1479 थुटमोस तृतीय मिस्र के अठारहवें वंश का छठा फिरौन यानी राजा बना, यद्यपि अपना शासन चलाने से पहले वह 22 वर्ष अपनी चाची के संरक्षण में था, क्योंकि बाल्यावस्था में ही उसे राजा बनना पड़ा था।

1547 रोमन सम्राट चार्ल्स पंचम ने प्रोटेस्टेंट राजकुमारों के लुथेरन श्मल्कालिक लीग पर मुहालबर्ग की लड़ाई में निर्णायक जीत के लिए शाही सैनिकों का नेतृत्व किया।

1704 ब्रिटिश आधिपत्य वाले उत्तरी अमेरिका में साप्ताहिक समाचार पत्र द बोस्टन न्यूज-लेटर का पहला अंक प्रकाशित किया गया। शुरुआत 17 अप्रैल को हुई थी। इस अंक में 17 से 24 अप्रैल तारीख अंकित की गई थी। जॉन कैंपबेल द्वारा संपादित अमेरिका का प्रथम नियमित अखबार बोस्टन, मेसाचुसेटस से प्रकाशित किया, द बोस्टन न्यूज-लैटर। इसे ब्रिटिश आर्थिक मदद से प्रकाशित किया गया और छपने से पहले ब्रिटेन सरकार की अनुमति लेनी पड़ती थी। तब अमेरिका ब्रिटेन का उपनिवेश था।

1800 द लाइब्रेरी ऑफ कांग्रेस या नेशनल लाइब्रेरी ऑफ द युनाइटिड स्टेट्स की स्थापना वाशिंगटन में की गई।

1815 ब्रिटिश भारतीय सरकार द्वारा नई रेजिमेंट बनाई गई जिसमें नेपाल के गोरखाओं को भर्ती किया गया। इसके बाद से गोरखा ब्रिटिश सेना में भर्ती होने लगे। 1947 में भारत की आजादी के समय ब्रिटिश सेना में 10 गोरखा रेजिमेंट थी। अंग्रेजों ने 10 में 6 रेजिमेंट भारत को देने का फैसला किया। बाकी 4 अंग्रेज अपने साथ ले जाना चाहते थे। लेकिन, उन 4 रेजिमेंट के गोरखाओं ने अंग्रेजों के साथ जाने से मना कर दिया। स्वतंत्रता प्राप्ति पर्यंत ब्रिटिश सेना की 6 गोरखा रेजिमेंट भारतीय सेना का हिस्सा बन गईं। 1950 में भारत के गणराज्य बनने के बाद इसका नाम गोरखा राइफल्स रखा गया। भारत, नेपाल और अंग्रेजों के बीच एक समझौता हुआ, जिसके मुताबिक भारत की सेना में गोरखाओं की भर्ती होती रहेगी। बाद में भारत ने सातवीं रेजिमेंट बनाई, जिनमें उन चार रेजिमेंट के सैनिकों को शामिल किया गया, जिन्होंने अंग्रेंजों के साथ जाने से मना कर दिया था। प्रति वर्ष 1200 से 1300 नए नेपाल के गोरखा जनजाति के लोग भारतीय सेना में शामिल किए जाते हैं। भारतीय सेना में 7 गोरखा रेजिमेंट है। नेपाल से आने वाले सभी नेपाली बोलने वाले जवानों को गोरखा नहीं माना जाता। गोरखा वे ही हैं जो लिम्बू, थापा, मगर्स आदि जातियों से संबंध रखते हैं। इन सभी गोरखा जातियों की अपनी बोलियां हैं।

1877 रुस ने ओटोमन साम्राज्य के खिलाफ लड़ाई की घोषणा की।

1888 अमेरिकन कारोबारी जॉर्ज ईस्टमैन ने कैमरा और फिल्म रील निर्माण कंपनी कोडक की न्यू याॅर्क में स्थापना की।

1898 स्पेन ने अमेरिका के खिलाफ युद्ध की घोषणा की।

1908 भारतीय अधिवक्ता, पत्रकार और राजनीतिज्ञ वायलेट अल्वा का जन्म हुआ।

1915 जर्मन सेना ने बेल्जियम के फ्लेमिस प्रांत के आइपर क्षेत्र में क्लोरोफोर्म गैस छोडी। इसी दिन ओटोमन साम्राज्य यानी तुर्की में हजारों अर्मेनियाई लोगों का नरसंहार, किया गया।

1916 ब्रिटिश आधिपत्य वाले आयरलैंड में पैट्रिक पियर्स के नेतृत्व में आयरिश रिपब्लिकन ने ब्रिटेन के खिलाफ विरोध अभियान ईस्टर राइजिंग शुरू कर आयरिश गणराज्य स्वतंत्र राज्य घोषित किया।

1920 पोलैंड की सेना ने यू्क्रेन पर हमला किया।

1922 इतालवी राजनेता सुजान्ना अग्नेली का जन्म हुआ।

1926 बर्लिन संधी पर दस्तखत हुए।

1928 प्रसिद्ध कन्नड़ अभिनेता डा. राजकुमार यानी सिंगनल्लूर पुट्टास्वामैया मुत्तुराज राजकुमार का जन्म हुआ। इन्हें भारत सरकार ने पद्म भूषण सम्मान से सम्मानित किया।

1929 गुजरे जमाने की मशहूर फिल्म अभिनेत्री शम्मी यानी नरगिस रबादी का जन्म हुआ।

1934 प्रसिद्ध पाकिस्तानी गायक अहमद रुश्दी का जन्म हैदराबाद रियासत में हुआ। इसी दिन न्यायाधीश एवं राजनेता सी. शंकरन नायर का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन प्रख्यात लेखक, आलोचक, अभिनेता, पत्रकार, फिल्मकार डी जयकांतन का जन्म हुआ।

1938 200 से भी अधिक भारतीय फिल्मों में चरित्र/खलनायक का अभिनय करने वाले मैक मोहन यानी मोहन मैकीजानी का जन्म कराची, पाकिस्तान में हुआ। इन्होंने ज्यादातर रोल खलनायक के किए। यह प्रसिद्ध अभिनेत्री रवीना टंडन के मामा हैं।

1942 प्रख्यात मराठी रंगमंच अभिनेता, गायक, शास्त्रीय संगीतज्ञ तथा नाट्य संगीतकार दीनानाथ मंगेशकर का निधन हुआ।

1944 हिन्दी दैनिक समाचार पत्र आज के संस्थापक और प्रसिद्ध क्रांतिकारी शिवप्रसाद गुप्त का निधन। इसी दिन पहले कांग्रेस और बाद में जनता दल के प्रमुख नेता हुए अरुण नेहरू का जन्म लखनऊ में हुआ।

1946 विख्यात भारतीय महिला अधिकारवादी, सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता, समाज विज्ञानी, लेखिका, कवियत्री, आलोचक कमला भसीन का जन्म शहीदांवाली, पाकिस्तान में हुआ। 

1954 ऑस्ट्रेलिया और सोवियत संघ ने राजनयिक संबंध समाप्त किये। 1954 ब्रिटिश सरकार ने कीनिया के विद्रोहियों के विरुद्ध कड़ी कार्रवाई का आदेश दिया। कीनिया के विद्रोहियों ने देश में रहने वाले गोरे लोगों के खिलाफ गुरिल्ला अभियान चलाया था, जिसे उन्होंने माउ माउ नाम दिया था।

1956 छत्तीसगढ़ राज्य की पहली महिला कलाकार पंडवानी गायिका तीजनबाई का जन्म हुआ। पूर्व प्रधान न्यायाधीश शरद अरविंद बोबड़े का जन्म नागपुर में हुआ।

1957 स्वेज नहर को लंबे समय के संकट के बाद दोबारा खोला गया। मिस्र के फ्रांस, ब्रिटेन और इजरायल के साथ हुए विवाद के बाद इसे अक्टूबर 1956 में बंद कर दिया गया था। मिस्र ने इस नहर का राष्ट्रीयकरण कर दिया था, जिससे मिस्र का कई देशों के साथ विवाद हो गया तब इसे बंद कर दिया गया था।

1960 प्रख्यात लेखक और सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता अन्ना साहब भोपटकर का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन दक्षिण पर्सिया में आये भयंकर भूकंप से लगभग 500 लोगों की जान गयी। 

1962 एमआईटी ने पहली बार सेटेलाइट से टीवी सिग्नल भेजा।

1967 सोवियत अंतरिक्ष यात्री व्लादिमीर कोमारोव एक अंतरिक्ष अभियान के दौरान दम तोड़ने वाले पहले व्यक्ति बने। वापसी में पृथ्वी के वातावरण में प्रवेश करने के कुछ देर बाद उनके अंतरिक्ष यान के पैराशूट के तार उलझ गए और वह कई मील की ऊंचाई से धरती पर आ गिरे।

1970 पहला चाइनीज सेटेलाइट डांग फांग हांग लांच किया गया।

1972 भारत के प्रसिद्ध चित्रकार यामिनी रॉय का निधन हुआ।

1973 सरकार और पूंजीवादी व्यवस्था द्वारा क्रिकेट के भगवान कहे गये सचिन तेंदुलकर का जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन भारतीय जनता पार्टी नेता और गोवा के मुख्यमंत्री प्रमोद सावंत का जन्म हुआ।

1974 प्रधानमंत्री जवाहर लाल नेहरू के करीबी रहे बिहार के सिमरैया में जन्मे प्रसिद्ध स्वतंत्रता सेनानी, हिंदी एवं मैथिली के प्रमुख कवि, लेखक, वक्ता रामधारी सिंह ‘दिनकर’ का निधन मद्रास में हुआ।

1975 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय क्रिकेट खिलाड़ी मन्नवा श्री कांत प्रसाद यानी एमएसके प्रसाद का जन्म मेडीकोंडुरू आंध्र प्रदेश में हुआ।

1981 खूबसूरत, बोल्ड जानी मानी टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री और माॅडल कनिका माहेश्वरी का जन्म अलीगढ़ में हुआ।

1982 पंद्रह वर्ष इजरायली कब्जे में रहा सिनाई प्रायःद्वीप क्षेत्र मिस्र को वापस मिला।

1987 प्रभावशाली अभिनेता वरुण धवन का जन्म हुआ।

1990 लोकप्रिय, बोल्ड, खूबसूरत कन्नड़, तमिल, तेलुगू फिल्म एवं टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री तथा माॅडल रचिता महालक्ष्मी का जन्म बंगलौर में हुआ। इसी दिन हबल अंतरिक्ष दूरबीन को पृथ्वी की कक्षा में लॉन्च किया गया। पृथ्वी के वायुमंडल की अशुद्धियों से दूर 2.4 मीटर एपर्चर वाला यह टेलीस्कोप अब तक ब्रह्मांड के कई अनदेखे रहस्यों को सामने ला चुका है।

1991 जानी मानी खूबसूरत बोल्ड टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल नेहा सक्सेना का जन्म आगरा में हुआ।

1998 भारतीय क्रिकेट टीम ने शारजाह में ऑस्ट्रेलिया को छह विकेट से हराकर कोका कोला कप जीता। इसी दिन 1998 में क्लोन भेड़ डॉली ने एक स्वस्थ मेमने बॉनी को जन्म दिया।

2002 अर्जेन्टीना ने बैंक अनिश्चित काल के लिए बंद किए।

2005 सर्वोच्च इसाई धर्माधिकारी पोप बेनेडिक्ट 16वें ने रोमन कैथोलिक चर्च के नए प्रमुख का कार्यभार औपचारिक रूप से ग्रहण किया। उन्होंने पोप जॉन पॉल द्वितीय से यह जिम्मेदारी प्राप्त की, जो रिटायर हो रहे थे।

2006 नेपाल में संसद बहाल की गई।

2008 नेपाल में चुनाव के बाद नई सरकार का गठन करने जा रहे माओवादी नेता पुष्पकमल दहल उर्फ प्रचंड ने भारत व नेपाल के मध्य 1950 में हुई संधि को समाप्त करने की घोषणा की।

2009 प्रसिद्ध लेखक, कवि तथा ओजस्वी वक्ता महात्मा रामचन्द्र वीर का निधन हुआ।

2010 भारत में पहला पंचायती राज दिवस मनाया गया। 24 अप्रैल को राष्ट्रीय पंचायती राज दिवस मनाने की शुरुआत प्रधानमंत्री डा. मनमोहन सिंह ने की। यह दिन 24 अप्रैल, 1993 के ऐतिहासिक दिन को चिह्नित करने के लिए मनाया जाता है, जब संविधान (73वां संशोधन) अधिनियम, 1992 लागू हुआ था। इस अधिनियम के तहत ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों में पंचायती राज संस्थाओं (पीआरआई) ग्राम पंचायत, क्षेत्र पंचायत और जिला पंचायत का निर्माण हुआ। ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों के विकास के लिए त्रिस्तरीय पंचायत प्रणाली में तीनों संस्थाओं के अध्यक्षों और सदस्यों का चुनाव जनता के मतदान के द्वारा होता है।

2013 बांगलादेश की राजधानी ढाका में गिरे एक भवन में लगभग 1129 लोगों की मौत हो गई और 2500 से ज्यादा घायल हो गए।

2013 अफगानिस्तान के जलालाबाद में 5.7 तीव्रता के भीषण भूकंप में 33 लोगों की मौत, 115 घायल।

1815 A new regiment was formed by the British Indian government in which Gurkhas from Nepal were recruited. After this Gurkhas started getting recruited in the British Army. Every year 1200 to 1300 new people from Nepal's Gorkha tribe are inducted into the Indian Army. There are 7 Gorkha Regiments in the Indian Army. All Nepali speaking jawans coming from Nepal are not considered Gurkhas. Gorkhas are those who belong to castes like Limbu, Thapa, Mugars etc. All these Gorkha castes have their own dialects.

1938 Mac Mohan aka Mohan Macijani, who acted as a character/villain in more than 200 Indian films, was born in Karachi, Pakistan. He did most of the roles of villains. He is the maternal uncle of famous actress Raveena Tandon.

1942 Dinanath Mangeshkar, eminent Marathi theater actor, singer, classical musician and theater composer, passed away.

1944 Founder of Hindi daily newspaper Aaj and famous revolutionary Shivprasad Gupta passed away. On this day, Arun Nehru, who became a prominent leader of Congress and later of Janata Dal, was born in Lucknow.

1946 Kamla Bhasin, noted Indian women's rights activist, social activist, sociologist, author, poet, critic, was born in Shaheedanwali, Pakistan.

1954 Australia and the Soviet Union end diplomatic relations. 1954 British government ordered strong action against the rebels of Kenya. The Kenyan rebels launched a guerrilla campaign against the white people living in the country, which they named the Mau Mau.

1956 Pandwani singer Teejanbai, the first woman artist of Chhattisgarh state, was born. Former Chief Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde was born in Nagpur.
