spy, was born in Landour, Mussoorie (Dehradun).

1921 Present Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Ajay Singh Bisht i.e. Yogi Aditya Nath's guru, politician and Mahant Kirpal Singh Bisht i.e. Mahant Avaidyanath of Gorakhpeeth Gorakhpur was born in Pauri Garhwal.

1923 Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, popularly known as NT Rama Rao and NTR, popular South Indian actor and later politician, was born. NTR, who had immense success in southern films, later entered politics and was the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh thrice. Chandrababu Naidu is his son-in-law.

1934 Five children were born to Oliva and Elzire Dion in Ontario, Canada. This was the first time in history when a woman gave birth to so many children at the same time and all these five children survived.

1937 Volkswagen, the world's famous car manufacturer, was launched. Germany was then ruled by dictator Adolf Hitler and the company was also completely under the control of the Nazi Party. 1959 Two American monkeys made a successful trip to space. It was one of the earliest experiments to send living beings into space.

1960 Wendell Augustine Rodricks, one of India's top ten fashion designers, is born in Bombay. On this day David Campbell Bannerman, a British politician who was a member of the European Parliament, was born in Bombay.

1996 Punarnavi Gopalam, a well-known, beautiful, bold actress and dancer and model of Telugu cinema and television, was born in Tenali, Hyderabad. On the same day Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee resigned due to lack of majority. On this day in 1996, Russia agreed to grant maximum autonomy to Chechnya.
