1293 जापान के कामाकुरा क्षेत्र में आए विनाशकारी भूकंप से 30 हजार से अधिक लोगों की मौत हुई और व्यापक क्षेत्र में भारी नुकसान हुआ।

1378 दक्षिण भारत के दक्कन प्रांत के शासक बहमनी सुल्तान दाउद की हत्या कर दी गई।

1421 तुगलक राजशाही की समाप्ति के बाद दिल्ली के पहले सैयद शासक हुए खिज्र खान की मौत हुई। खिज्र खान शिया थे और खुद को पैगंबर मोहम्मद का वंशज मानते थे।

1506 जेनोआ, इटली में जन्मे और 1492 में अमेरिका खोजने वाले प्रसिद्ध इतालवी नाविक, यात्री क्रिटोफर कोलंबस का स्पेन में निधन हुआ।

1677 छत्रपति शिवाजी ने जिंगी के किले पर विजय प्राप्त की।

1766 इंदौर के होल्कर राजवंश के संस्थापक मल्हारराव होल्कर का निधन हुआ।

1784 पेरिस शांति संधि के तहत नीदरलैंड ने भारत और इंडोनेशिया में अपने कब्जे वाली कुछ जगहें ब्रिटेन को दे दीं।

1845 प्रसिद्ध सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता, दार्शनिक, लेखक, पत्रकार, प्रमुख तमिल जातिवादी भेदभाव विरोधी कार्यकर्ता और सिद्ध पद्यति चिकित्सक, दक्षिण भारतीय साक्य बौद्धवादी सी. अयोतिथास पंडिदर का जन्म नीलगिरीस में हुआ। अयोतिथास ने बौद्ध धर्म अपना लिया था पेरियार के अनुयायियों को भी ऐसा करने का आह्वान किया, यह तर्क देते हुए कि बौद्ध धर्म उनका मूल धर्म था। उन्होंने रेट्टामलाई श्रीनिवासन के साथ 1891 में पंचमार महाजन सभा की भी स्थापना की।

1873 अमेरिका में सैन फ्रैंसिस्को के बिजनेसमैन लेवी स्ट्रॉस और दर्जी जेकब डेविस को दुनिया की पहली जींस बनाने का पेटंट दिया मिला।

1891 प्रख्यात आविष्कारक थॉमस एल्वा एडिसन ने अपने फिल्म दिखाने के उपकरण काइनेटोस्कोप के प्रोटोटाइप को नेशनल फेडरेशन के सामने पहली बार सार्वजनिक रूप से पेश किया।

1894 भारतीय आध्यात्मिक गुरु और कांचि कामकोटि पीठम के 68वें प्रमुख चंद्रशेखरेंद्र सरस्वती का जन्म विलुप्पुरम, केरल में हुआ।

1900 प्रख्यात छायावादी हिंदी कवि सुमित्रानंदन पंत का जन्म कौसानी, कुमाऊं में हुआ। उन्हें भारतीय ज्ञानपीठ और पद्मभूषण सम्मान मिला। वे 4 छायावादी कवियों, जयशंकर प्रसाद, सूर्यकांत त्रिपाठी निराला और महादेवी के साथ शामिल थे। उनकी एक कविता की चार पंक्तियां, मैंने छुटपन में छिपकर पैसे बोये थे, सोचा था पैसों के प्यारे पेड़ उगेंगे, रुपयों की कलदार मधुर फसलें खनकेंगी, और फूल फलकर मैं मोटा सेठ बनूंगा।

1902 क्यूबा अमेरिका की गुलामी से आजाद हुआ।

1910 पद्म भूषण सम्मान प्राप्त करने वाले प्रसिद्ध मूर्तिकार रामकिंकर बैज का जन्म हुआ।

1927 सऊदी अरब ब्रिटेन की गुलामी से स्वतंत्र हुआ।

1929 स्वतंत्रता सेनानी एवं चंपारण सत्याग्रहियों में से एक राजकुमार शुक्ल का निधन हुआ।

1932 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय स्वतंत्रता सेनानी विपिन चन्द्र पाल का निधन हुआ।

1939 विख्यात भारतीय तमिल फिल्मकार, पटकथाकार, सिनेमाटोग्राफर बालानाथन बालू महेंद्रन का जन्म बट्टीकलोआ, श्रीलंका में हुआ।

1941 सिंगापुर के दूसरे प्रधानमंत्री हुए गोह चोक तोंग का जन्म हुआ।

1945 पंजाब के प्रमुख राजनीतिज्ञ, शिरोमणी अकाली दल के अध्यक्ष रहे तथा कई बार लोकसभा सदस्य रहे सिमरनजीत सिंह मान का जन्म शिमला, हिमाचल प्रदेश में हुआ।

1955 विख्यात तेलुगू थिएटर और फिल्म कलाकार, गीतकार सिरीवेन्नेला सीतारामा शास्त्री का जन्म अनाकापल्ली, आंध्र प्रदेश में हुआ।

1957 प्रसिद्ध स्वतंत्रता सेनानी और आंध्र प्रदेश के प्रथम मुख्यमंत्री हुए टी. प्रकाशम का निधन हुआ।

1958 ब्रिटेन के हाई वायकॉम शहर के नए महापौर लेस्ली ब्रेन के वजन की ये देखने के लिए सार्वजनिक रूप से जांच की गई कि करदाताओं के पैसे से कहीं उन पर चर्बी तो नहीं चढ़ रही है।

1959 गुवाहाटी उच्च न्यायालय के मुख्य न्यायाधीश और सर्वोच्च न्यायालय में जज हुए एएस बोपन्ना का जन्म मेडीकरी, कर्नाटक में हुआ।

1964 उड़नपरी कही गई प्रसिद्ध भारतीय धाविका पीटी उषा का जन्म हुआ।

1965 ब्रिटेन की पुलिस को हथियारबंद अपराधियों और खतरनाक व्यक्तियों के खिलाफ आंसू गैस की बंदूकें और गोले इस्तेमाल करने की अनुमति दी गई। इसी दिन 1965 में कमांडर एमएस कोहली के नेतृत्व में पहला भारतीय दल एवरेस्ट की चोटी पर पहुंचने में सफल हुआ। 1965 में इसी दिन मिस्र में पाकिस्तानी बोइंग विमान 720-बी के दुर्घटनाग्रस्त होने से लगभग 100 लोगों की जान गई।

1966 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय कंप्यूटर विज्ञानी एवं भारतीय प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान कानपुर में संगणक तथा अभियांत्रिकी विभाग में प्रोफेसर मनिंद्र अग्रवाल का जन्म इलाहाबाद में हुआ।

1968 1968 जाने माने भारतीय राजनीतिज्ञ और केंद्रीय कौशल विकास और उद्यमिता राज्य मंत्री रहे, लोकसभा सदस्य, भाजपा नेता अनंत कुमार हेगड़े का जन्म हुआ।

1972 प्रधानमंत्री श्रीमती इंदिरा गांधी ने दूसरे हावड़ा ब्रिज की आधारशिला रखी। इसी दिन ब्रजभाषा के प्रसिद्ध कवि गयाप्रसाद शुक्ल सनेही का निधन हुआ।

1974 विख्यात बांग्ला फिल्म निर्देशक, लेखक तथा अभिनेता शिबोप्रोसाद मुखर्जी का जन्म बारानगर में हुआ।

1977 जानी मानी भारतीय क्रिकेटर और महिला क्रिकेट टीम की कप्तान हुईं अंजुम चोपड़ा का जन्म दिल्ली में हुआ।

1978 जाने माने भारतीय क्रिकेटर रमेश पोवार का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1981 जानी मानी अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल माया अलघ की 4 वर्ष की आयु से अभिनय की शुरुआत करने वाली बेटी, खूबसूरत, बोल्ड और सुपरिचित अभिनेत्री तथा माॅडल अंजोरी अलघ का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1983 दक्षिण अफ्रीका की राजधानी प्रीटोरिया में हुए कार बम धमाके में कम से कम 16 लोगों की मौत हुई और 130 से अधिक घायल हुए। इसी दिन 1983 में प्रसिद्ध दक्षिण भारतीय फिल्म अभिनेता और गायक एनटी राम राव जूनियर का जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन भारतीय फील्ड हॉकी खिलाड़ी पृथ्वीपाल सिंह का निधन हुआ।

1989 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय संगीत संगीतकार और दक्षिण भारतीय फिल्म उद्योग के विख्यात बांसुरी वादक विष्णु विजय का जन्म हुआ।

1990 हबल स्पेस टेलीस्कोप ने पहली बार अंतरिक्ष की तस्वीरें धरती पर भेजी थीं।

1994 भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के प्रमुख नेता और आंध्र प्रदेश के मुख्यमंत्री रहे कासू ब्रह्मानंद रेड्डी का निधन हुआ।

2010 लेखक जे जी फेरल को उनके उपन्यास ट्रबल्स के लिए बुकर पुरस्कार प्रदान किया गया। यह प्रतिष्ठित ब्रिटिश पुरस्कार पहली बार किसी दिवंगत लेखक को दिया गया। 40 साल पहले 1970 में प्रकाशित इस उपन्यास को द लास्ट बुकर पुरस्कार दशक की पुस्तकों की श्रेणी में दिया गया।

2011 प्रधानमंत्री मनमोहन सिंह ने मध्य प्रदेश में हजारों करोड़ की लागत से बनी बीना ऑयल रिफाइनरी देश को समर्पित की। इसी दिन 2011 में झारखंड की पर्वतारोही प्रेमलता अग्रवाल ने दुनिया के सबसे ऊंचे पर्वत शिखर माउंट एवरेस्ट पर चढ़ने वाली सबसे उम्रदराज भारतीय महिला होने का गौरव हासिल करते हुए पर्वतारोहण के क्षेत्र में कीर्तिमान बनाया। 2010 में दिल्ली में हुए कॉमनवेल्थ खेलों में घोटाले के आरोपों में 20 मई 2011 को सीबीआई ने पहली चार्जशीट दाखिल की। इसमें भारतीय ओलिंपिक संघ के तत्कालीन प्रमुख सुरेश कलमाड़ी समेत 9 लोगों को आरोपी बनाया गया। 

2012 प्रसिद्ध मानव विज्ञानी और नारीवादी विद्वान लीला दुबे का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन इटली में आए भूकंप में 27 लोगों की मौत हो गई।

2018 संयुक्त राष्ट्र महासभा ने 20 मई को मधुमक्खियों के बारे में जनजागरूकता, संरक्षण और महत्व को समर्पित विश्व मधुमक्खी दिवस के रूप में घोषित किया
