8 मई को दुनिया भर में दो दिवस - विश्व रेडक्रॉस दिवस एवं विश्व थैलेसिमिया दिवस मनाए जाते हैं।

1360 अंग्रेजों और फ्रांसीसियों ने ब्रिटिग्नी समझौते पर हस्ताक्षर किये।

1541 अमेरिका की प्रमुख और विश्व प्रसिद्ध मिसीसिपी नदी की हरनांदो डे सोटो ने खोज की।

1713 मस्क्वा (रूस की राजधानी मास्को) की जगह सेंट पीटर्सबर्ग को रूस की राजधानी बनाया गया।

1777 बंगाल के नवाब मीर कासिम का निधन हुआ।

1794 ऑक्सीजन की खोज करने वाले वैज्ञानिक एंटोनियो लेवाइजर का निधन हुआ था। सबसे पहले ऑक्सीजन गैस की खोज 1772 में स्वीडन के कार्ल विल्हेम शीले नामक वैज्ञानिक ने की थी। कार्ल शीले ने पोटैशियम नाइट्रेट को गर्म करके ऑक्सीजन गैस प्राप्त की थी। उन्होंने अपनी खोज को कहीं प्रकाशित नहीं किया। इसके 2 साल बाद साल 1774 में रसायन विज्ञानी जोसेफ प्रिस्टले ने मरक्यूरिक आॅक्साइड का थर्मल डीकंपोजिशन किया और ऑक्सीजन प्राप्त की। 1775-80 के दौरान एक और वैज्ञानिक एंटोनियो लेवाइजर ने ऑक्सीजन की खोज में महत्वपूर्ण कार्य किए। उन्होंने वस्तुओं के जलने और सांस लेने में ऑक्सीजन की भूमिका का पता लगाया। ऑक्सीजन को एक रासायनिक तत्व के रूप में खोजने का श्रेय भी लेवाइजर को ही जाता है।

1794 फ्रांस के वैज्ञानिक और आधुनिक रसायन विज्ञान के जनक अन्तुआन लावुआज्ये को भ्रष्टाचार के आरोप में फांसी की सजा दे दी गई।

1828 मानव सेवा कार्यों के लिए पहला नोबेल शांति पुरस्कार प्राप्त व्यक्ति जीन हेनरी डयूनेन्ट का जन्म हुआ।

1842 पोलेंड के वार्सा से पेरिस जा रही ट्रेन में आग लगने से 50 व्यक्तियों की मौत हुई।

1847 साहित्य अकादमी पुरस्कार पाने वाले प्रसिद्ध गुजराती कथाकार ध्रुव भट्ट का जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन रॉबर्ट डब्ल्यू. थॉम्पसन ने रबर के टायर का पेटेंट करवाया।

1871 ब्रिटेन और अमेरिका के बीच समझौते के बाद अलबामा विवाद समाप्त हुआ।

1863 19वीं सदी में जब दुनिया भर में युद्ध चल रहे थे, सैनिक लोगों को अंधाधुंध मारते, काटते और विध्वंस करते चले जाते थे तब घायलों की मदद के लिए स्विटजरलैंड के जेनेवा में रेडक्रॉस स्वंयसेवी संगठन की स्थाना हुई। 97 मिलियन स्वयं सेवकों और कार्मिकों के साथ यह संस्था दुनिया भर में स्वास्थ्य सेवाएं मुहैया कराती है।

1886 अमेरिकी फार्मासिस्ट जान एस पैंबरटन ने कोका कोला का विकास किया तथा तब इसे एक टॉनिक बताया।

1895 उड़ीसा के प्रसिद्ध क्रांतिकारी तथा गाँधीवादी कार्यकर्ता गोपबन्धु चौधरी का जन्म हुआ।

1898 इटालियन फुटबाल लीग का पहला मैच खेला गया।

1899 स्वतंत्रता सेनानी सुदेव चापेकर का निधन हुआ।

1901 आस्ट्रेलिया के राजनीतिक दल लेबर पार्टी की स्थापना की गई।

1903 पाकिस्तान के सुप्रीम कोर्ट के मुख्य न्यायाधीश, कानूनविद अल्विन राबर्ट काॅर्नेलियस का जन्म आगरा में हुआ। इसी दिन दुनिया के पहले जेप्लिन वायुपोत लेबोदी ने 37 किलोमीटर की अपनी पहली उड़ान थी।

1915 स्वतंत्रता सेनानी अमीर चन्द का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन एक और जाने माने क्रांतिकारी भाई बालमुकुंद का निधन हुआ।

1916 चिन्मयानंद मिशन के संस्थापक, हिंदु वेदांत दर्शन के आध्यात्मिक गुरु चिन्मयानंद सरस्वती का जन्म एर्नाकुलम केरल में हुआ।

1921 स्वीडन ने फांसी की सजा समाप्त की।

1926 प्रसिद्ध इतिहासकार तपन राय चौधरी का जन्म हुआ।

1929 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय ठुमरी गायिका गिरिजा देवी का जन्म हुआ।

1933 महात्मा गांधी ने ब्रिटिश शासन के खिलाफ 21 दिन का उपवास शुरु किया।

1938 विख्यात पाकिस्तानी क्रिकेट खिलाड़ी जावेद बर्की का जन्म मेरठ में हुआ। 

1945 युद्ध में पराजय मिलने पर मित्र राष्ट्रों की सेनाओं के समक्ष जर्मनी ने आत्मसमर्पण किया। 8 मई का दिन यूरोप में विक्ट्री डे या विजय दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाता है। इस दिन 1945 में जर्मनी की हार के साथ यूरोप में दूसरे विश्व युद्ध का अंत हुआ। 6 साल चले विश्व युद्ध के बाद ब्रिटेन और गठबंधन सेनाओं के सामने जर्मनी ने आत्मसमर्पण कर दिया था। तब से हर साल 08 मई को यूरोप में विक्ट्री ऑफ यूरोप डे के रूप में मनाया जाता है। 1939 में जर्मनी के तानाशाह हिटलर के पोलैंड पर हमले से शुरू हुआ दूसरा विश्व युद्ध करीब 6 साल चला था। युद्ध में दो धड़े थे-एक ओर ब्रिटेन, अमेरिका, सोवियत संघ और फ्रांस जैसे देश थे, जो मित्र राष्ट्र कहलाए, दूसरी ओर जर्मनी, इटली और जापान जैसे देश थे, जो धुरी राष्ट्र कहलाए। युद्ध में जर्मनी की अगुआई वाले धुरी राष्ट्रों की हार हुई थी। एक अनुमान के अनुसार, दूसरा विश्व युद्ध मानव इतिहास का सबसे भयंकर युद्ध था, जिसमें करीब 10 करोड़ सैनिकों ने हिस्सा लिया था और करीब 8 करोड़ लोगों की मौत हुई थी। जर्मन तानाशाह हिटलर ने युद्ध में जर्मनी को हारता और खुद को घिरते देखकर 30 अप्रैल 1945 को आत्महत्या कर ली थी। हिटलर के मरने के एक सप्ताह बाद जर्मनी ने बिना किसी शर्त के आत्मसमर्पण के कागजों पर दस्तखत कर दिए थे। यूरोप में ‘विक्ट्री डे या विजय दिवस पर कई रंगारंग कार्यक्रम आयोजित होते हैं। इन कार्यक्रमों में विश्व युद्ध के उन दिग्गजों को सार्वजनिक श्रद्धांजलि दी जाती है जिन्होंने यूरोप को तानाशाही नाजीवाद या फासीवाद से मुक्त कराया था।

1947 जाने माने गुजराती उपन्यासकार ध्रुव भट्ट का जन्म भावनगर में हुआ।

1953 पुर्तगाली मूल के संगीतज्ञ, गायक रोमियो फरनांडीज का जन्म पंजिम, गोवा में हुआ। इसी दिन भारत के प्रसिद्ध सर्जन, 1 लाख से अधिक हृदय आॅपरेशन करने वाले, नारायणा हैल्थ चिकित्सा संस्थान श्रंख्ला के मुखिया देवी प्रसाद शेट्टी का जन्म हुआ। 

1954 केंद्र सरकार ने चंद्रनगर को पश्चिम बंगाल राज्य में शामिल किया।

1956 महाराष्ट्र के जाने माने राजनेता, शिवसेना के लोकसभा सदस्य शिवाजीराव अधलराव पाटिल या अधलराव शिवाजी दत्तात्रेय का जन्म अंबेगांव में हुआ।

1959 प्रधानमंत्री जवाहरलाल नेहरू ने चीन को भारत के खिलाफ धमकी भरी बयानबाजियां बंद करने को कहा।

1960 हरियाणा के प्रमुख भाजपा नेता और खट्टर सरकार में विद्यालयी शिक्षा मंत्री कंवर पाल गुर्जर का जन्म गांव बहादुरपुर जिला यमुनानगर में हुआ।

1989 जाने माने भारतीय बेसबाल खिलाड़ी दिनेश पटेल का जन्म लखनऊ में हुआ।

1990 भाग मिल्खा भाग जैसी तमाम फिल्मों से पहचान हासिल करने वाले जाने माने फिल्म अभिनेता एवं माॅडल सुमित गुलाटी का जन्म दिल्ली में हुआ।

1993 धार्मिक अंधविश्वासों, पाखंडों के खिलाफ तथ्यात्मक, तार्किक लेखन करने वाले भारत के प्रसिद्ध इतिहासकार और लेखक देवीप्रसाद चट्टोपाध्याय का निधन हुआ। देवीप्रसाद चट्टोपाध्याय (जन्म 19 नवम्बर 1918 - निधन 8 मई 1993) भारत के गणमान्य मार्क्सवादी दार्शनिक तथा इतिहासकार थे। चट्टोपाध्याय ने प्राचीन भारतीय दर्शन में भौतिकवादी संस्कृति की गवेषणा में महत्वपूर्ण योगदान दिया। चट्टोपाध्याय ने प्राचीन भारतीय लोकायत दर्शन पर बहुत काम किया।

1995 जानी मानी दक्षिण भारतीय फिल्म अभिनेत्री एवं माॅडल इस्वर्या मेनन का जन्म इरोड में हुआ। 1995 इसी दिन फिल्मी गीत गायिका, फिल्मों में आवाज देने वाली और माॅडल प्रकृति कक्कड़ का जन्म दिल्ली में हुआ।

1997 चीन की सादर्न एयरलाइंस फ्लाइट 3456 क्रेश हो गई जिसमें 35 लोग मारे गए।

1999 बेलग्राद स्थित चीनी दूतावास पर नाटो द्वारा प्रक्षेपास्त्रों से हमला। इसी दिन 1999 दक्षिणी बांग्लादेश में मेघना नदी में एक खचाखच भरी नौका पलट जाने से 300 लोगों की मौत।

2000 भारतीय मूल के 69 वर्षीय अमीर कारोबारी लॉर्ड स्वराजपाल को ब्रिटेन के चौथे सबसे बड़े विश्वविद्यालय ब्रिटिश यूनीवर्सिटी का कुलपति नियुक्त किया गया।

2001 अंतर्राष्ट्रीय मादक द्रव्य नियंत्रण बोर्ड से अमेरिका बाहर हुआ।

2004 श्रीलंका के मुरलीधरन ने 521 विकेट लेकर सर्वाधिक टेस्ट विकेट लेने का रिकार्ड बनाया।

2006 अमेरिका ने पाकिस्तान को आधुनिकतम पारम्परिक शस्त्र प्रणाली देने पर सहमत जताई।

2009 पाकिस्तानी सेना ने स्वात घाटी में तालिबान के खिलाफ अभियान तेज किया। तालिबान से त्रस्त करीब दो लाख लोगों ने घाटी से पलायन किया।

2010 छत्तीसगढ़ में नक्सलियों ने दंतेबाड़ा में टाड़मेटला हमले के एक माह बाद बीजापुर- भोपालपट्टनम राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग-16 पर सीआरपीएफ के बख्तरबंद वाहन को बारूदी सुरंग विस्फोट कर उड़ा दिया। इसमें आठ जवान मर गए। निकट से गुजर रहे दो नागरिक भी घायल हो गए।

2013 मशहूर भारतीय ध्रुपद गायक जिया फरीदुद्दीन डागर का निधन हुआ।

2018 अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति डोनाल्ड ट्रंप ने ईरान परमाणु समझौते से बाहर निकलने की घोषणा की।

On 8 May, two days are celebrated across the world - World Red Cross Day and World Thalassemia Day.

1360 The British and French sign the Treaty of Brittany.

1541 Hernando de Soto discovered America's major and world famous Mississippi River.

1713 Moscow was replaced by St. Petersburg as the capital of Russia.

1777 Mir Qasim, the Nawab of Bengal, died.

1794 Antonio Levizer, the scientist who discovered oxygen, died. Oxygen gas was first discovered in 1772 by a scientist named Carl Wilhelm Scheele of Sweden. Carl Scheele obtained oxygen gas by heating potassium nitrate. He did not publish his discovery anywhere. Two years later, in 1774, chemist Joseph Priestley thermally decomposed mercuric oxide and obtained oxygen. During 1775–80, another scientist, Antonio Levizer, did important work in the discovery of oxygen. He discovered the role of oxygen in the burning of objects and in respiration. The credit for discovering oxygen as a chemical element also goes to Levizer.

1794 French scientist and father of modern chemistry, Antoine Lavoisier, was hanged on charges of corruption.

1828 Jean-Henri Dunant, the first person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for humanitarian work, was born.

1842 A train going from Warsaw to Paris in Poland caught fire, killing 50 people.

1847 Sahitya Akademi Awardee, famous Gujarati writer Dhruv Bhatt was born. On the same day Robert W. Thompson patented the rubber tyre.

The 1871 Agreement between Britain and the United States ended the Alabama dispute.

1863 In the 19th century, when wars were going on around the world, soldiers went on killing, maiming and destroying people indiscriminately, then the Red Cross volunteer organization was established in Geneva, Switzerland to help the wounded. With 97 million volunteers and personnel, the organization provides health services around the world.

1886 American pharmacist John S. Pemberton developed Coca-Cola and then described it as a tonic.

1988 Parathu Ravindran Sreejesh, famous Indian hockey player, was born in Keezhakambalam, Kerala.

1989 Dinesh Patel, famous Indian baseball player, was born in Lucknow.

Famous film actor and model Sumit Gulati, who gained recognition from many films like 1990 Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, was born in Delhi.

1993 India's famous historian and writer Deviprasad Chattopadhyay, who wrote factual, logical writings against religious superstitions and hypocrisies, passed away. Deviprasad Chattopadhyay (born 19 November 1918 – died 8 May 1993) was a distinguished Marxist philosopher and historian of India. Chattopadhyay made important contributions to the exploration of materialistic culture in ancient Indian philosophy. Chattopadhyaya did a lot of work on the ancient Indian Lokayata philosophy.

1995 Iswarya Menon, noted South Indian film actress and model, was born in Erode. 1995 Film singer, voice actor and model Prakriti Kakkar was born in Delhi.

1997 China's Southern Airlines Flight 3456 crashes, killing 35.

1999 NATO missile attack on the Chinese embassy in Belgrade. On this day in 1999, 300 people died when a packed boat overturned in the Meghna River in southern Bangladesh.

2000 Lord Swarajpal, a 69-year-old wealthy Indian-origin businessman, was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the British University, Britain's fourth largest university.
