1959 तिब्बती बौद्ध धर्मगुरु दलाई लामा को तिब्बत से निर्वासन के बाद भारत में शरण दी गई।

1961 दक्षिण अफ्रीका संघ दक्षिण अफ्रीका गणराज्य बना। यह चार अलग ब्रिटिश उपनिवेशों के एकीकरण के साथ अस्तित्व में आया, केप कॉलोनी, नेटाल कॉलोनी, ट्रांसवाल कॉलोनी और ऑरेंज रिवर कॉलोनी।

1966 दक्षिणी वियतनाम के शासन के विरोध में ह्यू शहर में वियतनाम की बौद्ध युवती ने खुद को आग लगाकर जान दे दी। आग की लपटों से घिरी युवती की तस्वीर ने दुनियाभर में तहलका मचा दिया।

1970 भारतीय प्रधानमंत्री इंदिरा गांधी ने बांग्लादेश जो तब पूर्वी पाकिस्तान था, में चल रहे गृह युद्ध में सहयोग हेतु अंतर्राष्ट्रीय मदद का आह्वान किया था। पाकिस्तान ने दो मिलियन लोगों को शरणार्थियों में बदल दिया था। उनमें से अनेक हैजा और चेचक से पीड़ित थे। पश्चिम पाकिस्तान के अधिकारियों ने उनकी देखभाल करने से इनकार कर दिया था और भारत से यह देखा नहीं गया। बाद में इंदिरा गांधी ने पूर्वी पाकिस्तान के लोगों को सहयोग देकर पाकिस्तान से अलग करवा दिया और बांग्लादेश अस्तित्व में आया।

1981 पुलिस-सरकार समर्थित एक संगठित भीड़ ने श्रीलंका के जाफना में सार्वजनिक पुस्तकालय को जला डला जिसमें 20वीं शताब्दी के बेथलॉनिकलस्म के 97,000 से अधिक वस्तुएं और दस्तावेज नष्ट हुए।

1985 फुटबॉल एसोसिएशन ने इंग्लिश क्लबों के यूरोप में खेलने पर प्रतिबंध लगा दिया।

1987 लघु कथा लेखक, मलयाली भारतीय फिल्म निर्माता-निर्देशक और पटकथा लेखक जॉन अब्राहम का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन गोवा के भारत का 25 वां राज्य बनने के बाद दमन और दीव केंद्र शासित प्रदेश के रूप में अस्तित्व में आए। 450 वर्षों से गोवा, दादरा और नागर हवेली अरब सागर के तट पर दमन और दीव के तटीय विस्तार पुर्तगाली भारत का हिस्सा थे। गोवा, दमन और दीव को सैन्य विजय द्वारा भारत गणराज्य में शामिल किया गया।

1988 संयुक्त राष्ट्र में मई के आखिरी दिन विश्व तंबाकू निषेध दिवस मनाने एक प्रस्ताव 1987 में पास हुआ। 1988 में यह दिवस अप्रैल में मनाया गया जिसके अगले वर्ष से हर साल 31 मई को तंबाकू के सेवन को रोकने और इससे होने वाली समस्या से जागरूक करने के लिए विश्व तंबाकू निषेध दिवस मनाया जाने लगा। इसी दिन समाज सुधारक और लेखक संतराम बी. ए. का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन प्रसिद्ध राजनेता, स्वतंत्रता सेनानी, पत्रकार, साहित्यकार तथा मध्य प्रदेश के मुख्यमंत्री रहे द्वारका प्रसाद मिश्रा का निधन हुआ।

2005 अमेरिकी वैनिटी फेयर के एक लेख में बताया गया कि सरकारी वाटरगेट कांड के बारे में जानकारी गुप्तचर, एफबीआई के पूर्व एसोसिएट डायरेक्टर मार्क फेल्ट ने दी थी। तब जानकारी देने वाले का पता नहीं था और उसे डीप थ्रोट कहा गया। 1970 के दशक में वाटरगेट कांड बहुत कुख्यात हुआ और राष्ट्रपति रिचर्ड निक्सन की बहुत बदनामी हुई। उन्हें पद त्यागना पड़ा था।

2006 अमेरिकी वायुसेना के पूर्व जनरल मिशेल हैडेन को अमेरिकी खुफिया एजेंसी (सीआईए) का निदेशक नियुक्त किया गया। इसी दिन अंतर्राष्ट्रीय परमाणु ऊर्जा एजेंसी के प्रमुख मोहम्मद अलबरदेई ने स्पष्ट किया कि ईरान के परमाणु कार्यक्रम से दुनिया को कोई खतरा नहीं।

2007 सैप ब्लाटर तीसरी बार अंतर्राष्ट्रीय फुटबाल संघ के अध्यक्ष बने।

2008 विश्व के सबसे तेज धावक उसैन बोल्ट ने 100 मीटर दौड़ 9.72 सेकंड में पूरी कर विश्व रिकाॅर्ड बनाया। इसी दिन भारत की सरकारी तेल कंपनियों ने जहाजों के ईधन (एटीफ) की कीमत में 18.5्रतिशत की बढ़ोत्तरी की। इसी दिन औपचारिक दस्तावेजों के अभाव में पाकिस्तान के पूर्व मंत्री अंसार बर्नी नई दिल्ली हवाई अड्डे से पाकिस्तान वापस लौटाए गये।

2009 अंग्रेजी और मलयालम की प्रसिद्ध लेखिका कमला दास का निधन हुआ।

2010 भारत में मान्यता प्राप्त हर प्राइवेट स्कूल में गरीब बच्चों के लिए 25 फीसदी सीटें आरक्षित करने का कानून यानी शिक्षा का अधिकार कानून - आरटीई - राइट टू एजूकेशन बनाया गया। इसी दिन भारतीय रिजर्व बैंक के दिशा-निर्देशों के अनुसार 1 अप्रैल से बैंक में बचत खाता धारकों के ब्याज की गणना दैनिक आधार पर होगी। अब तक ब्याज की गणना बचत बैंक खाते में महीने की दस तारीख से लेकर अंतिम तारीख तक उपलब्ध न्यूनतम राशि के आधार पर की जाती थी।
