31 ईस्वी में 18 अक्टूबर को जेमोनियन स्टेयर्स, रोम, इटली में लूसियस एलियस सेजेनस को फांसी दी गई।। लूसियस को सेजेनस के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। वह रोमन सैनिक, मित्र और रोमन सम्राट टिबेरियस का विश्वासपात्र था। जन्म से इक्विट्स वर्ग से सेजेनस प्रेटोरियन गार्ड के प्रीफेक्ट के रूप में सत्ता में आया। 14 ई.पू. से 31 ई.पू. में राजद्रोह के लिए फांसी दिए जाने तक कमांडर था।

33 इस्वी में 18 अक्टूबर को एग्रीपिना द एल्डर को राजमहल से निकाल दिया गया। वह जूलियो-क्लाउडियन राजवंश की प्रमुख सदस्य थी एग्रीपिना मार्कस विप्सैनियस एग्रीप्पा और ऑगस्टस की बेटी जूलिया द एल्डर की बेटी थीं। उसके भाई लुसियस और गयुस सीजर ऑगस्टस के दत्तक पुत्र थे। एग्रीपिना का अपने पुत्रों नीरो और ड्रूसस की मृत्यु से दिल टूट गया, और इस पर टिबेरियस को एग्रीपिना द्वारा पांडाटेरिया द्वीप पर निर्वासित कर दिया गया। वृद्धावस्था, असुविधाओं और भूख से एग्रीपिना की मृत्यु हो गई।

320 यूनानी दार्शनिक अलेक्जेंड्रिया के पप्पस ने सूर्य के ग्रहण पर द ग्रेट एस्ट्रोनॉमर (अल्मागेस्ट) टिप्पणी लिखी।

614 राजा च्लोथर द्वितीय ने पेरिस के आदेश फ्रैंकिश मैग्ना कार्टा (एडिक्टम क्लोटाचारी) को लागू किया। इस कानून या राजाज्ञा से फ्रैंकिश रईसों के अधिकारों की रक्षा यहूदियों को फ्रैंकिश साम्राज्य में सभी नागरिक अधिकारों और रोजगार से महरूम किया।

1009 फातिमिद खलीफा अल-हकीम अम्र अल्लाह के निर्देश पर उनके लड़ाकों ने, यरूशलेम चारदीवारी मध्य स्थित प्राचीन पवित्र ईसाई चर्च को तहस-नहस किया।

1081 बीजेंटाइन-नॉर्मन युद्ध में अपुल्लिया और कैलाब्रिया के ड्यूक रॉबर्ट गुइस्कार्ड सेना नॉर्मन्स ने, इलारिया दिर्रैचियम शहर के पास बीजेंटाइन को परास्त किया।

1281 पोप मार्टिन चतुर्थ ने सिसिली के ताज पर कब्जे के लिए आरागॉन के राजा पीटर तृतीय को बहिष्कृत कर दिया।

1356 आल्प्स के उत्तर में आए जबरदस्त ऐतिहासिक भूकंप से स्विट्जरलैंड के बेसल शहर नष्ट हुआ और व्यापक इलाके में भारी तबाही हुई।

1386 हीडलबर्ग, जर्मनी में महान रोमन साम्राज्य द्वारा यूनिवर्सिटी आॅफ हीडलबर्ग की स्थापना की गई। हीडलबर्ग यूनिवर्सिटी हीडलबर्ग बाडेन-वुर्टेमबर्ग, जर्मनी में एक सार्वजनिक अनुसंधान विश्वविद्यालय है। नगरीय पोप छठी के निर्देश पर 1386 में स्थापित हीडलबर्ग जर्मनी का सबसे पुराना विश्वविद्यालय है और दुनिया के सबसे पुराने निरंतर कार्यरत विश्वविद्यालयों में से एक है। यह पवित्र रोमन साम्राज्य में स्थापित तीसरा विश्वविद्यालय था।

1564 1492 में कोलंबस द्वारा अमेरिका खोज लिए जाने के बाद यूरोपीय देशों ने अमेरिका की लूट के लिए दौड़ मचा दी। ब्रिटिश नौसैनिक कमांडर जॉन हाॅकिन्स ने दूसरी बार अमेरिका की यात्रा शुरू की।

1572 स्पेनिश फौज ने नीदरलैंड के नगर मास्ट्रिच पर हमला कर दिया।

1648 उत्तर अमेरिकी उपनिवेशों में बोस्टन शूमेकर्स नाम से पहला श्रम संगठन बना।

1850 साउथसी, इंग्लैंड में बेसिल हॉल चेम्बरलेन का जन्म हुआ। वे ब्रिटिश अकादमिक और जापान मामलों के विशेषज्ञ हुए। वह टोक्यो इंपीरियल यूनिवर्सिटी में जापानी भाषा के प्रोफेसर थे और 19वीं सदी के अंत में जापान में सक्रिय अग्रणी ब्रिटिश जापान विज्ञानियों में से एक थे। उनका सर्वाधिक प्रसिद्ध ग्रंथ एक खंड वाला विश्वकोश थिंग्स जापानीज जो पहली बार 1890 में प्रकाशित हुआ और फिर उसके बाद उन्होंने कई बार इसे संशोधित किया। उनकी रुचियाँ विविध थीं। उनके कार्यों में फ्रेंच में कविता का संकलन शामिल है।

1865 दो बार ब्रिटेन के प्रधानमंत्री रहे प्रभावशाली ब्रिटिश राजनेता विस्काउंट पामर्स्टन का निधन हुआ।

1878 विख्यात आविष्कारक और वैज्ञानिक थॉमस एल्वा एडीसन ने घरेलू उपयोग के लिए बिजली उपलब्ध करायी।

1892 शिकागो से न्यूयाॅर्क के बीच अमेरिका में पहली लंबी दूरी की वाणिज्यिक फोन लाइन शुरू हुई।

1898 अमेरिका ने प्यूर्तो रिको को स्पेन से अपने कब्जे में लिया।

1900 काउंट बर्नार्ड वॉन बुलो जर्मनी के चांसलर बने।

1922 ब्रिटिश ब्रॉडकास्टिंग कंपनी की स्थापना हुई, जिसका नाम बाद में बदलकर ब्रिटिश ब्रॉडकास्टिंग कॉर्पोरेशन किया गया, इसे हम आमतौर पर बीबीसी के नाम से जानते हैं। बीबीसी दुनिया की सबसे प्रतिष्ठित रेडियो और टीवी समाचार प्रसारण सेवा है।

1925 उत्तर प्रदेश एवं उत्तराखंड के मुख्यमंत्री, केंद्र में मंत्री और आंध्र प्रदेश के राज्यपाल रहे नारायण दत्त तिवारी का जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन 1925 भारत के प्रसिद्ध रंगकर्मी, रंगमंच निर्देशक और नेशनल स्कूल आॅफ ड्रामा के पूर्व निदेशक इब्राहिम अल्काजी का जन्म हुआ।

1929 पर्सन्स डे कनाडा में एक वार्षिक उत्सव है, जो 18 अक्टूबर को मनाया जाता है। यह दिन एडवर्ड्स बनाम कनाडा (अटॉर्नी जनरल) के मामले की याद दिलाता है, जिसे आमतौर पर द पर्सन्स केस के रूप में जाना जाता है - एक प्रसिद्ध कनाडाई संवैधानिक मामला जिसका फैसला 18 अक्टूबर, 1929 को हुआ था। इंपीरियल प्रिवी काउंसिल की न्यायिक समिति, जो उस समय कनाडा के लिए सर्वोच्च न्यायिक निकाय था, पर्सन्स केस में माना गया कि महिलाएं कनाडा की सीनेट में बैठने के लिए पात्र थीं। वैसे ये कोई नागरिक अवकाश नहीं है लेकिन कनाडा भर में कई महिला समूह इस दिन को महत्वपूर्ण रूप से मनाते हैं, जिसमें महिला कानूनी शिक्षा और एक्शन फंड, सभी नागरिक अधिकारों की पात्र हैं।

1931 विख्यात आविष्कारक और वैज्ञानिक थॉमस अल्वा एडिसन का निधन हुआ। अमेरिकी वैज्ञानिक थॉमस एल्वा एडिसन का जन्म 11 फरवरी 1847 को हुआ था। उनके नाम 1,93 पेटेंट हैं जो बताते हैं कि वे कितने आविष्कारक थे। बचपन में गरीबी से गुजरने वाले महान वैज्ञानिक को बिजली के बल्ब की खोज के लिए जाना जाता है। एडिसन बल्ब बनाने में 10 हजार बार से अधिक बार असफल हुए। इस पर उन्होंने यह भी कहा था कि मैं कभी नाकाम नहीं हुआ बल्कि मैंने 10,000 ऐसे रास्ते निकाले जो मेरे काम नहीं आए।

1940 कलकत्ता के बंगाली सिनेमा, टेलीविजन और रंगमंच के प्रमुख अभिनेता प्राण बंधोपाध्याय का जन्म जशोर, बंग्लादेश में हुआ।

1944 द्वितीय विश्व युद्ध के दौरान नाजी जर्मनी से चेकोस्लोवाकिया की स्वतंत्रता के लिये सोवियत संघ ने लड़ाई शुरु की। इसी दिन भारत के प्रमुख कारोबारी, उद्योगपति हाउसिंग डेवलेपमेंट फाइनेंस कारपोरेशन के अध्यक्ष दीपक पारेख का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1950 प्रसिद्ध फिल्म अभिनेता ओम पुरी (ओम प्रकाश पुरी) का जन्म हुआ।

1954 टेक्सास इंस्ट्रूमेंट्स कंपनी ने पहले ट्रांजिस्टर रेडियो रीजेंसी टीआर-1 इंडियानापोलिस, इंडियाना अमेरिका में प्रस्तुत किया।

1958 हिंदी फिल्मों की जानी मानी अभिनेत्री और माॅडल काजल किरण का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1963 कंजरवेटिव पार्टी में नेतृत्व को लेकर हुए मतभेद, आंतरिक कलह के बाद लॉर्ड होम को ब्रिटेन के अगले प्रधानमंत्री के रूप में चुना गया।

1965 विवादास्पद धार्मिक इस्लामिक विद्वान, वक्ता और टेलीविजन शो प्रस्तोता, पीस टीवी नेटवर्क और इस्लामिक रिसर्च फाउंडेशन के संस्थापक डाॅ. ज़ाकिर नाइक का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1967 हेंस ए बेथे को भौतिकी का नोबेल पुरस्कार दिया गया।

1968 भारत के विख्यात क्रिकेट, बाॅलर नरेंद्र हिरवानी का जन्म गोरखपुर में हुआ।

1972 पहले मल्टी-पर्पज हेलीकॉप्टर एसए-315 का बेंगलुरु में हवाई परीक्षण।

1974 जाने माने भारतीय कथा लेखक, फिक्शन राइटर अमीश त्रिपाठी का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1976 विलियम एन लिप्सकोंब जूनियर को रसायन का नोबेल पुरस्कार दिया गया। इसी दिन भारत के प्रसिद्ध तेलुगू साहित्यकार विश्वनाथ सत्यनारायण का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन नाट्य लेखक, पटकथाकार, अभिनेता और इंस्टाग्राम माॅडल राहुल सिंह का जन्म उदयपुर, राजस्थान में हुआ।

1977 जाने माने बाॅलीवुड फिल्म अभिनेता कुणाल कपूर का जन्म बंबई में हुआ। इसी दिन बंबई में जाने माने फिल्म एवं टेलीविजन अभिनेता स्वप्निल जोशी का जन्म हुआ।

1978 मलयालम, कन्नड़, हिंदी, तेलुगू आदि भारतीय भाषाओं की बोल्ड, खूबसूरत, लोकप्रिय फिल्म अभिनेत्री, माॅडल, फिल्म निर्मात्री बहुप्रतिभावान ज्योतिका सर्वनन का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1980 पहली हिमालय कार रैली बंबई के ब्रेबोर्न स्टेडियम से शुरु हुई।

1984 बहुचर्चित फिल्म स्लम डाॅग मिलेनियर से चर्चा में आई ब्रिटिश, अमेरिकन, भारतीय फिल्म अभिनेत्री और माॅडल फ्रीडा सेलेना पिंटो का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1985 दुनिया भर में व्यापक विरोध के बावजूद दक्षिण अफ्रीका की गोरी सरकार द्वारा अश्वेत जनकवि एवं सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता, मानवाधिकारवादी बेंजामिन मोलोइस को फांसी पर चढ़ा दिया गया।

1988 भोजपुरी फिल्मों की लोकप्रिय खूबसूरत, बोल्ड अभिनेत्री एवं टेलीविजन धारावाहिकों की बहुप्रतिभावान कलाकार निधि झा का जन्म हुआ।

1991 दक्षिण पश्चिम एशिया और दक्षिणी पूर्वी यूरोप के मुहाने पर स्थित अजरबैजान ने तत्कालीन सोवियत संघ से स्वतंत्र होने की घोषणा की। अजरबैजान 18 अक्टूबर को सोवियत संघ से अजरबैजान की स्वतंत्रता का जश्न मनाता है। इस दिन अजरबैजान की सर्वोच्च परिषद ने सोवियत संघ से स्वतंत्रता की घोषणा को अपनाया था।

1993 खूबसूरत, बोल्ड और बहु प्रतिभावान भारतीय फिल्म अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल आशना झवेरी का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1995 कोलंबिया के कार्टाजेना में गुट निरपेक्ष देशों का ग्यारहवां शिखर सम्मेलन प्रारंभ हुआ।

1996 स्वतंत्रता सेनानी रामकृष्ण खत्री का निधन हुआ।

1998 भारत और पाकिस्तान आणविक खतरे को रोकने के लिए सहमत हुए। 

2000 पहली बार श्रीलंका में विप{ाी सदस्य अनुरा भंडारनायके को संसद अध्य{ा बनाने की सहमति।

2004 प्रख्यात डाकू और चंदन तस्कर वीरप्पन यानी कूसे मुनिसामी वीरप्पन एक बड़े पुलिस आॅपरेशन में मारे गये। तमिलनाडु, केरल और कर्नाटक में उनका बड़ा खौफ था।

2005 पाकिस्तान के राष्ट्रपति परवेज मुशर्रफ ने नियंत्रण रेखा को भूकंप राहत कार्य के लिए खोलने का सुझाव दिया।

2007 आठ वर्ष के बाद बेनजीर भुट्टो अपने वतन पाकिस्तान लौटीं। बेनजीर भुट्टो की मोटर कार रैली में हुये आत्मघाती हमले में 139 लोगों की मौत हुई और 450 अन्य घायल हुए। भुट्टो बच गई। इसी दिन 2007 में सुदूर अंतरिक्ष में जीवन की तलाश के लिए हैटक्रीक इलाके सैन फ्रांसिस्को में एलेन टेलिस्कोप एरे एटीए लगाया गया।

2008 उत्तर प्रदेश की मुख्यमंत्री मायावती ने रायबरेली की रेल कोच फैक्ट्री के लिए 189.25 करोड़ एकड़ भूमि रेल मंत्रालय को वापस की।

2009 एड्रियान कॉर्टलैंड्ट, डच एथोलॉजिस्ट और जीवविज्ञानी एवं नैंसी स्पेरो, अमेरिकी चित्रकार और अकादमिक का निधन हुआ।

2010 मैरियन ब्राउन, अमेरिकी सैक्सोफोनिस्ट और संगीतज्ञ एवं बिली रायमोंडी, अमेरिकी बेसबॉल खिलाड़ी का निधन हुआ। 2010 में इसी दिन ईरान यात्रा पर राजधानी तेहरान पहुंचे इराकी प्रधानमंत्री नूरी अल-मलिकी ने अमेरिका से छुटकारा पाने के लिए कहा।

2012 ब्रेन डैमेज, अमेरिकी पहलवान एवं डेविड एस. वेयर, अमेरिकी सैक्सोफोनिस्ट और संगीतकार का निधन हुआ।

2013 प्रसिद्ध अमेरिकी वकील और राजनीतिज्ञ, संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका के प्रतिनिधि सभा के 57वें अध्यक्ष टॉम फोले का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन 2013 में बम फिलिप्स, अमेरिकी फुटबॉल खिलाड़ी और कोच एवं एलन स्टेनली, कनाडाई आइस हॉकी खिलाड़ी और कोच, मारियानो लेब्रोन सविनोन, डोमिनिकन लेखक और अकादमिक का निधन हुआ। 2013 में इसी दिन सऊदी अरब ने कहा कि वह संयुक्त राष्ट्र सुरक्षा परिषद में चुने जाने के बाद सीट को अस्वीकार कर देगा क्योंकि संयुक्त राष्ट्र घोउटा रासायनिक हमले को समाप्त करने में असफल रहा था।

2014 एडवर्ड रेगन, अमेरिकी अकादमिक और राजनीतिज्ञ एवं सिडनी शापिरो, अमेरिकी-चीनी लेखक और अनुवादक का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन 2014 में केन्या में दुर्लभ उत्तरी प्रजाति का एक नर राइनो ओपजेता की कंजरवेंसी में मौत हुई। बताया गया कि यह जानवर केवल 6 पूरी दुनिया में हैं, जिनमें से केवल एक ही नर प्रजनन कर रहा है।

2015 प्रसिद्ध ऑस्ट्रेलियाई चित्रकार रॉबर्ट डिकर्सन, गमाल अल-घिटानी, मिस्र के पत्रकार और लेखक, रॉबर्ट डब्ल्यू फार्कुहार, अमेरिकी इंजीनियर, फ्रैंक वॉटकिंस, अमेरिकी बास वादक एवं पॉल वेस्ट, अंग्रेजी-अमेरिकी लेखक, कवि और अकादमिक का निधन हुआ।

2017 प्रसिद्ध इतालवी फुटबॉल खिलाड़ी तथा खेल प्रशासक मैरिनो पेरानी का निधन हुआ।

2018 लिस्बेथ पाल्मे, स्वीडिश बाल मनोवैज्ञानिक, यूनिसेफ की पूर्व अध्यक्ष एवं अब्देल रहमान स्वर अल-दहाब, सूडान के 5वें राष्ट्रपति का निधन हुआ।

2019 अंगोलन में प्रसिद्ध जन्मे पुर्तगाली फुटबॉलर रुई जोर्डाओ का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन अमेरिकी अंतरिक्ष एजेंसी नासा की अंतरिक्ष यात्री जेसिका मीर और क्रिस्टीना कोच ने पहली पूर्ण महिला स्पेसवॉक में भाग लिया, जब वे एक पावर कंट्रोलर को बदलने के लिए अंतर्राष्ट्रीय अंतरिक्ष स्टेशन से बाहर निकलीं। चिली की राजधानी सैंटियागो में दंगे खुली लड़ाई में बदल गए, शहर के लगभग सभी 164 मेट्रो स्टेशनों पर हमले की सूचना मिली। राष्ट्रपति सेबेस्टियन पिनेरा ने बाद में राजधानी में 15 दिनों के आपातकाल की घोषणा की।

2020 रेने फेल्बर, स्विस परिसंघ के 81वें राष्ट्रपति का निधन हुआ।

2021 चर्चित अमेरिकी सैन्य नेता और राजनेता, 65वें राज्य सचिव कॉलिन पॉवेल का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन केंद्रीय अन्वेषण ब्यूरो यानी सीबीआई कोर्ट ने रणजीत हत्या मामले में सिरसा के डेरा सच्चा सौदा के प्रमुख रहे गुरमीत राम रहीम सहित पांचों दोषियों को उम्र कैद की सजा सुनाई। राम रहीम के सहयोगी अन्य दोषियों में कृष्ण, अवतार, जसबीर और सबदिल शामिल है। अदालत ने राम रहीम पर 31 लाख रुपये और अन्य चारों पर 50-50 हजार रुपये का जुर्माना किया है। 10 जुलाई 2002 को डेरे की प्रबंधन समिति के सदस्य रहे कुरुक्षेत्र के गांव खानपुर कोलियां के रणजीत सिंह की हत्या कर दी गई थी। डेरा प्रबंधन को शक था कि रणजीत ने ही साध्वी यौन शोषण की गुमनाम चिट्ठी अपनी बहन से लिखवाई थी। पुलिस जांच से असंतुष्ट रणजीत के पिता ने जनवरी 2003 में हाईकोर्ट में याचिका दायर कर सीबीआई जांच की मांग की थी। 10 नवंबर 2003 को मामला सीबीआई को सौपा गया था। वर्ष 2007 में सीबीआई ने चार्जशीट दाखिल की थी। 

2022 प्रसिद्ध अमेरिकी राजनीतिज्ञ, साउथ डकोटा के 26वें गवर्नर हार्वे वोलमैन का निधन हुआ।

His works include anthologies of poetry in French.

2019 Famous Angolan-born Portuguese footballer Rui Jordão passes away. On the same day, US space agency NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Christina Koch took part in the first all-female spacewalk, when they left the International Space Station to replace a power controller. Riots in Chile's capital, Santiago, turned into open fighting, with attacks reported at almost all of the city's 164 metro stations. President Sebastián Piñera later declared a 15-day state of emergency in the capital.

2020 René Felber, 81st President of the Swiss Confederation, dies.

2021 Noted American military leader and politician, 65th Secretary of State Colin Powell passed away. On the same day, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court sentenced all five convicts, including Sirsa's Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim, to life imprisonment in the Ranjeet murder case. Other convicts associated with Ram Rahim include Krishna, Avtaar, Jasbir and Sabadil. The court has imposed a fine of Rs 31 lakh on Ram Rahim and Rs 50 thousand each on the other four. On July 10, 2002, Ranjit Singh of Khanpur Kolian village of Kurukshetra, who was a member of the management committee of the camp, was murdered. The Dera management suspected that Ranjit had got his sister to write the anonymous letter of sexual exploitation of Sadhvi. Dissatisfied with the police investigation, Ranjit's father had filed a petition in the High Court in January 2003 demanding a CBI investigation. The case was handed over to the CBI on 10 November 2003. CBI had filed the charge sheet in the year 2007.
