1506 150 स्विस गार्ड की पहली टुकड़ी पोप की सुरक्षा और सेवा करने के लिए रोम के वेटिकन में पहुंची।

1517 मिस्र की राजधानी काहिरा पर तुर्की ने कब्जा किया।

1666 आगरा में दुनिया भर के आकर्षण का केंद्र ताज महल तीमार कराने वाले सहाब उद्दीन मोहम्मद खुर्रम यानी मुगल बादशाह शाहजहां का निधन हुआ।

1673 बोस्टन एवं न्यूयॉर्क के बीच डाक सेवा की शुरुआत हुई।

1689 पार्लियामेंट ने इंग्लैंड के अंतिम रोमन कैथोलिक राजा जेम्स द्वितीय को उखाड़ फेंकने का औचित्य सिद्ध करने के लिए कन्वेंशन बुलाई, जिन्होंने 1688 में फ्रांस भाग जाने पर सिंहासन खाली कर दिया था।

1760 वांदीवाश के युद्ध में अंग्रेजों ने फ्रांसिसियों को हराया।

1775 फ्रांस के विश्व विख्यात भौतिकशास्त्री एवं गणितज्ञ आन्द्रे मेरी ऐम्पेयर का जन्म हुआ। उन्होंने इलोक्ट्रोनिक टेलीग्राफ बनाया और विद्युत की गति की तीव्रता का पता लगाया और उसे मापने के लिए एक यंत्र बनाया।

1837 दक्षिणी सीरिया में आये भूकंप से हजारों लोगों की जाने गयी।

1858 विख्यात ब्रिटिश औपनिवेशिक अफसर, खोजी, मिशनरी और हॉन्ग कॉन्ग के गवर्नर रहे फ्रेडरिक जाॅह्न लुगार्ड का जन्म मद्रास में हुआ।

1892 प्रमुख भारतीय स्वतंत्रता सेनानी ठाकुर रोशन सिंह का जन्म।

1898 दिग्गज रूसी फिल्म निर्देशक सेर्गे मिखाइलोविच आइसेन्स्टाइन का जन्म हुआ।

1901 इंग्लैंड की महारानी विक्टोरिया का निधन हुआ। भारत उस वक्त उन्हीं के साम्राज्य का हिस्सा था।

1905 रूस के सेंट पीटर्सबर्ग में मजदूरों पर गोलियां चलाई गयी जिसमें लगभग 600 से ज्यादा लोग मारे गए। रूसी क्रांति की शुरुआत 1905 में 22 जनवरी दिन रविवार को हुई थी। उस दौरान रूस में जार निकोलस द्वितीय का शासन था। जार निकोलस की कई नीतियों के खिलाफ व्यापक जनता, किसानों और मजदूरों में गुस्सा था। हजारों लोग इस दिन अपने मेहनताने और काम के घंटों जैसे मुद्दे पर प्रदर्शन कर रहे थे। जनता का काफिला जार से मिलने के लिए सेंट पीटर्सबर्ग के विंटर पैलेस की तरफ बढ़ रहा था। वे अपनी मांगों को लेकर जार निकोलस से मिलना चाहते थे, लेकिन जार के पास पहुंचने से पहले ही जार के सैनिकों ने निहत्थे मजदूरों पर गोलियां बरसा दी। इस घटना में 500 से ज्यादा लोग मारे गए। यह दिन रूस के इतिहास में ब्लडी संडे यानी खूनी रविवार के नाम से जाना जाता है। इसी घटना के बाद 1917 में व्लादिमिर लेनिन के नेतृत्व में रूसी क्रांति हुई। यानी रूसी क्रांति दो चरणों में हुई। पहले चरण में 1905 में रूसी साम्राज्य में एक बड़ा राजनीतिक और सामाजिक आंदोलन हुआ था। इस क्रांति में ही जार के शासन का अंत हुआ था। जार को उसकी पत्नी और 5 बच्चों समेत फांसी दे दी गई थी। क्रांति के बाद रूस में गृह युद्ध छिड़ गया। रेड आर्मी गरीबों, मध्य वर्ग, किसानों और मजदूरों यानी समाजवादियों की थी और व्हाइट आर्मी पूंजीवाद, राजशाही वाले शक्तिशाली लोगों की की थी। 1920 में समाजवाद के विरोधी हार गए। 1922 में सोवियत संघ की स्थापना हुई।

1909 बर्मा के राजनयिक तथा संयुक्त राष्ट्र के तीसरे महासचिव यू. थांट का जन्म हुआ।

1924 रैमसे मैकडोनाल्ड ब्रिटेन में लेबर पार्टी के पहले प्रधानमंत्री बने।

1934 हिंदी फिल्मों के प्रसिद्ध अभिनेता, पटकथा-लेखक, निर्माता, निर्देशक और संपादक विजय आनन्द का जन्म हुआ। यह अभिनेता चेतन आनंद और देव आनंद के भाई थे।

1948 जाने माने तमिल पत्रकार, लेखक, अभिनेता एवं फिल्म निर्माता लक्ष्मणन रामास्वामी का जन्म हुआ।

1949 सादा जीवन उच्च विचार वाले, सबसे अधिक ईमानदार वामपंथी राजनेता और त्रिपुरा के 9वें मुख्यमंत्री हुए माणिक सरकार का उदयपुर में जन्म हुआ।

1950 विख्यात ब्रिटिश फिल्म एवं टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री तथा माॅडल पामेला फोर्चूनी सलेम का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1963 देहरादून में दृष्टिहीनों के लिए राष्ट्रीय पुस्तकालय की स्थापना हुई। इसी दिन गुजरात के भुज में जन्म हुआ नीरज बोरा का। खिलाड़ी 420, फिर हेरा फेरी जैसी तमाम फिल्मों के निर्देशक, पटकथाकार और अभिनेता हैं नीरज वोरा।

1965 पश्चिम बंगाल के दुर्गापुर में इस्पात निर्माण का सरकारी कारखाना शुरू हुआ।

1966 आंध्र प्रदेश के अमीर कारोबारी और राजनेता, तेलुगू देशम पार्टी से लोकसभा सदस्य किसीनेनी श्रीनिवास का जन्म विजयवाड़ा में हुआ। इसी दिन मद्रास के जाने माने कैथोलिक धर्मगुरु और सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता जगत गैसपर राज का कुंजमपुरम में जन्म हुआ।

1968 जाने माने संगीतकार शांतनु मोइत्रा का लखनऊ में जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन अपोलो 5 ने पहले ल्यूनर मॉड्यूल के साथ अंतरिक्ष की ओर उड़ान भरी।

1970 अमेरिका की मशहूर कंपनी बोइंग के विमान बोइंग 747 का लंदन एवं न्यूयॉर्क के बीच पहली व्यावसायिक उड़ान शुरु हुई। इसी दिन बंबई में जानी मानी, खूबसूरत, बोल्ड हिंदी एवं मराठी फिल्म तथा टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री और माॅडल अश्विनी कलसेकर का जन्म हुआ।

1972 जानी मानी, खूबसूरत, बोल्ड भारतीय बाॅलीवुड अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल नम्रता शिरोडकर का जन्म हुआ।

1972 तुर्की के प्रमुख नगर इस्तांबुल की पूरी आबादी को 24 घंटे के लिए नजरबंद किया गया।

1973 अमेरिकी सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने गर्भपात को कानूनी मान्यता दी। कोर्ट ने फैसले के अनुसार महिलाएं के गर्भवती होने के बाद 6 महीने के भीतर गर्भपात करवा सकती हैं। 1973 में इसी दिन नाइजीरिया मे जॉर्डन एयरलाइंस का विमान दुर्घटनाग्रस्त, लगभग 200 यात्रियों की मृत्यु।

1975 जानी मानी, खूबसूरत, बोल्ड बाॅलीवुड फिल्म अभिनेत्री और माॅडल ऋतु शिवपुरी का जन्म मुंबई में हुआ। वे ओम शिवपुरी की बेटी हैं।

1976 कर्नाटक संगीत शैली के प्रसिद्ध गायक तथा मैग्सेसे पुरस्कार प्राप्त सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता टी. एम. कृष्णा का जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन भारत के बड़े अमीर कारोबारी, उद्योगपति लक्ष्मी मित्तल के बेटे बहुराष्ट्रीय कंपनी आर्सेलर मित्तल के मुखिया आदित्य मित्तल का जन्म इंडोनेशिया में हुआ।

1977 असम के प्रसिद्ध राजनेता, सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता और मुख्यमंत्री हुए तरुण राम फूकन का जन्म हुआ।

1980 जानी मानी भारतीय कनाडाई फिल्म एवं टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री तथा माॅडल और रेडियो कलाकार तीजाय सिद्दू का जन्म पंजाब में हुआ।

1981 अभिनेता से नेता बने और चुनाव जीतकर राष्ट्रपति बने रोनाल्ड रीगन का संयुक्त राष्ट्र अमेरिका के 40वें राष्ट्रपति के रूप में शपथ ग्रहण समारोह आयोजित हुआ।

1989 तेलुगू सिनेमा के जाने माने अभिनेता, निर्माता, निर्देशक एवं लेखक नागा शौर्या का जन्म एलुरू में हुआ।

1990 जाने माने भारतीय क्रिकेट खिलाड़ी जयंत यादव का जन्म दिल्ली में हुआ। इसी दिन कर्नाटक के पूर्व मुख्यमंत्री एडी कुमारस्वामी के बेटे फिल्म अभिनेता एवं राजनेता निखिल कुमारस्वामी का जन्म हुआ। 

1992 डॉ. रॉबर्टा बॉन्डर अंतरिक्ष में जाने वाली कनाडा की न्यूरोलॉजिस्ट और पहली महिला बनी।

1994 भारत के सर्वाधिक सब्स्क्राइबर वाले यूट्यूबर, कामेडियन और अभिनेता भुवन बाम का वडोदरा में जन्म हुआ।

1996 कैलीफोर्निया विश्वविद्यालय की वेधशाला के वैज्ञानिकों ने पृथ्वी से लगभग 3,50,000 प्रकाश वर्ष की दूरी पर दो नये ग्रहों की खोज की।

1998 अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति बिल क्लिंटन पर मोनिका लेविंस्की ने अवैध शारीरिक संबंध स्थापित करने का आरोप लगाया।

2002 फिलिस्तीनी शहर तुल्कोरम पर इस्रायल का कब्जा हुआ और अफगानिस्तान के पुनर्निर्माण के लिए टोकियो में अंतर्राष्ट्रीय समुदाय की बैठक में 3.5 अरब डॉलर की मदद की घोषणा की गई।

2003 उड़िया फिल्मों की जानी मानी, खूबसूरत, बोल्ड अभिनेत्री एवं शास्त्रीय नृत्यांगना भूमिका दाश का भुवनेश्वर में जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन अमेरिकी सरकार अंतरिक्ष एजेंसी नासा के अंतरिक्ष यान पायनीयर 10 पृथ्वी से (सर्वाधिक दूर मानव निर्मित यान) से अंतिम बार संपर्क स्थापित हुआ।

2006 श्रीलंका के राष्ट्रपति महिंदा राजपक्षे ने विद्रोही संगठन लिट्टे से बातचीत की पेशकश की। इसी दिन इवा मोराल्स ने बोलीविया के राष्ट्रपति पद की शपथ ली।

2008 भाजपा की अगुवाई वाले राष्ट्रीय जनतांत्रिक गठबंधन ने लोकसभा में विपक्ष के नेता लालकृष्ण आडवाणी को आगामी लोकसभा चुनाव के दौरान भावी प्रधानमंत्री के रूप में पेश करने के प्रस्ताव का समर्थन किया। इसी दिन पाकिस्तान के दक्षिणी वजीरिस्तान में लाक्या किले पर आतंकवादियों के हमले में पांच पाकिस्तानी सैनिक मारे गये।

2009 डेनी बोएल की बहुचर्चित फिल्म स्लमडॉग मिलेनियर का ऑस्कर के लिए नामांकन हुआ। हॉलीवुड के मशहूर फिल्मकार डैनी बॉयल की एक फिल्म आई थी, स्लमडॉग मिलिनेयर। बंबई के स्लम में पैदा हुए जमाल और सलीम नाम के दो भाइयों की कहानी इस फिल्म में दिखाई गई थी। जमाल बड़ा होकर कौन बनेगा करोड़पति के शो में जाता है। इस शो में वो सभी सवालों के जवाब देता है। पुलिस चींटिंग के जुर्म में उसे पकड़ लेती है। इस फिल्म ने पूरी दुनिया में धूम मचाई। 22 जनवरी 2009 को इस फिल्म का नॉमिनेशन ऑस्कर के लिए हुआ था। इस फिल्म ने 8 ऑस्कर अवॉर्ड जीते थे। भारत से एआर रहमान को बेस्ट ओरिजनल सॉन्ग के लिए ऑस्कर मिला था।

2009 सरकार ने सार्वजनिक निजी भागीदारी आधार वाली तीन बंदरगाह परियोजनाओं को मंजूदी दी।

2015 उक्रेन के दोनेत्स्क में हुए विस्फोट में 13 लोगों की मौत हुई।

2014 प्रसिद्ध तेलुगु फिल्म निर्माता और फिल्म अभिनेता ए. नागेश्वर का निधन हुआ।

2021 प्रख्यात भजन गायक नरेंद्र चंचल का निधन हुआ।

1666 Sahab Uddin Mohammad Khurram i.e. Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, who built the Taj Mahal, the center of attraction around the world, died in Agra.

1673 Postal service started between Boston and New York.

The 1689 Parliament convenes the Convention to justify the overthrow of James II, the last Roman Catholic king of England, who had vacated the throne when he fled to France in 1688.

The British defeated the French in the Battle of Wandiwash in 1760.

1775 Andre Marie Ampere, world famous physicist and mathematician of France, was born. He made the electronic telegraph and discovered the intensity of the speed of electricity and made an instrument to measure it.

Thousands of people were killed in the 1837 earthquake in southern Syria.

1858 Frederick John Lugard, noted British colonial officer, explorer, missionary and Governor of Hong Kong, was born in Madras.

1892 Birth of Thakur Roshan Singh, prominent Indian freedom fighter.

1898 Sergei Mikhailovich Eisenstein, legendary Russian film director, was born.

1901 Queen Victoria of England passed away. India was a part of his empire at that time.

1905 Workers were fired upon in St. Petersburg, Russia, killing more than 600 people. The Russian Revolution began in 1905 on Sunday, January 22. During that time Tsar Nicholas II was ruling in Russia. There was anger among the broad masses, peasants and workers, against many of Czar Nicholas' policies. Thousands of people were demonstrating on this day on issues like their wages and working hours. The public convoy was heading to the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg to meet the Tsar. They wanted to meet Czar Nicholas with their demands, but before they could reach Czar, Czar's soldiers opened fire on the unarmed workers. More than 500 people died in this incident. This day is known in the history of Russia as Bloody Sunday. After this incident, the Russian Revolution took place in 1917 under the leadership of Vladimir Lenin. That is, the Russian Revolution took place in two phases. The first phase was a major political and social movement in the Russian Empire in 1905. The rule of the Tsar came to an end in this revolution itself. The Czar was hanged along with his wife and 5 children. After the revolution, a civil war broke out in Russia. The Red Army belonged to the poor, middle class, peasants and workers i.e. socialists and the White Army belonged to the powerful people of capitalism, monarchy. The opponents of socialism were defeated in 1920. In 1922 the Soviet Union was established.

1909 Burmese diplomat and third Secretary-General of the United Nations U.N. Thant was born.

1924 Ramsey Macdonald became the first Prime Minister of the Labor Party in Britain.

1934 Vijay Anand, famous actor, screenwriter, producer, director and editor of Hindi films, was born. He was the brother of actors Chetan Anand and Dev Anand.

1948 Lakshmanan Ramaswamy, noted Tamil journalist, writer, actor, and filmmaker, was born.

1949 Manik Sarkar, the most honest left politician and 9th Chief Minister of Tripura, simple living, high thinking, was born in Udaipur.

1950 Pamela Fortuny Salem, noted British film and television actress and model, was born in Bombay.

In 1963, the National Library for the Blind was established in Dehradun. Neeraj Bora was born on this day in Bhuj, Gujarat. Neeraj Vora is the director, screenwriter and actor of many films like Khiladi 420, Phir Hera Pheri.

1965 Government steel factory started in Durgapur, West Bengal.

1966 Kisineni Srinivas, Lok Sabha member from Telugu Desam Party, wealthy businessman and politician from Andhra Pradesh, was born in Vijayawada. On this day Jagat Gaspar Raj, a famous Catholic priest and social worker of Madras was born in Kunjampuram.

1968 Shantanu Moitra, noted musician, was born in Lucknow. On the same day, Apollo 5 flew into space with the first Lunar Module.

1970 America's famous company Boeing's Boeing 747's aircraft started its first commercial flight between London and New York. On this day in Bombay the famous, beautiful, bold Hindi and Marathi film and television actress and model Ashwini Kalsekar was born.

1972 Namrata Shirodkar, well-known, beautiful, bold Indian Bollywood actress and model, was born.

1972 The entire population of Turkey's major city Istanbul was put under house arrest for 24 hours.

1973 The US Supreme Court legalized abortion. According to the court's decision, women can get an abortion done within 6 months after becoming pregnant. On this day in 1973, a Jordan Airlines plane crashed in Nigeria, killing nearly 200 passengers.

1975 Ritu Shivpuri, well-known, beautiful, bold Bollywood film actress and model, was born in Mumbai. She is the daughter of Om Shivpuri.

1976 T. M. Krishna, renowned Carnatic vocalist and Magsaysay awardee social worker, was born. On this day Aditya Mittal, the head of multinational company ArcelorMittal, son of India's richest businessman, industrialist Lakshmi Mittal, was born in Indonesia.

1977 Tarun Ram Phukan, noted politician, social worker and Chief Minister of Assam, was born.

1980 Teejay Siddu, noted Indo-Canadian film and television actress and model and radio artist, was born in Punjab.

1981 Actor-turned-politician and re-elected President Ronald Reagan is sworn in as the 40th President of the United States of America.

1989 Naga Shourya, well-known actor, producer, director and writer of Telugu cinema, was born in Eluru.

1990 Jayant Yadav, well-known Indian cricket player, was born in Delhi. On this day film actor and politician Nikhil Kumaraswamy, son of former Chief Minister of Karnataka AD Kumaraswamy, was born.

1992 Dr. Roberta Bondar became a Canadian neurologist and the first woman in space.

1994 Bhuvan Bam, India's most subscribed YouTuber, comedian and actor, was born in Vadodara.

1996 Scientists at the University of California Observatory discovered two new planets at a distance of about 350,000 light years from Earth.

1998 Monica Lewinsky accuses US President Bill Clinton of having an illicit physical relationship.

2002 Israel captures the Palestinian city of Tulkorum and $3.5 billion in aid is announced at a meeting of the international community in Tokyo for the reconstruction of Afghanistan.

2003 Bhumika Dash, well-known, beautiful, bold actress and classical dancer of Oriya films, was born in Bhubaneswar. On this day, the US government space agency NASA's spacecraft Pioneer 10 established contact with Earth (the farthest man-made vehicle) for the last time.

2006 Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa offers talks with the rebel organization LTTE. On the same day, Eva Morales was sworn in as the President of Bolivia.

2008 The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance supported a motion to project LK Advani, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, as a future Prime Minister during the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. On the same day, five Pakistani soldiers were killed in an attack by terrorists on Lakya Fort in South Waziristan, Pakistan.

2009 Danny Boyle's acclaimed film Slumdog Millionaire was nominated for an Oscar. A film by Hollywood's famous filmmaker Danny Boyle came out, Slumdog Millionaire. The story of two brothers named Jamal and Salim, born in the slums of Bombay, was shown in this film. Jamal grows up and enters the show Kaun Banega Crorepati. In this show he answers all the questions. The police arrests him for cheating. This film made a splash all over the world. The film was nominated for an Oscar on 22 January 2009. This film won 8 Oscar Awards. AR Rahman from India got the Oscar for Best Original Song.

In 2015, 13 people died in an explosion in Donetsk, Ukraine.

2014 Famous Telugu film producer and film actor A.R. Nageshwar passed away.

2021 Renowned bhajan singer Narendra Chanchal passed away.
