1723 बारहवें मुगल बादशाह मोहम्मद नेकु सियर का निधन हुआ।

1801 रणजीत सिंह ने खुद को पंजाब का महाराजा घोषित किया।

1861 अमेरिका में गृह युद्ध शुरू हुआ। अमेरिकी गृहयुद्ध की शुरुआत करते हुए दक्षिण कैरोलिना के चार्ल्सटन के बंदरगाह में फोर्ट सुमेर में कॉन्फेडरेट बलों ने गोलीबारी शुरू कर दी।

1885 मोहनजोदड़ो सभ्यता की खोज करने वाले प्रसिद्ध इतिहासकार राखालदास बनर्जी का जन्म हुआ। बनर्जी पुरातत्वज्ञ एवं इतिहासकार थे। बनर्जी भारतीय पुराविदों के उस समूह में से थे जिसमें से अधिकांश ने 20वीं शती के प्रथम चरण में तत्कालीन भारतीय पुरातत्व सर्वेक्षण के महानिदेशक जॉन मार्शल के सहयोगी के रूप में पुरातात्विक उत्खनन, शोध तथा स्मारकों के संरक्षण में यथेष्ट ख्याति अर्जित की।

1910 भारतीय फिल्म निर्देशक, निर्माता, पटकथा लेखक और हिंदी फिल्मों के गीतकार केदार शर्मा का जन्म हुआ।

1917 भारत के प्रख्यात क्रिकेटर हुए वीनू मांकड़ का जन्म हुआ।

1921 भारतीय जनसंघ और भारतीय जनता पार्टी के नेता हुए सुंदर सिंह भंडारी का जन्म हुआ।

1924 जाने-माने भारतीय चित्रकार हुए फ्रांसिस्को न्यूटन सूजा का जन्म हुआ।

1927 ब्रिटिश मंत्रीमंडल ने 21 वर्ष की महिलाओं को मतदान करने का अधिकार देने का समर्थन किया।

1928 जर्मन विमान ब्रेमेन ने अटलांटिक महासागर के पूर्व से पश्चिम की ओर पहली सफल उड़ान भरी। जाने माने भारतीय चित्रकार अकबर पदमसी का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1935 उत्तर प्रदेश के प्रमुख भाजपा नेता, मंत्री एवं लोकसभा सदस्य और बिहार के राज्यपाल रहे लालजी टंडन का जन्म लखनऊ में हुआ।

1937 हिंदी फिल्मों के प्रसिद्ध गीतकार गुलशन बावरा का जन्म हुआ।

1943 प्रसिद्ध महिला राजनीतिज्ञ एवं 16वीं लोकसभा की अध्यक्ष, भाजपा नेत्री सुमित्रा महाजन का जन्म हुआ।

1945 अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति फ्रैंकलिन डी रूजवेल्ट अपने कार्यालय में संदिग्ध परिस्थितियों में मृत पाये गये, उप राष्ट्रपति हैरी ट्रूमैन राष्ट्रपति बने। ट्रूमैन ने ही 6 एवं 9 अगस्त 1945 को जापान के हिरोशिमा और नागासाकी पर परमाणु बम गिरवाए।

1946 सीरिया पर फ्रांस का कब्जा समाप्त हुआ।

1949 दक्षिण अफ्रीका के नेता और मंत्री हुए परवीन जमनादास गोरधन का जन्म डर्बन में हुआ।

1952 जानी मानी, खूबसूरत, बोल्ड कन्नड़ अभिनेत्री, कास्ट्यूम डिजायनर और निर्देशिका वैशाली कसारावाली का जन्म कलबुर्गी, कर्नाटक में हुआ।

1954 प्रसिद्ध मार्क्सवादी, जनवादी नाटककार, कलाकार, निर्देशक एवं गीतकार सफदर हाशमी का जन्म हुआ। सफदर हाशमी ने थियेटर और नाटक का स्वरूप ही बदल दिया। सफदर ने नुक्कड़ नाटक किये। सत्ता के दमन के खिलाफ लिखे नाटक और कुछ समर्पित कलाकारों के साथ सफदर ने गली-मोहल्लों को ही अपना स्टेज बना लिया। दिल्ली के सेंट स्टीफेंस कॉलेज से उन्होंने अंग्रेजी में ग्रेजुएशन किया और फिर दिल्ली यूनिवर्सिटी से अंग्रेजी में ही एमए किया। 1973 में जन नाट्य मंच की स्थापना की। सफदर ने अपने जीवन में 24 नुक्कड़ नाटकों का 4000 से भी ज्यादा बार मंचन किया। वे मजदूरों की बस्तियों और फैक्ट्रियों के आसपास अपने नुक्कड़ नाटक करते थे। 1 जनवरी 1989 को जब वे दिल्ली से सटे साहिबाबाद के झंडापुर गांव में अपने नुक्कड़ नाटक ‘हल्ला बोल’ का प्रदर्शन कर रहे थे, तब उनके नाटक दल पर हमला हुआ। सफदर को काफी गंभीर चोटें आईं। 2 जनवरी को सुबह करीब 10 बजे सफदर हाशमी ने इस दुनिया को अलविदा कह दिया। नाटक के मंचन के दौरान ही सफदर पर हमला होने की वजह से नाटक अधूरा रह गया। सफदर की पत्नी मौलीश्री हाशमी ने उसे पूरा करने संकल्प लिया। 2 दिन बाद ठीक उसी जगह पर मौलीश्री ने हल्ला बोल नाटक का मंचन पूरा किया।

1955 डॉ जोेंस साल्क द्वारा विकसित पोलियो वैक्सीन को सुरक्षित और प्रभावी घोषित किया गया।

1961 सोवियत संघ ने पहला इंसान यूरी गैगरीन को अंतरिक्ष में भेजा।

1962 भारत के मशहूर कारोबारी हरि कृष्णा एक्सपोर्ट्स के मालिक सावजी ढोलकिया का जन्म हुआ।

1973 सूडान ने अपना संविधान बनाया।

1978 भारतीय रेलवे ने अपने 125 वर्ष पूरे होने के उपलक्ष्य में देश की पहली डबल डेकर ट्रेन बंबई के विक्टोरिया टर्मिनल से पुणे तक चलायी। पहले ट्रेन को जनता एक्सप्रेस कहा गया बाद में ट्रेन का नाम बदलकर सिंहगढ़ एक्सप्रेस कर दिया गया। इस ट्रेन का संचालन रेलवे द्वारा अभी भी किया जाता है। 1978 में इसी दिन एक सुप्रसिद्ध शायर हुए ताज भोपाली का निधन हुआ।

1979 बाॅलीवुड के प्रसिद्ध फिल्मकार, पटकथाकार बिजाॅय नांबियार का जन्म कोच्चि केरल में हुआ।

1981 अंतरिक्ष यान कोलंबिया पहली बार प्रेक्षेपित किया गया। 1981 में इसी दिन अमेरिकी कांग्रेस में पहली हिंदू अमेरिकी सांसद हुई तुलसी गेबार्ड का जन्म।

1991 खाड़ी युद्ध औपचारिक रूप से समाप्त घोषित हुआ।

1992 हैदराबाद के हुसैन सागर झील में विशालकाय बुद्ध प्रतिमा स्थापित की गई।

1997 जानी मानी खूबसूरत, बोल्ड भारतीय हिंदी तथा तेलुगू फिल्म एवं टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री तथा माॅडल उल्का गुप्ता का जन्म मुंबई में हुआ।

1998 गिरिजा प्रसाद कोइराला नेपाल के नये प्रधानमंत्री नियुक्त हुए।

2006 साइप्रस के राष्ट्रपति तसोस पापादोलस 6 दिवसीस यात्रा पर भारत पहुंचे। इसी दिन 2006 में प्रख्यात कन्नड़ फिल्म अभिनेता राजकुमार का निधन हुआ।

2007 पाकिस्तान ने ईरान गैस पाइनलाइन पर भारत को मंजूरी दी।

2008 अफगानिस्तान में भारतीयों के एक काफिले पर हुए आत्मघाती हमले में दो भारतीय इंजीनियरों सहित तीन लोगों की मौत। इसी दिन भारतीय मूल के प्रख्यात ब्रिटिश उद्योगपति और सांसद लॉर्ड स्वराजपाल के स्वामित्व वाले केपेरो समूह ने पश्चिम बंगाल के सिंगूर में मोटर वाहन के पुर्जे बनाने की तीन इकाइयां लगाने का फैसला किया।

2009 जिम्बाब्वे ने अपनी आधिकारिक मुद्रा जिम्बाब्वे डॉलर का परित्याग किया।

2010 लुधियाना, पंजाब (भारत) के गुरु नानक देव स्टेडियम में भारतीय कबड्डी टीम ने पाकिस्तान की टीम को 58-24 से हरा कर प्रथम विश्व कप कबड्डी प्रतियोगिता जीती। ब्रिटिश-भारतीय लेखक राणा दासगुप्ता को महागाथा सोलो के लिए 2010 का कॉमनवैल्थ राइटर्स पुरस्कार देने की घोषणा की गई। ऑस्ट्रेलियाई ग्लेंडा गेस्ट के सिडॉन रॉक को पुरस्कार के ग्रांड फिनाले में श्रेष्ठ पहली पुस्तक का अवार्ड मिला।

2013 फ्रांसीसी संसद ने समलैंगिक विवाह को मान्यता दी।

2014 शोधकर्ताओं ने एक नई दवा की घोषणा की जो हेपेटाइटिस सी को ठीक कर सकती है, परीक्षणों में 90 प्रतिशत रोगियों को 12 सप्ताह के बाद वायरस से मुक्त घोषित किया गया। 2014 ओरेकल कॉरपोरेशन के लैरी एलिसन को लगातार दूसरे साल सबसे अधिक वेतन पाने वाले अमेरिकी कार्यकारी अधिकारी का दर्जा दिया गया है। एलिसन का 2013 का मुआवजा 78.4 मिलियन डाॅलर है, जो रनर-अप रॉबर्ट इगर के वॉल्ट डिजनी कॉर्प के 34.3 मिलियन डाॅलर से दोगुना से अधिक है। 2014 में इसी दिन मशहूर गीतकार, कथाकार, पटकथा लेखक गुलजार को वर्ष 2013 का दादासाहब फालके पुरस्कार दिया गया।

1723 Mohammad Neku Siyar, the twelfth Mughal emperor, died.

1776 During the American Revolution, the North Carolina Provincial Congress passed the Halifax Resolutions, agreeing to campaign for effective action for independence from Britain.

1801 William Cray was appointed Professor of Bengali Language at Fort William College, Calcutta.

1801 Ranjit Singh declared himself the Maharaja of Punjab.

1945 US President Franklin D. Roosevelt is found dead in his office under suspicious circumstances, Vice President Harry Truman becomes President. It was Truman who dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki of Japan on 6 and 9 August 1945.

1946 French occupation of Syria ends.

1949 Parvin Jamnadas Gordhan, South African leader and minister, was born in Durban.

1952 Vaishali Kasaravali, well-known, beautiful and bold Kannada actress, costume designer and director, was born in Kalaburagi, Karnataka.

1954 Famous Marxist, democratic playwright, artist, director and lyricist Safdar Hashmi was born. Safdar Hashmi changed the nature of theater and drama. Safdar did street plays. Safdar made the street-neighbourhood his stage with plays written against the oppression of power and some dedicated artists. He did his graduation in English from St. Stephen's College, Delhi and then did his MA in English from Delhi University. Jan Natya Manch was established in 1973. Safdar staged 24 street plays more than 4000 times in his life. They used to perform their street plays around the labor colonies and factories. On January 1, 1989, when he was performing his street play 'Halla Bol' in Jhandapur village of Sahibabad, adjacent to Delhi, his drama troupe was attacked. Safdar received very serious injuries. Safdar Hashmi said goodbye to this world on January 2 at around 10 am. Due to attack on Safdar during the staging of the play, the play remained incomplete. Safdar's wife Maulisree Hashmi resolved to fulfill it. Two days later, at the same place, Maulishree completed the staging of the play Halla Bol.
