1456 जोन ऑफ आर्क को मरणोपरांत रेट्रियल में विधर्मी घोषित किया गया। 30 मई 1431 को अंग्रेजों से फ्रांस की रक्षा करने वाली वीरांगना जोन ऑफ आर्क को धर्मविरोधी होने का आरोप लगाकर मौत की सजा दे दी गई। उसके साथ घोर अन्याय, अपमान किया गया और जिंदा जलाकर अधजला शव सीन नदी में फेंक दिया गया। इससे फ्रांस में व्यापक विद्रोह फैला और बाद में जोन ऑफ आर्क पर लगाए गये आरोपों का पुनर्परीक्षण किया गया कि उस पर लगाए गये सभी आरोप मिथ्या और राजनीति से प्रेरित थे। जोन ऑफ आर्क को बाद में महान संत, नारी सशक्तिकरण की प्रतीक और बहुत से सम्मान प्रदान किये गये।

1656 सिखों के आठवें गुरु हर किशन सिंह का जन्म करतारपुर साहिब में हुआ।

1763 ब्रिटिश इंडिया कंपनी राज के दौरान मीर सैयद जाफर अली खान बहादुर दोबारा बंगाल के नवाब बने।

1770 लार्गा की लड़ाई ओटोमन साम्राज्य और रूसी साम्राज्य के मध्य नदी के तट पर हुई इसमें रूसी सेना की निर्णायक जीत हुई।

1799 सिख शासक रणजीत सिंह ने लाहौर पर कब्जा किया।

1854 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय स्वतंत्रता सेनानी मोहम्मद बरकतउल्ला भोपाली का जन्म इतवारा मोहल्ला भोपाल में हुआ।

1878 प्रसिद्ध सिख नेता, सिख समाज सुधारक और क्रांतिकारी रणधीर सिंह का जन्म नारंगवाला, लुधियाना में हुआ।

1883 प्रसिद्ध साहित्यकार चन्द्रधर शर्मा गुलेरी का जन्म जयपुर में हुआ।

1896 बंबई के वॉटसन होटल में 6 फिल्में दिखाई गईं। टिकट की कीमत एक रुपए थी। इस पर एक अखबार ने यह घटना सदी का चमत्कार बताई। यह प्रकरण भारतीय सिनेमा का जन्म माना गया। यह फिल्में दिखाने वाले थे ऑगस्टे लूमियर और उनके भाई लुई लूमियर। 14 जुलाई को उन्होंने बॉम्बे के नॉवेल्टी थिएटर में फिल्मों की दूसरी स्क्रीनिंग रखी, जिसमें कुल 24 फिल्में दिखाई गईं। अगले वर्ष एक फोटोग्राफर हीरालाल सेन ने कलकत्ता के स्टार थिएटर में एक शो के अलग-अलग फोटो खींचकर एक फिल्म बनाई जिसे फ्लॉवर ऑफ पर्शिया नाम दिया गया था। 1899 में एच.एस. भाटवडेकर ने बंबई के एक कुश्ती मुकाबले को शूट कर फिल्म बनाई। इसके बाद अलग-अलग लोग फिल्म कला में हाथ आजमाने लगे। 18 मई 1912 को दादा साहब तोरने ने श्री पुंडलीक नाम से फिल्म रिलीज की। इस वक्त तक किसी भारतीय ने फुल लेंथ फीचर फिल्म नहीं बनाई थी, लेकिन 1910 से दादा साहेब फाल्के इस काम में पूरी तरह लग चुके थे। उन्होंने द लाइफ ऑफ क्राइस्ट फिल्म देखकर फैसला लिया कि वो भी भारतीय पौराणिक कथाओं पर फिल्म बनाएंगे। दादा साहेब लंदन गए और वहां से फिल्म बनाने के लिए जरूरी तकनीक सीखीं और सामान लेकर आए। अनेक मुश्किलों से गुजरकर आखिर करीब 7 महीने बाद दादा साहेब की फिल्म बनकर तैयार हुई और इसे राजा हरिश्चंद्र नाम दिया गया। 3 मई 1913 के दिन इस फिल्म को रिलीज किया गया। भारतीय सिनेमा इतिहास की ये पहली फीचर फिल्म थी। वैसे 28 दिसंबर 1895 को लूमियर ब्रदर्स ने ही पहली बार पेरिस के ग्रांड कैफे में बड़े पर्दे पर मूवी स्क्रीनिंग की थी। इस 50 सेकंड की फिल्म में लूमियर ने फैक्ट्री में काम करने वाले श्रमिकों को दिखाया था।

1900 दक्षिण भारत के प्रमुख राजनीतिज्ञ काला वेंकटराव का जन्म हुआ।

1911 चार देशों ब्रिटेन, रूस, जापान और संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका ने खुले जल सील शिकार पर प्रतिबंध लगाने के लिए एक संधि पर हस्ताक्षर किए। इस संधि को 1911 के उत्तर प्रशांत फर सील कन्वेंशन के रूप में जाना जाता। यह दुनिया की पहली संधि थी जिसका उद्देश्य पर्यावरण और जीव संरक्षण करना था।

1914 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय फिल्म संगीतकार अनिल बिस्वास यानी अनिल कृष्ण विश्वास का जन्म बारीशाल, बंग्लादेश में हुआ।

1917 संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका में लायंस क्लब इंटरनेशनल की स्थापना की गयी

1928 अमेरिका के ओहायो में एक बेकरी ने स्लाइस्ड ब्रेड बेचने की शुरुआत की। लोगों को ये आइडिया इतना पसंद आया कि दूर-दूर से लोग इस बेकरी पर ब्रेड खरीदने आने लगे। उससे पहले ब्रेड स्लाइस्ड रूप में उपलब्ध नहीं थी। पूरी ब्रेड खरीदनी और खुद काटकर खानी पड़ती थी। अमेरिकन इंजीनियर ओटो फ्रेडरिक रोहवेडर ने एक मशीन बनाई थी जिसके जरिए ब्रेड को स्लाइस में आसानी से काटा जा सकता था। 1912 से ही ओटो एक ऐसी मशीन बनाने की कोशिश कर रहे थे जो ब्रेड को आसानी से काट सके। 1924 तक ओटो इस तरह की एक मशीन बनाने में कामयाब हो गए थे, लेकिन स्लाइस्ड ब्रेड जल्दी खराब हो रहे थे। ओटो ने इस परेशानी से निपटने के लिए इसी मशीन में ऑटोमैटिक पैकिंग की सुविधा भी जोड़ी। 1927 में वो इस तरह की मशीन बनाने में कामयाब हुए और अब ब्रेड मशीन से पैक होकर ही बाहर आने लगे। 1928 में मिसूरी की एक बेकरी को उन्होंने अपनी पहली मशीन बेची। अन्य बेकरी मालिकों ने भी ओटो से यह मशीन खरीदनी चालू की। दूसरे विश्वयुद्ध की वजह से ओटो कंगाल हो गए और उन्हें अपनी फैक्ट्री बेचनी पड़ी। इसके लिए उन्होंने अपने ज्वैलरी स्टोर को बेच दिया था और एक सिक्योरिटी गार्ड का काम करने लगे, लेकिन 1917 में उनकी फैक्ट्री में आग लगने से उनके मशीन का ब्लूप्रिंट और प्रोटोटाइप दोनों जलकर खाक हो गए। ओटो को सारा काम फिर से शुरू करना पड़ा।

1934 विख्यात हिंदी कवि, ज्ञानपीठ पुरस्कार प्राप्त करने वाले केदारनाथ सिंह का जन्म चकिया (चंदौली, वाराणसी मंडल) में हुआ।

1937 जापान की सेना ने बीजिंग पर कब्जा कर लिया। लुगुओ पुल की लड़ाई के दौरान चीनी सेना जापानी सेना से पराजित हुई।

1941 तानाशाह एडोल्फ हिटलर शासित जर्मनी के नाजी हत्यारे दस्तों ने यूरोपीय देश लिथुआनिया में पांच हजार से अधिक यहूदियों को मार डाला।

1948 स्वतंत्र भारत की पहली बहुउद्देशीय परियोजना हुई और इसी दिन 1948 में दामोदर घाटी निगम की स्थापना हुई।

1949 एनडीटीवी की सह संस्थापक और पत्रकार राधिका राय का जन्म कलकत्ता में हुआ। इसी दिन बाॅलीवुड सिनेमा के जाने माने अभिनेता, पटकथा लेखक, निर्देशक और फिल्म निर्माता अकबर खान का जन्म बंगलौर में हुआ।

1953 उड़ीसा उच्च न्यायालय के मुख्य न्यायाधीश और सर्वोच्च न्यायालय में न्यायाधीश रहे आदर्श कुमार गोयल का जन्म हिसार हरियाणा में हुआ।

1955 भारत में सर्वप्रथम वन्य प्राणी दिवस मनाया गया।

1959 प्रसिद्ध निबंधकार अशोक कुमार सिंह का जन्म हुआ।

1963 रंग दे बसंती और भाग मिल्खा भाग जैसी तमाम फिल्मों के लेखक, निर्देशक, अभिनेता राकेश ओमप्रकाश मेहरा का जन्म दिल्ली में हुआ।

1965 इजराइल के द्वितीय प्रधानमन्त्री मोशे शॅरेड का निधन हुआ।

1966 उड़ीसा की जानी मानी अधिवक्ता और उड़ीसा की प्रथम एवरेस्ट फतेह करने वाली महिला कल्पना दाश का जन्म हुआ। 23 मई 2019 को माउंट एवरेस्ट पर इनकी मौत हो गई।

1978 सोलोमन द्वीप को ब्रिटेन से स्वतंत्रता मिली। यूरोपियों ने इस द्वीप समूह की खोज 1567 में की थी।

1979 सोवियत संघ ने पूर्वी कजाख क्षेत्र में परमाणु परीक्षण किया।

1980 ईरान में शरिया कानून लागू हुआ।

1981 रांची में प्रसिद्ध भारतीय क्रिकेटर महेन्द्र सिंह धोनी का जन्म हुआ।

1982 ब्रिटेन की महारानी एलिजाबेथ के आवास बकिंघम पैलेस के उनके बेडरूम में एक आदमी घुस आया।

1983 सोवियत राष्ट्राध्यक्ष यूरी आंद्रोपोव को एक पत्र लिखने के अमेरिकी छात्रा सामंथा स्मिथ सोवियत संघ द्वारा मेहमान के रूप में आमंत्रित किया गया जिसे अमेरिका का यंगेस्ट एंबेसडर कहा गया।

1985 बोरिस बेकर सबसे कम उम्र के विंबलडन विजेता बने। उन्होंने 17 साल की उम्र में विंबलडन चैंपियनशिप जीती। वह एक जर्मन टेनिस खिलाड़ी थे और कई टेनिस चैंपियनशिप जीत चुके थे। उन्हें अपने समय के दौरान दुनिया में नंबर 1 के रूप में भी स्थान मिला।

1986 जानी मानी बाॅलीवुड अभिनेत्री और गायिका, माॅडल और भारतीय शास्त्रीय संगीतज्ञ श्वेता पंडित का जन्म हुआ। यह प्रख्यात शास्त्रीय गायक पं. जसराज की नातिन हैं।

1988 जाने माने भारतीय फुटबाल खिलाड़ी आदिल खान का जन्म वरना, गोवा में हुआ।

1990 मिजोरम के प्रमुख राजनेता और मुख्यमंत्री रहे लालडेंगा का निधन हुआ।

1992 बोलान्ट इंडस्ट्रीज के संस्थापक, कारोबारी और अमेरिका के मैसाचुसेट्स इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ टेक्नोलॉजी में प्रबंधन विज्ञान में पहले अंतरराष्ट्रीय दृष्टिबाधित छात्र श्रीकांत बोला का जन्म मछलीपटनम में हुआ।

1998 प्रख्यात भारतीय शास्त्रीय संगीतज्ञ, गायक पं. विश्वमोहन भट्ट को अमेरिका का प्रतिष्ठित दशाब्दी का सर्वाधिक प्रशंसित व्यक्ति सम्मान मिला।

1999 फ्रांस के वैज्ञानिकों ने पेचिस के टीके की खोज की।

2003 यूनाइटेड कम्यूनिस्ट पार्टी ऑफ अर्मेनिया का गठन हुआ था। इसी दिन अमेरिकी अंतरिक्ष एजेंसी नासा के ऑपर्च्युनिटी अंतरिक्ष यान ने मंगल ग्रह के लिए उड़ान भरी।

2007 अमेरिका के दूरसंचार उपग्रह डायरेक्ट वी-10 को रूस के प्रोटान-एम रॉकेट द्वारा प्रक्षेपित किया गया। इसी दिन न्यू 7 वंडर्स फाउंडेशन ने दुनिया के 7 अजूबों की घोषणा की। भारत के ताजमहल को भी इस लिस्ट में शामिल किया गया।

2008 काबुल (अफगानिस्तान) में भारतीय दूतावास पर हुए हमले में 41 लोग मारे गये।

2009 विश्व चॉकलेट दिवस दिवस मनाने की शुरुआत हुई।

2011 हैरी पॉटर सीरीज की अंतिम फिल्म हैरी पॉटर एंड द डेथली हैलोज पार्ट 2 का लंदन में प्रीमियर हुआ। इसी दिन उर्दू के प्रसिद्ध लेखक व शायर अब्दुल कावी देसनावी का निधन हुआ।

2012 रूस में भयंकर बाढ़ आने से 140 लोग मरे।

2013 विंबलडन टेनिस टूर्नामेंट के फाइनल में नोवाक जोकोविच को हराकर एंडी मरे 1936 के बाद से इस खिताब पर कब्जा जमाने वाले इंग्लैंड के पहले खिलाड़ी बने। इसी दिन बिहार के बोध गया में महाबोधी मंदिर परिसर में सिलसिलेवार 10 धमाके हुए।

2014 रूसी साहित्य को हिंदी में उपलब्ध कराने में अग्रणी भूमिका निभाने वाले मदन लाल मधु का निधन हुआ।

2019 अमेरिका ने लगातार दूसरी बार वुमन्स फुटबॉल वर्ल्ड कप नीदरलैंड को हराकर जीता।

2020 अमेरिका ने विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठन से आधिकारिक तौर पर अलग होने का फैसला किया।

1456 Joan of Arc is posthumously declared a heretic at the retrial. On May 30, 1431, the heroine Joan of Arc, who defended France from the British, was sentenced to death for being an anti-religionist. He was subjected to severe injustice, insulted and burnt alive and his half-burnt body was thrown into the Seine river. This led to widespread insurrection in France and a subsequent re-examination of the accusations against Joan of Arc that all the charges against her were false and politically motivated. Joan of Arc was later honored as a great saint, a symbol of women's empowerment, and many more.

1656 Har Kishan Singh, the eighth Guru of the Sikhs, was born at Kartarpur Sahib.

1763 Mir Syed Jafar Ali Khan Bahadur became the Nawab of Bengal again during the British India Company rule.

1770 The Battle of Larga took place on the banks of the river between the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire, in which the Russian army won a decisive victory.

1799 Sikh ruler Ranjit Singh captures Lahore.

1854 Mohammad Barkatullah Bhopali, famous Indian freedom fighter, was born in Itwara Mohalla, Bhopal.

1878 Randhir Singh, famous Sikh leader, Sikh social reformer and revolutionary, was born in Narangwala, Ludhiana.

1883 Famous litterateur Chandradhar Sharma Guleri was born in Jaipur.

1896 6 films were shown at the Watson Hotel in Bombay. The cost of the ticket was one rupee. On this, a newspaper described this incident as the miracle of the century. This episode is considered to be the birth of Indian cinema. These films were shown by Auguste Lumiere and his brother Louis Lumiere. On 14 July he held a second screening of films at the Novelty Theater in Bombay, showing a total of 24 films. The following year, Hiralal Sen, a photographer, made a film called Flower of Persia by taking different photographs of a show at the Star Theater in Calcutta. In 1899 H.S. Bhatwadekar shot a wrestling match in Bombay and made the film. After this, different people started trying their hands in film art. On 18 May 1912, Dadasaheb Torne released a film titled Shree Pundalik. Till this time no Indian had made a full length feature film, but from 1910 Dadasaheb Phalke was fully engaged in this work. After seeing the film The Life of Christ, he decided that he would also make a film on Indian mythology. Dada Saheb went to London and from there he learned the necessary techniques for film making and brought the materials. After going through many difficulties, finally after about 7 months, Dada Saheb's film was completed and it was named Raja Harishchandra. The film was released on 3 May 1913. It was the first feature film in Indian cinema history. By the way, on December 28, 1895, the Lumiere Brothers screened a movie on the big screen for the first time at the Grand Café in Paris. In this 50-second film, Lumiere showed the workers working in the factory.

1900 Kala Venkatrao, prominent politician of South India, was born.

1911 Four countries Britain, Russia, Japan and the United States sign a treaty banning open water seal hunting. This treaty became known as the North Pacific Fur Seal Convention of 1911. It was the first treaty in the world whose purpose was to protect the environment and life.

1914 Anil Biswas aka Anil Krishna Biswas, famous Indian film composer, was born in Barishal, Bangladesh.

1917 Lions Clubs International was founded in the United States

1928 A bakery in Ohio, USA, begins selling sliced bread. People liked this idea so much that people from far and wide started coming to this bakery to buy bread. Before that bread was not available in sliced form. Had to buy whole bread and cut it myself. American engineer Otto Friedrich Rohwedder made a machine through which bread could be easily cut into slices. Since 1912, Otto had been trying to create a machine that could easily slice bread. By 1924, Otto had managed to build such a machine, but the sliced breads were spoiling quickly. To overcome this problem, Otto also added automatic packing facility to this machine. In 1927, he succeeded in making this type of machine and now the bread started coming out after being packed from the machine. In 1928, he sold his first machine to a bakery in Missouri. Other bakery owners also started buying this machine from Otto. The Second World War left Otto penniless and he had to sell his factory. For this, he sold his jewelry store and worked as a security guard, but in 1917 a fire at his factory destroyed both the blueprint and the prototype of his machine. Otto had to start all over again.

1934 Renowned Hindi poet, Jnanpith awardee Kedarnath Singh was born in Chakia (Chandauli, Varanasi Division).

1937 Japanese army occupies Beijing. The Chinese army was defeated by the Japanese army during the Battle of Luguo Bridge.

1941 Nazi killing squads in Germany under dictator Adolf Hitler kill more than five thousand Jews in the European country of Lithuania.

1948 The first multipurpose project of independent India took place and Damodar Valley Corporation was established on this day in 1948.

1949 Radhika Rai, co-founder of NDTV and journalist, was born in Calcutta. On this day the famous actor, screenwriter, director and film producer of Bollywood cinema Akbar Khan was born.

1953 Adarsh Kumar Goel, chief justice of the Orissa High Court and a judge in the Supreme Court, was born in Hisar, Haryana.

1955 Wild Animal Day was celebrated for the first time in India.

1959 Ashok Kumar Singh, famous essayist, was born.

1963 Rakesh Omprakash Mehra, writer, director, actor of many films like Rang De Basanti and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, was born in Delhi.

1965 Moshe Shared, the second Prime Minister of Israel, passed away.

1966 Kalpana Dash, well-known advocate of Orissa and first woman to conquer Everest from Orissa, was born. He died on Mount Everest on 23 May 2019.

1978 Solomon Islands gained independence from Britain. Europeans discovered this island group in 1567.

1979 The Soviet Union conducted a nuclear test in the eastern Kazakh region.

Sharia law came into force in Iran in 1980.

1981 in Ranchi, famous Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni was born.

1982 A man breaks into her bedroom at Buckingham Palace, the residence of Britain's Queen Elizabeth.

1983 Samantha Smith, an American student invited by the Soviet Union as a guest to write a letter to Soviet President Yuri Andropov, was named America's Youngest Ambassador.

1985 Boris Becker becomes the youngest ever Wimbledon winner. He won the Wimbledon Championships at the age of 17. He was a German tennis player and won several tennis championships. He was also ranked as No. 1 in the world during his time there.

1986 Shweta Pandit, noted Bollywood actress and singer, model and Indian classical musician, was born. She is the granddaughter of renowned classical singer Pt. Jasraj.

1988: Adil Khan, famous Indian football player, was born in Verna, Goa.

1990 Laldenga, prominent politician and Chief Minister of Mizoram, passed away.

1992 Srikanth Bola, founder of Bollant Industries, businessman and first international blind student in management science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, was born in Machilipatnam.

1998 Renowned Indian classical musician, singer Pt. Vishwamohan Bhatt receives America's prestigious Most Admired Person of the Decade Award.

1999 French scientists discover vaccine for dysentery.

2003 The United Communist Party of Armenia was formed. On the same day, the Opportunity spacecraft of the American space agency NASA flew to Mars.

2007 America's telecommunications satellite DirecTV-10 is launched by Russia's Proton-M rocket. On this day the New 7 Wonders Foundation announced the 7 Wonders of the World. India's Taj Mahal was also included in this list.

In 2008, 41 people were killed in the attack on the Indian Embassy in Kabul (Afghanistan).
