460 यरुशलम में एलिया यूडोसिया ऑगस्टा का निधन हुआ। यूडोसिया का जन्म एथेंस, यूनान में हुआ था। इन्हें सेंट यूडोसिया भी कहा जाता है। यह पूर्वी रोमन साम्राज्ञी बनीं सम्राट थियोडोसियस द्वितीय से विवाह के साथ। बीजान्टिन साम्राज्य की शुरुआत के दौरान ईसाई धर्म के उदय को समझने में प्रमुख यूनानी ऐतिहासिक व्यक्तित्व हैं। उनकी कविताओं और साहित्यिक कार्य के लिए उन्हें सम्मान दिया जाता है।

888 चीन के प्रभावशाली प्रशासक लिआंग राजवंश के तीसरे और आखिरी सम्राट झू जेन और पारंपरिक इतिहास में लिआंग के सम्राट मो तथा झू हुआंग का जन्म हुआ। 

1475 फ्लोरेंस, इटली में इतालवी मानवतावादी, कवि, नाटककार और इटली के टस्कनी में पुनर्जागरण काल के फ्लोरेंस में साहित्यिक व्यक्ति, ऊन व्यापारियों के एक धनी परिवार के सदस्य जियोवन्नी रुसेलाई (गियोवन्नी डि बर्नार्डो रुसेलाई) का जन्म हुआ। वह पोप लियो एक्स के चचेरे भाई, शक्तिशाली स्ट्रोजी और डी मेडिसी परिवार के दामाद थे। उनकी कविता ले आपी (द बीज) के लिए खासतौर पर याद किया जाता है, जो वर्सी स्किओल्टी (रिक्त छंद) में लिखी गई पहली कविताओं में से एक है।

1568 मुगल शहंशाह जलालुद्दीन मोहम्मद अकबर या अकबर दि ग्रेट ने अपने राज्य विस्तार के सिलसिले में राजस्थान के चित्तौड़गढ़ पर चढ़ाई की। पुराने समय में अधिकतर राजा या तो राज्य विस्तार के लिए दूसरे राज्यों पर धावा बोलते रहते थे या अपना राज्य बचाने के प्रयासों में लगे रहते थे।

1740 मारिया थेरेसा ऑस्ट्रिया, हंगरी और बोहेमिया की शासक बनीं।

1774 अंग्रेजों ने कलकत्ता को भारत की राजधानी बनाया। 1784 में इसी दिन 19वीं शताब्दी के मध्य में दो बार प्रधानमंत्री के रूप में कार्य करने वाले एक ब्रिटिश राजनेता विस्काउंट पामर्स्टनका जन्म हुआ।

1719 विश्वविख्यात जर्मन अर्थशास्त्री, गणितज्ञ व दार्शनिक गाटफ्रीड आखेनवाल का जन्म हुआ।

1803 अमेरिकी सीनेट ने मैक्सिको की खाड़ी वाले राज्य लुइसियाना को खरीदने की संधि की पुष्टि की।

1818 इंग्लैंड एवं अमेरिका ने 1818 की उस संधि पर हस्ताक्षर किए, जिसके तहत कनाडा-संयुक्त राज्य को प्रशांत महासागर और जंगल की झील के बीच 49 वें समानांतर पर बसाया जाना था।

1820 स्पेन ने अपने कब्जे वाले अमेरिका के फ्लोरिडा राज्य के हिस्से को 5 मिलियन डॉलर में संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका को बेचा।

1822 ब्रिटेन के विश्व प्रसिद्ध अखबार लंदन संडे टाइम्स का पहला अंक प्रकाशित हुआ।

1930 भारत में उच्च न्यायालय की प्रथम महिला न्यायाधीश बनीं लीला सेठ का जन्म हुआ।

1833 विख्यात अंग्रेजी कवि लॉर्ड अल्फ्रेड टेनीसन ने अपनी बहुचर्चित कविता ओलिसिज लिखी।

1855 आधुनिक गुजराती साहित्य के कथाकार, कवि, चिंतक, विवेचक, चरित्र लेखक तथा इतिहासकार गोवर्धनराम माधवराम त्रिपाठी का जन्म हुआ।

1864 अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति अब्राहम लिंकन ने थैंक्स गिविंग डे को राष्ट्रीय अवकाश घोषित किया। थैंक्सगिविंग डे, उत्तरी अमेरिका का एक पारंपरिक त्यौहार है, जो एक तरह का फसल पर्व है. अमेरिका में थैंक्सगिविंग डे को एक त्यौहार के रूप में मनाया जाता है। इस दिन राष्ट्रीय छुट्टी होती है। इस दिन लोग एक दूसरे का शुक्रिया अदा करते हैं और आने वाले साल के ईश्वर से प्रार्थना करते है। यह किसानों और मेहनतकशों के लिए सर्वाधिक धन्यवाद ज्ञापित करने के लिए है। भारत में जैसे ईद एवं दीपावली पर लोग कपड़े तथा अन्य सामान खरीदने के लिए प्रयासरत और उत्वाहित रहते हैं इसी प्रकार अमेरिकी थैंक्स गिविंग डे पर अमेरिका में होता है। हालांकि यह अलग-अलग अमेरिकी राज्यों में अलग-अलग तिथियों में भी होता है। इसदिन गरीबों को भोजन, वस्त्रादि भी उपलब्ध कराए जाते हैं। 1865 के बाद इसका प्रचलन तेजी से बढ़ा। आमतौर पर अमेरिका में नवंबर के चौथे बृहस्पतिवार को होता है।

1880 नीदरलैंड की राजधानी एम्सटर्डम में मुक्त विश्वविद्यालय की स्थापना हुई।

1891 प्रमुख अमेरिकी नगर न्यूयॉर्क के मैडिसन स्क्वायर गार्डन में पहला अंतर्राष्ट्रीय 6 दिन की बाइक रेस शुरू हुई।

1904 चिली और बोलीविया ने शांति और मित्रता की संधि पर हस्ताक्षर किए।

1905 रूस में 11 दिन तक चली ऐतिहासिक देशव्यापी हड़ताल की शुरुआत हुई।

1920 पश्चिम बंगाल के मुख्यमंत्री और बाद में पंजाब के राज्यपाल रहे कांग्रेस के वरिष्ठ नेता सिद्धार्थ शंकर राय का जन्म हुआ।

1923 भारतीय कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी (मार्क्सवादी) के राजनीतिज्ञ और केरल के ग्यारहवें मुख्यमंत्री हुए वी. एस. अच्युतानंदन का जन्म हुआ।

1940 नीदरलैंड सरकार ने राशन में अपने नागरिकों को पनीर भी देना शुरू किया।

1941 द्वितीय विश्व युद्ध में जर्मन सैनिकों ने हिटलर शासित नाजी जर्मनी के कब्जे वाले रूस के सर्बिया में क्रुगुजेवैक में हजारों लोगों का संहार किया।

1946 वियतनाम की डेमोक्रेटिक रिपब्लिकन सरकार ने इस 20 अक्टूबर के दिन को महिला दिवस के रूप में घोषित किया।

1947 अमेरिका और पाकिस्तान ने पहली बार राजनयिक संबंध स्थापित किए थे।

1957 भारतीय सिनेमा के सर्वाधिक प्रसिद्ध और सफलतम पार्श्व गायकों में से एक कुमार सानु का जन्म हुआ।

1962 चीन ने भारत पर हमला किया और अरुणाचल प्रदेश के रास्ते भारत के भीतर प्रवेश का प्रयास किया। भारत 1947 में आजाद हुआ और 1949 में चीन रिपब्लिक बना। शुरुआत में दोस्ताना रिश्ते थे। कहा जाता है कि भारत ने चीन की खातिर संयुक्त राष्ट्र के सुरक्षा परिषद की स्थायी सदस्यता ठुकरा दी थी। प्रधानमंत्री नेहरू ने हिंदी-चीनी भाई-भाई का नारा देकर दोस्ती बढ़ाई थी। दोनों देशों के बीच तनाव तब बढ़ा, जब 1959 में भारत ने दलाई लामा को शरण दी। 1962 तक भारत चीन के बीच विवाद अपने शिखर पर पहुंच चुका था। 20 अक्टूबर 1962 को चीन की पीपुल्स लिबरेशन आर्मी ने भारत पर हमला कर दिया। भारत युद्ध के लिए तैयार ही नहीं था। चीन के 80 हजार जवानों का मुकाबला करने भारत ने 10-20 हजार सैनिक उतारे थे। युद्ध एक महीना चला और 21 नवंबर 1962 को चीन ने जब सीजफायर की घोषणा की, तब तक भारत को काफी नुकसान हो चुका था। एक महीने चले युद्ध के बीच नेहरू ने देशवासियों को लड़ाई के पहले दिन यानी 20 अक्टूबर को ही संबोधित किया।

1967 वियतनाम युद्ध में अमेरिका की भागीदारी के खिलाफ प्रदर्शन और असहमति व्यक्त करने के उद्देश्य से प्रदर्शनों के पांचवें दिन लगभग 10,000 प्रदर्शनकारी आॅकलैंड, कैलिफोर्निया की सड़कों पर निकले।

1969 भारत सरकार में केंद्रीय मंत्रिमंडल में कृषि और किसान कल्याण राज्य मंत्री, भाजपा नेता सुदर्शन भगत का जन्म हुआ।

1970 सोमालिया के जननेता सैयद बर्रे ने सोमालिया को समाजवादी राज्य घोषित किया।

2007 अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति जॉर्ज डब्ल्यू बुश ने म्यांमार बर्मा के सैन्य शासकों के विरुद्ध नये प्रतिबंध लगाने की घोषणा की।

2011 लीबिया पर 40 साल एकछत्र राज करने वाले तानाशाह कर्नल मोअम्मर गद्दाफी को गृहयुद्ध में मार डाला गया। उन्होंने करीब 20 लाख लीबियाई नागरिकों को घर बैठे जीने के लिए सभी जरूरी सुविधाएं मुहैया कराईं लेकिन बहुत राजनीतिक लोग उन्हें लंबे समय से उखाड़ फेंकने के प्रयासों में लगे थे। अंदरखाने अमेरिकी समर्थन वाले लंबे प्रदर्शन और विप्लव के बाद उन्हें विद्रोही सैन्य हमलों में मार डाला गया।
