1817 अमेरिका की प्रमुख और विश्व प्रसिद्ध मिसिसिपी नदी पर स्टीमबोट सेवा की शुरू की गई।

1872 मेट्रोपॉलिटन गैस कंपनी का लैंप पहली बार जलाया गया।

1857 विख्यात भारतीय राजनीतिज्ञ एवं भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के अध्यक्ष रहे आर.एन.माधोलकर का जन्म हुआ।

1881 जर्मनी में बर्लिन के पास लिस्टरफेलडर में बिजली से चलने वाली पहली ट्राम रेल सेवा की शुरुआत हुई।

1908 मंगलौर में कृष्णा राय का जन्म हुआ। यह हिंदू गुरु मुक्तानंद परमहंस कहलाए। इन्होंने मुख्यतः वेदांत, कुंडलिनी एवं कश्मीरी शिववाद पर काम किया।

1911 कलकत्ता में बने तल्लाह वाटर टैंक का निर्माण पूरा हुआ, इसे तब दुनिया का सबसे बड़ा ओवरहैड वाटर टैंक कहा गया था। कलकत्ता म्यूनिसिपल कारपोरेशन के इस ओवरहैड वाटर टैंक का उद्घाटन बंगाल के लेफ्टिनेंट गवर्नर एडवर्ड नोर्मन बेकर ने किया। 

1920 प्रसिद्ध फ्रांसीसी स्वतंत्रता सेनानी, सेनापति जॉन ऑफ आर्क को संत की उपाधि दी गयी।

1926 किराना घराना और आगरा घराना की प्रसिद्ध शास्त्रीय गायिका मानिक वर्मा का जन्म हुआ।

1929 फिल्मी दुनिया के सबसे प्रतिष्ठित ऑस्कर अवॉर्ड की शुरुआत 16 मई को हुई थी। इसकी शुरुआत करने का उद्देश्य था कि फिल्म इंडस्ट्री के प्रतिभावान कलाकारों को सम्मान मिलना चाहिए। कैलिफोर्निया के रूजवेल्ट होटल में करीब 250 लोगों की उपस्थिति में इस समारोह का आयोजन हुआ। डायरेक्टर विलियम वेलमेन की फिल्म विंग्स ने बेस्ट फिल्म का अवॉर्ड जीता। इस समारोह में कुल 12 श्रेणियों में ऑस्कर अवॉर्ड दिए गए। शुरुआत में इस अवॉर्ड को एकेडमी अवॉर्ड ऑफ मेरिट के नाम से जाना जाता था। 1939 में इसे बदलकर ऑस्कर कर दिया गया। आज फिल्मी दुनिया में काम करने वाले हर कलाकार के लिए ऑस्कर जीतना एक सपने जैसा है।

1931 विद्वान, प्रमुख कांग्रेसी नेता व विदेश मंत्री रहे नटवर सिंह का जन्म हुआ।

1933 प्रसिद्ध साहित्यकार गुलशेर खाँ शानी का जन्म हुआ।

1943 पोलेंड के वॉरसॉ में यहूदी बस्तियों में चल रही लड़ाई खत्म हुई। पुलिस और कमांडो दल ने 19 अप्रैल को इन बस्तियों में प्रवेश किया था।

1945 उड़िया भाषा के प्रसिद्ध साहित्यकार एवं भाषाविद गोपाल चंद्र प्रहराज का निधन हुआ।

1948 प्रख्यात हिंदी पत्रकार, जनसत्ता में फीचर संपादक रहे प्रमुख हिंदी कवि मंगलेश डबराल का जन्म हुआ।

1949 गोवा के मुख्यमंत्री, लोकसभा सदस्य रहे और वर्तमान में गोवा विधान सभा सदस्य चर्चिल अलेमो का जन्म हुआ।

1960 भारत और ब्रिटेन के बीच अंतरराष्ट्रीय टेलेक्स सेवा की शुरुआत हुई।

1966 कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी ऑफ चाइना के अध्यक्ष माओत्से तुंग के नेतृत्व में सांस्कृतिक क्रांति की शुरुआत हुई। इस क्रांति ने आर्थिक, सामाजिक और राजनीतिक रूप से देश को पूरी तरह बदल डाला। किसान, मजदूर, गरीब, महिलाएं और बच्चे अधिकार संपन्न और सशक्त बने, नवनिर्माण हुआ और हर क्षेत्र में खुशहाली आई। दुनिया के जनवादी चीन की ओर देख रहे थे।

1973 सिखों के सर्वोच्च धार्मिक निकाय अकाल तख्त के 31वें जत्थेदार और बाद में सिख आतंकी संगठन बब्बर खालसा के प्रमुख नेता जगतार सिंह हवारा का जन्म फतेहगढ़ साहिब पंजाब में हुआ। यह पंजाब के 12वें मुख्यमंत्री बेअंत सिंह की हत्या में शामिल होने के जुर्म में तिहाड़ जेल में हैं।

1974 इस्राइल के लड़ाकू विमानों ने सात फिलिस्तीनी शरणार्थी शिविरों और दक्षिणी लेबनान के गांवों पर बम दागे। इन हमलों में 27 लोग मारे गए और 138 अन्य घायल हुए।

1975 सिक्किम को 22वें राज्य के रूप में भारतीय संघ में शामिल किया गया।

1981 हिंदी, तमिल, कन्नड़, भोजपुरी, मलयालम, तेलुगू आदि अनेक भाषाओं की फिल्मों तथा टेलीविजन शो की बोल्ड, खूबसूरत अभिनेत्री और माॅडल छाया सिंह का जन्म बंगलौर में हुआ।

1983 खूबसूरत, बोल्ड, जानी मानी पंजाबी एवं हिंदी टेलीविजन तथा फिल्म अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल कुलराज कौर रंधावा का जन्म देहरादून में हुआ।

1987 जानी मानी खूबसूरत, बोल्ड हिंदी और तेलुगू फिल्म अभिनेत्री, गायिका और माॅडल सोनल चौहान का जन्म नई दिल्ली में हुआ।

1988 चर्चित, अत्यंत व्यस्ततम, महंगे और अनेक पुरस्कार, सम्मान प्राप्त फिल्म अभिनेता विक्की कौशल का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1991 महारानी एलिजाबेथ द्वितीय अमेरिकी कांग्रेस को संबोधित करने वाली पहली ब्रिटिश साम्राज्ञी बनीं।

1996 भाजपा नेता अटल बिहारी वाजपेयी ने पहली बार प्रधानमंत्री पद की शपथ ग्रहण की। गठबंधन की यह बहुमत साबित नहीं कर पाई और 13 दिन में ही गिर गई। भारत के इतिहास में अब तक किसी भी प्रधानमंत्री का ये सबसे छोटा कार्यकाल है। फिर 1998 में मध्यावधि चुनाव हुए। एक बार फिर भाजपा सबसे बड़े दल और एनडीए सबसे बड़े गठबंधन के रूप में उभरा। अटल दोबारा प्रधानमंत्री बने। गठबंधन के आपसी मतभेदों के कारण उनका यह कार्यकाल भी लंबा नहीं रहा। महज 13 महीने बाद अटल सरकार को इस्तीफा देना पड़ा। केंद्र की सत्ता पर आज जो भाजपा की अगुवाई वाला गठबंधन राष्ट्रीय जनतांत्रिक गठबंधन या नेशनल डेमोक्रेटिक अलाएंस काबिज है वह अटल बिहारी वाजपेयी, लाल कृष्ण आडवाणी इत्यादि का बनाया हुआ है।

2004 रोजर फेडेरर ने हेंबर्ग मास्टर्स खिताब जीता।

2006 हालीवुड की चर्चित अदाकारा आस्कर पुरस्कार के लिए नामित नाओमी वाट्स को संयुक्त राष्ट्र का राजदूत बनाया गया। उन्होंने यूएनएड्स के लिए काम किया। इसी दिन न्यूजीलैंड के 47 वर्षीय मार्क इंजलिस ऐसे पहले पर्वतारोही बन गये, जिन्होंने कृत्रिम पैरों के सहारे एवरेस्ट की चोटी पर झंडा फहराया।

2007 निकोलस सरकोजी का राष्ट्रपति के तौर पर कार्यकाल शुरू हुआ।

2008 उच्चतम न्यायालय ने केन्द्रीय शिक्षण संस्थानों के स्नाकोत्तर पाठ्यक्रमों में 27 प्रतिशत ओबीसी कोटा पर रोक के कोलकाता उच्च न्यायालय के निर्णय को खारिज किया। इसी दिन प्रधानमंत्री मनमोहन सिंह भूटान की दो दिवसीय यात्रा पर राजधानी थिंपु पहुँचे।

2010 अजलान शाह कप हॉकी प्रतियोगिता में पिछले विजेता भारत और दक्षिण कोरिया को बारिश के कारण मैच न हो सकने पर संयुक्त विजेता घोषित किया गया। इसी दिन वेस्टइंडीज में आयोजित 20-20 विश्व कप के निर्णायक मैच में इंग्लैंड ने आस्ट्रेलिया के 147 रनों के लक्ष्य को तीन विकेट खोकर हासिल कर लिया और पहली बार विश्व विजेता बना। इसी दिन पूर्वी सूरीनाम में गोडो ओलो हवाई अड्डे से उड़ान भरते ही एंटोनोव एएन-28 विमान के दुर्घटनाग्रस्त हो जाने से छह यात्रियों और चालक दल के दो सदस्यों की मृत्यु हो गई।

2013 अमेरिकी वैज्ञानिकों को इंसानी भ्रूण के क्लोन से पहली बार स्टेम सेल निकालने में सफलता मिली थी। मेडिकल की दुनिया में इसे एक बहुत बड़ी सफलता माना गया क्योंकि इसके माध्यम से बहुत सी लाइलाज बीमारियों जैसे पार्किंसन, मल्टिपल स्क्लेरोसिस, रीढ़ में चोट और आंखों की रोशनी के इलाज की दिशा में लाभ होने की उम्मीद जगी।

2014 भारत के एक बड़े बिजनेसमैन रुस्तमजी होमसजी मोदी का निधन हुआ था। रुस्तमजी मोदी टाटा समूह के सदस्य और टाटा इस्पात के अध्यक्ष एवं प्रबंध निदेशक रहे थे। इसी दिन केन्या की राजधानी नैरौबी में एक धमाका हुआ जिसमें करीब 12 लोगों की मौत हो गई। 2014 में इसी तारीख को सोलहवें लोकसभा चुनाव में भारतीय जनता पार्टी के अगुवाई वाले एनडीए गठबंधन को पूर्ण बहुमत मिला।

2017 हरियाणा की एक कोर्ट ने ऐतिहासिक फैसला सुनाते हुए 10 साल की बच्ची को गर्भपात की इजाजत दी थी। बच्ची को 22 हफ्तों का गर्भ था। उस समय के भारतीय कानूनों के मुताबिक 20 हफ्तों से ज्यादा के गर्भपात की इजाजत नहीं थी। इसके बाद से ही गर्भपात से जुड़े भारतीय कानूनों में बदलाव की मांग उठने लगी। 2020 में सरकार ने मेडिकल टर्मिनेशन ऑफ प्रेग्नेंसी एक्ट-1971 में बदलाव करते हुए गर्भपात के लिए कानूनी सीमा को 20 से बढ़ाकर 24 हफ्ते कर दिया।

2020 सरकारी तौर पर भारत में कोरोना वायरस संक्रमण से मरने वालों की संख्या 2,752 और संक्रमितों की संख्या 85,940 हुई। हालांकि वास्तविक हालत इससे बहुत ज्यादा खराब थे।
