1502 स्पेन के राजा ने सभी मुस्लिमों को ईसाई बन जाने का आदेश दिया। मजबूरन बहुत से लोग ईसाई बने और बहुत से स्पेन छोड़ गये। 1609 में आखिरी मौलाना को जो धर्म परिवर्तन को तैयार नहीं था स्पेन से बाहर कर दिया गया।

1735 अलेक्जेंडर पोप की कविता एपेलल को डॉ अरबथनोट ने लंदन में प्रकाशित किया।

1757 ब्रिटिश सैनिकों ने भारत के कलकत्ता शहर पर कब्जा किया।

1839 फ्रांस के प्रसिद्ध फोटोग्राफर लुई दागुएरे ने चांद की पहली फोटो प्रदर्शित की।

1843 डाक सेवा नियमित रुप से आंरभ हुई और ऑस्ट्रिया की राजधानी विएना में पहली पत्र पेटिका लगाई गई।

1878 केरल के प्रसिद्ध समाज सुधारक मन्नत्तु पद्मनाभन का जन्म हुआ।

1882 लंदन में दुनिया का पहला कोयला आधारित बिजली उत्पादक स्टेशन होलबोर्न व्यदक्त पावर स्टेशन शुरू किया गया।

1890 ऐलिस सेंगर व्हाइट हाउस में पहली महिला कर्मचारी बनी। प्रेसीडेंट बेंजामिन हैरीसन ने उनका स्वागत किया। ऐलिस राष्ट्रपति की सचिव बनीं।

1896 विख्यात बांग्ला बाल साहित्यकार खगेंद्रनाथ मित्रा का कलकत्ता में जन्म हुआ।

1899 भारत के प्रथम चुनाव आयुक्त सुकुमार का जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन रामकृष्ण परमहंस के आदेश के बाद साधु कलकत्ता (अब कोलकाता) स्थित बेलूर मठ में रहने लगे।

1905 हिंदी साहित्य के प्रसिद्ध मनोवैज्ञानिक कथाकार और उपन्यासकार जैनेन्द्र कुमार का जन्म हुआ।

1906 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय उद्यमी, भारत के दुग्ध उद्योग में महत्वपूर्ण योगदान देने वाले डी. एन. खुरोदे का जन्म 1906 में हुआ।

1915 रूसी सेनाओं ने अहमद पाशा के नेतृत्व वाली तुर्की सेना को बुरी तरह हराया। इसमें तुर्की के 70 हजार सैनिक मारे गए।

1932 सिख धार्मिक नेता हरचंद सिंह लौंगोवाल का जन्म हुआ। 1980 के दशक के खालिस्तानी उग्रवाद के दौरान प्रधानमंत्री राजीव गांधी और हरचंद सिंह लौंगोवाल के बीच समझौता हुआ। इसके बाद खालिस्तानियों की आतंकी गतिविधियों में कमी आई थी।

1940 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय अमरीकी गणितज्ञ एसआर श्रीनिवास वर्द्धन का जन्म हुआ।

1941 द्वितीय विश्व युद्ध के दौरान जर्मनी के हमले से ब्रिटेन के कार्डिफ शहर स्थित लेनडॉफ कैथेड्रल को भारी नुकसान हुआ।

1942 द्वितीय विश्व युद्ध के दौरान जापानी सेना ने फिलीपींस की राजधानी मनीला पर कब्जा किया।

1944 छुआछूत और दलितों से भेदभाव के विरुद्ध लगातार अभियान चलाने वाले महाराष्ट्र के एक प्रमुख सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता विट्ठल शिंदे का निधन हुआ।

1950 प्रसिद्ध महिला स्वतंत्रता सेनानी तथा सामाजिक डॉ. राधाबाई की मृत्यु हुई।

1954 पद्म विभूषण पुरस्कार की स्थापना 2 जनवरी की गयी थी। इसी दिन भारत रत्न पुरस्कार प्रारम्भ किया गया।

1959 जाने माने क्रिकेटर कीर्ति आजाद का जन्म हुआ।

1959 चंद्रमा के निकट पहुंचने वाला अंतरिक्ष यान लूना 1 लॉन्च किया गया था। ये पहली बार था, जब कोई इंसानी ईजाद चांद के बेहद करीब पहुंची थी। ये चांद की सतह से 6 हजार 400 किमी दूर था। इसे समाजवादी देश सोवियत संघ ने लॉन्च किया था, लेकिन तकनीकी खराबी की वजह से ये चांद की सतह पर नहीं उतर पाया था। सोवियत संघ इससे पहले भी तीन बार मिशन लॉन्च कर चुका था, लेकिन उसे कामयाबी नहीं मिल सकी थी। लूना 1 ने अपने सफर के दौरान सोलर स्टॉर्म्स के बारे में जानकारी दी। सोलर स्टॉर्म्स से ही पता चला कि अंतरिक्ष में भी पृथ्वी की तरह तूफान आते हैं। इसके साथ ही लूना 1 पहला अंतरिक्ष यान था, जिसने पृथ्वी की एस्केप वैलोसिटी को पार किया था। एस्केप वैलोसिटी के बिना कोई भी चीज पृथ्वी के ग्रेविटेशनल एरिया यानी गुरुत्वाकर्षण क्षेत्र से बाहर नहीं जा सकती। पृथ्वी की एस्केप वैलोसिटी 11.2 किमी प्रति सेकंड है। ये आवाज की रफ्तार से 33 गुना ज्यादा है।

1960 विख्यात भारतीय क्रिकेटर रमन लांबा का जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन हरियाणा की जानी मानी सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता, वाॅलीबाॅल खिलाड़ी जगमति सांगवान का जन्म हुआ।

1964 जानी मानी दक्षिण भारतीय फिल्म अभिनेत्री शांति कृष्णा का जन्म हुआ।

1967 हाॅलीवुड फिल्मों के पूर्व अभिनेता रोनाल्ड रीगन ने सरकार में अपना करियर शुरू किया जब उन्होंने कैलिफोर्निया के 33 वें गवर्नर के रूप में शपथ ली। 1980 के दशक में वे दो बार राष्ट्रपति रहे। 1982 में प्रधानमंत्री श्रीमती इंदिरा गांधी ने पहली अमेरिका यात्रा की तो बहुत उत्साह से उनका स्वागत रेगन और उनकी पत्नी नैंसी ने किया।

1970 विश्व प्रसिद्ध भारतीय तैराक बुला चौधरी का जन्म हुआ। इन्हें अनेक सम्मान, पुरस्कार मिले और यह एक बार विधायक भी चुनी गईं।

1971 स्कॉटलैंड के ग्लासगो के इब्रो पार्क में, ओल्ड फर्म फुटबॉल मैच के दौरान भगदड़ में 66 लोग मारे गए थे।

1975 हिरासत में बांग्लादेश के क्रांतिकारी नेता सिराज सिक्कर को पुलिस ने जान से मार दिया।

1980 ब्रिटिश स्टील कॉर्पोरेशन प्लांट में काम करने वाले कर्मचारियों ने पचास साल में पहली हार राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर हड़ताल की।

1983 जानी मानी हाॅलीवुड अभिनेत्री केट बाॅस्वर्थ का जन्म हुआ।

1983 जाने माने पंजाबी फिल्म अभिनेता जिप्पी ग्रेवाल का जन्म हुआ।

1987 भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के प्रमुख नेता तथा आधुनिक उड़ीसा के निर्माता कहे गये हरे कृष्ण मेहताब का देहावसान हुआ।

1989 रणसिंधे प्रेमदासा श्रीलंका के राष्ट्रपति बने।

1989 लोकप्रिय जनपक्षधर नाट्यकर्मी, लेखक, कवि, गीतकार, सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता सफदर हाशमी को 1989 में 1 जनवरी को एक नुक्कड़ नाटक के दौरान असामाजिक तत्वों ने बड़ी बेहरमी से पीटा इसी कारण उनकी मौत 2 जनवरी को हो गई।

1991 तिरुअनंतपुरम हवाई अड्डा को अंतर्राष्ट्रीय स्तर का बनाया गया।

1993 श्रीलंका गृह युद्ध में श्रीलंकाई नौसेना ने जाफना क्षेत्र में 35 से 100 नागरिकों की बेरहमी से हत्या की।

1998 नाइजीरिया के प्रधानमंत्री हामा अमादाउ को राष्ट्रपति इब्राहीम बारेमआनससेरा की हत्या की साजिश के आरोप में गिरफ्तार कर लिया गया।

2001 बांग्लादेश में फतवा अवैध घोषित हुआ।

2002 अर्जेन्टीना में 12 दिन में पांचवां राष्ट्रपति नियुक्त, देश दिवालिया घोषित, काठमाण्डू में दक्षेस विदेश मंत्रियों की बैठक प्रारम्भ, पाकिस्तान आतंकवादियों को सौंपने के लिए सशर्त तैयार।

2008 अमेरिका के सैन फ्रांसिस्को में रहने वाली समन हसनैन वर्ष 2002 की मिसेज पाकिस्तान वर्ल्ड चुनी गईं। 2008 में इसी दिन दुनिया में पहली बार, कच्चे तेल यानी क्रूड आॅयल की कीमतें 100 डॉलर प्रति बैरल तक पहुंच गई।

2009 भारतीय रिजर्व बैंक ने बाजार में 20 करोड़ रुपये के राहत पैकेज देने का निर्णय लिया। इसी दिन भारत के सौरभ घोषाल स्कवैश रैकिंग में कैरियर की सर्वश्रेष्ठ रैकिंग हासिल करने वाले पहले खिलाड़ी बने।

2010 सोमालियाई जलदस्युओं ने इटली के जेनओआ से सोमालिया होते हुए भारत के कांडला बंदरगाह आ रहे सिंगापुर ध्वजवाहक एम.वी. प्रमोनी नामक रसायनिक जलपोत का अपहरण कर लिया।  इसी दिन 2010 में प्रसिद्ध गुजराती साहित्यकार राजेन्द्र शाह का निधन हुआ।

2011 प्रसिद्ध स्वतंत्रता सेनानी एवं पूर्व लोकसभा अध्यक्ष बली राम भगत का देहावसान हुआ।

2015 वसंत गोवारीकर भारतीय वैज्ञानिक और इसरो के अध्यक्ष का डेंगू और मूत्रपथ के संक्रमण से निधन हुआ।

2016 सऊदी अरब के जाने माने शिया मौलवी निम्र अल निम्र और 46 अन्य साथियों को सरकार की ओर से फाँसी दी गई।

2018 जाने माने उर्दू शायर, यश भारती सम्मान प्राप्त अनवर जलालपुरी का निध हुआ। इन्होंने भगवद् गीता का उर्दू में अनुवाद किया था।

2020 भारत सरकार ने चंद्रयान-3 अभियान को मंजूरी दी। इसी दिन भारत के पहले सीडीएस जनरल बिपिन रावत ने अपने कार्यकाल के पहले दिन की शुरुआत दिल्ली स्थित राष्ट्रीय युद्ध स्मारक पर शहीदों को श्रद्धासुमन अर्पित करने के साथ की। इसी दिन दृष्टिबाधित लोगों को नोटों की पहचान करने में मदद हेतु भारतीय रिजर्व बैंक ने मनी मोबाइल ऐप लांच किया।

1757 British troops capture the Indian city of Calcutta.

1839 Louis Daguerre, the famous photographer of France, displayed the first photo of the moon.

1843 Postal service started regularly and the first letter box was installed in Vienna, the capital of Austria.

1878 Mannattu Padmanabhan, famous social reformer of Kerala, was born.

1882 Holborn Individual Power Station, the world's first coal-fired power generating station, is commissioned in London.

1890 Alice Sanger becomes the first female staffer at the White House. He was received by President Benjamin Harrison. Alice became the secretary to the President.

1996 Khagendranath Mitra, noted Bengali children's writer, was born in Calcutta.

1899 Sukumar, the first Election Commissioner of India, was born. On this day following the order of Ramakrishna Paramhansa, the sages started living in Belur Math located in Calcutta (now Kolkata).

1905 Jainendra Kumar, famous psychological story writer and novelist of Hindi literature, was born.

1906 Renowned Indian entrepreneur, D.N. Khurode was born in 1906.

1915 Russian forces badly defeat Turkish army led by Ahmed Pasha. 70 thousand Turkish soldiers were killed in this.

1932 Harchand Singh Longowal, Sikh religious leader, was born. During the Khalistani insurgency of the 1980s, a settlement was reached between Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Harchand Singh Longowal. After this there was a decrease in the terrorist activities of the Khalistanis.

1940 SR Srinivasa Vardhan, noted Indian-American mathematician, was born.

1941 Lendoff Cathedral in Cardiff, UK, is heavily damaged by German invasion during World War II.

1942 During World War II, Japanese forces captured Manila, the capital of the Philippines.

1944 Vithal Shinde, a prominent social worker of Maharashtra, who campaigned continuously against untouchability and discrimination against Dalits, passed away.

1950 Famous woman freedom fighter and social Dr. Radhabai died.

1954 The Padma Vibhushan Award was established on 2 January. Bharat Ratna Award was started on this day.

1959 Kirti Azad, noted cricketer, was born.

1959 Luna 1, the spacecraft to approach the Moon, was launched. This was the first time that a human invention reached very close to the moon. It was 6 thousand 400 km away from the surface of the moon. It was launched by the socialist country Soviet Union, but due to a technical fault, it could not land on the surface of the moon. The Soviet Union had launched the mission three times earlier also, but it could not get success. Luna 1 gave information about solar storms during its journey. It was only from solar storms that it came to be known that storms occur in space as well as on Earth. Additionally, Luna 1 was the first spacecraft to exceed Earth's escape velocity. Without escape velocity, nothing can go out of the Earth's gravitational field. Earth's escape velocity is 11.2 km per second. This is 33 times more than the speed of sound.

1960 Raman Lamba, noted Indian cricketer, was born. On this day Haryana's well-known social worker, volleyball player Jagmati Sangwan was born.

1964 Shanti Krishna, noted South Indian film actress, was born.

1967 Former Hollywood actor Ronald Reagan begins his career in government when he is sworn in as the 33rd Governor of California. He was President twice in the 1980s. In 1982, when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi made her first visit to America, she was enthusiastically welcomed by Regan and his wife Nancy.

1970 Bula Chowdhary, world famous Indian swimmer, was born. She received many honors, awards and was also elected as an MLA once.

1971 At Ibrox Park in Glasgow, Scotland, 66 people are killed in a stampede during an Old Firm football match.

1975 Bangladesh's revolutionary leader Siraj Sikkar was killed by the police in custody.

1980 Workers at a British Steel Corporation plant strike, the first defeat at a national level in fifty years.

1983: Kate Basworth, well-known Hollywood actress, was born.

1983: Zippy Grewal, noted Punjabi film actor, was born.

1987 Hare Krishna Mehtab, a prominent leader of the Indian National Congress and known as the builder of modern Odisha, passed away.

1989 Ranasindhe Premadasa became the President of Sri Lanka.

1989 Popular pro-people dramatist, writer, poet, lyricist, social worker Safdar Hashmi was mercilessly beaten up by anti-social elements during a street play on January 1, 1989, due to which he died on January 2.

1991 Thiruvananthapuram airport was upgraded to international standard.

In the 1993 Sri Lankan Civil War, the Sri Lankan Navy brutally killed 35 to 100 civilians in the Jaffna area.

1998 Nigeria's Prime Minister Hama Amadou is arrested on charges of plotting to assassinate President Ibrahim Baramansera.

2001 Fatwas declared illegal in Bangladesh.

2002 Fifth President appointed in Argentina in 12 days, country declared bankrupt, SAARC Foreign Ministers meeting begins in Kathmandu, Pakistan conditionally ready to hand over terrorists.

2008 Saman Hasnain, who lives in San Francisco, USA, was elected Mrs. Pakistan World of the year 2002. On this day in 2008, for the first time in the world, crude oil prices reached $100 per barrel.

2009 The Reserve Bank of India decided to give a relief package of Rs 20 crores to the market. On the same day, India's Saurabh Ghosal became the first player to achieve a career-best ranking in the squash rankings.

2010 Somalian pirates hijacked the Singapore flag carrier MV M.V. Hijacked a chemical vessel named Pramoni. On this day in 2010, famous Gujarati litterateur Rajendra Shah passed away.

2011 Famous freedom fighter and former Lok Sabha Speaker Bali Ram Bhagat passed away.

2015 Vasant Gowariker, Indian scientist and chairman of ISRO, died of dengue and urinary tract infection.

2016 Saudi Arabia's well-known Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr and 46 other companions were hanged by the government.

2018 Renowned Urdu poet, Yash Bharti awardee Anwar Jalalpuri passed away. He translated the Bhagavad Gita into Urdu.

2020 Government of India approves Chandrayaan-3 mission. On the same day, India's first CDS General Bipin Rawat started the first day of his tenure by paying homage to the martyrs at the National War Memorial in Delhi. On the same day, the Reserve Bank of India launched the Money Mobile app to help visually impaired people identify notes.
