1901 यूनाइटेड किंगडम की महारानी विक्टोरिया का अंतिम संस्कार हुआ।

1902 दक्षिण भारत में हिंदी प्रचार आन्दोलन के संगठक मोटूरि सत्यनारायण का जन्म हुआ

1905 रूस के विश्व विख्यात उपन्यसकार, दार्शनिक और पटकथाकार लेखक एयन रैंड का जन्म सेंटपीटर्सबर्ग में हुआ।

1907 रुसी वैज्ञानिक दिमित्री ऐवेनोविच मेंडलिफ का 73 वर्ष की आयु में सेंटपीटर्जबर्ग में निधन हुआ। उन्होंने पृथ्वी पर मौजूद रसायनिक तत्वों की सुव्यवस्थित सूची बनाई।

1913 अमेरिका के प्रमुख वाणिज्यिक नगर न्यूयार्क में ग्रैंड सेंट्रल टर्मिनल की ओपनिंग हुई।



1914 विश्व विख्यात फिल्मकार और अभिनेता चार्ली चैप्लिन (सर चार्ल्स स्पेन्सर चैप्लिन) की पहली फिल्म मेकिंग अ लिविंग रिलीज हुई। फिल्म में चार्ली ने एक ठग की भूमिका निभाई थी। हेनरी लेहरमन इस फिल्म के लखक और निर्देशक थे। 15 मिनट की यह कॉमेड फिल्म पूरी तरह से साइलेंट मूवी थी, मतलब इसमें आवाज नहीं थी, सिर्फ एक्शन और एक्सप्रेशन था। फिल्म में चार्ली ने अपनी एक्टिंग से लोगों को खूब हंसाया था। चार्ली का जन्म लंदन में 16 अप्रैल 1889 को हुआ था। उनका बचपन काफी मुश्किलों और गरीबी से भरा हुआ था। पिता शराबी और बच्चों के प्रति लापरवाह थे। गरीबी से संघर्ष करते-करते मां पागलपन की शिकार हो गई थीं। चार्ली को सात साल की उम्र में एक आश्रम में जाना पड़ा था। स्कूल से पढ़ाई छूटने के बाद वे 13 साल की उम्र में मनोरंजन की दुनिया में आए। डांस के साथ उन्होंने स्टेज नाटकों में भी हिस्सा लेना शुरू किया। उनका अंदाजे बयां देखकर उन्हें एक अमेरिकी फिल्म स्टूडियो के लिए चुना गया। यहां काम करने के कुछ दिनों के भीतर ही चार्ली दुनिया भर में मूक फिल्मों के बादशाह के रूप में उभरे। उनकी फुल टाइम फिल्म 1921 में द किड नाम से आई। चार्ली की सर्वाधिक चर्चित फिल्मों में अ वुमन ऑफ पेरिस, द गोल्ड रश, द सर्कस, सिटी लाइट्स, मॉर्डन टाइम्स, द ग्रेट डिक्टेटर रही हैं। आज भी इन फिल्मों को बहुत पसंद किया जाता है। 31 अक्टूबर 1940 को अमेरिका में रिलीज हुई द ग्रेट डिक्टेटर फिल्म में चार्ली चैप्लिन ने एडोल्फ हिटलर का रोल निभाया था। उनके ऊपर कम्युनिस्ट होने के आरोप लगे। कुख्यात अमेरिकी खुफिया एजेंसी फेडरल ब्यूरो आॅफ इंवेस्टिगेशन को उनकी जांच का आदेश दिया गया। सरकार की जनविरोधी नीतियों की आलोचना करने पर उनका अमेरिका में रहना दूभर कर दिया गया। फिर चार्ली स्विट्जरलैंड जाकर बस गए थे। चार्ली ने 4 शादियां की थीं। उनके 11 बच्चे थे। चार्ली के बड़े समर्थकों में संसार के सबसे बड़े वैज्ञानिक अल्बर्ट आइंस्टीन और ब्रिटेन की महारानी थे, जबकि चार्ली चैप्लिन खुद महात्मा गांधी से काफी प्रभावित थे। चार्ली की मौत के बाद उनका शव चोरी हो गया था। बाद में उसे बरामद किया गया। इसके बाद उनका शव 6 फीट की कंक्रीट से बनी कब्र में दफनाया गया था।

1915 भारत के जाने-माने कूटनीतिक, लेखक, अधिवक्ता, कवि और स्तंभकार, पत्रकार खुशवंत सिंह का जन्म हदाली, पाकिस्तान में हुआ। भारत पाकिस्तान बंटवारे के बाद उनका परिवार भारत आ गया। खुशवंत बेहद चर्चित हुए। उन्होंने भारतीय विदेश सेवा में नौकरी की, इलैस्ट्रेटेड वीकली पत्रिका के संपादन सहित अनेक अंग्रेजी पत्रिकाओं, अखबारों में संपादन सेवाएं दीं। उनका ट्रेन टू पाकिस्तान जैसे कई उपन्यास काफी चर्चित हुए। उनके पिता सर शोभा सिंह जाने-माने दिल्ली के बड़े बिल्डर थे, जिन्होंने दिल्ली में अनेक जानी मानी इमारतें बनाईं।

1917 जाने माने हाकी खिलाड़ी किशन लाल का जन्म महू (अब डाॅ. अंबेडकर नगर) में हुआ। बाबासाहेब डाॅ. भीमराव अंबेडकर का जन्म भी इसी नगर में हुआ था।

1922 के. डी. सिंह के नाम से सुपरिचित भारतीय हाॅकी खिलाड़ी कुंवर दिग्विजय सिंह का जन्म बाराबंकी, उत्तर प्रदेश में हुआ। इसी दिन प्रसिद्ध लेखक जेम्स जॉयस का लिखा उपन्यास यूलिसिस पहली बार प्रकाशित किया गया। 1922 में इसी दिन मेघालय के तीसरे मुख्यमंत्री हुए बी. बी. लिंगदोह का जन्म हुआ। वह तीन बार मुख्यमंत्री रहे।

1923 बिहार के प्रमुख कांग्रेस राजनेता और केंद्रीय रेल मंत्री रहे ललित नारायण मिश्रा का जन्म सहरसा बिहार में हुआ।

1925 उत्तराखंड के प्रसिद्ध लोक गायक जीत सिंह नेगी का जन्म हुआ।

1939 हंगरी ने सोवियत संघ के साथ संबंध समाप्त किये।

1943 प्रसिद्ध बरेलवी मुस्लिम धार्मिक विद्वान, बरेलवी मत के संस्थापक मोहम्मद अख्तर रज़ा खान अज़हरी का जन्म बरेली में हुआ।

1947 प्रख्यात अमेरिकी फिल्म अभिनेत्री फराह फॉसेट का जन्म हुआ।

1949 भारत की शीर्ष समाचार सेवा प्रदाता एजेंसी प्रेस ट्रस्ट ऑफ इंडिया पीटीआई की स्थापना की गई। इसी दिन जाने माने भारतीय कृषि विशेषज्ञ और लेखक सुभाष पालेकर का जन्म विदर्भ में हुआ।

1952 भारत ने मद्रास में पहला टेस्ट क्रिकेट जीता। इसी दिन जाने माने दक्षिण भारतीय सिनेमा के निर्देशक, लेखक, नाटककार, अभिनेता पद्मनाभन बालाचंद्रन नायर का जन्म सस्टमकोट्टा में हुआ।

1953 अखिल भारतीय खादी और ग्रामोद्योग बोर्ड का गठन किया गया।

1958 मद्रास के प्रमुख स्वतंत्रता सेनानी बलुसु संबमूर्ति का निधन हुआ।

1960 प्रख्यात हिंदी उपन्यासकार आचार्य चतुरसेन शास्त्री का निधन हुआ।

1961 केंद्र सरकार में अनेक अहम पदों पर रहे भारतीय प्रशासनिक अधिकारी, आधार कार्ड वाली सरकारी एजेंसी यूनीक आइडेंटीफिकेशन अथाॅरिटी आॅफ इंडिया के मुखिया रहे अजय भूषण पांडेय का जन्म हुआ।

1963 जाने माने नाट्य निर्देशक अरविंद गौड़ का जन्म दिल्ली में हुआ।

1966 पाकिस्तान ने कश्मीर समझौते के लिए एक महत्त्वपूर्ण प्रस्ताव पेश किया।

1967 अमेरिकी बास्केटबॉल एसोसिएशन का गठन हुआ।

1968 कर्नाटक के जाने माने भाजपा नेता और कर्नाटक सरकार में मंत्री चिक्कालया नारायणप्पा अश्वथनारायणन का जन्म बंगलौर में हुआ।

1970 आरएसएस की कार्यकर्ता रहीं, भाजपा नेत्री, उग्रपंथी गतिविधियों में जेल में सजा काट चुकी प्रज्ञा सिंह ठाकुर का जन्म हुआ।

1978 प्रसिद्ध मलयाली साहित्यकार गोविंद शंकर कुरुप का निधन हुआ।



1979 जानी मानी भारतीय फिल्म अभिनेत्री और माॅडल शमिता शेट्टी का जन्म हुआ। वे चर्चित अभिनेत्री शिल्पा शेट्टी की बहन हैं। इसी दिन प्रसिद्ध मराठी हिंदी रंगमंच कलाकार, फिल्म अभिनेता, लेखक, निर्देशक चिन्मय मांडलेकर का जन्म बंबई में हुआ। विवादास्पद फिल्म द कश्मीर फाइल्स में भी उन्होंने काम किया है। इसी दिन निरहुआ के नाम से मशहूर भोजपुरी फिल्म अभिनेता, गायक और भाजपा नेता दिनेश लाल यादव का जन्म गाज़ीपुर उत्तर प्रदेश में हुआ। 

1982 सीरिया ने मध्य पश्चिम क्षेत्र में ओरोंटेस नदी के किनारे स्थित शहर हामा पर आक्रमण किया। इसी दिन प्रसिद्ध राजनीतिज्ञ तथा राजस्थान के मुख्यमंत्री मोहन लाल सुखाड़िया का निधन हुआ।



1987 जानी मानी खूबसूरत, बोल्ड मराठी फिल्म अभिनेत्री, माॅडल, नृत्यांग्ना एवं स्टेज शो परफाॅर्मर मानसी नाइक का जन्म हुआ।



1989 खूबसूरत, बोल्ड, जानी-मानी माॅडल और अभिनेत्री संदीपा धर का जन्म श्रीनगर, जम्मू में हुआ।

1990 अफ्रीकी नेशनल कांग्रेस पर 30 साल से लगा प्रतिबंध हटाया गया और इसके कुछ दिनों बाद काले लोगों के लोकप्रिय नेता नेल्सन मंडेला को 27 साल बाद जेल से रिहा किया गया।

1992 अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति जार्ज बुश एवं रूसी राष्ट्रपति बोरिस येल्तसिन द्वारा शीत युद्ध की समाप्ति की घोषणा।

1997 चीन तथा अमेरिका के बीच वस्त्र व्यापार विवाद समाप्त करने के लिए समझौता हुआ।

1999 विश्व विख्यात जुझारू जन नेता और अमेरिका के कटु आलोचक ह्यूगो चावेज वेनेजुएला के राष्ट्रपति बने। लंबे समय तक कैंसर से जूझने वाले इस जिंदादिल इंसान की 5 मार्च 2013 को मौत हो गई। इसी दिन आस्ट्रेलियाई कप्तान मार्क टेलर ने अंतर्राष्ट्रीय क्रिकेट से सन्न्यास का ऐलान किया।

2001 भारतीय नौसेना के सी किंग हेलिकाप्टरों के लिए अमेरिकी कलपुर्जों की बिक्री को अनुमति मिली।

2002 अमेरिकी पत्रकार डेनियल पर्ल के अपहरण के मामले में पाकिस्तान के तीन व्यक्ति गिरफ्तार।

2004 विख्यात स्विस टेनिस खिलाड़ी रोजर फेडरर 237 हफ्तों तक लगातार पहली रैकिंग पर रिकॉर्ड बनाया।

2006 राष्ट्रीय ग्रामीण रोजगार गारंटी योजना नरेगा अधिनियम 200 जिलों के लिए अधिसूचित किया गया।

2007 जलवायु परिवर्तन पर अंतर्राष्ट्रीय पैनल आईपीसीसी ने ग्लोबल वार्मिंग पर रिपोर्ट प्रस्तुत की। इसी दिन प्रसिद्ध भारतीय फिल्म व टेलीविजन अभिनेता विजय अरोड़ा का निधन हुआ।

2008 राष्ट्रपति प्रतिभा देवी सिंह पाटिल ने कर्नाटक की पहली लक्जरी ट्रेन गोल्डन चैरियट को हरी झंडी दिखाकर रवाना किया। उत्तराखंड के राज्यपाल बी. एल. जोशी ने बी. के. गुप्ता को उत्तराखंड उच्च न्यायालय के मुख्य न्यायधीश की शपथ दिलाई। इसी दिन केन्या में शान्ति स्थापित करने के लिए विपक्ष के बीच समझौता हुआ। इसी दिन दुबई के शासक शेख मुहम्मद बिन राशिद अल मखदूम ने अपने पुत्र शेख हमदान को अपने उत्तराधिकारी के रूप में शाहजादा घोषित किया। इसी दिन पाकिस्तान के इतिहास में पहली बार सिक्ख विवाह अधिनियम अध्यादेश लागू हुआ।

2011 भारत के प्रमुख रक्षा विश्लेषक कृष्णस्वामी सुब्रह्मण्यम का निधन हुआ।

2012 सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने 122 संस्थाओं को 2 जी स्पैक्ट्रम के आवंटन को अवैध घोषित किया।

2013 अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति बराक हुसैन ओबामा ने एक आप्रवासी वैज्ञानिक को पुरस्कृत किया, जिसने पीआरके और लेसिक लेजर अपवर्तक सर्जिकल तकनीकों के लिए मार्ग प्रशस्त किया था।

2016 प्रख्यात पाकिस्तानी उपन्यासकार इंतजार हुसैन का निधन हुआ।

1907 Russian scientist Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev died at the age of 73 in St.Petersburg. He made a systematic list of chemical elements present on the earth.

1913 Grand Central Terminal opened in New York, the major commercial city of America.

1914 Making a Living, the first film of world-renowned filmmaker and actor Charlie Chaplin (Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin), was released. Charlie played the role of a thug in the film. Henry Lehrman was the writer and director of this film. This 15-minute comedy film was a completely silent movie, meaning there was no sound, only action and expression. In the film, Charlie made people laugh a lot with his acting. Charlie was born on 16 April 1889 in London. His childhood was full of hardships and poverty. The father was an alcoholic and careless towards the children. Mother had become a victim of insanity while struggling with poverty. Charlie had to go to an ashram at the age of seven. After dropping out of school, he entered the world of entertainment at the age of 13. Along with dance, he also started participating in stage plays. Seeing his prowess, he was selected for an American film studio. Within a few days of working here, Charlie emerged as the king of silent films around the world. His full time film came in 1921 with the name The Kid. Charlie's most famous films have been A Woman of Paris, The Gold Rush, The Circus, City Lights, Modern Times, The Great Dictator. Even today these films are very much liked. Charlie Chaplin played the role of Adolf Hitler in the film The Great Dictator released in America on 31 October 1940. He was accused of being a communist. The infamous American intelligence agency Federal Bureau of Investigation was ordered to investigate them. Criticizing the anti-people policies of the government, his stay in America was made difficult. Then Charlie had settled in Switzerland. Charlie had done 4 marriages. He had 11 children. Among Charlie's big supporters were the world's greatest scientist Albert Einstein and the Queen of Britain, while Charlie Chaplin himself was heavily influenced by Mahatma Gandhi. After Charlie's death, his body was stolen. He was later recovered. After this his body was buried in a 6 feet concrete grave.

1915 Khushwant Singh, noted Indian diplomat, writer, advocate, poet and columnist, journalist, was born in Hadali, Pakistan. After the partition of India-Pakistan, his family moved to India. Khushwant became very popular. He worked in the Indian Foreign Service, provided editing services in many English magazines, newspapers including the editing of the Illustrated Weekly magazine. Many of his novels like Train to Pakistan became very popular. His father Sir Shobha Singh was a well-known builder of Delhi, who built many famous buildings in Delhi.

1917 Famous hockey player Kishan Lal was born in Mhow (now Dr. Ambedkar Nagar). Babasaheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar was also born in this city.

1922 k. Indian hockey player Kunwar Digvijay Singh, better known as D. Singh, was born in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh. On this day the novel Ulysses written by famous writer James Joyce was published for the first time. On this day in 1922, the third Chief Minister of Meghalaya, B. B. Lyngdoh was born. He was the chief minister thrice.

1923 Lalit Narayan Mishra, prominent Congress politician from Bihar and Union Railway Minister, was born in Saharsa, Bihar.

1925 Jit Singh Negi, famous folk singer of Uttarakhand, was born.

1939 Hungary ends relations with the Soviet Union.

1943 Mohammad Akhtar Raza Khan Azhari, founder of the Barelvi school, noted Barelvi Muslim religious scholar, was born in Bareilly.

1947 Farrah Fawcett, noted American film actress, was born.

1949 India's top news service provider agency Press Trust of India PTI was established. On this day renowned Indian agricultural expert and writer Subhash Palekar was born in Vidarbha.

1952 India won the first Test cricket at Madras. On this day noted South Indian cinema director, writer, playwright, actor Padmanabhan Balachandran Nair was born in Systemkotta.

1953 All India Khadi and Village Industries Board was formed.

1958 Balusu Sambamurthy, prominent freedom fighter of Madras, passed away.

1960 Acharya Chatursen Shastri, eminent Hindi novelist, passed away.

1961 Ajay Bhushan Pandey, an Indian administrative officer who held many important positions in the central government, and who headed the Unique Identification Authority of India, the government agency that issued Aadhaar cards, was born.

1963 Arvind Gaur, noted theater director, was born in Delhi.

1966 Pakistan presented an important proposal for the Kashmir Accord.

1967 The American Basketball Association is formed.

1968 Chikkalaya Narayanappa Ashwathnarayanan, well-known BJP leader of Karnataka and Minister in Government of Karnataka, was born in Bangalore.

1970 Pragya Singh Thakur, RSS worker, BJP leader, who served jail term for extremist activities, was born.

1978 Govind Shankar Kurup, famous Malayalam litterateur, passed away.

1979 Shamita Shetty, noted Indian film actress and model, was born. She is the sister of famous actress Shilpa Shetty. On this day famous Marathi Hindi theater artist, film actor, writer, director Chinmay Mandlekar was born in Bombay. He has also acted in the controversial film The Kashmir Files. On this day, Bhojpuri film actor, singer and BJP leader Dinesh Lal Yadav, popularly known as Nirhua, was born in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh.

1982 Syria invades Hama, a city on the banks of the Orontes River in the Midwest region. On this day famous politician and Chief Minister of Rajasthan Mohan Lal Sukhadia passed away.

1987 Mansi Naik, well-known beautiful, bold Marathi film actress, model, dancer and stage show performer, was born.

1989 Beautiful, bold, well-known model and actress Sandeepa Dhar was born in Srinagar, Jammu.

1990 A 30-year ban on the African National Congress is lifted, and a few days later, Nelson Mandela, a popular black leader, is released from prison after 27 years.

2008 President Pratibha Devisingh Patil flagged off the Golden Chariot, Karnataka's first luxury train. Uttarakhand Governor B. Ale. Joshi did B.Sc. Of. Gupta was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court. On this day an agreement was reached between the opposition to establish peace in Kenya. On the same day, Sheikh Muhammad bin Rashid Al Makhdoom, the ruler of Dubai, declared his son Sheikh Hamdan as his successor as crown prince. On this day, for the first time in the history of Pakistan, the Sikh Marriage Act Ordinance came into force.
