1547 हेनरी अष्टम की मृत्यु के बाद एडवर्ड षष्ठम का इंग्लैंड के सम्राट के रूप में वैस्टमिनिस्टर ऐबे में राज्याभिषेक हुआ। 

1798 फ्रांस के सम्राट लुई एलेक्जेंडर बर्थियर ने पोप पायस छठवें को पद से हटा दिया।

1811 ऑस्ट्रिया को दिवालिया घोषित किया गया।

1833 मिस्र के साथ युद्ध में तुर्की की मदद के लिए रूसी जहाज बास्फोरस की खाड़ी में पहुँचे।

1835 छात्रों के प्रवेश के साथ कोलकाता मेडिकल कॉलेज की आधिकारिक शुरुआत हुई। इस कॉलेज की स्थापना 28 जनवरी 1835 को हुई थी। यह ऐशिया का दूसरा बड़ा चिकित्सा शिक्षा केंद्र था। इसकी स्थापना ब्रिटेन के भारत में प्रमुख लाॅर्ड विलियम बेंटिक ने करवाई।

1846 सोबरॉन के युद्ध में सिखों की हार के बाद अंग्रेजों का लाहौर पर कब्जा हुआ।

1847 राॅयल कलकत्ता टर्फ क्लब की स्थापना हुई।

1868 शिशिर कुमार और मोतीलाल बोस द्वारा स्थापित बांग्ला साप्ताहिक अखबार अमृत बाजार पत्रिका’का पहला अंक प्रकाशित हुआ। इसका दैनिक के रूप में पहला अंक 20 फरवरी 1891 को प्रकाशित हुआ।

1872 अमेरिका के न्यूयार्क शहर में मेट्रोपोलिटन म्यूजियम ऑफ आर्ट्स’ खुला। यह संयुक्त राज्य में सबसे बड़ा आर्ट म्यूजियम है जिसमें दो मिलियन से अधिक कलाओं का संग्रह है। 

1873 कैलिफोर्निया यूनिवर्सिटी ने सैन फ्रांसिस्को में अपने पहले मेडिकल कॉलेज की शुरुआत की।

1900 पाकिस्तान के संस्थापक मोहम्मद अली जिन्नाह की पत्नी रतनबाई (पुत्री दिनशा पेटिट एवं दीनाबाई) का जन्म मुंबई में हुआ। विकीपीडिया के मुताबिक 20 फरवरी को ही इंग्लैंड में इनका निधन हुआ।

1901 आंध्र प्रदेश की बोब्बिली जमींदारी के राजा श्री रवु स्वेताचलापति सर रामकृष्ण रंगा राव का जन्म हुआ। रंगा राव ब्रिटिशकालीन भारतीय राजनीतिज्ञ, कानूनविद, जस्टिस पार्टी के नेता और जमींदार थे, जिन्होंने 5 नवंबर 1932 से 4 अप्रैल 1936 और 24 अगस्त 1936 से 1 अप्रैल 1937 तक मद्रास प्रेसीडेंसी के मुख्यमंत्री के रूप में कार्य किया। वह भारत की संविधान निर्मात्री सभा के सदस्य भी बने।

1909 अजय घोष का जन्म हुआ। यह भारतीय कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी के नेता थे।

1920 संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका के वैज्ञानिक रॉबर्ट पियरी का निधन हुआ।

1921 हरियाणा में एक राजघराने के अंतिम राजा राव बीरेन्द्र सिंह का जन्म हुआ। यह हरियाणा के राजनेता और दूसरे मुख्यमंत्री थे। केंद्र में भी मंत्री रहे।

1932 प्रसिद्ध कन्नड़ नाटककार के. वी. सुबन्ना का जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन प्रसिद्ध भारतीय उपन्यासकार, लघु कथा लेखक तथा फिल्म निर्देशक भबेन्द्र नाथ सैकिया का जन्म हुआ।

1933 जर्मन तानाशाह एडॉल्फ हिटलर ने चुनावों में नाजी पार्टी को सहयोग देने के लिए गुप्त तौर पर जर्मन उद्योगपतियों से मुलाकात की।

1934 रामकृष्ण मिशन के दूसरे संघाध्यक्ष स्वामी शिवानंद का निधन हुआ।

1935 भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के राजनीतिज्ञ और आंध्र प्रदेश के मुख्यमंत्री हुए एन. जनार्दन रेड्डी का जन्म हुआ। 1935 में इसी दिन कैरोलाइन मिकेल्सन अंटार्कटिक पहुँचने वाली विश्व की पहली महिला बनीं।

1936 अर्जुन अवार्ड प्राप्त प्रख्यात फुटबॉलर जरनैल सिंह ढिल्लों का जन्म हुआ।

1942 द्वितीय विश्वयुद्ध में जापानी सैनिकों ने डच ईस्ट इंडीज में बाली पर हमला कर दिया।

1946 प्रतिष्ठित हिंदी पत्रकार, कहानीकार, उपन्यासकार, समालोचक तथा सम्यांतर पत्रिका के संपादक-प्रकाशक पंकज बिष्ट का जन्म नौगांव, अल्मोड़ा में हुआ।

1946 मशहूर तेलुगू फिल्म अभिनेत्री, माॅडल, फिल्म निर्देशिका, निर्मात्री विजया निर्मला का जन्म हुआ।

1947 ब्रिटिश प्रधानमंत्री क्लेमेंट एटली ने भारत को आजाद करने की घोषणा की। एटली ने भारत को 30 जून 1948 तक स्वतंत्र करने की बात कही थी लेकिन 15 अगस्त 1947 को ही कर दिया गया। 1947 में इसी दिन लॉर्ड माउंटबेटन की भारत के आखिरी वायसराय के रूप में नियुक्ति की गई।

1948 भारतीय प्रशासनिक सेवा के अफसर, भारत सरकार के 29वें मुख्य सचिव हुए केएम चंद्रशेखर का जन्म केरल में हुआ।

1950 नेताजी सुभाष चंद्र बोस के बड़े भाई और राष्ट्रवादी नेता शरत चंद्र बोस का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन भारत की जानी मानी अर्थशास्त्री और रिजर्व बैंक की डिप्टी गवर्नर हुईं ऊषा थोराट का जन्म मद्रास में हुआ।

1953 मैसूर राज्य (अब कर्नाटक में) आखिरी राजा, राजनेता, फैशन डिजाइनर और मैसूर जिसे अब मैसुरु कहते हैं, से लोकसभा सदस्य श्रीकांतादत्ता नरसिम्हाराजा वाडियार का जन्म मैसूर में हुआ।

1956 जाने माने भारतीय फिल्म अभिनेता तथा टेलीविजन शो प्रस्तोता अनु कपूर का जन्म हुआ।

1962 जॉन एच ग्लेन अमेरिका के प्रथम अंतरिक्ष यात्री बने। प्रोजेक्ट मर्करी के लिए अमेरिकी अंतरिक्ष एजेंसी नासा द्वारा चुने गए सात लोगों में ग्लेन सबसे बड़े थे।

1964 दिल्ली में कंवलजीत सिंह बक्शी का जन्म हुआ। वे न्यूजीलैंड में नेशनल पार्टी के सदस्य और सांसद रहे।

1965 नासा (अमेरिका की सरकारी अंतरिक्ष एजेंसी - नेशनल एयरोनाॅटिक्स स्पेस एडमिनिस्ट्रेशन) द्वारा प्रेक्षेपित रेंजर आठ चांद पर उतरा और उसने वहां से तस्वीरें और जानकारियां भेजीं।

1968 मुंबई के के.ई.एम. अस्पताल के डाक्टर पी.के. सेन ने हृदय प्रत्यारोपण का भारत में पहला आपरेशन किया।

1972 जानी मानी बाॅलीवुड फिल्म कथा, पटकथा, गीत, संवाद लेखिका और निर्देशिका अन्विता दत्त गुप्तान का जन्म दिल्ली में हुआ। इसी दिन प्रख्यात हिंदी साहित्यकार शिवनारायण श्रीवास्तव का निधन हुआ।

1973 भारतीय फिल्म अभिनेता प्रियांशु चटर्जी का जन्म हुआ।

1975 लंदन में मार्गरेट थैचर ब्रिटिश कंजर्वेटिव पार्टी की नेता निर्वाचित हुई। बाद में वे ब्रिटेन की बहुत प्रभावशाली प्रधानमंत्री रहीं।

1976 मुंबई हाई में कच्चे तेल का व्यावसायिक स्तर पर उत्पादन शुरू हुआ। इसी दिन क्रिकेटर रोहन गावास्कर का जन्म हुआ।

1982 उत्तर प्रदेश, बिहार और मध्य प्रदेश के बीच कन्हार नदी जल पर समझौता हुआ।

1983 असम में होने वाली विधानसभा चुनाव से पहले व्यापक पैमाने पर हिंसा हुई। इसमें 600 लोगों की मौत हुई।

1985 साहित्य अकादमी पुरस्कार प्राप्त करने वाले प्रसिद्ध हिंदी कवि, लेखक तथा गांधीवादी विचारक भवानी प्रसाद मिश्र का निधन हुआ। 1986 में इसी दिन सोवियत संघ द्वारा सेल्युत-7 के मुकाबिल अधिक विकसित अंतरिक्ष स्टेशन मीर (शांति) का प्रक्षेपण।

1987 हिमाचल प्रदेश भारतीय संघ का 24वाँ राज्य बनाया गया। मिजोरम और अरुणाचल प्रदेश का क्रमशः 23वें एवं 24वें राज्य के रूप में उद्घाटन हुआ।

1988 बॉलीवुड की खूबसूरत, बोल्ड अभिनेत्री जिया खान का जन्म अमेरिका की वाणिज्यिक राजधानी न्यू याॅर्क में हुआ। गजनी, निशब्द और हाउसफुल इत्यादि कई फिल्मों में अभिनय करने वाली जिया ने 3 जून 2013 को मुंबई में आत्महत्या कर ली।

1988 ब्राजील की राजधानी रियो डी जेनेरो में बाढ़ से 65 लोग मारे गये और एक अस्पताल के 100 से अधिक लोग लापता हुए। इसी दिन 1988 में नागोर्नो-कराबाख स्वायत्त ओब्लास्ट ने अजरबैजान से अलग होने और आर्मेनिया में शामिल होने के पक्ष में मत किया, जिससे नागोर्नो-कराबाख युद्ध शुरू हो गया।

1989 प्रसिद्ध माॅडल और अभिनेत्री पत्रलेखा पाॅल का जन्म शिलौंग में हुआ। 1989 में इसी दिन आयरलैंड की ब्रिटेन से स्वतंत्रता के लिए संघर्षरत आयरिश रिपब्लिकन आर्मी द्वारा किये गए एक घमाके में टर्नहिल में ब्रिटिश सेना की एक बैरक ध्वस्त हुई।

1999 न्यूजीलैंड के प्रसिद्ध फुटबाॅल ख्लिाड़ी सरप्रीत सिंह का जन्म आॅक्लैंड में हुआ। इसी दिन प्रधानमंत्री अटल बिहारी वाजपेयी ने पाकिस्तान यात्रा के लिए बस से प्रस्थान किया। 1999 में इसी दिन भारत की सरकारी प्रसारण सेवा दूरदर्शन ने खेल चैनल शुरू किया।

2000 भारतीय मूल के ब्रिटिश लेखक सलमान रुश्दी ने ब्रिटेन छोड़कर न्यूयार्क में बसने का ऐलान किया।

2001 लिथुवानिया के राष्ट्रपति एडमकस भारत पहुँचे, दोनों देशों में तीन समझौते हुए। इसी दिन भाकपा के वरिष्ठ नेता एवं केंद्र में कृषि मंत्री रहे इन्द्रजीत गुप्त का निधन हुआ।

2003 रोड आइलैंड में स्टेशन रॉक क्लब में आग लगने से लगभग 100 लोग मारे गए।

2007 यूरोपीय संघ कार्बन डाई आक्साइड के उत्सर्जन को 2010 तक 20 प्रतिशत कम करने को सहमत हुआ।

2008 रक्षा सौदे में ऑफसेट नीति को मंजूरी मिली। इसी दिन भारतीय स्टेट बैंक नेतृत्व में चार सरकारी बैंको ने प्राथमिक ऋण दरों में 0.25 - 0.50 प्रतिशत तक कटौती की। इसी दिन अमेरिका में राष्ट्रपति पद के उम्मीदवार बराक हुसैन ओबामा ने अपनी नौवीं जीत दर्ज की।

2009 भ्रष्टाचार के आरोप में कलकत्ता हाईकोर्ट के न्यायधीश सौमित्र सेन पर महाभियोग चला। 2009 में इसी दिन संयुक्त राष्ट्र संघ ने 20 फरवरी को विश्व सामाजिक न्याय दिवस के रुप मनाने की शुरुआत की।

2010 पुर्तगाल के मदीरा द्वीप पर बाढ़ और मूसलिड्स से कम से कम 32 लोगों की मौत हो गई और 68 घायल हो गए।

2013 एस्टोनिया एक राष्ट्रीय इलेक्ट्रिक कार चार्जिंग नेटवर्क स्थापित करने वाला दुनिया का पहला देश बन गया। इस पद्धति से कारों को 30 मिनट से कम समय में चार्ज किया जा सकता है।

2015 स्विटजरलैंड के राफ्ज शहर में दो ट्रेनों की आपस में जोरदार टक्कर से करीब 49 लोगों की जान चली गई।

Kolkata Medical College officially opened with the admission of 1835 students. This college was established on 28 January 1835. It was the second largest medical education center in Asia. It was established by Lord William Bentinck, the head of Britain in India.

After the defeat of the Sikhs in the Battle of Sobron in 1846, the British occupied Lahore.

1847 The Royal Calcutta Turf Club was established.

1868 The first issue of Amrit Bazar Patrika, a Bengali weekly newspaper founded by Sisir Kumar and Motilal Bose, was published. Its first issue as a daily was published on 20 February 1891.

1872 The Metropolitan Museum of Art opened in New York City, USA. It is the largest art museum in the United States with a collection of over two million pieces of art.

1900 Ratanbai (d/o Dinsha Petit and Dinabai), wife of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, founder of Pakistan, was born in Mumbai. According to Wikipedia, he died in England only on 20 February.

1901 Sri Ravu Swetachalapati Sir Ramakrishna Ranga Rao, Raja of Bobbili Zamindari, Andhra Pradesh, was born. Ranga Rao was a British-era Indian politician, jurist, Justice Party leader and landowner who served as the Chief Minister of the Madras Presidency from 5 November 1932 to 4 April 1936 and from 24 August 1936 to 1 April 1937. He also became a member of the Constituent Assembly of India.

1909 Ajay Ghosh was born. He was the leader of the Communist Party of India.

1920 Robert Peary, United States scientist passed away.

1921 Rao Birendra Singh, the last king of a royal family in Haryana, was born. He was a politician and second chief minister of Haryana. He was also a minister in the center.

1932 Famous Kannada playwright K. V. Subanna was born. Famous Indian novelist, short story writer and film director Bhabendra Nath Saikia was born on this day.

1933 German dictator Adolf Hitler secretly meets with German industrialists to support the Nazi Party in the elections.

1934 Swami Sivananda, the second Sangha President of the Ramakrishna Mission, passed away.

1935 Indian National Congress politician and Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh N. Janardhan Reddy was born. On this day in 1935, Caroline Mickelson became the first woman in the world to reach Antarctica.

1936 Arjuna Awardee, eminent footballer Jarnail Singh Dhillon, was born.

1942 Japanese troops attack Bali in the Dutch East Indies during World War II.

1946 Pankaj Bisht, eminent Hindi journalist, story writer, novelist, critic and editor-publisher of Samyantar magazine, was born in Naugaon, Almora.

1946 Vijaya Nirmala, famous Telugu film actress, model, film director, producer, was born.

1947 British Prime Minister Clement Attlee announced the independence of India. Attlee had talked about making India independent by 30 June 1948 but it was done only on 15 August 1947. Lord Mountbatten was appointed as the last Viceroy of India on this day in 1947.

1948 Indian Administrative Service officer, KM Chandrasekhar, 29th Chief Secretary to Government of India, was born in Kerala.

1950 Sarat Chandra Bose, elder brother of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and nationalist leader, passed away. On this day, Usha Thorat, India's renowned economist and deputy governor of the Reserve Bank, was born in Madras.

1953 Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, last king of Mysore State (now in Karnataka), politician, fashion designer and Lok Sabha member from Mysuru (now Mysuru), was born in Mysore.

1956 Anu Kapoor, noted Indian film actor and television show presenter, was born.

1962 John H. Glenn becomes America's first astronaut. Glenn was the eldest of seven people selected by the US space agency NASA for Project Mercury.

Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi was born in 1964 in Delhi. He was a member of the National Party and MP in New Zealand.

1965 Ranger eight launched by NASA (US government space agency - National Aeronautics Space Administration) landed on the moon and sent pictures and information from there.

1968 Mumbai's K.E.M. Doctor of the hospital P.K. Sen performed the first heart transplant operation in India.

1972 Anvita Dutt Guptan, well-known Bollywood film story, screenplay, song, dialogue writer and director, was born in Delhi. Eminent Hindi litterateur Shivnarayan Srivastava passed away on this day.

1973 Priyanshu Chatterjee, Indian film actor, was born.

In 1975, Margaret Thatcher was elected leader of the British Conservative Party in London. Later she was a very influential Prime Minister of Britain.

1976 Commercial scale production of crude oil started at Mumbai High. Cricketer Rohan Gavaskar was born on this day.

1982 Agreement on Kanhar river water between Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.

In 1983, large-scale violence took place ahead of the assembly elections in Assam. 600 people died in this.

Renowned Hindi poet, writer and Gandhian thinker Bhavani Prasad Mishra, who received the 1985 Sahitya Akademi Award, passed away. On this day in 1986, the Soviet Union launched Mir (peace), a more developed space station than Salyut-7.

1987 Himachal Pradesh was made the 24th state of the Indian Union. Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh were inaugurated as the 23rd and 24th states respectively.

1988 Bollywood's beautiful, bold actress Jiah Khan was born in New York, the commercial capital of America. Jia, who acted in many films like Ghajini, Nishabd and Housefull, committed suicide on 3 June 2013 in Mumbai.

1988: Flooding in Rio de Janeiro, the capital of Brazil, kills 65 people and leaves more than 100 people missing in a hospital. On this day in 1988, the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast voted to secede from Azerbaijan and join Armenia, starting the Nagorno-Karabakh War.

1989 Patralekha Paul, famous model and actress, was born in Shillong. On this day in 1989, a barrack of the British Army in Turnhill was destroyed in an explosion by the Irish Republican Army fighting for Ireland's independence from Britain.

1999 New Zealand's famous football player Sarpreet Singh was born in Auckland. On the same day Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee left for Pakistan by bus. On this day in 1999, Doordarshan, India's official broadcasting service, started the sports channel.

2000 British writer of Indian origin Salman Rushdie announced to leave Britain and settle in New York.

2001 Lithuania's President Adamkus reached India, three agreements were signed between the two countries. Indrajit Gupta, a senior CPI leader and agriculture minister at the Center, passed away on this day.

2003 The Station Rock Club fire in Rhode Island kills nearly 100 people.

In 2007, the European Union agreed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20 percent by 2010.

The offset policy was approved in the 2008 defense deal. On the same day, four public sector banks led by State Bank of India cut prime lending rates by 0.25 - 0.50 percent. On the same day, US presidential candidate Barack Hussein Obama registered his ninth victory.
