1592 गुरुवार के दिन मुगल शासक अकबर के बेटे शहजादे सलीम यानी नूरुद्दीन मोहम्मद सलीम जहांगीर की बेगम यानी पत्नी नूर जहां ने एक बेटे को जन्म दिया। जहांगीर ने अपने पिता अकबर से उसके बेटे का नाम रखने की इच्छा जताई। अकबर ने उसे खुर्रम बुलाया। फारसी में खुर्रम का मतलब होता है खुशी। पैदाइश के छठवें दिन खुर्रम को अकबर की बेगम रुकैया के हवाले कर दिया गया। क्योंकि बेगम रुकैया की कोई संतान नहीं थी, इसलिए उसने खुर्रम को गोद ले लिया। अकबर खुर्रम के दादा थे। खुद अनपढ़ थे, लेकिन उन्होंने खुर्रम को तालीम दिलवाने में कोई कसर नहीं छोड़ी। साथ ही बढ़िया उस्तादों से उसे जंग के हुनर भी सिखवाए। अकबर का खुर्रम से इतना लगाव हो गया था कि वो जंग में खुर्रम को भी साथ ले जाने लगे। यहीं से सफर शुरू हुआ खुर्रम के शाहजहां बनने का। वैसे उनका नाम सहाब उद्दीन मोहम्मद खुर्रम हुआ।

खुर्रम के पिता जहांगीर की 1627 में मृत्यु हो गई। उसकी मौत के बाद 1628 में खुर्रम ने तख्त संभाला। तख्त संभालने के बाद खुर्रम का नाम शाहजहां हो गया। शाहजहां यानी दुनिया का राजा। शाहजहां ने उत्तर दिशा में कंधार तक अपना राज्य फैला दिया और दक्षिण भारत का ज्यादातर हिस्सा जीत लिया। शाहजहां ने 1658 तक राज किया और इन 30 सालों के राज में उसने काफी कुछ हासिल किया। जहांगीर के दौर में वजीर थे एतमाउद्दौला। इन्हीं एतमाउद्दौला के बेटे थे अबु हसन आसफ खान। और इन्हीं अबु हसन आसफ खान की बेटी थीं अर्जुमंद बानो। अर्जुमंद बानो जिन्हें बाद में मुमताज महल के नाम से जाना गया। मुमताज शाहजहां की तीसरी पत्नी थी। इससे पहले शाहजहां की दो और बेगम थीं।

अप्रैल 1607 में 14 साल की अर्जुमंद और 15 साल के खुर्रम की सगाई हुई। फिर 10 मई 1612 को सगाई के करीब 5 साल बाद दोनों का निकाह हुआ। अर्जुमंद से सगाई और निकाह के बीच खुर्रम ने दो और शादियां की थीं। मुमताज और शाहजहां के बीच बहुत ज्यादा मोहब्बत थी। दोनों के 13 बच्चे हुए। निकाह से लेकर मौत तक मुमताज करीब हर साल गर्भवती रहीं। जून 1631 में 14वें बच्चे को जन्म देने के दौरान मुमताज की मौत हो गई। ऐसा बताया जाता है कि मुमताज की मौत के दो साल बाद तक शाहजहां ने भोग विलास के सारे सुख छोड़ दिए थे। उनके बाल-दाढ़ी बढ़ गए थे।

शाहजहां को वास्तुकारो का राजा भी कहा जाता है। उसने अपने शासनकाल में बहुत सी इमारतें बनवाईं। इन्हीं इमारतों में से एक ताजमहल है। 1631 में जब मुमताज की मौत हो गई, तो शाहजहां ने उसके मकबरे के लिए ताजमहल बनवाया।

ताजमहल के मुख्य डिजायनर थे उस्ताद ईशा खान, जो उस समय के मशहूर आर्किटेक्ट थे। ताजमहल बनाने में फारस और तुर्की के अलावा भारत के 20 हजार मजदूरों ने काम किया। एक हजार हाथी तो सिर्फ माल ढोने के लिए लगे थे। ताजमहल तामीर होने में करीब 22 साल का वक्त लगा। 1631 में शुरू हुआ इसका निर्माण कार्य 1653 में पूरा हुआ। ताजमहल के पीछे शाहजहां काला ताज भी बनाना चाहते थे, लेकिन अपने बेटे औरंगजेब के साथ उनका टकराव शुरू हो गया। 22 जनवरी 1966 को आगरा में शाहजहां की मौत हो गई।

1659 खाजवाह की लड़ाई में औरंगजेब ने शाहशुजा को पराजित किया।

1666 सिखों के दसवें गुरु गोविन्द सिंह का जन्म हुआ।

1691 यूरोप में पहली बार कागजी मुद्रा स्वीडन के बैंक ने जारी की। इससे पहले तक स्वीडन में सिक्का चलता था जो चौकोर और बड़े आकार का होता था।

1671 छत्रपति शिवाजी ने मुगलों से सल्हर क्षेत्र को अपने कब्जे में किया।

1731 मास्को शहर में पहली बार स्ट्रीट लाइट जलायी गई।

1850 अमेरिका में कैलिफोर्निया स्टॉक एक्सचेंज की शुरूआत हुई थी।

1880 प्रसिद्ध स्वतंत्रता सेनानी तथा पत्रकार बारींद्र कुमार घोष का जन्म हुआ।

1893 प्रसिद्ध आध्यात्मिक गुरू योगानंद का जन्म गोरखपुर, उत्तर प्रदेश में हुआ।

1900 आयरलैंड के राष्ट्रवादी नेता जाॅन एडवर्ड रेडमोंड ने ब्रिटिश शासन के खिलाफ विद्रोह किया।

1905 प्रख्यात बौद्ध विद्वान, समाज सुधारक, लेखक तथा पालि भाषा के मूर्धन्य विद्वान भदंत आनन्द कौसल्यायन का जन्म हुआ।

1905 चार्ल्स पेरीन ने बृहस्पति ग्रह के सातवें उपग्रह इलारा के खोज की घोषणा की।

1909 कोलंबिया, पनामा और अमेरिका के बीच में पनामा को स्वतंत्र राज्य बनाने का समझौता हुआ।

1914 अमेरिकी कंपनी फोर्ड ने पहली बार कर्मचारियों का एक दिन का भत्ता पांच डॉलर देने की सीमा निर्धारित करके दुनिया के सामने न्यूनतम वेतन का उदाहरण पेश किया। फोर्ड मोटर कंपनी ने 5 दिन की दैनिक मजदूरी के साथ आठ घंटे की कार्यदिवस की घोषणा की।

1922 मुकरी के नाम से मशहूर हिंदी फिल्मों के लोकप्रिय हास्य अभिनेता मोहम्मद उमर मुकरी का जन्म अलीबाग में हुआ। इन्होंने अपने स्कूल के साथी दिलीप कुमार के साथ 1945 में फिल्म प्रतिमा से अभिनय यात्रा की शुरुआत की।

1932 प्रमुख भाजपा नेता, उत्तर प्रदेश के मुख्यमंत्री और राजस्थान के राज्यपाल रहे कल्याण सिंह का अतरौली में जन्म हुआ।

1934 भारतीय जनता पार्टी के नेता मुरली मनोहर जोशी का नैनीताल में जन्म हुआ। इन्हें और कई अन्य वरिष्ठ नेताओं को नरेंद्र मोदी ने सत्ता अपने हाथ में लेने के बाद सार्वजनिक राजनीति से लगभग रिटायर कर दिया।

1941 भारत के बहुप्रतिष्ठित क्रिकेटर मंसूर अली खान पटौदी का भोपाल में जन्म हुआ।

1952 जाने माने भाजपा नेता और बिहार में उप मुख्यमंत्री रहे सुशील मोदी का जन्म पटना में हुआ। इसी दिन ब्रिटेन के प्रधानमंत्री विंस्टन चर्चिल निर्वाचित होने के बाद अमेरिका के पहले आधिकारिक दौरे पर वाॅशिंगटन पहुँचे।

1955 पश्चिम बंगाल की मुख्यमंत्री ममता बनर्जी का कलकत्ता में जन्म हुआ।

केंद्रीय ब्रिकी कर अधिनियम 1957 में प्रभाव में आया।

1961 अमेरिका ने क्यूबा से राजनयिक संबंध खत्म किये। क्योंकि क्यूबा ने अमेरिका की विस्तारवादी नीतियों का विरोध किया था।

1968 तमिलनाडु के प्रमुख राजनेता हुए एम करुणानिधि की बेटी डीएमके नेता, पत्रकार, कवियत्रि और लोकसभा सदस्य कनिमोझी का जन्म मद्रास में हुआ।

1971 भारत की जानी मानी हेयर स्टाइलिस्ट या केश सज्जाकार और माॅडल सपना भवनानी का बंबई में जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन क्रिकेट इतिहास का पहला वनडे खेला गया। मेलबर्न में खेले गए इस मैच में ऑस्ट्रेलिया ने इंग्लैंड को 5 विकेट से हराया। इंग्लैंड ने टॉस हारकर पहले बल्लेबाजी करते हुए 190 रन बनाए थे। ऑस्ट्रेलिया ने 5 विकेट गंवाकर 191 रन बनाते हुए मैच जीत लिया था।

1972 बांग्लादेश के नेता शेख मुजीबुर रहमान को नजरबंदी से आजाद कर दिया गया।

1974 जानी मानी, खूबसूरत, बोल्ड माॅडल और अभिनेत्री मालिनी शर्मा का दिल्ली में जन्म हुआ।

1981 डगलस एडम्स की किताब द हिचहाइकर, गाइड टू द गैलेक्सी का पहला टीवी रूपांतरण बीबीसी टू पर शुरू किया गया।

1982 जानी मानी, खूबसूरत, बोल्ड ट्रांसजेंडर भारतीय अमेरिकी अभिनेत्री, माॅडल और ट्रांसजेंडर अधिकार कार्यकत्री अनीश शेठ का पुणे में जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन हिंदी फिल्मों के विख्यात संगीतकार, गायक और निर्माता-निर्देशक सी. रामचन्द्र का निधन हुआ।

1986 दुनिया भर में अपनी खूबसूरती और अभिनय प्रतिभा के लिए प्रतिष्ठित भारतीय फिल्म अभिनेत्री दीपिका पादुकोण का जन्म डेनमार्क की राजधानी कोपेनहेगन में हुआ। माता-पिता उज्जवला और प्रकाश पादुकोण। प्रकाश पादुकोण अंतरराष्ट्रीय बैडमिंटन खिलाड़ी हुए हैं।

1990 प्रख्यात भारतीय फिल्मकार रमेश बहल का निधन।

1994 अलेक्जेंडर पोपोव ने फ्रीस्टाइल (47.82) 100 मीटर तैराकी में विश्व रिकॉर्ड बनाया।

1996 फिलिस्तीनी उग्रपंथी संगठन हमास के संचालक याहया अय्याश की हत्या एक बम से लैस फोन से की गई थी, जिसे इजरायल की शिन बेट ने लगाया।

1997 प्रसिद्ध शो शो बोट गेर्शविन थिएटर न्यूयॉर्क शहर में बंद हुआ।

2000 अंतर्राष्ट्रीय फुटबाल एवं सांख्यिकी महासंघ ने महान फुटबाॅलर पेले को शताब्दी का सर्वश्रेष्ठ खिलाड़ी घोषित किया।

2002 दक्षेस शिखर सम्मेलन काठमाण्डू में शुरू हुआ, उद्घाटन सत्र में पाकिस्तान के राष्ट्रपति परवेज मुशर्रफ ने भारत के साथ दोस्ती का हाथ बढ़ाया पर भारतीय प्रधानमंत्री अटल बिहारी वाजपेयी ने कहा- भरोसे के लायक नहीं।

2003 अल्जीरिया में हुए विद्रोहियों के हमले में 43 सैनिक मरे।

2006 भारत और नेपाल ने पारगमन संधि की अवधि को 3 महीने के लिए बढ़ाया।

2007 तंजानिया की विदेश मंत्री आशा रोज मिगरो संयुक्त राष्ट्र की उप महासचिव नियुक्त हुईं।

2008 यूरोपीय संघ ने पाकिस्तान में चुनाव पर्यवेक्षण अभियान शुरू किया। इसी दिन उत्तर प्रदेश में वैट अध्यादेश लागू होने के आद उत्तर प्रदेश व्यापार कर एक्ट, 1948 समाप्त किया गया। इसी दिन भारतीय स्टील प्राधिकरण लिमिटेड के लौह एवं स्टील अनुसंथान एवं विकास केन्द्र को वर्ष 2008 का गोल्डन पीकाक इनोवेटिव प्रोडक्ट्स सर्विस पुरस्कार के लिए चुना गया। इसी दिन पाकिस्तान के सूबा-ए-सरहद प्रांत के गवर्नर ने अपने पद से इस्तीफा दिया। 

2009 नेशनल कांफेंस के अध्यक्ष उमर अब्दुल्ला ने जम्मू-कश्मीर के ये मुख्यमंत्री पद की शपथ ली।

2010 हरित राजस्थान अभियान के तहत डूंगरपुर जिला प्रशासन द्वारा जिले भर में फैली बंजर पहाड़ियों की हरितिमा लौटाने के लिए 11 अगस्त व 12 अगस्त, 2009 को किए गए 6 लाख से अधिक पौधारोपण की मुहिम को गिनीज बुक ऑफ वर्ल्ड रिकॉर्ड में सम्मिलित कर लिया गया।

2011 ब्रिटिश राजकुमार विलियम और उनकी दुल्हन केट यानी कैथरीन मिडलटन के विवाह की घोषणा कैंटरबरी के आर्कबिशप द्वारा की गई।

2014 भारतीय संचार उपग्रह जीसैट-14 को सफलतापूर्वक कक्षा में स्थापित किया गया। जीसैट -14 में भारत में निर्मित क्रायोजेनिक इंजन का इस्तेमाल हुआ था।

2020 न्यूजीलैंड के बल्लेबाज लियो कार्टर ने एक ओवर में छह छक्के लगाए। यह कीर्तिमान बनाकर विश्व के सातवें बल्लेबाज के रूप में उन्होंने क्रिकेट इतिहास में अपना नाम दर्ज कराया। कार्टर के अलावा अब तक वेस्टइंडीज के गैरी सोबर्स, भारत के रवि शास्त्री और युवराज सिंह, दक्षिण अफ्रीका के हर्शल गिब्स, इंग्लैंड के रॉस विटाली और अफगानिस्तान के हजरतुल्ला जजई ने एक ओवर में छह छक्के लगाये हैं। इसी दिन भारत के विदेशी मुद्रा भंडार ने 457.468 बिलियन के उच्च स्तर को छुआ।

On Thursday, 1592, Mughal ruler Akbar's son Shahzade Salim i.e. Nooruddin Mohammad Salim Jahangir's Begum i.e. wife Noor Jahan gave birth to a son. Jahangir expressed his desire to his father Akbar to name his son. Akbar called him Khurram. Khurram means happiness in Farsi. Khurram was handed over to Akbar's wife Ruqaiya on the sixth day of his birth. Since Begum Ruqaiya had no children, she adopted Khurram. Akbar was the grandfather of Khurram. He himself was illiterate, but he left no stone unturned to get Khurram trained. Also taught him the skills of war from good masters. Akbar was so attached to Khurram that he started taking Khurram along with him in the war. The journey of Khurram to become Shahjahan started from here. By the way, his name was Sahab Uddin Mohammad Khurram.

Khurram's father Jahangir died in 1627. After his death in 1628, Khurram assumed the throne. After assuming the throne, Khurram's name became Shahjahan. Shahjahan means the king of the world. Shah Jahan extended his kingdom in the north up to Kandahar and conquered most of South India. Shah Jahan ruled till 1658 and he achieved a lot in these 30 years of rule. Etmauddaulah was the Wazir during the reign of Jahangir. Abu Hasan Asaf Khan was the son of this Etmauddaulah. And Arjumand Bano was the daughter of this Abu Hasan Asaf Khan. Arjumand Bano who was later known as Mumtaz Mahal. Mumtaz was the third wife of Shah Jahan. Before this, Shah Jahan had two more wives.

In April 1607, 14 year old Arjumand and 15 year old Khurram got engaged. Then on May 10, 1612, after about 5 years of engagement, both of them got married. Between the engagement and marriage with Arjumand, Khurram did two more marriages. There was a lot of love between Mumtaz and Shahjahan. Both had 13 children. From marriage till death, Mumtaz remained pregnant almost every year. Mumtaz died in June 1631 while giving birth to her 14th child. It is said that till two years after the death of Mumtaz, Shah Jahan had given up all the pleasures of Bhog Vilas. His hair and beard had grown.

Shah Jahan is also known as the king of architects. He made many buildings during his reign. One of these buildings is the Taj Mahal. When Mumtaz died in 1631, Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal for her tomb.

The chief designer of Taj Mahal was Ustad Isha Khan, who was a famous architect of that time. Apart from Persia and Turkey, 20 thousand laborers from India worked in making the Taj Mahal. One thousand elephants were engaged only to carry the goods. It took about 22 years to build the Taj Mahal. Its construction work started in 1631 was completed in 1653. Shah Jahan also wanted to build the Black Taj behind the Taj Mahal, but his conflict with his son Aurangzeb started. Shah Jahan died on 22 January 1966 in Agra.

Aurangzeb defeated Shah Shuja in the Battle of Khajwah in 1659.

1880 Barindra Kumar Ghosh, famous freedom fighter and journalist, was born.

1893 Yogananda, famous spiritual leader, was born in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.

1900 Irish nationalist leader John Edward Redmond revolts against British rule.

1905 Bhadanta Anand Kausalyayan, eminent Buddhist scholar, social reformer, writer and eminent scholar of Pali language, was born.

1905 Charles Perrin announces the discovery of Jupiter's seventh moon, Elara.

In 1909, an agreement was reached between Colombia, Panama and the US to make Panama an independent state.

1914 American company Ford for the first time presented an example of minimum wage in front of the world by setting a limit of five dollars a day allowance to the employees. The Ford Motor Company announced an eight-hour workday with a 5-day daily wage.

1922 Mohammad Umar Mukri, popular comedian of Hindi films, known as Mukri, was born in Alibaug. He made his acting debut in 1945 with the film Pratima along with his schoolmate Dilip Kumar.

1932 Kalyan Singh, prominent BJP leader, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and Governor of Rajasthan, was born in Atrauli.

1934 Bharatiya Janata Party leader Murli Manohar Joshi was born in Nainital. He and many other senior leaders were almost retired from public politics by Narendra Modi after assuming power.

1941 Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, India's most respected cricketer, was born in Bhopal.

1952 Sushil Modi, well-known BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, was born in Patna. On the same day, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill arrived in Washington on his first official visit to America after being elected.

1955 West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was born in Calcutta.

The Central Sales Tax Act came into force in 1957.

1961 America ends diplomatic relations with Cuba. Because Cuba opposed the expansionist policies of America.

1968 DMK leader, journalist, poet and Lok Sabha member Kanimozhi, daughter of M Karunanidhi, prominent Tamil Nadu politician, was born in Madras.

1971 Sapna Bhavnani, Indian hairstylist and model, was born in Bombay. The first ODI in cricket history was played on this day. In this match played in Melbourne, Australia defeated England by 5 wickets. England had scored 190 runs batting first after losing the toss. Australia won the match scoring 191 runs losing 5 wickets.

1972 Bangladesh leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is released from house arrest.

1974 Malini Sharma, well-known, beautiful, bold model and actress, was born in Delhi.

1981 The first TV adaptation of Douglas Adams' book The Hitchhiker, Guide to the Galaxy is launched on BBC Two.

1982 Anish Sheth, a well-known, beautiful, bold transgender Indian-American actress, model, and transgender rights activist, was born in Pune. On this day, noted music composer, singer and producer-director of Hindi films C. Ramchandra passed away.

1986 Indian film actress Deepika Padukone, who is known worldwide for her beauty and acting talent, was born in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. Parents Ujjwala and Prakash Padukone. Prakash Padukone has been an international badminton player.

1990 Renowned Indian filmmaker Ramesh Behl passed away.

1994 Alexander Popov sets world record in swimming 100 meters freestyle (47.82).

1996 Yahya Ayyash, an operative of the Palestinian extremist organization Hamas, is assassinated by a bomb-laden phone planted by Israel's Shin Bet.

1997 The famous show Show Boat closes at the Gershwin Theater in New York City.

2000 The International Federation of Football and Statistics declared the great footballer Pele as the best player of the century.
