69 ओथो ने रोम में सत्ता पर कब्जा कर लिया, खुद को रोम का सम्राट घोषित किया। 10 जनवरी 69 को लूसियस कैलपर्निअस पिसो लिसिनियानस को रोमन सम्राट गल्बा ने उप रोमन सम्राट नियुक्त किया। लूसियस कैलपर्निअस पिसो फ्रूगी लिसिनियानस रोमन रईस थे। 10 जनवरी 69 ईस्वी को रोमन सम्राट गैल्बा ने उसे गोद ले लिया। इससे नीरो के मित्र रहे ओथो ने दोनों की हत्या कर दी और सम्राट बन गया। उसने गल्बा से खुद को गोद लेने की इच्छा जताई थी। 3 महीने शासन करने के बाद ओथो ने आत्महत्या कर ली।

570 इते इंगेन चिन फहलाद का निधन हुआ। इडे, इटा, इडा या आइडेस के नाम से भी इन्हें जाना जाता है। यह प्रारंभिक आयरिश नन और किलीडी (क्लुएन क्रेडेल) के संरक्षक संत थीं। उन्हें एरिन के संतों की पालक माँ के रूप में जाना जाता है। इता (पवित्रता की प्यास) नाम उन्हें उनके संत गुणों के कारण दिया गया था। उसकी पुण्य तिथ पर 15 जनवरी को सामूहिक भोज होता है।

1541 फ्रांस के राजा फ्रांसिस प्रथम ने जीन-फ्रांकोइस रोबरवाल को न्यू फ्रांस (कनाडा) प्रांत को बसाने और पवित्र कैथोलिक विश्वास के प्रसार के लिए एक कमीशन यानी अधिकार दिया।

1559 एलिजाबेथ प्रथम को लंदन के वेस्टमिंस्टर एब्बे में इंग्लैंड और आयरलैंड की रानी का ताज पहनाया गया।

1582 यम-जापोलस्की का युद्धविराम के तहत रूस ने लिवोनिया को पोलिश-लिथुआनियाई राष्ट्रमंडल को सौंप दिया।

1622 विख्यात फ्रांसीसी अभिनेता और नाटककार मोलिएरे का जन्म हुआ।

1623 प्रसिद्ध ब्रिटिश दार्शनिक अल्गर्नन सिडनी का जन्म हुआ।

1759 लंदन स्थित मोंटेगुवे हाउस में ब्रिटिश संग्रहालय की स्थापना हुई। यह मानव सभ्यता के इतिहास की जानकारियां और वस्तुएं समेटे हुए विश्व का प्रमुखतम संग्रहालय है।

1761 प्रसिद्ध मराठा शासक सदाशिवराव भाऊ का निधन हुआ।

1784 एशियाटिक सोसायटी ऑफ बंगाल की स्थापना कलकत्ता के फोर्ट विलियम में विलियम जोंस ने करवाई। इसका उद्देश्य प्राच्य-अध्ययन को बढ़ावा देना था। इसके अलावा एशियाटिक सोसाइटी ऑफ बंगाल ने भारतीय इतिहास को भी प्रभावित किया है। इसने प्राचीन के इतिहास और संस्कृति के अध्ययन कार्य को शोधार्थियों के लिए सुलभ बनाया। इसमें शोधार्थी, अध्ययनकर्ता, लेखक, बुद्धिजीवी और पर्यटक आते थे।

1888 प्रमुख भारतीय स्वतंत्रता सेनानी, चिंतक, अधिवक्ता, राजनेता और सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता डाॅ. सैफुद्दीन किचलू का जन्म अमृतसर में हुआ।

1905 तोरीन थैटचर के नाम से सुपरिचित विख्यात ब्रिटिश अभिनेता तोरीन हर्बर्ट एर्सकाइन का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1918 यशवंत अग्रवाडेकर का जन्म हुआ। वे गोमांतक दल के उग्र क्रांतिकारी थे।

1919 बर्लिन, वीमर गणराज्य में रोजा लक्जमबर्ग (पोलिश रोजा लुक्सेनबर्ग जन्म रोजालिया लुक्सेनबर्ग 5 मार्च 1871) का निधन हुआ। रोजा पोलिश और प्राकृतिक-जर्मन थी, क्रांतिकारी समाजवादी, रूढ़िवादी मार्क्सवादी और युद्ध-विरोधी कार्यकर्ता। 19वीं सदी के अंत और 20वीं सदी की शुरुआत में पोलैंड और जर्मनी के क्रांतिकारी समाजवादी आंदोलनों की एक प्रमुख हस्ती बनीं।

1921 चलती का नाम गाड़ी, जाॅनी मेरा नाम, बीस साल बाद, अप्रैल फूल, रेल का डिब्बा और झुमरू जैसी तमाम लोकप्रिय फिल्मों में काम करने वाले प्रसिद्ध अभिनेता सज्जन का जयपुर में जन्म हुआ।

1926 हेलसिंकी समर ओलंपिक 1952 में कांस्य पदक जीतने वाले प्रसिद्ध भारतीय पहलवान खशावा दादासाहेब जाधव का जन्म सतारा महाराष्ट्र में हुआ।

1929 को अटलांटा, जॉर्जिया, अमेरिका में डॉ. मार्टिन लूथर किंग जूनियर का जन्म हुआ। वे अमेरिका के एक पादरी, प्रमुख आंदोलनकारी, एवं अफ्रीकी-अमेरिकी नागरिक अधिकारों के संघर्ष के प्रमुख नेता थे। उन्हें अमेरिका का गांधी भी कहा जाता है। उनके प्रयत्नों से अमेरिका में नागरिक अधिकारों के क्षेत्र में प्रगति हुईय इसलिये उन्हें आज मानव अधिकारों के प्रतीक के रूप में भी देखा जाता है और 15 जनवरी को संपूर्ण अमेरिका में मार्टिन लूथर किंग जूनियर डे मनाया जाता है। इस दिन सार्वजनिक अवकाश रहता है।

1934 बिहार में जबरदस्त भूकंप से करीब 20 हजार लोगों की मौत हुई। 15 जनवरी 1934 को भारत और नेपाल में एक खतरनाक भूकंप आया था। इस भूकंप में 11 हजार से ज्यादा लोग मारे गए थे। रिक्टर स्केल पर इसकी तीव्रता 8.3 मापी गई थी। भूकंप के झटके इतने जोरदार थे कि इन्हें बंबई तक महसूस किया गया था। बिहार के मुंगेर और मुजफ्फरपुर शहर पूरी तरह बर्बाद हो गए थे। इसके साथ ही मोतिहारी और दरभंगा शहर में भी भारी नुकसान हुआ था। नेपाल के काठमांडू, भटगांव और पाटन में भी कई इमारतें ढह गई थीं और सड़कों में दरारें पड़ गई थीं।

1947 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय छात्र नेता और सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता जार्ज रेड्डी का जन्म पलक्कड़ में हुआ।

1949 केएम करियप्पा भारतीय थल सेना के पहले कमांडर-इन-चीफ बने। तब से 15 जनवरी को सेना दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाता है। 1949 में फील्ड मार्शल के. एम. करियप्पा ने जनरल फ्रांसिस बुचर से भारतीय सेना की कमान ली थी।

1951 जाने माने भारतीय लेखक, कवि, पत्रकार, दूरदर्शन शो प्रस्तोता और प्रसिद्ध हिंदी पत्रिका धर्मयुग के प्रमुख रहे प्रतीश नंदी का जन्म भागलपुर में हुआ।

1956 भारत की प्रमुख महिला राजनेत्रियों में से एक बहुजन समाज पार्टी की मुखिया, कई बार उत्तर प्रदेश की मुख्यमंत्री रहीं मायावती का जन्म नई दिल्ली में हुआ।

1959 भारत के वित्त सचिव सहित अहम पदों पर रहे आईएएस अफसर अजय नारायण झा का जन्म बिहार में हुआ।

1965 फूड काॅरपोरेशन आॅफ इंडिया एफसीआई यानी भारतीय खाद्य निगम की स्थापना हुई। इससे पहले खाद्यान्न की बहुत बर्बादी होती थी और देश अनाज के मामले में आत्मनिर्भर नहीं था। प्रधानमंत्री लाल बहादुर शास्त्री ने खाद्यान्न उत्पादन, संग्रह और वितरण के लिए बहुत काम किया।

1967 जानी मानी दक्षिण भारतीय एवं फिल्म अभिनेत्री, कुचिपुड़ी नृत्यांग्ना और स्वर कलाकार भानुप्रिया का जन्म हुआ।

1975 पुर्तगाल ने अंगोला की आजादी के लिए समझौते पर हस्ताक्षर किये।

1978 समाजवादी पार्टी अध्यक्ष अखिलेश यादव की पत्नी और उत्तर प्रदेश के कन्नौज से लोक सभा सदस्य डिंपल यादव का जन्म हुआ।

1982 जाने माने पाश्र्व गायक मुकेश के बेटे नितिन मुकेश के पुत्र नील नितिन मुकेश का जन्म हुआ। नील लेखक, फिल्म निर्माता और अभिनेता हैं।

1983 यासीन भटकल का जन्म हुआ। इन्हें तथाकथित इस्लामिक आतंकी संगठन इंडियन मुजाहिदीन का कारकून बताया जाता है।

1986 प्रसिद्ध तमिल फिल्म अभिनेता एवं माॅडल विक्रम प्रभु का मद्रास में जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन जानी मानी अमेरिकी फिल्म अभिनेत्री और माॅडल जेस्सी स्क्रैम का जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन 1986 में थल सेना के प्रथम कमांडर इन चीफ के एम करियप्पा (सेवानिवृत्त) को फील्ड मार्शल की पदवी दी गई।

1988 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय गेंदबाज नरेंद्र हिरवानी ने ऐतिहासिक उपलब्धि हासिल करते हुये वेस्टइंडीज के खिलाफ अपने पहले टेस्ट मैच में ही 16 विकेट लिए।

1991 प्रसिद्ध तेलुगू फिल्म अभिनेता, लेखक और पत्रकार राहुल रामाकृष्णा का जन्म सिकंद्राबाद, आंध्र प्रदेश में हुआ।

1992 बुल्गारिया ने बाल्कन के देश मैसिडोनिया को मान्यता दी।

1998 भारत के कई बार कार्यकारी प्रधानमंत्री रहे गुलजारी लाल नंदा का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन ढाका में त्रिदेशीय भारत, बांग्लादेश तथा पाकिस्तान का शिखर सम्मेलन प्रारंभ हुआ। इसी दिन प्रसिद्ध भारतीय पेशेवर फुटबॉलर अनिरुद्ध थापा का देहरादून में जन्म हुआ।

1999 एनी फ्रैंक घोषणा पत्र पर हस्ताक्षर करने वाले प्रथम विश्व नेता संयुक्त राष्ट्रसंघ के महासचिव कोफी अन्नान बने। इसी दिन पाकिस्तान में सभी नागरिक प्रशासनिक कार्य सेना को हस्तांतरित किए गए।

2001 जब हम किसी प्रकार की जानकारी लेने के लिए गूगल सर्च करते हैं तो विकिपीडिया सबसे टाॅप पर उससे संबंधित जानकारी देता है। दुनिया भर में जानकारी हासिल करने का विकिपीडिया सबसे बड़ा माध्यम है। विकिपीडिया को 15 जनवरी 2001 को जिमी वेल्स और लैरी सैंगर ने शुरू किया था। विकिपीडिया को इस सोच के साथ शुरू किया गया था कि कोई भी व्यक्ति इसे एडिट कर सकता है। टेक्नोलॉजी की दुनिया में ऐसे तरीके से इकट्ठा की गई जानकारी को क्राउड सोर्सिंग कहा जाता है। शुरुआत में विकिपीडिया केवल अंग्रेजी भाषा में ही लॉन्च किया गया था, लेकिन वर्तमान में यह 300 से ज्यादा भाषाओं में उपलब्ध है। 2003 में विकिपीडिया को हिंदी में लॉन्च किया गया था। विकिपीडिया में करीब 5.5 करोड़ से ज्यादा आर्टिकल मौजूद हैं और हर महीने 2 अरब से ज्यादा यूजर्स विकिपीडिया पेज पर आते हैं। जिमी वेल्स और लैरी सैंगर ने विकिपीडिया शुरू करने से पहले न्यूपीडिया नाम से ऐनसाइक्लोपीडिया लॉन्च किया था। इसमें एक्सपर्ट आर्टिकल लिखा करते थे और रिव्यू होने के बाद ही उसे पब्लिश किया जाता था। बाद में जब विकिपीडिया लॉन्च किया गया, तब उसमें हर यूजर को एडिटिंग की इजाजत नहीं थी, लेकिन कुछ महीनों बाद इसमें सभी यूजर को एडिटिंग की इजाजत मिल गई। विकिपीडिया इस तरह डिजायन किया गया है कि कोई भी व्यक्ति इस पर मौजूद सामग्री को संपादित कर सकता है। मतलब, कोई भी व्यक्ति विकिपीडिया पेज पर मौजूद किसी भी सामग्री में बदलाव कर सकता है। इसे लेकर विकिपीडिया की आलोचना भी होती रही है क्योंकि लोग कई बार गलत जानकारी भी इस पर डाल देते हैं। इस कारण विकिपीडिया को जानकारी का भरोसेमंद जरिया भी नहीं माना जाता है। विकिपीडिया टीम लगातार इस प्रक्रिया में सुधार करती रहती है। वह न केवल अपने पेज पर हर ताजा जानकारी तुरंत अपडेट करती है, बल्कि अगर किसी ने जानबूझकर तथ्यों से छेड़छाड़ करते हुए पेज को एडिट किया है, तो विकिपीडिया टीम उस गलती को भी जल्दी ही सुधार देती है।

2006 ब्रिटिश हाईकोर्ट ने प्रसिद्ध इतालवी कारोबारी और भारत सहित दुनिया भर में हथियार खरीद-फरोख्त के दलाल आॅक्टोवियो क्वात्रोच्चि के दो बैंक खातों से प्रतिबंध हटाने का आदेश दिया।

2007 इराकी राष्ट्रपति सद्दाम हुसैन के सौतेले भाई एवं इराकी अदालत के पूर्व प्रमुख फाँसी पर चढ़ाये गये।

2008 सरकारी क्षेत्र की कंपनी गैस अथोरिटी ऑफ इंडिया लिमिटेड (गेल) के बोर्ड ने महाराष्ट्र के दाभोल से बंगलुरु तक गैस पाइप लाइन बिछाने के प्रोजेक्ट को मंजूरी दी। इसी दिन उत्तर प्रदेश की मुख्यमंत्री मायावती ने गंगा एक्सप्रेस वे परियोजना का शिलान्यास किया। इसी दिन प्रधानमंत्री मनमोहन सिंह की चीन यात्रा के दौरान भारत-चीन सीमा विवाद पर बातचीत की गई। खगोलविदों ने धरती से 25 करोड़ प्रकाश वर्ष दूर की आकाश गंगा के जीवन के लिये जरूरी तत्त्व खोजने का दावा किया।

2009 दादा साहेब फाल्के पुरस्कार विजेता व प्रसिद्ध फिल्म निर्माता तपन सिन्हा का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन फिल्म स्लमडॉग मिलेनियर को बाफ्टा पुरस्कार की श्रेणियों में स्थान मिला।

2010 तीन घंटे से भी अधिक की अवधि वाला शताब्दी का सबसे लंबा सूर्य ग्रहण लगा। भारत में यह 11 बजकर 06 मिनट पर शुरू होकर 3 बजकर पाँच मिनट पर खत्म हुआ। दोपहर 1.15 पर सूर्य ग्रहण अपने चरम पर था. यह वलयाकार सूर्य ग्रहण था। इसके कारण ऊपरी वातावरण पर तथा पृथ्वी के वातावरण पर पड़ने वाले प्रभावों के अध्ययन के लिए भारतीय अंतरिक्ष अनुसंधान संगठन (इसरो) ने छह रॉकेटों का प्रक्षेपण किया।

2012 डालडा 13 के नाम से मशहूर प्रथम भारतीय महिला फोटो पत्रकार पद्मविभूषण सम्मान प्राप्त होमी व्यारावाला का निधन वडोदरा में हुआ। 

2013 सीरिया की अलेप्पो यूनिवर्सिटी में रॉकेट हमले में 83 लोगों की मौत हुई और 150 लोग घायल हुए।

2016 पश्चिमी अफ्रीकी देश बुर्किना फासो में ऑगाडोगू के होटल में आतंकवादी हमले में 28 से अधिक लोगों की मौत हुई तथा 56 से अधिक लोग घायल हुए।

2020 आईसीसी ने भारतीय क्रिकेट टीम के (सीमित ओवरों के फॉर्मेट) रोहित शर्मा को वर्ष का सर्वश्रेष्ठ वनडे क्रिकेटर चुना और विराट कोहली को आइसीसी स्प्रिट ऑफ क्रिकेट अवॉर्ड ऑफ द ईयर चुना गया। इसी दिन रूस के प्रधानमंत्री दिमित्री मेदवेदेव ने अपने मंत्रिमंडल के साथ अपने पद से इस्तीफा दे दिया। इसी दिन भारत मौसम विज्ञान विभाग ने अपना 145वां स्थापना दिवस मनाया। यह दिवस पृथ्वी विज्ञान मंत्रालय द्वारा मनाया गया। इसी दिन आईपीएस अधिकारी आनंद प्रकाश माहेश्वरी ने दुनिया की सबसे बड़ी अर्धसैनिक बल केंद्रीय रिजर्व पुलिस बल के नए महानिदेशक के रूप में पदभार संभाला।

2022 कनाडा में एक प्रमुख प्रांतीय राजनीतिक दल का नेतृत्व करने वाली पहली महिला राजनीतिज्ञ, संघीय न्यू डेमोक्रेटिक पार्टी की पूर्व नेता एलेक्सा मैकडोनो का निधन हुआ।

2023 भारत सहित विदेशों में भी अच्छी पहचान रखने वाली प्रख्यात भारतीय शास्त्रीय नृत्यांगना और सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता मल्लिका साराभाई ने रविवार को देश में आदर्शों के पूर्ण विनाश पर निराशा व्यक्त करते हुए आरोप लगाया कि हिंदू धर्म के नाम पर हिंदुत्व की विचारधारा को लोगों पर थोपा जा रहा है। पद्म भूषण से सम्मानित 68 वर्षीय साराभाई ने कोलकाता में एपीजे कोलकाता साहित्य महोत्सव के समापन पर अपने जीवन, करियर और नृत्य जगत में सफर पर आधारित सत्र में कहा कि हिंदू धर्म में सवाल पूछने की कोई मनाही नहीं है। उन्होंने कहा कि आज मैं अपने आसपास जो कुछ भी देख रही हूं, वह मुझे पूरी तरह से तोड़ रहा है। मैंने कभी सोचा भी नहीं था कि भारत में हमारे आदर्शों का पूर्ण विनाश होगा और विज्ञापन और ब्रांड-निर्माण की चमक में इतने सारे लोग अंधे हो जाएंगे।

Became a leading figure in the revolutionary socialist movements of Poland and Germany in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

1921 Famous actor Sajjan, who worked in many popular films like Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, Johnny Mera Naam, Beas Saal Baad, April Fool, Rail Ka Dibba and Jhumru, was born in Jaipur.

Khashwa Dadasaheb Jadhav, the famous Indian wrestler who won the bronze medal in the 1926 Helsinki Summer Olympics in 1952, was born in Satara Maharashtra.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born in 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. He was an American pastor, prominent agitator, and prominent leader of the African-American civil rights struggle. He is also called Gandhi of America. His efforts led to progress in the field of civil rights in America, hence today he is also seen as a symbol of human rights and on January 15, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated all over America. There is a public holiday on this day.
