1571 मिग्यूल लोपेज डी जगाज्पी ने फिलीपींस की राजधानी मनीला की स्थापना की।

1743 फ्रांस के भौतिक वैज्ञानिक ज्यां पियरे क्रिस्टीन ने सेंटीग्रेड तापमान पैमाना (स्केल) का विकास किया।

1824 महाराष्ट्र के प्रमुखतम शासक नाना साहब पेशवा द्वितीय का जन्म हुआ। इनका वास्तविक नाम धोंडू पंत था।  

1881 आधुनिक तुर्की के निर्माता कहे जाने वाले नेता कमाल अतातुर्क का जन्म हुआ।

1885 जर्मन चांसलर बिस्फार्क ने अफ्रीकी देश कैमरून और टोंगोलैंड पर कब्जा किया।

1892 प्रख्यात ब्रितानी अंग्रेजी नाटककार एवं कवि ऑस्कर वाइल्ड दो साल सजा काट कर जेल से रिहा हुए। उन्हें समलैंगिकता के अपराध में जेल में रखा गया। तब ब्रिटेन में समलैंगिकता गैरकानूनी थी।

1900 दुनिया के सबसे बड़े रेल मार्ग सिंपलन सुरंग को खोला गया, इससे इटली-स्विट्जरलैंड जुड़े।

1904 टाटा समूह के संस्थापक जमशेद जी टाटा का निधन हुआ।

1908 बीसवीं सदी के प्रमुखतम बांग्ला लेखकों में से एक मानिक बंधोपाध्याय का जन्म दुम्का, बिहार में हुआ।

1910 राष्ट्रीय स्वयं सेवक संघ के विचारक, हिंदुत्ववादियों के आदर्श विनायक दामोदर सावरकर का शिष्य नाथूराम गोडसे बारामती, महाराष्ट्र में पैदा हुआ। उसने 30 जनवरी 1948 को महात्मा गांधी की हत्या की।

1913 नीलम संजीव रेड्डी का जन्म हुआ। वे भारत के छठे राष्ट्रपति बने। राष्ट्रपति बनने से पहले वे उप राष्ट्रप फुटबॉल क्लब रोसेनबोर्ग बीके की स्थापना की गई थी.

1917 नार्वे का फुटबॉल क्लब रोसेनबोर्ग बीके की स्थापित हुआ।

1926 बर्बर जर्मन तानाशाह एडोल्फ हिटलर के दोस्त इटली के बर्बर तानाशाह बेनिटो मुसोलिनी ने इटली को फासीवादी राष्ट्र घोषित किया। यह घोषित तौर पर दुनिया का पहला तानाशाही देश हुआ।

1930 गोरी महिलाओं को दक्षिण अफ्रीका में वोट देने का अधिकार प्राप्त हुआ।

1934 अंग्रेजी भाषा के प्रसिद्ध भारतीय लेखक रस्किन बॉंड का जन्म हुआ।

1936 ब्रिटेन के आविष्कारक रॉबर्ट डेटसन वाट ने रडार बनाया। यह प्रणाली सबसे पहले ब्रिटेन के हवाई अड्डे पर स्थापित की गई। विमानों की उड़ान के दौरान रडार से निगरानी की जाती है।

1938 प्रख्यात भारतीय कवि, रंगमंच कर्मी, कथाकार, नाटककार, फिल्म निर्देशक और फिल्म अभिनेता गिरीश कर्नाड का जन्म हुआ।

1939 विंस्टन चर्चिल ने ब्रिटिश और सोवियत नाजी विरोधी समझौते पर हस्ताक्षर किए। इससे दोनों देशों ने द्वितीय विश्व युद्ध के एक हिस्से के रूप में जर्मनी के खिलाफ एक गठबंधन बनाया।

1950 मिस्र ने स्वेज नहर को इजरायली जहाजों के लिए बंद करने की घोषणा की।

1961 असम के सिलचर रेलवे स्टेशन पर 11 बंगाली लोग मारे गए जब बंगाली भाषा आंदोलन प्रदर्शनकारियों पर पुलिस बल ने गोलीबारी की।

1962 अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति जॉन एफ के जन्मदिन समारोह के टेलीविजन प्रसारण के दौरान न्यूयॉर्क सिटी के मैडिसन स्क्वायर गार्डन में विश्व चर्चित अत्यंत सुंदर तथा सैक्सी मानी गई अभिनेत्री और मॉडल मर्लिन मुनरो ने हैप्पी बर्थडे टू यू प्रदर्शन किया। इस कार्यक्रम को नैतिक दृष्टि से शर्मनाक कहा गया और इसकी व्यापक निंदा हुई। मर्लिन और कैनेडी के संबंधों की दुनिया भर में चर्चा होती थी।

1971 भारतीय नौसेना का पहला पनडुब्बी अड्डा वीर बाहू विशाखापत्तनम में शुरू हुआ। इसी दिन 1971 में सोवियत संघ ने अपने अंतरिक्ष कार्यक्रम मार्स-2 कार्यक्रम की शुरूआत की।

1974 जाने माने फिल्म अभिनेता नवाजुद्दीन सिद्दीकी का जन्म हुआ।

1976 ऑस्ट्रेलिया सरकार ने सोने के स्वामित्व को कानूनी मान्यता दी। इससे पहले केवल सरकार और बैंकों को ही सोना रखने का अधिकार था।

1979 शीर्षस्थ हिंदी कवि, साहित्यकार हजारी प्रसाद द्विवेदी का निधन हुआ।

1980 अमेरिका में हेलेना ज्वालामुखी फटने से नौ लोगों की मौत। देश के उत्तर पश्चिमी भाग में सुबह सवेरे हुई इस घटना के बाद अंधेरा छा गया। काफी लोग लापता भी हुए।

1988 फिल्म मस्तराम से हिंदी फिल्म जगत में अभिनय की शुरुआत करने वाली बाद में दक्षिण भारतीय फिल्मों एवं माॅडलिंग में नाम कमाने वाली तारा अलीशा बेरी का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1992 दक्षिण भारतीय फिल्मों की खासतौर पर तमिल और मलयालम भाषाओं की प्रमुख अभिनेत्री और गायिका मैडोना सेबास्टियन का जन्म हुआ।

1995 जानी मानी फिल्म और टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री तथा माॅडल रिया दीपसी का जन्म हुआ। इन्होंने टेलीविजन धारावाहिक महाभारत एवं फिल्म भागते रहो आदि में अपने अभिनय से पहचान बनाई।

1996 तमिल और मलयालम सिनेमा की लोकप्रिय अभिनेत्री लक्ष्मी मेनन का जन्म कोच्चि, केरल में हुआ। इसी दिन 1996 में प्रसिद्ध तमिल अभिनेत्री तथा तमिलनाडु की मुख्यमंत्री रहीं जानकी रामचन्द्रन का निधन हुआ। वे तमिलनाडु के मुख्यमंत्री एमजी रामचंद्रन की पत्नी भी रहीं।

1997 प्रख्यात बांगला फिल्म एवं रंगमंच अभिनेता, निर्देशक और नाटककार सोंभु मित्रा का निधन हुआ।

1999 भारतीय मूल के महेंद्र चौधरी फिजी के प्रधानमंत्री बने। 1999 में इसी दिन मैक्सिको में बाल्कान डिफ्यूजो ज्वालामुखी सक्रिय हुआ।

2007 अमेरिकी सीनेट में समग्र आव्रजन सुधार विधेयक पर सहमति बनी।

2008 भारत एवं चीन के बीच नाथुला से व्यापार पुनः शुरू हुआ, इसी दिन बहुचर्चित, बहुप्रतिष्ठित नाटककार और रंगमंचकर्मी विजय तेंदुलकर का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन विश्व श्रम संगठन यानी इंटरनेशनल लेबर आॅर्गनाइजेशन आईएलओ के कार्यकारी अक्ष्यक्ष असाने ने नई दिल्ली में सामाजिक सुरक्षा पर सम्मेलन का उदघाटन किया। इसी दिन भारत की प्रमुख सार्वजनिक बैंक आफ बड़ौंदा ने वर्ष 2007-08 में अपने शुद्ध लाभ में 39.9 प्रतिशत की वृद्धि दर्ज की। मलेशिया के पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री महाथिर मुहम्मद ने सत्ताधारी पार्टी से स्वयं को अलग किया। कैलाश मानसरोवर के लिए चीन ने भारतीय यात्रियों का दौरा स्थगित किया।

2010 विश्व परिवार चिकित्सक संगठन द्वारा 19 मई को विश्व पारिवारिक चिकित्सक दिवस मनाया गया। तब से दुनिया भर में यह दिवस मनाया जाने लगा। केंद्र सरकार को 3जी स्पेक्ट्रम की नीलामी से 67718.95 करोड़ रुपए का शुल्क मिलना निश्चित हुआ। बिहार के मुजफ्फरपुर-रक्सौल रेलखंड पर मोतीहारी जिला के जीवधारा और पीपरा रेलवे स्टेशन के बीच बंगारी हॉल्ट के समीप नक्सलियों ने रेल पटरी उड़ा दी, जिससे एक टैंकर मालगाड़ी दुर्घटनाग्रस्त हो गई। इसी दिन दुनिया की पहली एटीएम यानी ऑटोमैटिक टेलर मशीन के स्काटिश आविष्कारक जॉन शेफर्ड बैरोन का निधन हुआ।

2011 58वें राष्ट्रीय फिल्म पुरस्कारों की घोषणा हुई। फिल्म मोनेर मानुस को राष्ट्रीय एकता के लिए पुरस्कृत किया गया है। फिल्म दबंग को सर्वाधिक मनोरंजक फिल्म का पुरस्कार मिला। मलयालम फिल्म एदेमाइन्ते माकान अबू को सर्वश्रेठ फिल्म चुना गया, जबकि अरुणिमा शार्मा को सर्वश्रेष्ठ निर्देशक का पुरस्कार दिया गया है। मलयालम फिल्म एदेमाइन्ते माकान अबू के लिए मलयालम अभिनेता सलीम कुमार और तमिल अभिनेता धनुष संयुक्त रूप से सर्वश्रेष्ठ अभिनेता के राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार के लिए चुने गए। मिताली जगताप और सरन्ना पी को संयुक्त रूप से सर्वश्रेष्ठ अभिनेत्री के राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार के लिए चुना गया।

2018 कर्नाटक के मुख्यमंत्री येदियुरप्पा ने शपथ लेने के 2 दिन बाद ही इस्तीफा दिया।

2020 सरकारी तौर पर जानकारी दी गई कि भारत में कोरोना संक्रमण के कुल मामले 1,01,139 मृतक संख्या 3,163 से अधिक हुई।
