1450 पुर्तगाली नाविक बारथोलोमियु डेयाज का जन्म हुआ। बारथोलोमियु डेयाज ने पुर्तगाल से समुद्र मार्ग से भारत का रास्ता खोजा था। इस जलमार्ग का प्रयोग करके ही वास्को डी गामा भारत पहुंचा था।

1559 एलिजाबेथ प्रथम इंग्लैंड की साम्राज्ञी बनी।

1607 स्पेन में राष्ट्रीय दिवालिएपन की घोषणा के बाद बैंक ऑफ जेनेवा का पतन हुआ।

1610 विश्व विख्यात भौतिकविद एवं गणितज्ञ और खगोलविद गैलीलियो गैलिली ने बृहस्पति के चौथे उपग्रह कैलिस्टो की खोज की।

1709 मुगल बादशाह बहादुर शाह जफर ने अपने तीसरे भाई काम बख्श को हैदाराबाद में हराया।

1818 उदयपुर मेवाड़ की अपनी राजसत्ता बचाए रखने के लिए राणा राजशाही ने ब्रिटिश राज की आधीनता स्वीकार करते हुए समझौते पर हस्ताक्षर किए।

1842 ब्रिटिश ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी के सेनाधिकारी डॉ. विलियम ब्राइडन ब्रिटेन अफगान युद्ध में जिंदा बचे रहने वाले इकलौते ब्रिटिश सदस्य रहे।

1843 जाने माने लेखक फकीर मोहन सेनापति का जन्म बालासौर, उड़ीसा में हुआ।

1849 अंग्रजों और सिखों के बीच चिलियनवाला में दूसरा युद्ध हुआ।

1889 असम में युवाओं ने अपनी साहित्यिक पत्रिका जोनाकी का प्रकाशन शुरु किया।

1896 भारत के प्रसिद्ध कन्नड़ कवि और साहित्यकार दत्तात्रेय रामचन्द्र बेंद्रे का जन्म हुआ।

1910 अमेरिका के महानगर न्यूयॉर्क शहर में दुनिया का पहला सार्वजनिक रेडियो प्रसारण प्रारंभ हुआ।

1911 प्रखर और प्रख्यात हिंदी कवि शमशेर बहादुर सिंह का जन्म हुआ।

1913 भारतीय कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी के राजनीतिज्ञ एवं केरल के मुख्यमंत्री हुए सी. अच्युत मेनन का जन्म हुआ।

1926 प्रसिद्ध फिल्म निर्माता एवं निर्देशक शक्ति सामंत का जन्म हुआ। उन्होंने आराधना, हावड़ा ब्रिज, बरसात की एक रात, कटी पतंग जैसी तमाम लोकप्रिय फिल्में बनाईं।

1915 इटली के एवेज्जानो शहर में आये विनाशकारी भूकंप में 30 हजार से अधिक लोग मारे गए।

1919 आंध्र प्रदेश के मुख्यमंत्री और उत्तर प्रदेश के राज्यपाल हुए डाॅ. मैरी चेन्ना रेड्डी का जन्म हुआ।

1921 भारतीय राजनीतिज्ञ और कुछ समय भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के अध्यक्ष रहे आर.एन. माधोलकर का देहावसान हुआ। 

1930 करीब 600 गीतों को संगीतबद्ध करने वाले प्रसिद्ध बाॅलीवुड संगीतकार सरदार मलिका जन्म कपूरथला में हुआ। इसी दिन न्यूयॉर्क मिरर अखबार में बच्चों का पसंदीदा कॉमिक्स चरित्र मिकी माउस पहली बार कॉमिक स्क्रिप्ट में दिखा। इसे वॉल्ट डिजनी ने सृजित किया था। धीरे-धीरे मिकी माउस बहुत लोकप्रिय हो गया। कुछ ही महीनों बाद इस कॉमिक स्ट्रिप को 24 देशों के 40 अखबारों में छापा जाने लगा।

1938 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय संतूर वादक शिवकुमार शर्मा का जन्म हुआ।

1938 जानी मानी लेखिका और कवियत्रि नवनीता देव सेन का जन्म कोलकाता में हुआ।

1942 जाने माने बाॅलीवुड फिल्म पटकथा लेखक, संवाद लेखक और कहानीकार जावेद सिद्दीकी का जन्म हुआ।

1948 राष्ट्रपिता महात्मा गांधी ने हिंदू-मुस्लिम एकता बनाये रखने के लिये आमरण अनशन शुरू किया।

1949 प्रथम भारतीय अंतरिक्ष यात्री (भारतीय वायुसेना में विंग कमांडर) राकेश शर्मा का पंजाब के पटियाला में जन्म हुआ। अंतरिक्ष में जाने वाले राकेश शर्मा 128वें इंसान थे और पहले भारतीय थे। 1970 में शर्मा ने एयरफोर्स में बतौर पायलट ज्वाइन किया। पाकिस्तान के साथ 1971 की जंग में उन्होंने 21 बार मिग-21 से उड़ान भरी थी और उस वक्त वो 23 साल के भी नहीं हुए थे। राकेश शर्मा जब 25 साल के थे, तभी एयरफोर्स के सबसे बेहतरीन पायलट बन गए थे।1982 में राकेश शर्मा को दो दर्जन से ज्यादा फाइटर पायलटों के टेस्ट के बाद अंतरिक्ष यात्रा के लिए चुना गया था। उनके अलावा रवीश मल्होत्रा को भी चुना गया था और दोनों को रूस में ट्रेनिंग के लिए भेजा गया था। हालांकि, रवीश मल्होत्रा बैकअप के तौर पर थे। इसरो और सोवियत संघ के संयुक्त मिशन के तहत राकेश शर्मा ने 3 अप्रैल 1984 को सोयूज टी-11 से अंतरिक्ष यात्रा शुरू की थी। अंतरिक्ष में उन्होंने 7 दिन 21 घंटे और 40 मिनट बिताए थे। अंतरिक्ष से सोयूज टी-11 की क्रू के साथ ज्वॉइंट कॉन्फ्रेंस के जरिए देश ने पहली बार अंतरिक्ष में मौजूद अपने नागरिक के साथ बात की थी। उस समय प्रधानमंत्री इंदिरा गांधी ने राकेश शर्मा ने पूछा था कि अंतरिक्ष से भारत कैसा दिखता है? उन्होंने हिंदी में जवाब दिया था- सारे जहां से अच्छा। राकेश शर्मा ने अंतरिक्ष यात्रा से लौटने के बाद फिर से जेट पायलट के रूप में नौकरी की।। उन्होंने जगुआर जैसे लड़ाकू विमान उड़ाए। राकेश शर्मा को हीरो ऑफ द सोवियत यूनियन अवॉर्ड से भी नवाजा गया है। शर्मा इकलौते भारतीय हैं, जिन्हें ये सम्मान मिला है। इसके अतिरिक्त उन्हें अशोक चक्र से भी सम्मानित किया गया है।

1963 जाने माने भारतीय गायक, गीतकार, संगीतकार, पटकथा लेखक और नाट्यकर्मी पीयूष मिश्रा का ग्वालियर में जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन टोगों के राष्ट्रपति सिलवेनस ओलिम्पियो की एक सैनिक विद्रोह में हत्या कर दी गयी।

1964 पश्चिम बंगाल की राजधानी कलकत्ता में हिंदू और मुसलमानों के बीच भयानक सांप्रदायिक दंगे हुए। जिनमें करीब 200 लोग मारे गए और 300 से ज्यादा लोग घायल हुए। 1964 में इसी दिन प्रसिद्ध शायर शौक बहराइची का निधन हुआ।

1976 प्रख्यात भारतीय तबला वादक अहमद जान थिरकवा का निधन हुआ।

1978 अमेरिकी अंतरिक्ष एजेंसी नासा ने पहली अमेरिकन महिला अंतरिक्ष यात्री का चयन किया।

1983 जाने-माने बाॅलीवुड फिल्म अभिनेता इमरान खान का जन्म हुआ।

1988 जाने माने फिल्म अभिनेता एवं गायक अध्ययन सुमन का बंबई में जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन 1988 में चीन के राष्ट्रपति चिंग चियांग कुमो का निधन।

1993 अमरीका और उसके सहयोगियों ने दक्षिणी इराक में नो फ्लाई जोन लागू करने के लिए इराक पर हवाई हमले की शुरूआत की।

1995 बेलारूस नाटो का 24वां सदस्य देश बना।

2006 परमाणु कार्यक्रम को लेकर ईरान पर सैन्य आक्रमण से ब्रिटेन ने इन्कार किया।

2007 महिलाओं के प्रति भेदभाव दूर करने के लिए संयुक्त राष्ट्र का 37वां अधिवेशन न्यूयार्क में शुरू।

2009 जम्मू एवं कश्मीर के पूर्व मुख्यमंत्री फारुख अब्दुल्ला अपने राजनीतिक दल नेशनल कांफ्रेंस के अध्यक्ष चुने गये।

2010 इस दिन जानकारी दी गई कि अंतरराष्ट्रीय वित्तीय संकट के कारण जर्मनी की अर्थव्यवस्था में साल 2009 के दौरान 5 फीसदी की गिरावट दर्ज की गई। द्वितीय विश्व युद्ध के बाद से यह सबसे बड़ी गिरावट है।

2020 लाहौर हाई कोर्ट ने उस विशेष अदालत को असंवैधानिक करार दिया, जिसने पाकिस्तान के पूर्व राष्ट्रपति परवेज मुशर्रफ को संगीन देशद्रोह का दोषी करार देते हुए मौत की सजा सुनाई थी। इसी दिन ओडिशा के फिल्म निर्माता मनमोहन महापात्र का भुवनेश्वर में निधन हुआ।

1709 Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar defeated his third brother Kam Baksh at Hyderabad.

1818 Udaipur Mewar's Rana Rajshahi signed an agreement accepting the subordination of the British Raj to preserve its statehood.

1842 Dr. William Bryden, a military officer of the British East India Company, was the only British member of Britain to survive the Afghan War.

1915: More than 30,000 people died in a devastating earthquake in the city of Avezzano, Italy.

1919 Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and Governor of Uttar Pradesh Dr. Mary Chenna Reddy was born.

1921 Indian politician and sometime President of the Indian National Congress R.N. Madholkar passed away.

1930 Famous Bollywood music composer Sardar Malika, who composed about 600 songs, was born in Kapurthala. On the same day, the children's favorite comic book character Mickey Mouse appeared in a comic script for the first time in the New York Mirror newspaper. It was created by Walt Disney. Gradually Mickey Mouse became very popular. Within a few months, this comic strip was being published in 40 newspapers in 24 countries.

1938 Shivkumar Sharma, famous Indian santoor player, was born.

1938 Navnita Dev Sen, noted writer and poet, was born in Kolkata.

1942 Javed Siddiqui, well-known Bollywood film screenwriter, dialogue writer and story writer, was born.

1948 Father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi started fast unto death to maintain Hindu-Muslim unity.

1949 Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian astronaut (Wing Commander in the Indian Air Force), was born in Patiala, Punjab. Rakesh Sharma was the 128th man to go into space and the first Indian. In 1970, Sharma joined the Airforce as a pilot. In the 1971 war with Pakistan, he flew MiG-21 21 times and at that time he was not even 23 years old. Rakesh Sharma became the best pilot of the Airforce when he was 25 years old. In 1982, Rakesh Sharma was selected for space travel after a test of more than two dozen fighter pilots. Apart from him, Ravish Malhotra was also selected and both were sent for training in Russia. However, Ravish Malhotra was there as a backup. Rakesh Sharma started space travel from Soyuz T-11 on 3 April 1984 under the joint mission of ISRO and Soviet Union. He spent 7 days 21 hours and 40 minutes in space. Through a joint conference with the crew of Soyuz T-11 from space, the country spoke with its citizen in space for the first time. At that time Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had asked Rakesh Sharma how India looks from space? He replied in Hindi – Saare Jahan Se Accha. Rakesh Sharma again worked as a jet pilot after returning from space travel. He flew fighter aircraft like Jaguar. Rakesh Sharma has also been awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union Award. Sharma is the only Indian to have received this honour. Apart from this, he has also been honored with Ashoka Chakra.

1963 Piyush Mishra, noted Indian singer, songwriter, musician, screenwriter, and playwright, was born in Gwalior. On the same day, the President of Togo, Silvanus Olimpio, was assassinated in a military coup.

1964 Terrible communal riots broke out between Hindus and Muslims in Calcutta, the capital of West Bengal. In which about 200 people were killed and more than 300 people were injured. Famous poet Shouk Bahraichi died on this day in 1964.

1976 Ahmed Jan Thirakwa, noted Indian tabla player, passed away.

1978 The US space agency NASA selected the first American woman astronaut.

1983 Imran Khan, well-known Bollywood film actor, was born.

1988 Adhyayan Suman, noted film actor and singer, was born in Bombay. On this day in 1988, Chinese President Ching Chiang Kumo died.
