1556 चीन के शेन्सी प्रांत में आए जबरदस्त भूकंप में लाखों लोगों की मौत हुई ।

1667 ब्रिटेन और हालैंड के बीच ब्रेडा समझौता हुआ। जिसके तहत हालैंड ने अमरीका महाद्वीप में अपने उपनिवेशों पर नियंत्रण न रख पाने के कारण उन्हें ब्रिटेन के हवाले कर दिया।

1722 एडवर्ड विगलेसवर्थ को प्रथम उत्तरी अमेरिकी दिव्यता प्राध्यापक नियुक्त किया गया।

1742 जर्मन नेताओं ने चार्ल्स सातवे को अल्बर्टा का सम्राट का चुना।

1744 फिलीपींस में दगोहॉय विद्रोह जीयुसेप लैंबरटी की हत्या के साथ शुरू हुआ।

1924 सोवियत संघ में सैंट पीटर्सबर्ग यानी पेट्रोग्राद का नाम बदलकर लेनिनग्राद कर दिया गया। ऐसा दुनिया की महान समाजवादी क्रांति के नेतृत्वकर्ता व्लादीमीर इल्यिच लेनिन की मौत के बाद किया गया। 1924 में इसी दिन बिहार के प्रमुख स्वतंत्रता सेनानी एवं बिहार के मुख्यमंत्री हुए कर्पूरी ठाकुर का जन्म हुआ।

1927 आपकी कसम, आशिक हूं बहारों का, आखिर क्यों ? और आक्रमण जैसी लोकप्रिय फिल्में बनाने वाले मशहूर फिल्मकार जय ओम प्रकाश का जन्म लाहौर में हुआ।

1935 आंध्र प्रदेश के एक नामी संत शिवबाला योगी का जन्म हुआ।

1936 अलबर्ट सैरुएट फ्रांस के प्रधानमंत्री बने।

1939 चिली में आये भूकंप से लगभग 50 हजार लोग मरे।

1943 हिंदी फिल्मों के प्रसिद्ध निर्माता-निर्देशक सुभाष घई का जन्म हुआ।

1947 दिमित्रियो मैक्सिमोज ने एथेंस में राजतंत्रीय सरकार की स्थापना की।

1950 संविधान सभा ने राजेंद्र प्रसाद को भारत का पहला राष्ट्रपति चुना। रबींद्रनाथ टैगोर रचित जन-गण-मन को आधिकारित रूप से 1950 में भारत के राष्ट्रगान का दर्जा दिया गया।

1951 प्रेम माथुर भारत की पहली महिला कमर्शियल पायलट बनीं।

1952 बंबई में पहले अंतरराष्ट्रीय फिल्म महोत्सव का आयोजन हुआ।

1954 भारत के प्रमुख उद्योगपति, कारोबारी वेदांता समूह के मुखिया अनिल अग्रवाल का पटना में जन्म हुआ।

1955 राजीव रंजन सिंह उर्फ ललन सिंह बिहार के प्रमुख नेता, लोकसभा सदस्य और जनता दल यूनाइटेड के अध्यक्ष का पटना में जन्म हुआ।

1958 प्रसिद्ध साहित्यकार चंद्रबली पाण्डेय का निधन हुआ।

1959 भारतीय विदेश सेवा के जाने माने अधिकारी विजय केशव गोखले का जन्म हुआ।

1960 सिंगापुर के प्रमुख बैंकर पीयूष गुप्ता का जन्म मेरठ, उत्तर प्रदेश में हुआ।

1961 हॉलीवुड की सुपर स्टार मर्लिन मुनरो का तीसरे पति आर्थर मिलर से तलाक हुआ दोनों की शादी पांच साल भी नहीं चली। मुनरो को सैक्स सिंबल और अमेरिकी सिनेमा में सैक्स क्रांति लाने वाली अभिनेत्री के तौर पर जाना चाहता है। उनकी खूबसूरती के दीवाने राष्ट्रपति जाॅन फिटजेराल्ड कैनेडी से लेकर दुनिया भर के करोड़ों लोग थे।

1965 ब्रिटेन के प्रधानमंत्री विंस्टन चर्चिल का निधन हुआ।

1966 एयर इंडिया का बोइंग आल्पस में दुर्घटनाग्रस्त हुआ जिसमें डॉ. होमी भाभा सहित 117 लोग मारे गये। भाभा का जन्म 30 अक्टूबर 1909 को मुंबई के एक अमीर पारसी परिवार में हुआ था। भाभा न केवल वैज्ञानिक थे, बल्कि बहुमुखी प्रतिभा संपन्न व्यक्ति थे। नोबेल पुरस्कार विजेता सीवी रमन उन्हें भारत का लियोनार्दो द विंची कहकर बुलाते थे। 24 जनवरी 1966 को जिस विमान हादसे में उनकी मौत हुई वह मुंबई से न्यूयॉर्क जा रहा था। लेकिन अमेरिका पहुंचने से पहले ही यह विमान यूरोप के आलप्स माउंटेन रेंज में क्रैश हो गया। माना जाता है कि होमी जहांगीर भाभा की मौत के पीछे अमेरिकी खुफिया एजेंसी सीआईए का हाथ था। भारत के न्यूक्लियर एनर्जी प्रोग्राम को रोकने के लिए भाभा की मौत की साजिश रची गई थी। हादसे के 42 साल बाद 2008 में एक दावा किया गया। विदेशी पत्रकार ग्रेगरी डगलस की एक किताब कन्वर्सेशन विद द क्रो में डगलस और सीआईए अफसर रॉबर्ट क्रॉउली के बीच बातचीत का अंश है। इसी में डगलस ने होमी जहांगीर भाभा की मौत के पीछे सीआईए का हाथ होने का दावा किया था। डगलस के मुताबिक 1965 के भारत-पाकिस्तान युद्ध में भारत की जीत से अमेरिका बेचैन हो गया था। भारत की बढ़ती परमाणु ताकत को देखकर अमेरिका की चिंता बढ़ गई थी। सीआईए ऑफिसर रह चुके रॉबर्ट क्रॉउली ने भाभा के प्लेन को बम से उड़ाए जाने की बात कही थी। विमान हादसे के तीन महीने पहले भाभा की एक घोषणा ने दुनिया के बड़े देशों की चिंता बढ़ा दी थी। भाभा ने ऑल इंडिया रेडियो पर घोषणा करते हुए कहा था कि अगर उन्हें छूट मिले, तो वे 18 महीने में एटम बम बनाकर दिखा सकते हैं। होमी जहांगीर भाभा हमेशा देश की सुरक्षा, ऊर्जा, कृषि और औष्धि के क्षेत्र में न्यूक्लियर एनर्जी के डेवलपमेंट का जिक्र करते थे। वे देश के विकास के लिए इसे जरूरी मानते थे। कहते हैं कि अगर उनका विमान क्रैश नहीं होता, तो भारत न्यूक्लियर साइंस के क्षेत्र में कई उपलब्धियां बहुत पहले हासिल कर सकता था। होमी भाभा भारत के पहले प्रधानमंत्री जवाहरलाल नेहरू के काफी नजदीक थे। साथ ही दुनिया के उन चुनिंदा लोगों में से थे जो उन्हें भाई कहकर पुकारते थे। भाभा 1950 से 1966 तक परमाणु ऊर्जा आयोग के अध्यक्ष थे। तब वे भारत सरकार के सचिव भी हुआ करते थे। कहते हैं कि सादगी पसंद भाभा कभी भी अपने चपरासी को अपना ब्रीफकेस नहीं उठाने देते थे।

1971 की 24 जनवरी को पन्नियंकरा, कोझीकोड़ में जन्मी मोनिशा उन्नी ने मलयालम सिनेमा में कम उम्र में अपने अभिनय से खूब नाम कमाया और कई पुरस्कार हासिल किये। 5 दिसंबर 1992 को एक दुर्घटना में उनकी मौत हो गई।

1972 महाराष्ट्र में भाजपा नेता और विधायक राम कदम का जन्म लातूर में हुआ।

1980 कन्नड़ फिल्मों के लोकप्रिय अभिनेता अजय राव का जन्म हुआ।

1981 त्रिपुरा के राजा भरत देव वर्मा के राजघराने में जन्मी रिया सेन जानी मानी फिल्म अभिनेत्री और माॅडल हैं। वे पूर्व अभिनेत्री सुचित्रा सेन की पोती और मुनमुन सेन की बेटी हैं।

1982 जाने माने फिल्मकार महेश भट्ट के बेटे अभिनेता और बाॅडी फिटनेश ट्रेनर राहुल भट्ट का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1983 डी. इम्मान के नाम से मशहूर दक्षिण भारतीय सिनेमा के प्रमुख संगीतकार इमेनुएल वसंत दिनाकरण का मद्रास में जन्म हुआ।

1984 स्टीव जॉब्स की कंपनी एपल ने मैकंटोश कम्यूटर बाजार में उतारा।

1986 जानी मानी खूबसूरत, बोल्ड फिल्म एवं टीवी अभिनेत्री तथा माॅडल रुचा गुजराती का जन्म हुआ।

1989 पेरू में सोने की खान में 125 से अधिक मजदूर फँस गये।

1990 जापान ने पहला लूनर प्रोब लॉन्च किया।

1991 लिथुआनिया गणराज्य ने सोवियत संघ के सैनिकों को हटाने की मांग की।

1993 अंतरिक्ष यान सोयूज टी.एम. 16 प्रक्षेपित किया गया।

1996 अमेरिकी इतिहास में पहली बार देश की प्रथम महिला हिलेरी क्लिंटन को न्यायालय में पेश होने का आदेश दिया गया।

2000 चुनावों में दलितों का आरक्षण 10 वर्ष तक बढ़ाने हेतु संविधान के 79वें संशोधन को राष्ट्रपति की मंजूरी।

2002 संयुक्त राष्ट्र महासचिव कोफी अन्नान इस्लामाबाद पहुँचे, भारत और पाकिस्तान के बीच मध्यस्ता की पेशकश की। भारत में काम कर रही अमेरिकी कंपनी बिजली एनरान के अध्यक्ष केनेथ ली ने इस्तीफा दिया। इसी दिन भारतीय उपग्रह इनसेट-3सी सफलतापूर्वक अपनी कक्षा में स्थापित किया गया।

2003 फ्रांस और भारत के बीच प्रत्यर्पण संधि।

2004 सन 2003 में लॉन्च किए गए रोबोटिक रोवर अपॉर्चुनिटी की मंगल ग्रह पर लैंडिग हुई।

2005 गणतंत्र दिवस समारोह 2005 के मुख्य अतिथि भूटान नरेश जिग्मे सिंघे वांगचुक भारत पहुँचे। इसी दिन आंध्र प्रदेश के तेलगुदेशम के विधायक परिताला रवि की गोली मारकर हत्या करा दी गयी।

2008 उत्तर प्रदेश में सैनिटेशन पॉलिसी के लिए टास्क फोर्स गठित हुई। इसी दिन पूर्व थल सेना अध्यक्ष जे.जे. सिंह को अरुणाचल प्रदेश का राज्यपाल बनाया गया। इसी दिन अफगानिस्तान की एक अदालत ने एक पत्रकार को इस्लाम का अपमान करने के मामले में सजा-ए-मौत की सजा सुनाई। पाकिस्तानी सेना ने दक्षिणी वजीरिस्तान में अफगान सीमा के निकट आतंकवादियों के साथ भीषण संघर्ष में तीन इलाकों को मुक्त कराया।

2008 24 जनवरी को दिन राष्ट्रीय बालिका दिवस मनाने की घोषणा की गई। इस दिन बालिकाओं के हित में चर्चा, परिचर्चा और अन्य कल्याणकारी कार्यों हेतु तय किया गया। इस दिन 1966 में श्रीमती इंदिरा गांधी ने पहली बार भारत के प्रधानमंत्री का पदभार ग्रहण किया गया था इसलिए 24 जनवरी का दिन बालिकाओं को समर्पित बालिका दिवस मनाने का निर्णय लिया गया।

2010 वर्ष 2008 के लिए 56वें राष्ट्रीय फिल्म पुरस्कारों की घोषणा की गई। फिल्म अंतहीन को सर्वश्रेष्ठ फीचर फिल्म, मराठी अभिनेता उपेंद्र लिमये को सर्वश्रेष्ठ अभिनेता और अभिनेत्री प्रियंका चोपड़ा को सर्वश्रेष्ठ अभिनेत्री चुना गया। श्रीबाला को तमिल फिल्म नान कादाउद के लिए सर्वश्रेष्ठ निर्देशक पुरस्कार के लिए चुना गया। फरहान अख्तर की फिल्म रॉक ऑन को सर्वश्रेष्ठ हिंदी फिल्म का राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार मिला।

2011 मॉस्को के डोनोडिडोवो हवाई अड्डे पर हुए बम विस्फोट से 40 लोगों की मौत हुई और 200 से अधिक घायल हुए। 2011 में इसी दिन भारत रत्न से सम्मानित भारत के प्रसिद्ध शास्त्रीय गायक पंडित भीमसेन जोशी का निधन हुआ।

1965 British Prime Minister Winston Churchill passed away.

1966 Air India's Boeing crashed in the Alps, killing 117 people, including Dr. Homi Bhabha. Bhabha was born on 30 October 1909 in a wealthy Parsi family in Mumbai. Bhabha was not only a scientist, but also a man of many talents. Nobel laureate CV Raman used to call him India's Leonardo da Vinci. The plane crash in which he died on 24 January 1966 was going from Mumbai to New York. But before reaching America, this plane crashed in Europe's Alps Mountain Range. It is believed that the American intelligence agency CIA was behind the death of Homi Jehangir Bhabha. Bhabha's death was conspired to stop India's nuclear energy program. A claim was made in 2008, 42 years after the accident. Conversations with the Crow, a book by foreign journalist Gregory Douglas, contains excerpts from a conversation between Douglas and CIA officer Robert Crowley. In this, Douglas claimed the CIA's hand behind the death of Homi Jehangir Bhabha. According to Douglas, the victory of India in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 had made America restless. Seeing the increasing nuclear power of India, America's concern had increased. Robert Crowley, a former CIA officer, had talked about Bhabha's plane being bombed. Three months before the plane crash, an announcement by Bhabha raised the concern of the big countries of the world. Bhabha had announced on All India Radio that if he was given an exemption, he could demonstrate it by making an atom bomb in 18 months. Homi Jehangir Bhabha always used to mention the development of nuclear energy in the field of country's security, energy, agriculture and medicine. He considered it necessary for the development of the country. It is said that if his plane had not crashed, India could have achieved many achievements in the field of nuclear science long back. Homi Bhabha was very close to India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Also, he was among the few people in the world who used to call him brother. Bhabha was the chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission from 1950 to 1966. Then he also used to be the Secretary to the Government of India. It is said that Bhabha, who liked simplicity, never allowed his peon to carry his briefcase.

Born on January 24, 1971 in Panniyankara, Kozhikode, Monisha Unni made a name for herself in Malayalam cinema at a young age and won several awards. He died in an accident on 5 December 1992.

1972 Ram Kadam, BJP leader and MLA in Maharashtra, was born in Latur.

1980 Ajay Rao, popular Kannada film actor, was born.

Riya Sen, born in 1981 in the royal family of King Bharat Dev Varma of Tripura, is a well-known film actress and model. She is the granddaughter of former actress Suchitra Sen and daughter of Moon Moon Sen.

1982 Actor and body fitness trainer Rahul Bhatt, son of noted filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, was born in Bombay.

1983 Emmanuel Vasanth Dhinakaran, prominent composer of South Indian cinema, known as D. Imman, was born in Madras.

1984 Steve Jobs's company Apple launched the Macintosh commuter.

1986 Rucha Gujrati, a well-known bold and beautiful film and TV actress and model, was born.

1989 More than 125 workers were trapped in a gold mine in Peru.

1990 Japan launched the first Lunar Probe.

1991 Republic of Lithuania demands withdrawal of Soviet Union troops.

1993 Spacecraft Soyuz TM 16 launched.

1996 For the first time in US history, the country's first lady Hillary Clinton was ordered to appear in court.

2000 Presidential assent to the 79th amendment of the constitution to extend the reservation of Dalits for 10 years in the elections.

2002 UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan reaches Islamabad, offers to mediate between India and Pakistan. Kenneth Lee, chairman of US power company Enron operating in India, resigned. On this day the Indian satellite INSAT-3C was successfully placed in its orbit.

2003 Extradition Treaty between France and India.

2005 Bhutan King Jigme Singh Wangchuck, the chief guest of the Republic Day celebrations 2005, reached India. Andhra Pradesh's Telugu Desam MLA Paritala Ravi was shot dead on the same day.

2008 Task force constituted for sanitation policy in Uttar Pradesh. On the same day, former Army Chief J.J. Singh was made the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh. On the same day, an Afghan court sentenced a journalist to death for insulting Islam. Pakistani army liberated three areas in South Waziristan in fierce fighting with militants near the Afghan border.

In 2008, 24 January was announced to be celebrated as National Girl Child Day. This day was fixed for discussion, discussion and other welfare works in the interest of the girl child.
