768 ईस्वी में 9 अक्टूबर को कार्लोमन प्रथम (कार्लमैन) को राजा बना। 768 से 771 में अपनी मृत्यु तक फ्रैंक्स का राजा रहा। वह पेपिन द शॉर्ट और लाओन के बर्ट्राडा का दूसरा जीवित पुत्र था और शारलेमेन का छोटा भाई था। उसकी मृत्यु के बाद शारलेमेन राजा बना और उसने पूरे फ्रांसिया पर कब्जा करने और अन्य राज्यों में अपना विस्तार शुरू करने का अभियान चलाया।

892 तर्मेज, उज्बेकिस्तान में अबू ईसा मुहम्मद इब्न ईसा अस-सुलामी अद-सारिर अल-बुघी /-तिर्मिधि का निधन हुआ। अल तिर्मिधी विख्यात इस्लामी विद्वान और टर्मेज से हदीस के संग्रहकर्ता थे। उन्होंने अल-जामी अस-सहीह लिखा, जो सुन्नी इस्लाम में छह विहित हदीस संकलनों में से एक है।

1446 कोरियाई हंगल वर्णमाला का पहली बार प्रकाशन हुआ।

1701 न्यू हेवेन, कनेक्टिकट, अमेरिका में येल विश्वविद्यालय स्थापित किया गया। यह दुनिया के शीर्ष प्रतिष्ठित विश्वविद्यालयों में से एक है। इसका शुरुआती नाम कालेजियट स्कूल आफ कनेक्टिकट था। समाजशास्र का अध्यन सर्वप्रथम येल विश्वविद्यालय में सन् 1836 में शुरू हुआ। अब Yale University कला और विज्ञान में 2000 अंडर ग्रेजुएट प्रोग्राम ऑफर करता है। इसमें 65 से ज्यादा विभाग और कोर्स हैं। विश्वविद्यालय में 3600 फैकल्टीज और 11000 छात्र हैं, जिनमें 1872 विदेशी छात्र हैं।

1708 स्वीडन और रूस की विश्व विख्यात लड़ाई (जिसे डिनाइपर के नाम से जाना जाता है) स्वीडन की पराजय के साथ समाप्त हुई।

1740 डच गवर्नर जनरल एड्रियान वाल्केनियर ने बताविआ के 8,000 चीन के लोगों की हत्या करने आदेश दिया।

1771 व्यापारी जहाज व्होवा मारिया फिनलैंड के तट के पास डूब गया।

1806 श्लेज की लड़ाई में फ्रेंको - प्रशियन का  पहला संघर्ष हुआ। प्रशियाई सेना को फ्रांसीसी सेना ने आसानी से पराजित किया।

1812 युद्ध के दौरान लेफ्टिनेंट जेसी डंकन इलियट के नेतृत्व में अमेरिकी नौसेनिकों ने दो ब्रिटिश युद्धपोतों, एचएमएस डेट्रायट और एचएमएस कैलेडोनिया को पकड़ लिया।

1826 हिंदी इतिहासकार और साहित्यकार राजा लक्ष्मण सिंह का जन्म हुआ।

1852 विश्व प्रसिद्ध जर्मन रसायनज्ञ और 1902 में रसायन विज्ञान में नोबेल पुरस्कार प्राप्त करने वाले हरमन एमिल लुई फिशर का जन्म हुआ। फिशर ने फिशर एस्टरीफिकेशन की खोज की। उन्होंने फिशर प्रक्षेपण भी विकसित किया, जो असममित कार्बन परमाणुओं को चित्रित करने का एक प्रतीकात्मक तरीका है। उन्होंने एंजाइम क्रिया के ताला - चाबी तंत्र की परिकल्पना पेश की।

1874 सभी देशों के बीच चिट्ठियों के आवागमन और जनरल पोस्टल यूनियन के गठन हेतु बर्न, स्विटजरलैंड में 22 देशों ने एक संधि पर हस्ताक्षर किये। तभी से 9 अक्टूबर को विश्व डाक दिवस मनाना शुरू हुआ।

1877 उड़ीसा के प्रसिद्ध स्वतंत्रता सेनानी, कवि, लेखक, पत्रकार और सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता पंडित गोपाबंधु दास का जन्म हुआ।

1876 स्कॉटिश वैज्ञानिक अलेक्जेंडर ग्राहम बेल और उनके सहयोगी थॉमस वाट्सन ने पहली बार लंबे समय तक टेलीफोन पर बातचीत की। दोनों के बीच दो मील की दूरी थी।

1888 उन्नीसवीं सदी की अमेरिका की सबसे ऊंची इमारत वाशिंगटन डी. सी. में वाशिंगटन स्मारक जनता के लिए खोला गया।

1897 तमिलनाडु के प्रसिद्ध स्वतंत्रता सेनानी और मुख्यमंत्री हुए मिनजुर भक्तवत्सलम का जन्म हुआ।

1911 चीन में एक आकस्मिक बम विस्फोट से किंग राजवंश के खिलाफ वुचांग विद्रोह शुरू इसे शिन्हाई क्रांति कहा गया।

1923 भारत के प्रसिद्ध अमीर व्यक्ति एवं कारोबारी, उद्योगपति तथा महिंद्रा समूह के मुखिया हुए केशव महिंद्रा का जन्म शिमला में हुआ। आजकल उनके पोते आनंद महिंद्रा महिंद्रा समूह के मुखिया हैं।

1924 तमिलनाडु के प्रसिद्ध क्रांतिकारी, सैनिक, सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता और बाद में भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के नेता हुए इमानुवेल रविंद्रर यानी इमानुएल शेखरन का जन्म सेल्लूर में हुआ।

1927 जाने माने भारतीय कानूनविद, तमिलनाडु के एडवोकेट जनरल और श्रीमती इंदिरा गांधी एवं राजीव गांधी सरकार के समय भारत के आॅडीटर जनरल रहे केशव पारासरन का जन्म श्रीरंगम में हुआ।

1930 अमेरिका में पहली महिला पायलट लॉरा इंगल्स अकेले अंतरमहाद्वीपीय उड़ान को पूरा करके कैलिफोर्निया के ग्लेनडेल में उतरी।

1944 प्रसिद्ध फिल्म निर्माता अख्तर हुसैन की बेटी जानी मानी बाॅलीवुड फिल्म अभिनेत्री जाहिदा हुसैन का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1945 बंगाली एवं हिंदी सिनेमा की 1960 एवं 1970 के दशक की प्रसिद्ध अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल सुमिता सान्याल का जन्म दार्जिलिंग में हुआ।

1946 जाने माने ब्रिटिश फिल्म एवं टेलीविजन अभिनेता राॅबिन स्टीवर्ट का जन्म कलकत्ता में हुआ। इसी दिन वर्जीनिया के पीट्सबर्ग में पहले इलेक्ट्रिक कंबल की बिक्री हुई।

1949 भारतीय प्रादेशिक सेना का गठन हुआ। ब्रिटिश सरकार ने इंडियन टेरिटोरियल एक्ट के आधार पर इस सेना के गठन का रास्ता साफ किया था। स्वतंत्रता प्राप्ति के पश्चात भारत के पहले गवर्नर जनरल सी राजगोपालाचारी ने औपचारिक तौर पर इसकी स्थापना की।

1953 ब्रिटिश सरकार ने गुयाना के संविधान को निलंबित कर दिया। इसी दिन जानी मानी इतिहासकार और पटना विश्वविद्यालय में प्रोफेसर हुईं पापिया घोष का जन्म हुआ।

1958 जाने माने अमेरिकी समलैंगिक एलजीबीटी अधिकार कार्यकर्ता उर्वशी वैद्य का जन्म दिल्ली में हुआ।

1962 ब्रिटेन के चंगुल से युगांडा आजाद हुआ। युगांडा 9 अक्टूबर को यूनाइटेड किंगडम से स्वतंत्रता का जश्न मनाता है।

1963 सैफुद्दीन किचलू का निधन हुआ। प्रसिद्ध स्वतंत्रता सेनानी किचलू पहले भारतीय थे, जिन्हें अंतरराष्ट्रीय शांति के लिए सोवियत संघ के लेनिन अवार्ड से सम्मानित किया गया।

1965 जाने माने बांग्ला फिल्म अभिनेता, गायक, गीतकार और पटकथा लेखक सिलाजीत मजूमदार का जन्म कलकत्ता में हुआ।

1968 तमिलनाडु के प्रमुख राजनेता, सांसद, केंद्रीय मंत्री रहे पीएमके यानी पट्टाली मक्कल काचि पार्टी के प्रमुख नेता अंबुमणि रामदास का जन्म पांडिचेरी में हुआ।

1970 बंबई के भाभा परमाणु अनुसंधान केन्द्र में यूरेनियम 233 का उत्पादन शुरु हुआ।

1974 तेलुगू सिनेमा के विख्यात हास्य कलाकार, पटकथा लेखक, अभिनेता हर्ष वर्धन का जन्म हुआ।

1976 बंबई और लंदन के बीच संपर्क के साथ ही अंतरराष्ट्रीय डायरेक्ट डायलिंग टेलीफोन सेवा की शुरुआत हुई।

1983 दक्षिण कोरिया के राष्ट्रपति चुन डू-ह्वान बर्मा के रंगून में एक जानलेवा हमले में बाल-बाल बचे।

1987 फिल्म भिंडी बाजार से सुपरिचित हुई खूबसूरत, बोल्ड फिल्म अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल वेदिता प्रताप सिंह का जन्म इलाहाबाद में हुआ।

1990 भारत में ही निर्मित पहला तेल टैंकर मोतीलाल नेहरू भारतीय जहाजरानी निगम को सौंपा गया। इसका निर्माण कोच्चि शिपयार्ड लिमिटेड ने किया था।

1991 सूमो पहलवानी के 1500 बरस के इतिहास में पहली बार जापान से बाहर इसका आयोजन किया गया। ब्रिटेन में लंदन के प्रसिद्ध रॉयल अल्बर्ट हाल में जापान फेस्टिवल के अंतर्गत इस पहलवानी स्पर्धा का आयोजन किया गया।

1997 इटली के वामपंथी रुझान वाले लेखक, सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता और व्यंग्यकार दारियो फो को साहित्य का नोबेल पुरस्कार देने की घोषणा की गई।

1998 पाकिस्तान की नेशनल असेंबली यानी केंद्रीय संसद ने इस्लामी शरीयत कानून को देश के सर्वाच्च कानून के रूप में अनुमोदित किया।

2004 अफगानिस्तान के इतिहास में पहली बार लोगों ने अपनी पसंद का राष्ट्रपति चुनने के लिए मतदान किया। चुनाव में हामिद करजई विजयी रहे। देश में 2001 में तालिबान के पतन के बाद करजई ने अंतरिम राष्ट्रपति का दायित्व निभाया था।

2005 यूरोपीय उपग्रह क्रायोसेट का प्रक्षेपण विफल हुआ।

2006 प्रमुख दलित चिंतक, राजनेता और बहुजन समाज पार्टी के संस्थापक कांशीराम का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन गूगल ने यू-ट्यूब के अधिग्रहण की घोषणा की। इसी दिन भारत में समता पार्टी की प्रमुख जया जेटली पर वर्ष 2000 में इजराइली कंपनी से करोड़ों रुपए के डिफेंस कॉन्ट्रैक्ट में रिश्वत लेने का आरोप लगा। इसी दिन 2006 में उत्तर कोरिया ने कथित तौर पर आईसीटी का पहला परमाणु उपकरण परीक्षण किया।

2009 अमेरिकी अंतरिक्ष एजेंसी नासा ने लूनर क्रेटर ऑब्जर्वेशन एंड सेंसिंग सेटेलाइट एलसीआरओएसएस को प्रक्षेपित किया।

2012 तालिबान लड़ाकों ने पाकिस्तान में लड़कियों की शिक्षा की हिमायत करने वाली 15 बरस की मुखर वक्ता मलाला यूसुफजई को सिर में गोली मारी। मलाला इस घातक हमले में बच गईं। बाद में वे विश्व चर्चित हुईं और उन्हें शांति के लिए नोबल पुरस्कार भी मिला। इसी दिन यूनान की राजधानी एथेंस में लगभग 25,000 लोगों ने जर्मन चांसलर एंजेला मर्केल के यूनान की सरकारी यात्रा करने के विोध में प्रदर्शन किया।

2014 अमेरिकी शेयर बाजार में तेज गिरावट हुई एस एंड पी 500 और डॉव जोन्स इंडस्ट्रियल एवरेज में लगभग 2 प्रतिशत की कमी आई।

2015 बालीवुड फिल्मों के जाने माने संगीतकार रवीन्द्र जैन का निधन हुआ।

2016 अराकन रोहिंग्या साल्वेशन आर्मी ने बांग्लादेश-म्यांमार सीमा पर म्यांमार सुरक्षा बलों पर अपना पहला हमला किया।

2019 तुर्की ने उत्तर-पूर्वी सीरिया में अपना सैन्य आक्रमण शुरू किया।

2021 प्रवर्तन निदेशालय (ईडी) ने शनिवार को कथित ठग सुकेश चंद्रशेखर और उनकी पत्नी व अभिनेत्री लीना मारिया पॉल को 200 करोड़ रुपये के धनशोधन मामले में तीन दिन की हिरासत में ले लिया। मामला एक उद्योगपति की पत्नी से रंगदारी वसूलने से संबंधित है। सुकेश चंद्रशेखर और उनके सहयोगियों से जुड़े विभिन्न स्थानों पर तलाशी ली गई थी, जिसमें पता चला कि तमिलनाडु में संपत्ति, जहां लीना रहती थी, चंद्रशेखर के निदेर्शो के अनुसार जितेंद्र कोठारी की कंपनी श्री जय जिनेंद्र कंस्ट्रक्शन लिमिटेड द्वारा खरीदी गई थी। संपत्ति की खरीद के लिए सभी भुगतानों की व्यवस्था सुकेश ने अपने सहयोगियों के माध्यम से चेन्नई में नकद की थी। इस संबंध में की गई तलाशी के दौरान, धारा 17 पीएमएलए के तहत 16 हाई-एंड वाहनों को जब्त किया गया था और ये कारें या तो लीना पॉल की फर्मो के नाम पर हैं या तीसरे पक्ष के नाम पर हैं। जब ये संपत्तियां खरीदी गई थीं, सुकेश जेल में बंद था और लीना उन संपत्तियों का उपभोग रही थी। व्यवसायी और उसके भाई के खिलाफ दिल्ली पुलिस की आर्थिक अपराध शाखा और ईडी ने 2019 में मामला दर्ज किया था। तिहाड़ जेल में बंद चंद्रशेखर पर जेल के अंदर से 200 करोड़ रुपये का रंगदारी रैकेट चलाने का आरोप है। शुक्रवार को दिल्ली की एक अदालत ने ईडी को कारोबारी और उसकी पत्नी से जेल के अंदर पूछताछ करने और जरूरत पड़ने पर उन्हें गिरफ्तार करने की इजाजत दे दी। बाद में उन्हें गिरफ्तार कर लिया गया।

892 Abu Isa Muhammad ibn Isa as-Sulami ad-Sarir al-Bughi /-Tirmidhi died in Tarmez, Uzbekistan. Al-Tirmidhi was a noted Islamic scholar and collector of hadith from the Termez. He wrote al-Jami'i as-Sahih, one of the six canonical hadith collections in Sunni Islam.

1446 The Korean Hangul alphabet is first published.

1701 Yale University established in New Haven, Connecticut, US. It is one of the top prestigious universities in the world. Its initial name was Collegiate School of Connecticut.

1876 Scottish scientist Alexander Graham Bell and his colleague Thomas Watson hold the first long-term telephone conversation. There was a distance of two miles between the two.

1888 The Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., America's tallest nineteenth-century building, opens to the public.

1897 Minjur Bhaktavatsalam, famous freedom fighter and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, was born.

1911 An accidental bomb explosion in China begins the Wuchang Rebellion against the Qing Dynasty, called the Xinhai Revolution.

1923 Keshav Mahindra, India's famous rich man and businessman, industrialist and head of Mahindra Group, was born in Shimla. Nowadays his grandson Anand Mahindra heads the Mahindra Group.

1924 Emmanuel Sekharan, Tamil Nadu's famous revolutionary, soldier, social worker and later leader of the Indian National Congress, was born in Sellur.

1927 Keshav Parasaran, a renowned Indian jurist, Advocate General of Tamil Nadu and Auditor General of India during the tenure of Mrs. Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi government, was born in Srirangam.

1930 Laura Ingalls, the first female pilot in the United States, lands in Glendale, California, completing a solo transcontinental flight.

1944 Famous Bollywood film actress Zahida Hussain, daughter of famous film producer Akhtar Hussain, was born in Bombay.

1945 Sumita Sanyal, a famous actress and model of Bengali and Hindi cinema in the 1960s and 1970s, was born in Darjeeling.

1946 Well-known British film and television actor Robin Stewart was born in Calcutta. On this day, the first electric blanket was sold in Pittsburgh, Virginia.

1949 Indian Territorial Army was formed. The British Government had cleared the way for the formation of this army on the basis of the Indian Territorial Act. It was formally established by C Rajagopalachari, the first Governor General of India after independence.

1953 The British government suspended the Constitution of Guyana. On this day, Papia Ghosh, a well-known historian and professor at Patna University, was born.

1958 Urvashi Vaidya, a well-known American LGBT rights activist, was born in Delhi.

1962 Uganda became independent from the clutches of Britain. Uganda celebrates independence from the United Kingdom on 9 October.

1963 Saifuddin Kitchlu passed away. Renowned freedom fighter Kitchlew was the first Indian to be awarded the Soviet Union's Lenin Award for international peace.

1965 Silajit Majumdar, well-known Bengali film actor, singer, lyricist and screenwriter, was born in Calcutta.

1968 Anbumani Ramadoss, prominent politician, MP, Union Minister of Tamil Nadu and prominent leader of PMK i.e. Pattali Makkal Katchi Party, was born in Pondicherry.

1970 Production of uranium 233 started at Bhabha Atomic Research Center in Bombay.

1974 Harsh Vardhan, famous comedian, screenwriter and actor of Telugu cinema, was born.

1976 International direct dialing telephone service begins with connectivity between Bombay and London.

1983 South Korean President Chun Doo-hwan survives a deadly attack in Rangoon, Burma.

Beautiful, bold film actress and model Vedita Pratap Singh, who became known from the 1987 film Bhindi Bazaar, was born in Allahabad.

1990 The first oil tanker built in India was handed over to Motilal Nehru Indian Shipping Corporation. It was built by Kochi Shipyard Limited.

1991 It was organized outside Japan for the first time in the 1500-year history of sumo wrestling. In Britain, this wrestling competition was organized under the Japan Festival at the famous Royal Albert Hall in London.

2021 The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday took alleged swindler Sukesh Chandrashekhar and his wife and actress Leena Maria Paul into three-day custody in a Rs 200 crore money laundering case. The case pertains to extortion from the wife of an industrialist. Searches were conducted at various locations linked to Sukesh Chandrasekhar and his associates, which revealed that the property in Tamil Nadu, where Leena lived, was purchased by Jitendra Kothari's company Sri Jai Jinendra Construction Limited as per Chandrasekhar's directions. All payments for the purchase of the property were arranged by Sukesh through his associates in cash in Chennai. During the searches conducted in this regard, 16 high-end vehicles were seized under Section 17 PMLA and these cars are either in the name of Leena Paul's firms or in the name of third parties. When these properties were purchased, Sukesh was in jail and Leena was enjoying those properties. A case was registered against the businessman and his brother by the Economic Offenses Wing of Delhi Police and ED in 2019. Chandrashekhar, lodged in Tihar Jail, is accused of running an extortion racket worth Rs 200 crore from inside the jail. On Friday, a Delhi court allowed the ED to interrogate the businessman and his wife inside the jail and arrest them if necessary. He was later arrested.
