1170 कैंटरबरी के आर्कबिशप थॉमस बेकेट की किंग हेनरी द्वितीय के समर्थकों ने कैंटरबरी कैथेड्रल में हत्या कर दी गई। काफी बाद में एंग्लिकन कम्युनियन और कैथोलिक चर्च की ओर से उन्हें शहीद का दर्जा मिला।

1503 गरिग्लिआनो की लड़ाई में गोंजालो फर्नांडीज डी कोर्डोबा के नेतृत्व में स्पेनिश सेना और लुडोविको द्वितीय, मार्क्वेस ऑफ सालुजो के नेतृत्व में फ्रांसीसी सेना के बीच लड़ी गई।

1530 भारत के प्रथम मुगल शासक जहीरुद्दीन मोहम्मद बाबर का बेटा नसीरुद्दीन मोहम्मद हुमायूं बाबर की मृत्यु के पश्चात उत्तराधिकार के तहत भारत का दूसरा मुगल बादशाह बना।

1607 जॉन स्मिथ के अनुसार पॉवहटन नेता वाहुनसेनकाव की बेटी पोकाहोंटस ने जनजातीय नेताओं द्वारा उसे मार डालने के प्रयास के दौरान जीवित रहने देने की याचना की, जिसे स्वीकार कर लिया गया।

1779 लेफ्टिनेंट कर्नल आर्चीबाल्ड कैंपबेल के नेतृत्व में ब्रिटिश सैनिकों ने सवाना, जॉर्जिया पर कब्जा कर लिया।

1812 कैप्टन विलियम बैनब्रिज के आदेश के तहत तीन घंटे की लड़ाई के बाद ब्राजील के तट पर एचएमएस जावा पर कब्जा किया।

1835 अमेरिकी नेताओं के अल्पसंख्यक चेरोकी गुट के साथ न्यू इकोटा की संधि पर हस्ताक्षर हुए, जो कि आंसू निकालने के लिए कानूनी आधार बन गया, जिसे ट्रेल ऑफ टीयर्स के रूप में जाना जाता है।

1844 कलकत्ता, बंगाल प्रेसीडेंसी, ब्रिटिश भारत में वोमेश चंद्र बनर्जी (बंगाली नाम उमेश चंद्र बनर्जी) का जन्म हुआ जो प्रसिद्ध भारतीय बैरिस्टर, राजनीतिज्ञ, भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के सह-संस्थापक और पहले अध्यक्ष बने।

1845 टेक्सास अमेरिका का 28वां राज्य बना।

1851 पहली अमेरिकी यंग मैंस क्रिस्चियन एसोसिएशन वायएमसीए बोस्टन, मैसाचुसेट्स में खुली। कहना चाहिए कि इसाई युवाओं का संगठन हुआ यह।

1873 गुरुदेव रविंद्र नाथ ठाकुर परिवार में इंदिरा देवी चौधरानी का जन्म हुआ। उस जमाने में वे प्रमुख विद्वान, लेखिका, संगीतज्ञ हुईं। 

1881 प्रसिद्ध साहित्यकार गिरिधर शर्मा चतुर्वेदी का जन्म हुआ।

1890 संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिकी सेना ने एक नरसंहार में ग्रेटसाइक्स राष्ट्र के 150 से अधिक सदस्यों को मार डाला।

1891 शारीरिक शिक्षा शिक्षक जेम्स नाइस्मिथ ने मैसाचुसेट्स के इनप्रिंगफील्ड में तेरह नियमों और प्रत्येक खिलाड़ी पर नौ खिलाड़ियों के साथ एक गेम पेश किया, जिसे उन्होंने बास्केट बॉल कहा।

1900 हिंदी फिल्मों के शुरुआती अभिनेताओं में से एक दीनानाथ मंगेशकर का जन्म हुआ।

1904 कुवेंपु के नाम से प्रख्यात कन्नड़ कवि व लेखक, कन्नड़ साहित्य के लिए प्रथम ज्ञानपीठ पुरस्कार पाने वाले कुप्पाली वेंकटप्पा पुटप्पा का कोप्पा ग्रामीण में जन्म हुआ।

1911 सुन यात सेन को नए चीन गणतंत्र का राष्ट्रपति घोषित किया गया। इन्हें अनंतिम राष्ट्रपति के रूप में नानजिंग में चुना गया था। आम जनता और साम्यवादी कार्यकर्ता उन्हें चीन गणतंत्र का राष्ट्रपिता मानते हैं। इसी दिन 1911 में मंगोलिया किंग वंश के शासन से आजाद हुआ।

1917 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय फिल्म निर्माता, निर्देशक तथा दूरदर्शन के लोकप्रिय धारावाहिक रामायण के निर्माता रामानंद सागर का जन्म लाहौर में हुआ।

1922 नीदरलैंड ने संविधान अंगीकार किया। इसी दिन 1922 में विख्यात अमेरिकी लेखक विलियम गैडेस का जन्म हुआ।

1923 न्यूयॉर्क शहर में मेरिल का जन्म हुआ। मेरिल का वास्तविक नाम नेडेनिया मार्जोरी हटन था। मेरिल विख्यात खूबसूरत, बोल्ड अमेरिकी फिल्म, टेलीविजन एवं स्टेज अभिनेत्री, गेम शो पैनलिस्ट, सोशलाइट और व्यवसायी महिला हुईं। 1959 में उन्हें ‘हॉलीवुड की नई ग्रेस केली’ घोषित किया गया।

1927 राष्ट्रीय विचारधारा के समर्थक, यूनानी पद्धति के प्रसिद्ध चिकित्सक हकीम अजमल खां का निधन हुआ।

1930 मुस्लिम लीग के 25वें अधिवेशन में सारे जहां से अच्छा हिंदोस्तां हमारा लिखने वाले मशहूर शायर मोहम्मद इकबाल ने एक चर्चिच भाषण दिया वह पाकिस्तान में आइडिया ऑफ पाकिस्तान के नाम से पढ़ाया जाता है।

1937 आयरलैंड का संविधान, जिसे आज आयरलैंड गणराज्य के रूप में जाना जाता है, थेस्टेट का संस्थापक कानूनी दस्तावेज लागू हुआ।

1939 कन्नड़ के प्रसिद्ध संगीतज्ञ और आम आदमी के गीत गाने वाले चन्नारायापटना अश्वथ का जन्म हुआ।

1942 प्रख्यात हिंदी फिल्म अभिनेता और बाॅलीवुड के प्रथम सुपर स्टार राजेश खन्ना का जन्म अमृतसर में हुआ। राजेश का वास्तविक नाम जतिन खन्ना था, लेकिन उन्होंने अपने चाचा की सलाह पर बॉलीवुड में एंट्री से पहले अपना नाम बदलकर राजेश कर लिया था। राजेश का पालन-पोषण उनके वास्तविक माता-पिता ने नहीं, बल्कि उन्हें गोद लेने वाले उनके अभिभावकों ने किया था। ऐसा कहा जाता है कि उनके अभिभावकों ने उनकी मां की निसंतान बहन को उन्हें देने का वादा किया था और बाद में इसे पूरा भी किया। राजेश खन्ना ने यद्यपि कभी इस बारे में कुछ भी साफ नहीं बताया और पत्रकारों को अलग-अलग कहानियां सुनाई थीं। 1969 से 1971 तक उन्होंने 15 हिट फिल्में देने का कीर्तिमान बनाया। उनकी इस शानदार कामयाबी का दौर 1969 में आई फिल्म आराधना से शुरू हुआ था, जो 1971 में फिल्म हाथी मेरे साथी तक जारी रहा। राजेश खन्ना की कामयाबी और जबर्दस्त फैन फॉलोइंग को देखते हुए बीबीसी ने 1974 में उन पर एक डॉक्यूमेंट्री बॉम्बे सुपरस्टार बनाई थी। 70 और 80 के दशक में राजेश खन्ना की फिल्मों का जादू लोगों के सिर चढ़कर बोलता था। 70 और 80 के दशक में वह फिल्मों के लिए सबसे ज्यादा फीस लेने वाले अभिनेता थे। राजेश खन्ना ने बॉलीवुड में प्रवेश 1965 में फिल्मफेयर टैलेंट हंट जीतकर किया था। राजेश खन्ना ने 1966 में आई फिल्म आखिरी खत से अपना बॉलीवुड डेब्यू किया था, जो 1967 में भारत की ऑस्कर में पहली आधिकारिक एंट्री फिल्म बनी थी। अपने तीन दशक से ज्यादा लंबे करियर में राजेश खन्ना ने करीब 20 ही ऐसी फिल्मों में काम किया, जो दो हीरो प्रोजेक्ट वाली थीं। बाकी अपनी 100 से ज्यादा फिल्मों में उन्होंने सोलो लीड भूमिका निभाई थी। राजेश खन्ना ने ही सलीम खान और जावेद अख्तर की लेखक जोड़ी को फिल्म हाथी मेरे साथी के जरिए स्क्रीनराइटर के रूप में पहला ब्रेक दिया था। इसके बाद सलीम-जावेद की जोड़ी ने गति पकड़ ली। 18 जुलाई 2012 को 69 साल की उम्र में लंबी बीमारी के बाद राजेश खन्ना का मुंबई में निधन हो गया।

1945 नेपाल के राजा और दक्षिण एशिया के प्रमुख नेताओं में से एक वीरेन्द्र वीर विक्रम शाह देव का जन्म हुआ। इनकी सपरिवार 1 जून 2001 की रात्रि इन्हीं के भाई ज्ञानेंद्र के पुत्र पारस द्वारा कर दी गई। हालांकि बताया यह गया कि परिवार की हत्या राजा वीरेंद्र के ही पुत्र दीपेंद्र ने की। बाद में घायल दीपेंद्र की अस्पताल में मौत हो गई।

1948 हिंदी के प्रसिद्ध आलोचक, साहित्यकार, स्तंभकार और वरिष्ठ मीडिया समीक्षक सुधीश पचैरी का जन्म हुआ।

1949 यूरोपीय देश हंगरी में उद्योगों का राष्ट्रीयकरण किया गया। इसी दिन 1949 में मद्रास में जन्म लेने वाले सईद किरमानी भारत के मशहूर क्रिकेटर, विकेट कीपर हुए।

1952 बंबई में जसवंत और हरदर्शन कौर की बेटी ने जन्म लिया, यह हिंदी फिल्मों की मशहूर अभिनेत्री हुईं योगिता बाली। इन्होंने अभिनेता मिथुन चक्रवर्ती से विवाह किया।

1959 मंजर भोपाली नाम से मशहूर उर्दू शायर सईद अली रज़ा का जन्म अमरावती में हुआ। लाॅकडाउन के दौरान मध्य प्रदेश बिजली विभाग ने इन्हें 36 लाख रुपये से अधिक का बिजली का घरेलू बिल भेजा दिया था। इसी दिन लिस्बन, पुर्तगाल में मेट्रो ट्रेन का संचालन शुरू हुआ।

1963 जानी मानी माॅडल उत्तरा माथरे खेर का जन्म हुआ। इनकी बेटी सय्यमी खेर जानी-मानी अभिनेत्री और माॅडल हैं।

1964 मलयालम फिल्म अभिनेत्री और फिल्म डबिंग कलाकार जीनथ का जन्म नीलंबूर, मल्लपुरम, केरल में हुआ।

1965 दक्षिण भारतीय सिनेमा की जानी मानी अभिनेत्री और फिल्म निर्माता, निर्देशक लक्ष्मी रामाकृष्णन का जन्म पलक्कड़, केरल में हुआ। इसी दिन हरियाणा के एक बहुविवादित राजनेता और कारोबारी गोपाल कुमार गोयल यानी गोपाल कांडा का जन्म हिसार में हुआ। यह अपनी विमानन कंपनी एमडीएलआर एयरलाइंस की कर्मचारी गीतिका की आत्महत्या मामले में बहुत चर्चा में रहे। हरियाणा लोकहित पार्टी इनका राजनीतिक दल है।

1967 प्रख्यात शिक्षाविद, संगीतज्ञ एवं हिन्दुस्तानी शास्त्रीय गायक पंडित ओंकारनाथ ठाकुर का निधन।

1972 कलकत्ता मे मेट्रो रेल का काम शुरू हुआ। 1972 में इसी दिन अमेरिका में फ्लोरिडा राज्य के एवरग्लैड्स के समीप इस्टर्न त्रिस्टार जम्बो जेट विमान के दुर्घटनाग्रस्त होने से 101 लोगों की मौत हुई।

1973 भारत के पहले सुपर स्टार अभिनेता राजेश खन्ना के जन्म के दिन ही उनकी पुत्री ट्विंकल खन्ना का जन्म बंबई के जसलोक अस्पताल में हुआ। मां डिंपल कपाड़िया। ट्विंकल ने अभिनय, अखबारों में कालम लिखने, फिल्म निर्माण और इंटीरियर डेकोरेशन आदि कई क्षेत्रों में पहचान बनाई। वे अभिनेता अक्षय कुमार की पत्नी हैं।

1975 ब्रिटेन में महिलाओं और पुरुषों के समान अधिकारों से जुड़ा कानून लागू हुआ।

1977 विश्व का सबसे बड़ा ओपन एयर थियेटर ड्राइव बंबई में खुला।

1978 स्पेन में संविधान प्रभाव में आया।

1983 भारतीय क्रिकेटर सुनील गावस्कर ने टेस्ट क्रिकेट में अधिकतम 236 रन वेस्टइंडीज के खिलाफ बनाये।

1984 लोकसभा चुनाव परिणाम आए। 31 अक्टूबर 1984 को सुबह सवा नौ बजे खालिस्तानी चरमपंथियों से प्रेरित सिख अंगरक्षकों द्वारा प्रधानमंत्री श्रीमती इंदिरा गांधी की हत्या के बाद दिसंबर में हुए चुनाव में कांग्रेस ने स्वतंत्र भारत के इतिहास में सबसे भारी बहुमत हासिल किया था। इस चुनाव में 28 सीटें जीतकर तेलुगु देशम पार्टी देश में सबसे बड़ी विपक्षी पार्टी के तौर पर उभरी।

1985 श्रीलंका ने 43,000 भारतीयों को नागरिकता प्रदान की।

1988 उत्तर प्रदेश में बस्ती जिले के उत्तरी हिस्से को बस्ती जिले से काटकर अलग सिद्धार्थनगर जिले का निर्माण किया गया। इसी दिन ऑस्ट्रेलिया सरकार ने विक्टोरियाई पोस्ट ऑफिस संग्रहालय बंद किया।

1989 वात्सलाव हाबेल पहली बार चेकोस्लोवाकिया के गैर-साम्यवादी राष्ट्रपति चुने गये। इसी दिन 1989 में दंगों और तोड़ - फोड़ के कारण हांगकांग प्रशासन ने जबरन वियतनामी शरणार्थियों को प्रत्यावर्तित का फैसला किया। 1989 में इसी दिन टोक्यो स्टॉक एक्सचेंज निक्केई 225 अपने सर्वकालिक इंट्रा-डे उच्चतम 38,957.44 स्तर पर पहुंच गया और 38,915.87 पर बंद हुआ।

1992 ब्राजील के राष्ट्रपति फर्नांडो कोलोर डी मेलो ने महाभियोग की कार्यवाही को जारी रखने से रोकने के लिए इस्तीफा दे दिया, लेकिन ब्राजील के सीनेट ने वैसे भी उन्हें दोषी पाया।

1996 ग्वाटेमाला सरकार और ग्वाटेमेले राष्ट्रीय क्रांतिकारी संघ के नेताओं ने 36 साल के गृह युद्ध समाप्त होने के समझौते पर हस्ताक्षर किए। 1996 में इसी दिन नाटो के बढ़ते प्रभाव को रोकने के लिए एकत्र होकर कार्य करने के मुद्दे पर रूस एवं चीन में सहमति बनी।

1997 एच5 एन1 फ्लू वायरस के प्रसार को रोकने के लिए, हांगकांग सरकार ने 1.3 मिलियन मुर्गियों को नष्ट कर दिया।

1998 विश्व के पहले परमाणु बम बनाने वाले अमेरिकी वैज्ञानिक रेगर सक्रेबर का निधन।

2002 पाकिस्तान के पर्यटकों को भारत के तीन शहरों में घूमने की अनुमति मिली।

2004 सुनामी लहरों के कारण इंडोनेशिया में मरने वालों की संख्या 60,000 पहुँची।

2006 चीन ने वर्ष राष्ट्रीय रक्षा पर श्वेत पत्र जारी किया।

2008 भारत के प्रमुखतम चित्रकारों में से एक मंजीत बाबा का निधन हुआ।

2011 पोलैंड ने घोषणा की कि वह 1 जनवरी, 2012 से अवैध प्रवासियों को माफी प्रदान करेगा।

2012 पाकिस्तान में पेशावर के समीप आतंकवादियों के हमले में 21 सुरक्षाकर्मी मारे गये।

2013 रूस के रक्षा मंत्रालय ने सोयुज-2-1 वी रॉकेट सफलतापूर्वक लॉन्च किया।

2014 स्कॉटिश स्वास्थ्य अधिकारियों को सिएरा लियोन से लौटे अपने एक स्वास्थ्य देखभाल कार्यकर्ता की जांच के बाद इबोला वायरस का पता चला। 

2015 विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठन ने पश्चिमी अफ्रीकी देश गिनी को इबोला मुक्त घोषित किया। गिन्नी के एक गांव के 18 साल के युवक में सबसे पहले इबोला संक्रमण मिला था। 2015 में इसी दिन ओम प्रकाश मल्होत्रा, भारतीय जनरल और राजनीतिज्ञ, पंजाब के 25वें राज्यपाल का निधन हुआ।

2015 प्रसिद्ध चेक फुटबॉलर और कोच पावेल श्रीनिक का निधन हुआ।

2016 प्रसिद्ध अमेरिकी फुटबॉल डिफेंसिव बैक कीओन कारपेंटर एवं लावेल एडवर्ड्स, अमेरिकी फुटबॉल मुख्य कोच का निधन हुआ।

2017 लोकप्रिय खूबसूरत, बोल्ड आयरिश अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल पैगी कमिंस एवं जॉन सी. पोर्टमैन जूनियर, अमेरिकी नवभविष्यवादी वास्तुकार और रियल एस्टेट डेवलपर का निधन हुआ।

2018 प्रसिद्ध अमेरिकी उपन्यासकार, इतिहासकार और पटकथा लेखक ब्रायन गारफील्ड एवं रोसेन्डा मोंटेरोस, खूबसूरत, बोल्ड मैक्सिकन अभिनेत्री का निधन हुआ।

2019 प्रसिद्ध स्कॉटिश लेखक और कलाकार अलास्डेयर ग्रे नील इनेस, अंग्रेजी लेखक, हास्य अभिनेता और संगीतकार का निधन हुआ।

2020 विख्यात इतालवी-फ्रेंच फैशन डिजाइनर पियरे कार्डिन एवं जो लुई क्लार्क, प्रसिद्ध अमेरिकी शिक्षक का निधन हुआ। 2020 में इसी दिन दक्षिणी यमनी शहर अदन में हवाई अड्डे पर एक बड़े विस्फोट में कम से कम 22 लोग मारे गए और 50 घायल हो गए। क्रोएशिया के सिसाक-मोस्लाविना काउंटी में पेट्रिंजा शहर के पास 6.4 तीव्रता का भूकंप आया, जिसमें सात लोगों की मौत हो गई।

2021 विख्यात दक्षिण अफ्रीकी संगीतकार पीटर क्लैत्जो का निधन हुआ।

2022 विश्व विख्यात ब्राजीलियाई फुटबॉलर पेले का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन एडगर सविसार, एस्टोनियाई राजनीतिज्ञ, एस्टोनियाई आंतरिक मंत्री एवं विविएन वेस्टवुड, अंग्रेजी फैशन डिजाइनर का निधन हुआ।

1942 Rajesh Khanna, famous Hindi film actor and Bollywood's first superstar, was born in Amritsar. Rajesh's real name was Jatin Khanna, but on the advice of his uncle, he changed his name to Rajesh before entering Bollywood. Rajesh was not brought up by his biological parents but by adoptive guardians. It is said that his parents had promised and later fulfilled the promise of giving him to his mother's childless sister. However, Rajesh Khanna never told anything clearly about this and told different stories to the journalists. From 1969 to 1971, he made a record of giving 15 hit films. His period of great success started with the 1969 film Aradhana, which continued till the 1971 film Haathi Mere Saathi. Seeing the success and huge fan following of Rajesh Khanna, BBC made a documentary on him in 1974, Bombay Superstar. In the 70's and 80's, the magic of Rajesh Khanna's films impressed people. In the 70's and 80's he was the highest paid actor for films. Rajesh Khanna entered Bollywood in 1965 by winning the Filmfare Talent Hunt. Rajesh Khanna made his Bollywood debut with the 1966 film Aakhri Khat, which became India's first official entry for the Oscars in 1967. In his career spanning over three decades, Rajesh Khanna worked in only about 20 films which were two-hero projects. In the rest of his more than 100 films, he played solo lead roles. It was Rajesh Khanna who gave the first break as a screenwriter to the writer duo of Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar through the film Haathi Mere Saathi. After this the Salim-Javed duo gained momentum. Rajesh Khanna died in Mumbai on 18 July 2012 after prolonged illness at the age of 69.

1945 Virendra Veer Vikram Shah Dev, King of Nepal and one of the prominent leaders of South Asia, was born. His family was murdered on the night of 1 June 2001 by his brother Gyanendra's son Paras. However, it was told that the family was murdered by King Virendra's own son Deependra. Later the injured Deependra died in the hospital.

He was in the news for the suicide of Geetika, an employee of his airline MDLR Airlines. Haryana Lokhit Party is his political party.
