215 ईसा पूर्व 23 अप्रैल को ट्रैसिमीन झील पर रोमन की पराजय की स्मृति में वीनस एरिसीना (रोमन पौराणिक कथाओं के अनुसार प्रेम, सौंदर्य, इच्छा, लिंग, प्रजनन क्षमता, सैक्स, समृद्धि और जीत की रोमन देवी) को समर्पित कैपिटोलिन हिल पर मंदिर बनाया गया।

599 कालकमुल के माया राजा उनेह चान ने दक्षिणी मेक्सिको में प्रतिद्वंद्वी शहर-राज्य पैलेंक पर हमला किया, रानी योहल इकनाल को हराया और नगर के शासन को बर्खास्त कर दिया।

711 डैगोबर्ट तृतीय अपने पिता किंग चाइल्डबर्ट तृतीय के बाद फ्रैंक्स के राजा बने।

1014 क्लोंटारफ युद्ध में आयरलैंड के राजा ब्रायन बोरू ने वाइकिंग आक्रमणकारियों को हराया। इस युद्ध में ब्रायन स्वयं भी मारे गये।

1016 एडमंड आयरनसाइड अपने पिता एथेलरेड द अनरेडी के उत्तराधिकारी के रूप में इंग्लैंड के राजा बने।

1200 यूक्सी, फुजियान प्रांत, सांग राजवंश में झू शी (जन्म 18 अक्टूबर, 1130) का निधन हुआ। झू शी प्रमुख चीनी सुलेखक, इतिहासकार, दार्शनिक, कवि और राजनीतिज्ञ थे।

1343 एस्टोनिया के डची में सेंट जॉर्ज नाइट विद्रोह शुरू हुआ।

1348 सेंट जॉर्ज दिवस पर किंग एडवर्ड तृतीय ने ऑर्डर ऑफ द गार्टर की स्थापना कर सामाजिक शिष्टता के नियमन के आदेश दिए।

1516 विख्यात जर्मन कवि, इतिहासकार और पुरातत्वविद जॉर्ज फैब्रिकियस का जन्म हुआ।

1616 स्ट्रैटफोर्ड-अपॉन-एवन, इंग्लैंड में विश्व विख्यात और शीर्ष नाटककार, चिंतक, कवि विलियम शेक्सपियर का देहांत हुआ। इनके नाटकों ने दुनिया को प्रभावित किया।

1660 स्वीडन और पोलैंड ओलिवा संधि पर सहमत हुए।

1661 चार्ल्स द्वितीय का इंग्लैंड, आयरलैंड और स्कॉटलैंड के सम्राट के रूप में वेस्टमिंस्टर एबे लंदन में राज्याभिषेक किया गया।

1751 भारत पर राज करने वाली ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी के एक गवर्नर जनरल हुए गिल्बर्ट एलियट मिंटो का जन्म हुआ।

1774 ब्रिटिश कमांडर कर्नल चैपमेन ने रोहिला सेना को हराकर रुहेलखंड पर कब्जा किया।

1858 प्रख्यात भारतीय महिला विद्वान, कवियत्री और समाज सुधारक पंडिता रमाबाई का जन्म महाराष्ट्र के कनारा में हुआ। महिला अधिकारों और सम्मान की पैरोकार रमाबाई ने भारत भ्रमण और इंग्लैंड तक की यात्रा की। इसी दिन भारत के प्रथम स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के एक नायक जगदीशपुर के बाबू वीर कुंवर सिंह का निधन हुआ।

1873 महाराष्ट्र के विख्यात समाज सुधारक विट्ठल रामजी शिंदे का जन्म हुआ।

1889 प्रसिद्ध हिंदी साहित्यकार जीपी श्रीवास्तव का जन्म हुआ।

1891 रुस की राजधानी मास्को से यहूदियों को निष्कासित किया गया।

1907 विख्यात ब्रिटिश फिल्म एवं टेलीविजन अभिनेता, रेडियो कलाकार हैनरी जेम्स हेयटर का जन्म लोनावाला, बंबई में हुआ।

1908 जर्मनी, डेनमार्क, ब्रिटेन, स्वीडन, हालैंड और फ्रांस के बीच उत्तरी अटलांटिक संगठन संधि पर हस्ताक्षर किये गये।

1913 बीची के नाम से मशहूर कर्नाटक के विख्यात मानवतावादी, लेखक रायासम भीमसेना राव का जन्म हरपनहल्ली में हुआ। इसी दिन भारत के संविधान के लेखक, पत्रकार, चिंतक और दलित अधिकारवादी डॉ. भीमराव आम्बेडकर की जीवनी लेखक साहित्यकार धनंजय कीर का जन्म हुआ।

1938 23 अप्रैल को एस जानकी का जन्म रिपाले, आंध्र प्रदेश में हुआ। भारत की प्रसिद्ध पार्श्वगायिका जानकी ने तमिल, तेलुगू, कन्नड़, मलयालम और हिंदी भाषाओं में करीब 20 हजार से अधिक गीत गाएं। उन्हें दक्षिण भारत की सुर कोकिला कहा जाता है।

1926 प्रख्यात हिंदी भाषा उन्नायक, प्रखर चिंतक और स्वतंत्रता संग्राम सेनानी माधवराव सप्रे का निधन हुआ।

1927 सुरबहार वाद्ययंत्र बजाने वाली एकमात्र महिला संगीतज्ञा अन्नपूर्णा देवी का जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के नेता और गोवा के मुख्यमंत्री रहे विल्फ्रेड डिसूजाका जन्म हुआ।

1930 आजादी के नायकों में से एक वीर चंद्र सिंह गढ़वाली को बेहद सम्मान के साथ याद किया जाता है। वे ब्रिटिश भारतीय सेना में 3 सितंबर 1914 को भर्ती हुए। 1 अगस्त 1915 को उन्हें सैनिकों के साथ अंग्रेजों ने फ्रांस भेज दिया। 1 फरवरी 1916 को वे वापस लैंसडौन, गढ़वाल आ गये। इसके बाद 1917 में उन्होंने प्रथम विश्व युद्ध के दौरान अंग्रेजों की ओर से मेसोपोटामिया युद्ध व 1918 में बगदाद की लड़ाई लड़ी। बाद में अंग्रेजों ने उन्हें हवलदार से सैनिक बना दिया। चंद्र सिंह की इसी दौरान राष्ट्रपिता महात्मा गांधी से मुलाकात हुई। 1920 में चंद्र सिंह को बटालियन के साथ बजीरिस्तान भेजा गया। वापस आने पर उन्हे खैबर दर्रा भेजा गया और उन्हें मेजर हवलदार बना दिया गया। तब पेशावर में आजादी की जंग चल रही थी। अंग्रेजों ने चंद्र सिंह को उनकी बटालियन के साथ पेशावर भेज दिया और इस आंदोलन को कुचलने के निर्देश दिए। 23 अप्रैल 1930 को आंदोलनरत निहत्थी जनता पर फायरिग का हुक्म दिया गया, तो चंद्र सिंह ने निहत्थों पर गोलियां चलाने से इनकार कर दिया। आज्ञा के उल्लंघन पर अंग्रेजों ने चंद्र सिंह व उनके साथियों पर मुकदमा चलाया। उन्हें सजा हुई व उनकी संपत्ति भी जब्त कर ली गई। अलग-अलग जेलों में रहने के बाद 26 सितंबर 1941 को वे जेल से रिहा हुए।

1935 यूरोपीय देश पोलैंड ने संविधान अपनाया।

1946 युगांडा के प्रसिद्ध लेखक, राजनीतिक टिप्पणीकार, चिंतक और कंपाला अंतरराष्ट्रीय विश्वविद्यालय के कुलपति मोहम्मद ममदानी का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1951 अमेरिकन पत्रकार विलियम एन ओटिस को चेकोस्लोवाकिया सरकार ने जासूसी के आरोप में गिरफ्तार किया।

1952 विख्यात अमेरिकी संगीतकार, गीतकार गायक और संगीत रिकाॅर्ड उत्पादक नारदा माइकेल वाल्डेन का जन्म कालामाज़ू, मिसिगन में हुआ।

1965 विख्यात एवरेस्ट विजेता पर्वतारोही तेन्जिंग नोर्गे के बेटे प्रसिद्ध पर्वतारोही जामलिंग तेन्जिंग नोर्गे का जन्म दार्जिलिंग में हुआ।

1968 जानी मानी मराठी, हिंदी फिल्म अभिनेत्री, भारतीय शास्त्रीय लोक नृत्यांगना किशोरी शहाणे का जन्म पुणे में हुआ और इसी दिन प्रख्यात गजल गायक बड़े गुलाम अली खान का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन कोलंबिया विश्वविद्यालय, न्यूयॉर्क में वियतनाम में अमेरिकी युद्ध का विरोध कर रहे छात्रों ने प्रशासन की इमारतों कब्जा कर लिया।

1969 जाने माने फिल्म अभिनेता मनोज बाजपेयी का जन्म हुआ।

1973 विख्यात हिंदी और ब्रजभाषा कवि और लेखक धीरेंद्र वर्मा का निधन हुआ।

1974 फेमिना मिस इंडिया ऐशिया पेसिफिक 1994, फिल्म तथा टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री श्वेता मेनन का जन्म चंडीगढ़ में हुआ।

1984 वैज्ञानिकों ने एड्स के वायरस के बारे में पता लगाया।

1982 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय यूट्यूबर, खूबसूरत, बोल्ड फिल्म एवं टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री, टेलीविजन शो प्रस्तोता रजिनी हरिदास का जन्म कोच्चि में हुआ।

1985 कोका कोला कंपनी ने न्यू कोक के नाम से एक नए फार्मूले वाला शीतल पेय प्रस्तुत किया, जिसे कंपनी के मुख्य पेय का स्थान लेने के लिए तैयार किया गया था, लेकिन तीन महीने के भीतर ही नये पेय को वापिस ले लिया गया और पुराना पेय कोका कोला क्लासिक के नाम से दोबारा बाजार में पेश किया गया।

1987 जानी मानी, बोल्ड, खूबसूरत, हिंदी, मराठी, बाॅलीवुड फिल्म एवं टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री तथा माॅडल प्रिया मराठे मोघे का जन्म ठाणे में हुआ। इसी दिन भारत के सर्वोच्च न्यायालय ने विधवाओं को संपत्ति में हिस्से का निर्णय दिया।

1990 नामीबिया संयुक्त राष्ट्र संघ का 160वां सदस्य बना।

1992 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय फिल्म निर्माता-निर्देशक भारत रत्न से सम्मानित सत्यजीत राय का निधन हुआ था। उन्होंने कुल 36 फिल्मों का निर्देशन किया था, जिनमें से 32 को राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार मिले। सत्यजीत रे फिल्म निर्माण से जुड़े हर काम में सिद्धहस्थ थे। स्क्रीनप्ले, कास्टिंग, म्यूजिक, आर्ट डायरेक्शन, एडिटिंग इत्यादि लगभग हर काम का हुनर रखते थे। फिल्मकार होने के साथ-साथ वे कहानीकार, चित्रकार और फिल्म आलोचक भी थे। उनकी फिल्मों को विदेश में भी कई सम्मान मिले। 1978 में बर्लिन फिल्म फेस्टिवल की संचालक समिति ने उन्हें विश्व के तीन सर्वकालिक महान निर्देशकों में से एक चुना था। 1985 में उन्हें हिंदी फिल्म इंडस्ट्री के सर्वोच्च सम्मान दादा साहब फाल्के पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया था। 1992 में उन्हें लाइफटाइम अचीवमेंट ऑस्कर और भारत रत्न दोनों मिले थे। 23 अप्रैल 1992 को दिल का दौरा पड़ने की वजह से उनका निधन हो गया था। इसी दिन मैकडॉनल्ड्स चीन में अपना पहला फास्ट-फूड रेस्तरां खोला।

1993 विदेशी शासन का सैकड़ों साल गुलाम रहने और लंबे संघर्ष के बाद पूर्वी अफ्रीका के छोटे से देश एरिट्रिया में इथियोपिया से आजादी हेतु जनमत संग्रह पर तीन दिन का मतदान शुरू हुआ।

1995 विश्व पुस्तक मेले की शुरुआत हुई। संयुक्त राष्ट्र शैक्षिक, वैज्ञानिक और सांस्कृतिक संगठन यूनेस्को ने किताबें लिखने, छपने, बिकने, पढ़ने, कॉपीराइट राइट आदि को बढ़ावा देने के लिए लेखकों, प्रकाशकों, पाठकों, पुस्तक प्रकाशक और बिक्रेता संघों, शैक्षिक संस्थानों के साथ मिलकर इसका आयोजन किया। अब यह दुनिया भर में प्रचलित है।

1996 सोवियत संघ से अलग होकर संप्रभु देश बने चेचेन्या के अलगाववादी नेता दुदायेव की हुए एक हवाई हमले में मौत हो गयी।

1999 नाटो यानी उत्तरी अटलांटिक संधि संगठन की स्थापना के 50 वर्ष पूरे होने पर वांशिगटन में तीन दिवसीय शिखर सम्मेलन शुरु हुआ।

2002 चीन की राजधानी पेइचिंग (बीजिंग) में भारत तथा चीन के बीच सीमापार आतंकवाद पर वार्ता।

2005 यूट्यूब की वेबसाइट पर पहला विडियो अपलोड किया गया। यह विडियो यूट्यूब के संस्थापक जावेद करीम की सान दिआगो चिड़ियाघर की यात्रा का था। एक वर्ष के भीतर इस साइट पर करीब 10 करोड़ विडियो अपलोड किए गए।

2007 सोवियत संघ के विघटन के बाद फिर से बने रूस के प्रथम राष्ट्रपति बोरिस निकोलाइएविच येल्तसिन का निधन हुआ। लेखक जो वाल्टन ने स्थापित इंटरनेशनल पिक्सल स्टैंड टैक्नोपीजेंट डे प्रथम बार 2007 में मनाया गया। वेबस्कैब्स के तहत अमेरिका के फिक्शन और फंतासी लेखक अपनी रचनाएँ मुफ्त में नेट पर पोस्ट करते हैं। वाल्टन के अनुसार, इस दिन का उद्देश्य लेखकों को इंटरनेट पर पेशेवर गुणवत्ता वाले कार्यों को मुफ्त में पोस्ट करने के लिए प्रोत्साहित करना था।

2008 उत्तर प्रदेश की राजधानी लखनऊ स्थित क्षेत्रीय अनुसंधान और विश्लेषण केन्द्र, को केंद्र सरकार के विज्ञान और प्रौद्योगिकी विभाग ने मान्यता दी। इंडियन फारमर्स फर्टिलाइजर (इफ्को) और मिस्र की सेंट्रल एग्रीकल्चर व कोआपरेटिव यूनियन (कांकू) ने सहकारिता के क्षेत्र में नई परियोजनाओं के लिए एक समझौता किया। अमेरिकी कांग्रेस ने म्यांमार की लोकतंत्र समर्थक नेता आंग सांग सूकी को शीर्ष नागरिक सम्मान अमेरिकी कांग्रेस स्वर्ण पदक से सम्मानित करने की घोषणा की।

2013 हिंदी फिल्मों की प्रसिद्ध अभिनेत्री और पार्श्वगायिका शमशाद बेगम का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन वेस्टइंडीज के विस्फोटक बल्लेबाज क्रिस गेल ने क्रिकेट इतिहास का सबसे तेज शतक मात्र 30 गेंदों में जड़ा।

2014 लोकतांत्रिक गणराज्य कांगो में हुई एक भीषण ट्रेन दुर्घटना में तकरीबन 60 लोगों की जान गयी और 80 से अधिक लोग घायल हो गए। इसी दिन फेसबुक ने 2013 में पहली तिमाही में 642 मिलियन डाॅलर मुनाफा होने की घोषणा की।

2018 कनाडा के टोरंटो में एक वाहन से टक्कर मार कर 11 लोगों की हत्या और 15 घायल कर दिए गये। 25 वर्षीय संदिग्ध एलेक मिनासियन को गिरफ्तार कर लिया गया है।

2019 अप्रैल 2019 में म्यांमार में हापाकांत जेड खदान ढहने से चार खनिकों और दो बचावकर्मियों की मौत हो गई, करीब 50 लोग लापता हो गए और उन्हें मृत मान लिया गया। इसी दिन चैरिटी सनशाइन टिलमैन-डिक, अमेरिकी सोप्रानो गायक और प्रस्तुतकर्ता एवं जीन, लक्जमबर्ग के ग्रैंड ड्यूक का निधन हुआ।

2021 डैन कमिंसकी नामक अमेरिकी इंटरनेट सुरक्षा शोधकर्ता का निधन हुआ।

2020 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय रंगमंच अभिनेत्री और निर्देशिका उषा गांगुली का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन भारत में कोरोना वायरस के मामले 21,700 हुए, मरने वालों की संख्या 686 पहुंची। देश में लॉकडाउन को 30 दिन पूरे हुए, हालांकि कुछ राज्यों जैसे उत्तराखंड आदि में 22 मार्च के जनता कर्फ्यू को ही लाॅकडाउन में तब्दील कर दिया गया था, इस हिसाब से कुछ राज्यों में लाॅकडाउन 23 अप्रैल को 32 दिन का हुआ।

2022 अमेरिकी राजनीतिज्ञ, संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका सीनेट के अस्थायी अध्यक्ष ओरिन हैच का निधन हुआ।

2023 बजरंग पूनिया और विनेश फोगाट सहित देश के शीर्ष पहलवान रविवार को विरोध प्रदर्शन के लिए जंतर-मंतर पर फिर से एकत्र हुए। उन्होंने सरकार से भारतीय कुश्ती महासंघ (डब्ल्यूएफआई) के प्रमुख बृजभूषण शरण सिंह के खिलाफ यौन उत्पीड़न के आरोपों की जांच करने वाली निगरानी समिति की रिपोर्ट सार्वजनिक करने की मांग की। बड़ी संख्या में पुलिसकर्मियों के बीच पहलवानों ने डब्ल्यूएफआई प्रमुख के खिलाफ प्राथमिकी दर्ज करने की भी मांग की। इन पहलवानों ने इस साल जनवरी में पहली बार धरना प्रदर्शन कर महासंघ को भंग करने की मांग की थी। बृजभूषण शरण सिंह ने हालांकि इन आरोपों को खारिज कर दिया था। दिग्गज मुक्केबाज एमसी मैरी कॉम की अध्यक्षता वाली छह सदस्यीय निगरानी समिति ने अप्रैल के पहले सप्ताह में अपनी रिपोर्ट सौंपी थी, लेकिन सरकार ने अभी तक इसे सार्वजनिक नहीं किया है। विश्व चैंपियनशिप की पदक विजेता विनेश ने सवाल किया कि समिति को अपनी रिपोर्ट पेश करने में कितना समय लगने वाला है ? तीन महीने हो चुके हैं। क्या रिपोर्ट तब आएगी, जब शिकायत दर्ज कराने वाली लड़कियों की मौत हो जाएगी? हम सरकार से निष्कर्ष जारी करने के लिए कह कर थक चुके हैं। हमने कनॉट प्लेस के एक पुलिस स्टेशन में शिकायत दर्ज की है और चाहते हैं कि बृजभूषण शरण सिंह के खिलाफ प्राथमिकी दर्ज हो। उन्होंने कहा कि हमारा (डब्ल्यूएफआई) चुनाव प्रक्रिया से कोई लेना-देना नहीं है। हम अपने करियर को लेकर अधिक चिंतित हैं। ओलंपिक करीब है और हम सही दिशा में तैयारी शुरू करना चाहते हैं। विनेश ने कहा कि आप लोग देख सकते हैं कि इतने गंभीर आरोपों के बावजूद महासंघ कौन चला रहा है। हमारे पास केवल सत्य की शक्ति है, जो मुझे लगता है कि पर्याप्त नहीं है। हम न्याय की मांग कर रहे हैं और विरोध जारी रखेंगे।
